SteamOS 3.7.18 Beta available with a few nuisance bugs being squashed

SteamOS 3.7.18 Beta “Old Enough to Vote” was released by Valve today, bringing in a few more fixes for some annoying sounding issues. In case you live under a rock we’re also getting some new SteamOS systems with the Steam Frame and Steam Machine you should go and read up on.

As it’s a Beta you’ll need to change your system updates channel to test it, or just wait for Valve to roll it out for the next stable SteamOS Linux release. You can change it via Settings > System > System Update Channel. The most recent stable update is SteamOS 3.7.17 from early November.

What’s changed? See below:

Fixed the performance overlay sometimes showing zero for CPU power draw.
Fixed audio not always switching to/from 3.5mm headphones correctly when inserted or removed.
Fixed a regression where certain in-game overlay UI elements could cause a frame time drop upon appearing.
Fixed the frame limiter interacting badly with VRR after an extended period.
Fixed an issue where Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horizon 5 would only display a blank window.

On top of that we also only just recently finally saw the release of Proton 10, to bring even better game compatibility to SteamOS machines and Linux desktop systems.

Interview – Sohei Niikawa on Etrange Overlord and life after the board room | TheSixthAxis

Interview – Sohei Niikawa on Etrange Overlord and life after the board room | TheSixthAxis

For many people, the absolute pinnacle of a career is the seat at the top of the table, to be president or CEO of a big international company. What people seldom think of is what happens after you step down. For Sohei Niikawa, who was president of Nippon Ichi Software until three years ago, it’s a chance to start over. This do-over, as he calls it, is one step towards his vision for a happier world.

On a crisp November’s day, Niikawa sat down with me to discuss not only his first game as an indie developer, Etrange Overlord, but how he got here and, most importantly, what comes next.

“So in Japan, we’re calling it a ‘Sushi Lane Musical Action Adventure’,” he tells me, after watching the trailer together. “For the West, we’re calling it a ‘Revolving Lane Musical Action RPG’.”

These sushi lanes carry various power-ups and special weapons to our heroine, Étrange von Rosenburg — a duke’s daughter who was wrongfully accused of treason, condemned to hell and sentenced to death. Waking up after her execution, she finds herself beset by demons. Unperturbed, she sets about conquering Hell so that she can live her best afterlife.

It’s a light-hearted dark comedy that fits perfectly with the franchise Niikawa is best known for: Disgaea.

Sohei Niikawa was producer and writer for most of the Disgaea series to date.

The Disgaea series is set across various Netherworlds, and sees antihero demons embark on humorous stories between rounds of tactical RPG action. Disgaea 7 Complete, which was released earlier this year, is the latest edition of this, and we gave it a whopping 9/10.

“The thing that I really like about Etrange Overlord,” Niikawa said, “is the main character. She has a very free spirit. There’s a lot of overlap between her and I, with me also having begun my own sort of second life after leaving my previous company.

“I’m working really hard in a lot of ways because I want her to be popular.”

Etrange Overlord characters

Niikawa-san continues, “This will be the first title that I’m releasing since I started working independently from NIS.” This do-over, as he calls it, also has him starting from scratch as he claims to be in a relatively weak position within the games industry right now. He is, after all, an indie developer releasing the first game he wrote under his new pen name, Roman Kitayama, and his new company, Super Niche.

“I’m working really hard in a lot of ways because I want her to be popular.”

Naturally, that hasn’t stopped him from adding an impressive roster of names to Etrange’s credits.

“In Japan there’s a famous developer called Gemdrops, and the president of this company happens to be the same age as me.” This president famously worked on Niikawa’s first game, Rhapsody: a Musical Adventure. “As soon as he knew that I had left the company, he reached out to me saying he would like to make a game, and so that’s how Estrange Overlord came about.

“This will be the first time we’re making games together in about 30 years! Essentially, Etrange Overload is kind of a mix of that Rhapsody title we first worked on together and Disgaea.”

And this isn’t the only pedigree going into Etrange. “The character designer for the game is actually Shinichirou Otsuka, who’s very famous for his work on the RE:Zero series,” Niikawa adds.

Famous names

The talk of famous names turned our conversation towards Roman Kitayama, the name Niikawa used to pen Etrange Overlord. I asked what this name meant and why he chose it.

“So of course, in Japanese, ‘Kitayama’ can mean a ‘Northern mountain’. And the first place where I built my home was a northern mountain.”

But these are not the kanji Niikawa picked for himself. And in true Japanese fashion, there’s some wordplay at hand. Instead of the obvious 北山, Niikawa chose 喜多山 for Kitayama.

