After 12 years, a new Warframe quest explains one of its most complex system



Warframe, the space ninja game where you can feed yourself to a giant mouth and drive a motorcycle in the year 1999, has a new update. The Vallis Undermind exemplifies the whimsy that has come to define Warframe in recent years.

The expansion, released on Wednesday, introduces a new mushroom-themed warframe that does a little dance, along with a whole new explorable fungal area. But it’s also going back to basics, with another quest geared at making sure this complicated, expansive 12-year-old MMO makes sense to new players.

Called “The Teacher,” this is the long-awaited quest that teaches Warframe players how to use one of the game’s most basic — yet most intricate — systems: modding.

In Warframe, mods are augments that can be added to your character or your weapons to enhance their abilities. They range from the straightforward (increase damage or speed up reload rate) to the devastatingly complex. Warframe YouTubers will craft hour-long videos about idealized builds that use powerful mods in combination with each other to create devastating effects.

Not me though! I am comically bad at modding. Every time I level up a new warframe or weapon, my try-hard boyfriend appears behind me and says, “show me your mods,” and I look at him like a dog that has gotten into the garbage as I open the menu to reveal that I’ve added the most basic damage modifier to my gun, then forgot to ever touch the mechanic again.

After speaking with the developers who worked on “The Teacher,” I know I’m not the only one.

“The Teacher” was developed in a collaboration between Warframe developer Digital Extremes, who provided the narrative sauce, and Sumo Digital, who designed the mission, which will appear early in Warframe for new players.

In the quest, the player is asked to retrieve a new segment for their spaceship, but they’re interrupted by a menacing, powerful warrior called Teshin, who takes away the player’s abilities and melee weapons, and forces them to engage with the mod system to handily demonstrate its power.

Many of the Sumo Digital team were already fans of Warframe, but others had never played before, according to principal games designer Sam Baker. It was this outside perspective that proved critical.

“The first thing we did was basically sit behind them and go right play through the tutorial and take prodigious notes on everywhere they fell out,” Baker said. Early-game menu pop-ups introduced players to modding. But Baker and the Sumo Digital team noted that they didn’t work on everyone.

“Some people didn’t see basic instructions where it’s flashing on the screen saying put the mod in the slot,” he said.

“I think a lot of people were maybe getting into the early game, seeing mods, not really understanding it,” said lead narrative designer Ryan Mole from Digital Extremes. “I think it was really important, at the end of the quest, for players to think, ‘Hey, modding is cool. I want to try more of this.’”

Warframe’s mods allow players to create stupidly powerful synergies that turn the screen into a blitz of numbers. But “The Teacher” isn’t really about that. There will be some long-time players who wish the quest was geared more towards their needs, like creating powerful and specific builds catered towards running Warframe’s ultra-difficult Steel Path mode. But in talking to Baker and Mole, it became clear that “The Teacher” is filling a real and significant gap in the game for early players — and that doing so isn’t as simple as it looks.

“There’s lots of little tweaks and little subtle things in the background there to just sort of show you what it can do rather than tell you,” Baker said. For example, one of the goals of “The Teacher” is to show how mods can create powerful elemental status effects; in this case, Magnetic damage that eats chunks out of enemy shields.

“[…] We had to change the weapon to be a burst-fire weapon, because it shows off the proc rate more,” Baker said. “But you don’t want to […] say to people, ‘oh yeah, actually on a base level mod, you only got a few percentage chance to proc an elemental effect.’ So how do you tutorialize that without changing it?”

Experienced Warframe players will instinctively look for that kind of weapon effect and understand how it works, but new players have to be taught to pay attention to these things.

“It’s not a kind of game development that we’ve had to worry about as much on Warframe just because that hasn’t been our focus,” said Mole. “But part of it not being our focus is that we never really told people how to use mods.”

“There’s so much that goes into just making a really simple mission that — honestly — you can blast through in about 15 minutes,” said Baker. “But it’s months and months of work for loads of people.”

Baker was visibly glowing with excitement over being able to work on a game that he loves — and to craft a mission for one of his favorite characters.

“I love Teshin,” he said. “He’s my 8-year-old internal self’s idea of what’s cool.”

In the 12 years since its release, Warframe has been in a consistent battle with its own player onboarding process. There are lots of complex systems that players don’t need to worry about — and won’t even have access to — until hours into the game. And others, like modding, that scale in complexity depending on how much time you want to invest. An update earlier this year streamlined the early game so that players could reach Warframe’s mind-bending plot developments with less time on the grind up front.

With “The Teacher,” it’s clear that the developers are doubling down on a commitment to make sure Warframe’s early game experience doesn’t stay locked in 2013. New players can get their foot in the door — even if they miss the menu prompts.

It will cost 1 Coal Ore to finish cooking the Dreamango Boba Tea. Upon making Dreamango Boba Tea for the first time, you will learn the recipe. Here on Indie Retro News, we love a good retro conversion or remake, and Mutant Monty, developed by Stephen Ancell is as retro as you can get! This is a faithful Amiga conversion of the Amstrad CPC and C64 1984 classic Mutant Monty by Artic in all its pretty psychedelic coloured goodness. The aim of this game is to collect all the gems and reach the exit on each of the games levels. Also make sure to rescue the damsel if you make it to level 40.

