Happy Birthday, GamingOnLinux – 16 years today

Happy Birthday, GamingOnLinux – 16 years today

Time really flies huh? GamingOnLinux has now been around officially for 16 years.

Over the last year or two we’ve seen a good few other sites shut down, some had big layoffs, others got sold and turned into gambling sites, and various got sold off to the owners of IGN but we’re still here to keep reporting on everything related somehow to Linux and the wider gaming industry. A big thank you as always to everyone reading, commenting and sharing our articles. An extra big thank you to all our supporters for keeping us going!

Right now, things are pretty great. But, all that could change. With the continuing rise of AI being shoved into our eyeballs at every opportunity, the web is going to look quite different a year from now. With Google, Bing and others determined to get you to use AI that barely credits the writers that actually power all their responses (like me, hi).

What this does is remind everyone that the big search engines are not your friends. They want your data and for you to never click away from them. The longer they keep you, the more data they can grab and the more adverts they can show you.

Annoyingly, Microsoft also back in May decided to just remove us from Bing News and massively deranked us, following 1 single hour downtime due to a data centre problem and show no signs of putting us back in – which was a bit of a blow (so we barely appear in anything like DuckDuckGo now). I’ve tried explaining this to Microsoft, and they just don’t care.

Following GamingOnLinux directly is now more important than it ever has been before. How you can help: be sure to share your favourite articles to social media, Reddit and wherever else.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, fear not, GamingOnLinux has no plans to go anywhere. Web traffic is still currently somehow the highest it has ever been! And we have no plans to use any AI generation for anything. It’s all hand-crafted spelling errors and terrible grammar here.

Our Steam Tracker page also recently expanded to begin to include the top Linux distributions used on Steam over time. It’s a manual process and will take a while to fill up, but I thought it would be interesting to see for the trends.

Oh, and for those who liked it, our PC Info system is coming back. Stay tuned, it needs some work though to modernise it and fix a lot of issues it had in the background.

You can follow GamingOnLinux across:

I’m always looking for other ways for you to follow along. If you have any good ideas you can reach out any time. I do also wish to revive our article round-up mailing list, but the expense of it due to the amount of subscribers on it is a bit problematic. Still researching the best way to do it.

If you wish to support the continued news on GamingOnLinux and ensure we stick around, the best way is via Patreon.

Pokémon Go Eevee Community Day Classic guide

Pokémon Go Eevee Community Day Classic guide

Pokémon Go is having an Eevee Community Day Classic event on both July 5 and 6 from 2-5 p.m. in your local time.

As expected with a Community Day event, Eevee will spawn in huge numbers with a high chance for it to appear shiny. There are also several other bonuses and perks, which we’ve listed out below.

How do I catch a shiny Eevee in Pokémon Go?

As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback Machine), Shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 24, which means that if you keep playing throughout the three-hour window, you should find quite a few shiny Pokémon.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Niantic

If you’re short on time or Poké Balls, you can pop an Incense, then quickly tap each Eevee to check for shiny ones, running from any that aren’t shiny. Notably, any Eevee you’ve already tapped will face where your player is standing, so that should help identify which ones you may have already checked.

What Community Day move does Eevee’s evolution learn?

If you evolve Eevee into any of its special evolutions from July 5 at 2 p.m. until July 12 at 10 p.m. in your local time, it will learn the following moves, depending on which evolution you pick:

Vaporeon: Scald (charged move)Jolteon: Zap Cannon (charged move)Flareon: Superpower (charged move)Espeon: Shadow Ball (charged move)Umbreon: Psychic (charged move)Leafeon: Bullet Seed (fast move)Glaceon: Water Pulse (charged move)Sylveon: Psyshock (charged move)

Any Eevee caught or hatched during the event will also know the charged move Last Resort.

If you miss out on evolving it during this period, you will likely be able to evolve it during a Community Day weekend event in December to get whichever move, but know that since the evolution requirements are lessened during this event, it’s easier to just do it now. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to get the move.