“That’s a really uncool name, dad…”

The Yama bit (mountain) is the same, as a nod towards his home. “But for ‘Kita’, I purposefully used the kanji for both ‘to enjoy’ or ‘to be excited about something’ as well as the kanji for ‘a lot’. So, it means ‘to have a lot of enjoyment’.”

The Roman bit is a bit more complicated. “In Japanese, the phrase romantic doesn’t refer to romantic comedies etc, but more of a classical, romanticised idea — that sense of dreams or the kinds of things that that interest us or excite us.

Etrange Overlord Hell

The problem, however, is that as cool as Niikawa thinks his new name is, the younger generation may disagree.

“My daughter tells me that’s a really uncool name, dad…”

Current games

In the spirit of our regular What We Played column, and because it’s interesting to know what games fuel game makers, I asked Niikawa to name the last game he played that really stuck with him.

The problem, of course, is that Niikawa is working so hard on writing novels and designing games that he can only play games in short bursts — ”I really like games that are very replayable, and I only need to play them for 5–10 minutes, here and there.”

“Solitaire is the game I’m playing most right now! To be honest with you, I never played Solitaire until this year. I’m like ‘Wow, Solitaire is really fun!’ So I’m actually doing a little bit of experimenting on my own right now to see if maybe I can make a game that’s like Solitaire but with a little bit of me in it?”

Starting over

Returning to Niikawa’s career arc, the idea of a career do-over by starting his second life at the same time as Etrange is a beautiful way to look at things.

“I want to take both my failures and my successes from my time at NIS into my second life,” he explains. “I’m in a very interesting situation where it’s kind of like I’m playing a roguelite.

“I’ve jumped in, I’ve built up experience and then I got game over. Now I’m starting over from the beginning, but I get to utilise my experience to drive me forward.”

Those experiences are clear, both in terms of game design and running a company.

“I’m starting over from the beginning, but I get to utilise my experience to drive me forward.”

In terms of game design, the tone is the most obvious thing he is carrying through. The mix of dark underworld vibes with light-hearted tone and at-times slapstick writing is something of a signature for Niikawa.

“There’s a couple of reasons for that,” Niikawa explains, when I asked what draws him to the theme of lighthearted darkness. “One is that there’s not too many other people that tend to do that, but then the other part is just simply because I like it.”

Etrange Overlord cutscene

Ultimately, Niikawa says, games are entertainment, and he wants his games to bring people joy. This, he says, drives how he builds his games. They have to be both kind to the user and easy to understand. The problem is that if they’re too difficult to get into, the player won’t get to the bit that makes the game interesting.

“What really gives you a good idea about whether you’re going in the right direction is when somebody sits down to play your game and gets a game over. Do they still want to continue playing despite that?”

“I think what becomes important there is how interesting the story is and how interesting the mechanics are, but also is there a sense of ‘If I just keep going or keep trying a little bit more you know can I get a little bit further?’

“So whenever I’m working on a game I tend to pay close attention to those first two hours of gameplay to see if it meets those requirements: is it kind of the player and is it easy to follow?”

Legacy

It’s difficult to look forward all the time, especially with such an impressive past. We are, after all, we’re all human. And as creators, it’s easy to get caught up in past projects. Not so for Niikawa. When asked if there were aspects of past projects he would revisit, his answer was instant.

“I don’t really think about it that much, to be honest! I don’t focus on the past. I just think about what I’ve learned so far and I build on it to keep making things better.”

Etrange Overlord combat

So, what does Niikawa think about his legacy, if he’s not one to look over his shoulder?

“For NIS, I feel like the company itself is my legacy. I genuinely think that had it not been for Rhapsody and Disgaea, it wouldn’t exist as the company it is now. I take great meaning from having worked at NIS America and helped to build that company.

“But moving forward with Super Niche, I want my legacy to be more focused around not just games necessarily but all kinds of forms of entertainment.

“I’m 52 years old. I don’t know if I’ll live to be 70 or 80, but honestly right up till the end I want to keep making new content.

“And that could be multiple things — not just games but light novels, manga and board games. There’s a lot of different things that I’d like to work on.”

“I’m 52 years old. I don’t know if I’ll live to be 70 or 80, but honestly right up till the end I want to keep making new content”

Niikawa’s love for entertaining people really shines through as he picked up a Super Famicon cartridge that had been repurposed as a business card holder.

“This is actually an Indie game that’s in development right now,” he tells me. “There’s a man named Yoshitsuna Kobayashi who worked with me on the very first Disgaea, and he’s the person putting this video game together.