While the game is still in development by Cobour, and a demo has been made available, here’s the latest from the website. “Some time ago Kevin and I decided to do an Amiga-conversion of the old 8-bit classic “Mutant Monty”. This game is remembered by Kevin as a childhood classic and he was looking for a developer to do the coding. Because we are both interested in the Scorpion engine we chose that option do re-create the game. The engine gives us the tools to speed up development and focus on fine-tuning the gameplay rather that hunting bugs in assembly. As a designing reference we chose the C64 version of the game (Amstrad version has some small differences here and there). Kevins graphic design uses more colors than the original but preserves the charm of the classic appearance”.

Battlefield 6 Reverts Big Change After 48 Hours Of Fan Backlash



On October 15, the devs behind Battlefield 6 announced that the game’s most popular mode, Conquest, would be tweaked in a big way that would potentially lead to shorter matches. This change was nearly universally hated by the online Battlefield community, and now, just 48 hours later, EA is reversing course as it continues to promise tweaks and fixes for the recently released online FPS.

Battlefield 6 launched last week to massive sales and high player numbers, making it already one of the most successful entries in the long-running milsim series. But, as with any popular online video game these days, a lot of players online have spent nearly every day since launch offering feedback, complaining, or pointing out problems that need to be fixed. And EA is working on a lot of this, with fixes incoming for overly bright maps, tweaks to movement, and more. But among these many recent changes, one caught players on Reddit and social media off guard. For some reason, EA and Battlefield Studios lowered the ticket count for all levels when playing BF6‘s flagship mode, Conquest. And oh boy, were people mad about this change.

For those not familiar with Conquest in BF6, the mode is all about capturing various points on large maps and holding them. The more you hold, the slower your ticket count ticks down. And any time a player dies and respawns, a ticket is also removed from that team. The side that hits 0 first loses. Before October 15, every map in BF6 featured 1000 tickets for both sides. But then that was tweaked, with different, lower starting ticket values depending on which map you were playing. EA claimed this was because battles were going on too long and timing out, so the idea was that lower ticket counts would lead to more matches ending because a team hit 0 and not because the timer ran out.

This tweak angered many online as it seemed like something nobody was asking for. Likewise, many players, myself included, have played for many days now and have never seen a match end due to the timer running out. Other players were also mad because for them, Battlefield’s Conquest mode has always been about long matches that go back and forth for upwards of 20 minutes. As many pointed out online in thousands of messages and posts, if you want shorter matches, there are plenty of modes in BF6 that offer that experience. Lowering the ticket count ultimately felt like a solution for a problem that didn’t exist, and EA seemingly agrees because it’s already reversed course on the controversial change.

On October 17, the official Battlefield social media account on Twitter posted that the devs had “heard your feedback” and the studio was reverting the change.

“We’ve heard your feedback about the recent reduction of Conquest starting tickets and will be reverting the ticket count across all maps to their original launch value of 1,000 and 45-minute timed rounds,” posted the official account. “Please note that on larger maps such as Mirak Valley and Firestorm, this change may lead to longer match durations. We’ll continue monitoring player feedback and gameplay data to ensure the pacing and overall flow of matches feel right.”

It’s very odd to me that EA seems so concerned about long matches in Conquest, as that’s always been how the mode works, something other players pointed out in the comments below. I think the best way to solve this problem is to just add a “Fast Conquest” mode that has fewer tickets and is all about keeping matches short. Players who really prefer that version of Conquest can go enjoy it, and everyone else can grind away in 40-minute matches that go back and forth.

In fact, I’d love to see EA do some official playlists that feature 2000-ticket matches, as sometimes I just want to spend an hour fighting in Operation Firestorm, you know? At least for now, Battlefield 6‘s most iconic mode is back to normal, and just in time for some big XP changes that should make it easier to unlock new gear.

During yesterday’s Showcase stream, the Devs revealed a ton of upcoming content in Disney Dreamlight Valley. The new content includes a free content update featuring Cinderella, a brand-new DLC with four new characters, rideable horses, new gameplay features, and more. In addition to the new content reveal, the Devs also showed the 1st Roadmap for 2026. The roadmap includes a plan for three major updates. Moreover, Disney Dreamlight Valley’s 2026 roadmap hints at new characters with every update poster.

New Potential Characters Coming to Disney Dreamlight Valley in 2026

The new roadmap (2026) of Disney Dreamlight Valley includes a plan for three free content updates. These updates will follow the same release pattern as the current year’s roadmap. The first update will come out in Early 2026, the next one in Spring 2026, and the third one in Summer 2026. With the reveal of the posters for these updates, we might have some strong guesses for the upcoming characters with each update. Here are our speculations for the upcoming characters in the first half of 2026 in Disney Dreamlight Valley.