How do the Eeveelutions do in the Pokémon Go meta?

For PvE content (raids and gyms), only a few of the Eevee evolutions hold meta relevance. Espeon can hold its weight as a psychic-type attacker with Confusion and Psychic, Glaceon is a decent ice-type attacker with Frost Breath and Avalanche, and Sylveon can also help dish out damage as a fairy-type attacker with Charm and Dazzling Gleam.

For PvP, the only two Eeveelutions that break through the top #200 barrier (according to PvPoke) are Umbreon in the Ultra League and Sylveon in the Master League. Umbreon will want Snarl with Foul Play and Last Resort and Sylveon will want Charm with Moonblast and Psyshock.

How do I make the most of Eevee Community Day?

The following bonuses will be active during Eevee Community Day:

1⁄4 hatch distance for eggs placed into Incubators during the eventIncense lasts three hoursLure Modules lasts three hoursEevee special photobombs when taking snapshotsEvolution requirements for Espeon and Umbreon lowered to 1 km walking (from 10 km)Evolution requirement for Sylveon lowered to seven buddy hearts (from 70 hearts)

That said, you should definitely put your eggs in incubators and pop an Incense and try to nab a ton of Eevee.

If you can Mega Evolve Pidgeot, Kangaskhan, Lopunny, or Audino, you’ll score additional Eevee Candy per catch.

There will also be “Community Day Continued” Timed Research until Saturday, July 12 at 10 p.m. that will reward more Eevee, including ones with special themed backgrounds. This research will keep the increased shiny rate for Eevee, even after the three-hour event is over, so make sure you complete them for extra chances to get a shiny.

The Revival of Banjo-Kazooie: Hope Amid Xbox Layoffs

The Revival of Banjo-Kazooie: Hope Amid Xbox Layoffs

The last few days have not been good for the Xbox brand as Microsoft went on another rampage, jettisoning thousands more employees. Xbox was hit hard, resulting in at least one studio closing, several more on the verge of shutting and numerous cancelled games. But out of the darkness comes a glimmer of something hopeful: Banjo-Kazooie.

The Banjo Kazooie IP has been dormant for many, many years at this point. Creator Gregg Mayels has been clear that he isn’t interested in doing anything with it, and Xbox doesn’t seem to have been interested, either.

Speaking on the latest episode of the VGC podcast, Andy Robinson said as much: “The talk for ages was that, you know, there’s always outside interests in Banjo but they’re not interested. I mean, Gregg (Mayels) is someone who doesn’t look back, notoriously, he said this on the record, that he likes to do new stuff. The attitude from the studio leadership, “no no no, we’re gonna do the new thing.””

However, according to Robinson, attitudes have changed somewhat at Xbox: “I heard more recently the pitches are being listened to.”

Robinson goes on to say that Toys For Bob seems especially keen on doing something with Banjo-Kazooie. Toys for Bob split away from Microsoft last year, but has also publically confirmed that it is working on a game in conjunction with Microsoft and Xbox. There have been rumours that Toys for Bob may be working on a Spyro the Dragon game, and at one point it seemed like the company itself was teasing exactly that.

“Funny enough, I heard Moon Studios as well was another one who’s really interested,” continued Robinson. Moon Studio is best know for its two Ori games.

Robinson also said that there’s always talk of a movie or cartoon based on Banjo Kazooie as well.

I would love to see Banjo Kazooie come back, but given what we’ve seen of Microsoft lately it will be announced tomorrow, disappear for a couple of years, reappear looking strong and then get cancelled five years from now, six months before it was apparently due to launch.

With that said, Xbox going multiplatform presents a pretty good time to bring Banjo-Kazooie back as it could do very well on Nintendo’s hardware.

