Best Survival-Horror Game From Every Console Generation

Best Survival-Horror Game From Every Console Generation

Although it had its roots in early PC titles like Alone in the Dark and bizarre NES games such as Sweet Home, the survival horror genre didn’t truly get underway until the fifth generation of consoles with Resident Evil.

What started with an escape from a decrepit mansion has spawned an entire cottage industry. Both indie and AAA developers have become rather adept at this style of game, which is not surprising considering they’ve had a lot of practice since 1996.

10 Most Difficult Survival Horror Games, Ranked

Who ever mentioned surviving a horror situation would be easy? Nobody, and you can feel that difficulty in these games.

Every console generation since then has had some form of survival horror game. It’s right up there with JRPGs and first-person shooters in terms of prolificness, so you won’t have to look far during a console’s life to find a dreaded tale of horrific nightmares to escape from.

As we look back at the previous five generations of survival horror games on home consoles, it’s important to note how much this genre has evolved and expanded itself. Each generation has improved on something in some way, and the strength of this style of game shines through immaculately.

Resident Evil 2

Fifth Generation

claire on the street

The original Resident Evil may have codified a lot of the elements that make this genre what it is, but the sequel wasn’t just an improvement. In many ways, it’s still the blueprint for how to make a game like this work.

Sometimes it’s hard to determine what makes a game perfect, but I truly believe Resident Evil 2 is perfect. Everything about its pace, structure, and story is flawless.

The pre-rendered backgrounds are some of the best the console has ever seen, and the 3D characters are a seamless fit. It’s one of the best uses of the technique ever seen during this era.

It also has some unique writing for the time. There’s a certain otherworldly, almost Shakespearean way to how the characters speak. It’s something the franchise would never do again, but it works so well here.

4

Silent Hill 2

Sixth Generation

Silent Hill 2

To this day, the leap from PS1 to PS2 is the most impressive graphical jump of all time to me. It felt like we had moved into the future overnight.

No game was more evident of that than Silent Hill 2. Even now, it’s a game that doesn’t seem possible to achieve.

The lifelike faces and dingy corridors of the Otherworld are just spectacular. It has some of the most consistent art direction in the entire Silent Hill franchise.

There was no survival horror game as good as this one during the sixth-generation of home consoles. There are a few, like Rule of Rose and Haunting Ground, that come close, but Silent Hill 2 is still in a class all its own.

3

The Last Of Us

Seventh Generation

Most Graphically Impressive Games Of The 2010s - The Last of Us

Of all the games on this list, I have replayed The Last of Us more than any of them by a mile. In spite of its dark, oppressive story, I find some unusual comfort in its discomfort.

There were a lot of excellent survival horror games during the seventh-generation. Dead Space and Condemned 2 spring to mind, but none of them even came close to The Last of Us.

The Last of Us Infected Runners Clickers And Rat King

From Runners to Rat King, a definitive ranking for all Infected from The Last of Us

The cross-country journey of Joel and Ellie to find a cure for humanity is one of the most harrowing survival horror adventures of all time. It’s filled with so many memorable moments and haunting encounters.

The way it makes survival feel like a genuine concern is still so impressive. Ammo scarcity feels far more genuine than other games in the genre, and Naughty Dog’s ability to create drama through that is impeccable.

2

Dying Light

Eighth Generation

hordes in dying light

During the long, painful wait for Dead Island 2, it was rather alarming to watch Techland abandon the sequel in favor of a completely new IP. It’s good to see developers freed of any sort of shackles, but I found myself a little wary of Dying Light.

The original Dead Island is one of my favorite games of all time. The prospect of Techland doing a completely new thing left me cautiously optimistic.

I was thankful to have my concerns laid to rest, as Dying Light became one of the best games of its generation, and the eighth-generation’s most outstanding survival horror experience.

The fear it creates when nightfall rolls around is still fabulous. It was different in a lot of ways from Dead Island, but retained all that game’s commitment to a fun survival experience.

1

Alan Wake 2

Ninth Generation

Best Horror Games On Every PlayStation Console Ranked Alan Wake 2

I found myself filled with excitement when Remedy’s Sam Lake described Alan Wake 2 as the studio’s first survival horror game. There were certainly elements of that in the first game, but the commitment to that in the sequel was just one of many reasons to be hyped.

After waiting so long, perhaps the scariest thing about Alan Wake 2 was that it would be a disappointment. Thankfully, it more than lived up to expectations.