“He’s actually already quit the games industry once, but I’ve always thought he is a genius game creator and if he were to disappear from the industry I think it would be a huge blow. So I’ve kind of invited him to sort of come home, as it were, and work with me on making games in the future.

“And I look at that as a very meaningful activity. My greatest desire is actually to fill the world with more and more interesting pieces of media, whether it’s my own works that I’m invested in doing or helping someone else put their work out to the world as a producer.

“Really, behind all of that is just the idea that the more positive things that we can put out into the world for people to enjoy, the better. If people can enjoy them, and if that helps the world become a more peaceful place, nothing could make me happier.”

The Simpsons x Fortnite season is slowly coming to its end. The mini-season is scheduled to end on Saturday, November 29, followed by a massive live event. The event will introduce us to Chapter 7, and for the first time, players will be able to test it early. Interestingly, the early access version of the event will have no spoilers, but you can get XP for testing it.

On Thursday and Friday, you can log in to Fortnite and queue up for the test event. Doing this, you will help Epic Games make sure that everything is ready for the real event. In exchange for your time, you will receive 80,000 XP, which is good enough for one Battle Pass level.

How to participate in a test event in Fortnite?

Starting with Thursday at 1:40 PM Eastern Time, you will see a new playlist called Epic Event Test. To participate in it, all you need to do is select this playlist and ready up. Once you do this, you will be put into a match, which Epic will then use stress test servers.

If you cannot make it on Thursday, the Fortnite developer will release the test playlist on Friday at the same time.

If you join the event playlist, you will be granted 80,000 Season XP. However, it’s important to note that you won’t receive the XP right away. Instead, Epic Games will grant it to your account later this week, likely after the conclusion of the second test session.

The real event will take place on Saturday at 2 PM Eastern Time. It will be an event that will conclude The Simpsons season and bring Chapter 7 to the popular video game.

Alex Co has been writing about games for 15 years and running, and is a huge fan of online shooters and anything horror related.

While Sucker Punch Productions has been steady in pushing post-launch updates for Ghost of Yotei, they’ve usually focused on bug fixes more than anything else.

Well, that’s changing next week, as the developers are finally giving the player base the feature they’re requesting for the most since the game was released last month.

In other Ghost of Yotei news, Sucker Punch developers admitted to having cut some of the game’s most emotional content. Perhaps we’ll see it as DLC? No announcement of the sort has been made outside of the Legends multiplayer mode inbound next year.

12 Kirby Air Riders beginner’s tips to help you win it all

0
12 Kirby Air Riders beginner’s tips to help you win it all

Kirby Air Riders is an extremely unique racing game, as the meat of the game isn’t its actual racing game mode, but the City Trial mode that shoves you onto a huge island to collect buffs and items before you have to complete a minigame challenge. This game is chaotic, as your vehicles (called “machines”) can get fast and out of control very quickly — but that’s part of the charm.

For those who haven’t played the original GameCube title, the wild controls and chaos may come as a shock, but don’t worry, we’re here to help. Below, we list some beginner’s tips for Kirby Air Riders that should be useful to both new players and veterans who played the original game.

Pick up all the machines in Road Trip

If you come across a machine in the new story-based Road Trip mode, grab it. You’ll need the full set of 22 in order to unlock a ton of different features, and if you pass on a vehicle, you’ll be able to grab it in the new game plus. However, you may have to replay Road Trip a few times if you don’t pick them up as you see them, since some machines only appear in certain branched paths.

Test out all the different vehicles

Everything is different from the original game. The trusty ol’ Shadow Star isn’t the best machine anymore, so you should definitely try giving each vehicle a spin before you decide on your favorite. As expected, some are better than others when it comes to racing, gliding, or beating up your enemies, so you’ll want to be an expert on what’s the best to pick.

Image: Bandai Namco Studios, Sora Ltd./Nintendo via Polygon

Also, complete some lessons

With the above being said, this game handles and plays a little bit differently than the original Kirby Air Ride, so it’s worth playing through some lessons and getting a feel for the gameplay. The Road Trip mode is also great for learning some basics, since you’ll be tasked with completing such a variation of stadiums and tracks.

Fuss around with your settings

There are so many settings to fiddle around with in this game to make your experience more comfortable. If you have trouble with motion sickness, then you can add a reticle or a frame around the screen to help with that. You can remap your buttons (all two of them!). You can turn on motion controls! You can customize what shows up on your HUD. It’s very customizable and worth fiddling around with.

For reference, I usually get motion sick from games, though the original Kirby Air Ride didn’t make me feel queasy. This game started to a little bit, but once I turned on the reticle in the center of the screen, all that queasiness went away. Nice!