Walmart+ Is 50% Off – Here’s Why It Offers Incredible Value

Walmart+ Is 50% Off – Here’s Why It Offers Incredible Value

Walmart’s biggest sale of the year (so far) kicks off alongside Amazon Prime Day on July 8. While you don’t need a Walmart+ subscription to shop the discounts during Walmart’s sale, members get five-hour early access starting July 7 at 4 PM PT / 7 PM ET. Ahead of the sale, Walmart is offering a 50% discount on a full year of Walmart+, dropping the price to only $49 (was $98).

The free shipping on online orders is similar to Amazon Prime. Orders are typically delivered within two days, though one- and even same-day delivery are regular occurrences.

The free delivery from local stores perk is an even larger benefit, depending on your proximity to a brick-and-mortar store. Many subscribers can get their entire grocery orders delivered. But even if your Walmart doesn’t have a full supermarket, it’s still nice to be able to get free delivery on random products you’d normally have to drive to the store to buy. Local delivery is often fulfilled the same day you place your order, and you can schedule the time slot when making your purchase.

If you’re a Paramount+ Essential subscriber, you’re likely spending more money on that subscription alone than you would by gaining access via Walmart+.

Other perks include 10 cents off fuel, free pharmacy deliveries, 25% off Burger King orders every day, free online pet care via Pawp, free automobile tire repair, 5% back in Walmart Cash on travel via Expedia, and the ability to return unwanted purchases from home. And if you do still find yourself in your local Walmart after getting a subscription, you can use the app to scan your items as you shop, which allows you to skip the normal checkout process.

Walmart Deals 2025 runs from July 8-13, whereas Amazon Prime Day 2025 is July 8-11. Amazon’s sale is geared toward Prime members, so many of the deals are exclusive to subscribers. If you’re new to Prime, you can get your first 30 days–or six months, if you qualify for Prime Young Adults–at no cost.

Prime members can take advantage of a wide assortment of early deals ahead of the official start date. There are two notable subscription deals for Prime members, too: Amazon Kindle Unlimited and Audible Premium Plus. New subscribers can get their first three months of the digital reading and audiobook memberships for free.

Zenless Zone Zero celebrates its first anniversary – again – but we’re not going to say no to a new story chapter

Zenless Zone Zero celebrates its first anniversary – again – but we’re not going to say no to a new story chapter

The last four weeks have been pretty hot for Zenless Zone Zero. The game kicked off its first anniversary celebrations almost exactly a month ago with its long-awaited release on Xbox, as well as the major 2.0 update.

Anyone who’s been playing (or following) the sci-fi RPG, however, knows that the game’s actual anniversary wouldn’t be until July. Nobody was going to complain about a big new patch, and the kick-off of a new arc of the game’s story.

Manage cookie settings

Time flies, though, and today – July 4 – is Zenless Zone Zero’s real, actual one-year anniversary. HoYoverse is celebrating yet again with another sizeable patch. Unfortunately, today only marks update 2.1’s reveal, as it won’t be released until Wednesday, July 16.

It’s called The Impending Crash of Waves, and its main narrative centres around a new faction, while introducing two new areas to the game. The new Spook Shack faction should go well with the aquatic theme of 2.1, as would Sailume Bay, and Fantasy Resort – the new areas.

This marks the start of Season 2 Chapter 2 of the game’s ongoing story, and the aforementioned Sailume Bay will be the main area where the events will take place. Fantasy Resort, on the other hand, is when the summer story – and summer event – will take place.

There are new Agents, too, of course. Ukinami Yuzuha is an S-Rank Physical Support Agent, who relies on a tankui companion named Kama to… throw bombs made of candies at enemies. Then there’s Alice Thymefield, another S-Rank member, though with the Physical Anomaly role instead. Thymefield is a swordmaster capable of fast maneuvers, which charge up her Blade Etiquette. When consuming that, Thymefield powers up her strikes.

When update 2.1 is released later this month, it’ll also do so with a new new Bangboo named Miss Esme, another S-Rank. Finally, re-runs of Void Hunter Miyabi (S-Rank Frost Anomaly), and Yanagi (S-Rank Electric Anomaly) will arrive with the update.