The first update poster shows a bowl of Spaghetti and Meatballs in a Parisian Street, hinting strongly at The Lady and the Tramp. The spring update poster gives hints about Pocahontas, symbolized by a raccoon sitting next to her necklace and orange leaves. Lastly, the summer update poster gives a strong hint at Hercules due to his Sandals next to a phil. Moreover, the biome gives a vibe of Mythopia from the Storybook Vale, where players find Hades.

Now, these are all speculations, but possible ones. We still have a lot of time before we get confirmations about the upcoming characters. In fact, we will get to know the first new character of the next year, possibly at the end of January or in February. It is because the early 2026 update will not roll out until February.

After a successful first showcase in April earlier this year, Galaxies is back with its premier autumn showcase, promising to bring new info on a wealth of new games, with exclusive announcements, world premiers, and much more besides. If you’re interested in smaller games with unique and interesting angles, you should do yourself a favour and tune into next week’s showcase.

If you’re keen to learn more about what the Galaxies team has been cooking up – with new announcements from the likes of Nacon, Saber Interactive, Team17, and more – here’s what you need to know.

How to Watch

You can tune in on Twitch or YouTube, on 23rd October at 8pm GMT/ 9pm CEST / 12pm PST / 3pm EST to see what’s due to arrive in the coming weeks, months and years. The event will be hosted once again by friend of VG247, Jane Douglas, returning after her stellar work in the showcase earlier this year. What to Expect

The biggest surprise of the presentation will be a trio of reveals of some anticipated games: there’s an open-world survival/crafting title from Unifiq, PlaySide Studios will show off a new Dumb Ways to Die game for PC and Console (a series which has been confined to mobile and Meta Quest), and we’ll get a first look at MOUSE: PI For Hire (an animated FPS that brings the world of crime noir to ’30’s cartoons – it looks really great).

Elsewhere, Team 17 is showing up with three indie titles and Nacon has a release date reveal for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, and a new look at Edge of Memories (which we enjoyed when we played it at Gamescom). Horror experts Blumhouse Games will also be at the event to talk about its games and show off a new trailer for Sleep Awake.

Speaking of horror, if you’re a Dead by Daylight player, Behaviour Interactive will have exclusive Twitch Drops available to all Galaxies Showcase viewers, focused on the game’s newest update, Sinister Grace.

Also expect announcements from Secret Mode, Fireshine, Owlcat Games, Noodle Cat Games, Big Fan Games (coming in with more Boltgun 2 info,) and ESDigital Games and Far Far Games present a brand-new trailer for Bylina, a skill-based action-RPG based on Slavic legends.

Fortnite live events have been very popular ever since the first one was released in 2018. They usually attract millions of players, and some of them have set impressive records. Due to this, it’s no surprise that many players are excited, as two major events are set to come out within the next few weeks.

Once the Fortnitemares event concludes, Epic Games will release another season. This will be a mini-season, similar to one that took place earlier this year with the Star Wars theme. The best part? The upcoming season will be introduced with a live event, and it will end with one as well!

When will the next Fortnite live event begin?

The next Fortnite live event will likely come on October 31, the night before the release of the mini-season. Leakers claim that the event will have an extended downtime, which will likely last 12 hours. After that, Epic Games will release the Simpsons collaboration, as the entire season will be focused on it.

While adding iconic characters like Homer and Marge sounds like a great idea, that’s not everything that will come. If leaks turn out to be true, Epic will also release a new map that will bring Springfield to the Fortnite universe.

The mini-season will likely last for approximately four weeks, ending in late November and bringing a new chapter. Once again, the Fortnite developer will release a chapter-ending event, which will be massive. The last such event drew a crowd of 14.3 million concurrent players, making it the second most successful event in the game’s history.

As we approach the end of the season, as well as the chapter, we expect Epic to release more information about the upcoming events. For now, however, we can enjoy the latest XP buff and level up the Battle Pass before it expires.

Just one day after his shock departure, former Assassin’s Creed franchise boss Marc-Alexis Côté has confirmed that he did not want to leave Ubisoft.

Marc-Alexis Côté took the role of executive producer role in 2018. Since then, four mainline Assassin’s Creed games and one VR title have been released. But that came to an end on October 15 when Marc-Alexis Côté suddenly departed Ubisoft, instantly generating speculation that something had occurred behind-the-scenes.

“Many of you have expressed surprise that I would choose to leave Assassin’s Creed after so many years, especially given the passion I still hold for it. The truth is simple: I did not make that choice,” wrote Côté on LinkedIn.

“Ubisoft decided to transfer the leadership of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to someone closer to its new organizational structure. A different position was mentioned, but it did not carry the same scope, mandate, or continuity with the work I had been entrusted with in recent years.”

Côté did say that he has no resentment toward the company and is grateful for his time there, but that “I also owe it to my teams, past and present, to say this plainly: I did not walk away. I stayed at my post until Ubisoft asked me to step aside.”

Côté’s exit is likely linked to the formation of Ubisoft’s new subsidiary company, Vantage Studios, which is partly owned by Chinese giant Tencent. The new company holds the rights to all of Ubisoft’s biggest IP, such as Asssassin’s Creed and Far Cry. Vantage is believed to have officially begun operating recently.