Always do weird stuff

See a bomb in Road Trip? Run into it. Got a field full of trees in City Trial? Smash into all of them. There are typically checklist achievements behind all of these types of interactions, so you’ll definitely want to do every wacky thing you can.

Look for hints in City Trial, but beware of tricks

Sometimes some ominous text will show up on the screen during your City Trial run, giving you a hint to what the Stadium at the end could be, but sometimes… it’s a scam! Keep your eye out for typos or trickster-y text here, as those types of announcements will be lies.

Spin on your rivals coming up behind you

If you can feel an opponent riding your star trail about to pass you, spin on them to dish out damage and push them away. Dealing damage will give you a little boost, too.

Keep your eye out for special rare boxes

In City Trial, you’ll want to specifically keep your eye out for these regal rare boxes, which will get pointed out to you by a golden box marker on your map. They often have a ton of buffing items and even a legendary air ride piece, too, if you’re lucky.

Image: Bandai Namco Studios, Sora Ltd./Nintendo via Polygon

You’ll need to play a bit of everything to unlock all the characters and colors

Various characters (and alternate colors) are locked behind checklists for the various game modes. Almost every character has at least two unlock methods, so you can ignore some of the game modes, if you’re not a stickler for completion. For example, if you want to unlock Star Man, you’ll need to complete a specific checkbox in either Top Ride or City Trial. Completing the second of the two achievements will unlock Star Man’s alternate color scheme.

There’s also specific City Trial Stadiums locked behind checkboxes for Road Trip, so make sure to complete that story multiple times, too.

Let the checklists guide you

If you’re trying to go for a specific checkbox, like beating a specific City Trial Stadium with a specific vehicle or racing on a specific map, press the Plus button while on the respective checkbox. This will automatically take you to the game mode you need to be in, with the required settings (if there are any) set up.

Notably, for checkboxes that require a specific Stadium to be played, you can just play the Stadium itself and skip the city portion of the City Trial. However, you will have to do the Stadium with no buffs, so some challenges may be too hard to do this with just the unbuffed vehicle.

Faster doesn’t automatically mean better in City Trial

You might be tempted to make an ultimate race machine, loading your vehicle up with speed-based stats, but being the fastest isn’t always the best. A lot of the Stadium challenges get a bit harder if your vehicle is too fast, especially if you have to aim at specific targets, whether it’s pushing down buttons in an area, or flying through hoops.

Use it or lose it — your special gauge doesn’t stay full forever!

After your special ability gauge fills up, it’ll sit for a second, and then begin to deplete, whether you choose to use it or not. If you’re in a good place to blast past some enemies or release a powerful attack, you should definitely use it before it’s too late. There are times when it may not be ideal to speed off, so consider carefully before you press Y.

Get Free Walmart Cash With The Lego Star Wars 3-In-1 Gift Set Bundle

The Lego Star Wars 3-in-1 Adventure Gift Set includes $9 Walmart Cash until November 20. Walmart Cash is essentially a gift card/store credit that can be used the next time you shop on Walmart’s online storefront. You’re essentially saving 20% on the $45 Star Wars Lego bundle. Exclusive to Walmart, this Star Wars 3-in-1 Gift Set comes with two playsets based on The Clone Wars and one from The Mandalorian.

The 423-piece bundle will be of particular interest to minifigure collectors and kids who love staging battles with their Lego Star Wars creations. You’ll get nine minifigures, five droids, three vehicles, and several interactive weapons and structures that are ideal add-ons for larger Lego Star Wars builds.

Walmart has three other exclusive Lego Gift Sets, each of which is eligible for the Walmart Cash bonus. The Lego Minecraft 5-in-1 Gift Set is the same price and also includes $9 Walmart Cash. Two $25 bundles come with $5 Walmart Cash: Lego City 4-in-1 Gift Set and Lego Friends 2-in-1 Gift Set.

Lego Star Wars 3-in-1 Adventure Gift Set – Only at Walmart

Official Lego Gift Sets have exclusive packaging, and if past Walmart-exclusive Star Wars bundles are any indication, this new one will be priced well-above MSRP after the holiday season. Lego Star Wars 3-in-1 Jedi Masters Gift Set sold out before the holiday season ended. That bundle retailed for $50 and is going for $80 from a reseller right now (shipped by Walmart). That’s a big jump in price, but it’s actually not too bad considering the three builds are valued at $50 and one of them, Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter, is retired and no longer available at major retailers.