Catch up on our refreshed list of Zenless Zone Zero July codes, if you haven’t already.

Former Employee Claims Turn 10 Is Now A Forza Horizon Support Team

Former Employee Claims Turn 10 Is Now A Forza Horizon Support Team

A few days ago, we learned that Microsoft had gutted one of its longest-running studios, laying off roughly 50% of Turn 10, the stewards of Forza Motorsport. The writing was already on the wall, but now a former employee is alleging what we feared: Forza Motorsport is no more.

That’s according to Fred Russel, a former content creator at Turn 10. Now, before we continue, it needs to be said that Russel hasn’t worked at the company for around a decade, so scepticism is healthy. It’s very likely he still has contacts at the studio who have fed him information, but who can know for sure?

Posting on his Facebook page, Russel said “Turn 10 Studios has shuttered the Forza Motorsport space and the team is no more. A very sad day for one of the best car racing video games.”

However, Russel was questioned by another former employee of both Turn 10 and Playground Games, Kayla Goullaud, who worked as a community manager. She asked Russel where he had heard the information, stating: “I don’t believe the space is shuttered, nor is the studio closed.”

Russel replied, “the studio is open to support the Horizon side… shuttered the Forza Motorsport side only.”

His words slightly contradict his prior statement of “the team is no more.” Perhaps, though, he simply meant that the core of what was Turn 10 is now gone.

Being a support studio implies the other 50% of the team that was not laid off in the initial reports are indeed still employed and working, perhaps even still under the Turn 10 name, even if they are now nothing more than extra horsepower for the much more popular Forza Horizon series.

A quick flick through LinkedIn does reveal Turn 10 employees are still active and posting about surviving the cull. So far, I haven’t seen anything confirming what Turn 10’s role will be, but with such a massive reduction in staff it seems like a safe bet that another Forza Motorsport won’t be made by them. There’s a slim chance that Playground Games could take it over, but they are undoubtedly already very busy with Forza Horizon and the upcoming Fable. Indeed, Phil Spencer has hinted that both Forza and Fable will launch in 2026.

It’s also not clear whether the physical Turn 10 space has been or is being closed, like Russel suggests, or if it will remain open. I imagine it will be closed, though, to further reduce costs, unless there isn’t enough space to move the Turn 10 staff over to Playground Games.

We also can’t rule out the possibility that the surviving Turn 10 team will continue to update and support Forza Motorsport, a game which was designed to be an ongoing live-service style title. If Microsoft didn’t see any value in creating a full sequel, then cutting the staff in half and continuing with a small support team makes cold, hard business sense.

For now, though, we do not know exactly why Turn 10 was hit so heavily. Of course, the previous Forza Motorsport seems the most likely cause. While the prior games released every 2 years, Forza Motorsport took 6 years to launch, coming out in 2023 but launching in a state that fans were not happy about. Only in recent months with continuous updates from the team has player sentiment seemed to really turn around, with many people commenting that it took them 2 years to fix the game.

Meanwhile, the Forza Horizon games have gone from strength to strength, gaining a much larger player base in the process and even drifting over to PlayStation where it appears to have done well for itself.

12 Years After Launch, GTA V Is Finally Arriving In Two More Countries

12 Years After Launch, GTA V Is Finally Arriving In Two More Countries

Image: Rockstar Games / Kotaku

Grand Theft Auto V was released worldwide in 2013. However, Rockstar’s massively popular open-world crime sim never officially launched in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. That is finally changing later this month, and could be good news for gamers in those countries excited to play Grand Theft Auto 6 next year.

On July 3, the General Authority of Media Regulation in Saudi Arabia posted on Twitter that GTA V and Grand Theft Auto Online had both been officially rated by the organization. Both games will be available to buy and play in Saudi Arabia on July 17. The official PlayStation Middle East account also confirmed that GTA V and GTA Online would launch on the same day in the UAE.

“Enjoy the experience of the famous game Grand Theft Auto V & Grand Theft Auto Online, rated 21 and above,” posted the account, according to Google Translate. The 21+ rating is higher than those the game has received in most other countries and is roughly (but not exactly) equivalent to the ESRB’s AO (Adults Only) rating.

Still, it means that for the first time ever, gamers of appropriate age will be able to officially purchase GTA V and its online multiplayer spin-off in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in about two weeks.

Previously, players in these countries had to use workarounds, like importing physical copies of Grand Theft Auto V from other countries or creating fake accounts located in different regions for digital storefronts. Now, the full GTA V experience will be available without players having to jump through such hoops.

For gamers in this part of the world, this news is also exciting because it might be a good sign that Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t be delayed for years in the region due to rating classification issues. It might even launch in May 2026, like it’s set to everywhere else, following a delay earlier this year.

Toy Story’s Biggest Villains INVADE Disney Speedstorm’s New Season 14 | TheXboxHub
Disney Speedstorm Season 14

Andy’s toy box has been thrown wide open once again, and some unexpected new faces are ready to race in Disney Speedstorm Season 14.

Disney Speedstorm’s Season 14, titled “No Toy Gets Left Behind!”, is officially live today on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

This huge, free update brings a trio of new Toy Story racers to the track, a brand-new event structure, and some fantastic free character unlocks for all players.

This new season aims to build on the game’s excellent racing foundations with a wealth of new content and features for fans to dive into.

A Masterful Racer, A Complicated Service

When Disney Speedstorm first left early access, we found it to be a fantastic but flawed experience.

In our 3.5/5 review, we called it a “masterful technical achievement and absolutely in the upper echelons of karting games,” but noted that it was “dripfed through a live service that couldn’t possibly let you have everything at once, and a series of currencies and unlocks that seem designed to bemuse.“

Season 14, with its focus on free character unlocks and a new, more continuous event structure, feels like a positive step forward, addressing some of those early concerns by offering more content and value to all players.

The New Toys in Town

Three iconic characters from the Toy Story universe are drifting into the action, each with their own unique skills and racing class.

Meet the New Racers

Forky (Defender): Trash becomes treasure with Forky! His special move unleashes a rotating circle of garbage that protects him from hits. If an enemy collides with a piece of trash, Forky gets a small speed bonus.

Lotso (Trickster): The big bear is here to slow down the competition. Lotso can mark rivals with a big bear hug, and when he activates his main power, he lets out a fearsome growl that slows down all marked racers.

Emperor Zurg (Brawler): Evil has no bounds when Zurg is on the track. His charged attack fires a massive cluster of foam balls behind his vehicle, stunning any racers caught in its large radius.

More Friends on the Way

The new additions don’t stop there. The iconic duo of Chip ’n’ Dale are also confirmed to be coming to Disney Speedstorm as mid-season racers.

A New Way to Play (and More Free Stuff!)

Season 14 introduces some significant changes and additions to the overall game experience.

Unfolding Tales Events – A brand-new event type, Tales Events, is being introduced. These events are designed to create a more continuous experience, combining both PvE and PvP objectives into a single event with a global reward track and a competitive leaderboard.

Free for All – In a fantastic move for all players, two beloved Toy Story characters, Buzz Lightyear and Bo Peep, are now available to be unlocked for free by all players through the Season Tour rewards.

Supercharged and Spooky – The roster of Supercharged Racers is also expanding, with Hercules, Elsa, EVE, Stitch, and Goofy all receiving boosted stats and progression. For fans of something a little spookier, The Nightmare Before Christmas Vault is also returning, giving players another chance to unlock Jack Skellington, Sally, and Dr. Finkelstein.

With more free characters and a new, more rewarding event structure, Season 14 is a significant step for Disney Speedstorm.

A race track featuring Forky, Lotso, and Zurg is an undeniably chaotic and compelling reason to jump back in and find out for yourself. The race is on!

And if you don’t yet own Disney Speedstorm? You can grab it for free from the likes of the Xbox Store.