World of Spells – This first person action game for the 48k ZX Spectrum looks impressive

Another ZX Spectrum game worth checking out is the recent release of Jtpl’s fast-paced first-person action game for the classic ZX Spectrum 48K called ‘World of Spells’. A game that the creator says “you can watch in amazement as our silly rubber wonder pumps out a Wolfenstein 3D-like, full 360 freedom of movement action, with >50 frames per bleeding’ second. It simply has to be seen to be believed” To coincide with this news, Saberman has provided a video showing it being played via 48k emulation.

Here’s the latest. “World of Spells is a fast-paced first-person action game for the classic ZX Spectrum 48K. Rescue the princess, battle ghosts and dragons, and experience a kind of 3D adventure that never existed back in the Spectrum’s golden era. Enjoy dynamic gameplay: watch fireballs bounce off mirrors, uncover the mysteries of dragon fire, and ultimately save the kingdom! Visit dungeons, castles, and ice lake. A true treat for every ZX Spectrum enthusiast. First game that really showcases the speed of which ZX Spectrum was capable of. Music by Lee Bee, best musician working on platform. And above all – it is fun to play!”

Battlefield 6 is getting a free trial next week with… a questionable selection of maps, but at least the modes are good

Presumably as a way of marching ever forward towards its (alleged) 100 million player goal for Battlefield 6, EA has announced that the multiplayer shooter will be getting its first free trial later this month.

This is, of course, specifically for players to sample the core, paid component of the game, as the recently launched Redsec remains free-to-play. Redsec, however, offers modes like battle royale and Gauntlet, which aren’t quite the traditional Battlefield experience.

The Battlefield 6 trial arrives next Tuesday, November 25. It will run for one week, ending the following Tuesday, December 2. The trial will be available on all platforms, but won’t include all content from the full game.

Instead, players will have access to three of the game’s maps and five of its modes. Siege of Cairo will be there alongside Season 1’s two new maps: Eastwood, and Blackwell Fields. It’s not the strongest line-up of maps, considering Eastwood is already cut from the larger Fort Lyndon battle royale map that Redsec players should be quite familiar with, but it’s something.

As for modes, you can pick from Conquest, Breakthrough, Sabotage, and Team Deathmatch. Battlefield Studios didn’t say what the fifth mode is going to be, but a dedicated blog post with more information is set to arrive next week.

Beyond the trial’s content itself, the timing is certainly great. Battlefield 6 just received one of its biggest patches, kicking off the second phase of its first season. So far this season, we’ve seen two new maps, several new weapons – but more importantly, solutions to problems the game’s had since launch, as well as fixes to longstanding bugs.

The miserable XP progression Battlefield 6 launched with is far more tolerable. Challenges and Assignments are much easier to understand and actually finish. The often maligned weapon dispersion has been toned down. Some of the wildest vehicle bugs have been fixed. And Portal has a host of experiences that go beyond just bot farms.

In essence, Battlefield 6 feels like its reached its 1.0 status, which makes this a great entry point for new players, even if the trial could’ve used more of the game’s better maps.

New Walmart Ad Stars Walton Goggins As The Grinch And Oh No

New Walmart Ad Stars Walton Goggins As The Grinch And Oh No

Merry Christmas! But sorry, I think you must have been bad because all I have to offer you is this new Walmart commercial starring Walton Goggins, aka the Ghoul from Amazon’s Fallout series, in a crass attempt to cash in on millennial nostalgia for that Jim Carrey Grinch movie.

Yup, Walton Goggins took what I assume was a sizeable paycheck to star in a new, very expensive-looking Walmart ad that is clearly inspired by Dr. Seuss’ holiday classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and more specifically by the 2000 film adaptation starring Jim Carrey. (Nobody tell Amazon that Goggins is in a Walmart ad!) Goggins not only looks like Carrey’s Grinch, but even (mostly) does a solid impersonation of the comedian’s famous portrayal of the Christmas-hating monster. Here’s the ad:

It’s better than the animated movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch, that you likely forgot even got made, but come on, Goggins. How much money do you need? Really, I can spot you a fifty if that helps you avoid shit like this.

As I’ve said before, we really need to once again start bullying celebrities and actors who do TV commercials. Selling out isn’t cool, kids. Back in my day, you’d go to Japan and do ads there to hide the fact you were a sellout. And in fact, you get put on the naughty list for doing it.  True story, I asked Santa Claus and he confirmed it to me. He also said being a games journalist gets you on the naughty list, too, and then complained that my Black Ops 7 review was too harsh and slammed the door in my face. Anyway, this commercial is gross! Bah, humbug, I say!