The dual character story, intimidating enemies, outlandish plot – all of it is textbook for the genre. It ticks all the boxes and then some.

Alan Wake 2 may have taken some time to finally arrive, but the wait was worth every second. No survival horror experience this generation has even come close to this absolute masterpiece.

Octopath Traveler 0 review – Square Enix’s RPG forgets what makes the series special

Octopath Traveler 0 review – Square Enix’s RPG forgets what makes the series special

Considering how great 2025 has been for RPGs, finishing the year out with a new Octopath Traveler game feels like a cherry on the top of a giant sundae. Octopath Traveler 0 is a natural evolution of Square Enix’s critically acclaimed RPG series, combining its signature writing and challenging combat with a new town management wrinkle. It’s one last treat for genre fans in 2025, but one that doesn’t quite execute its most promising ideas.

Launching on Dec. 4 for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC, Octopath Traveler 0 adapts the story and combat of the mobile gacha game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent into a premium console RPG. Focused on the continent of Orsterra, where the first Octopath Traveler game took place, Octopath Traveler 0 plays like it was developed under the presumption that “more means better” and that the quality of its parts would make a great final experience. Far from hitting the spot, Octopath Traveler 0 ends up being a meaty RPG, but not necessarily a great Octopath Traveler game.

The story in Octopath Traveler 0 is structured around small narrative arcs that unfold into more intricate ones. You start pursuing one of three “Masters of” routes. They take you to different regions of the continent to see the different problems affecting the citizens of Orsterra. From social, political, to divine issues, there is a beautiful complexity in Orterra’s society.

After completing the three chapters of the initial arcs, a new storyline called “Master of All” (also divided into multiple chapters) begins. Just when you think it’s all heading to the climax, no, you’re wrong — there’s more to the story. Each arc is self-contained, but they’re connected by a macro plot involving magical rings. Even with a common narrative thread sewing them together, the sequencing of it all is offbeat. The overall experience plays like a musical piece conducted by someone who has no idea when the concert is actually ending, and it’s time for the orchestra to put down their instruments.

Octopath Traveler 0 comes with another significant change to the storytelling design that made the series known for. It abandons the traditional “eight-character” narrative structure to centralize the adventure around the mythologically cliché figure of the Chosen One. While following eight different routes didn’t necessarily turn the first two games into better RPGs, the “octopaths” gave them personality. This time, instead of playing the role of a common protagonist of epic stories, Octopath Traveler 0 puts us in the shoes of a unique individual who’s only an observer. Your character, which you customize, does have a background story, but it is leagues away from what the rest of the series offers in terms of quality and depth.

Although it has problems, Octopath Traveler 0 can still tell good stories. Individually, each arc presents memorable characters, like the head of a small mafia family, Bargello. They are RPG heroes, but as grounded as they can be, there’s no room for idealized heroism in their stories. They choose to make the world better, because, to some extent, they have been hurt by it. The villains are the real stars in most arcs. They are introduced as flat, evil characters, but as the narratives develop, we learn the depth. Like other citizens of Orsterra, the three initial villains were regular people, but they eventually changed due to the cruelty of the world they lived in.

While short, the companion missions introduce new, as well as fan-favorite, characters with stories that highlight their personalities and traits. Alfyn, the apothecary, has you helping him to prepare a potion for his mom, while Celsus, a sexy priest bodyguard, is introduced by throwing knives at those disturbing the tavern he’s been working on. They have strong identities, making every interaction a treat, whether they are discussing private topics or just fooling around. As we recruit more companions and complete the arcs, the story of Orsterra is told by those who matter: the people who live in it.

Octopath Traveler 0 loses the sparkle that made the series special by adopting a single protagonist, a decision that might have worked for Champions of the Continent, but turn Octopath Traveler 0 into an ordinary RPG by comparison.

The game still wears the series’ foundations on its sleeves. Tension can be found in combat, although a modification has been inherited from the mobile game there too. The turn-based battle system is, along with the narrative structure and visuals, a signature feature of the Octopath Traveler series. The goal stays the same in Octopath Traveler 0: Discovering and exploiting an enemy’s weaknesses to break their defenses, preventing them from acting. Doing so right when a boss is about to unleash their ultimate attack is fulfilling, and it is capable of making every turn feel tense.

To sprinkle a layer of novelty over the experience, Octopath Traveler 0 increases the number of party members you can bring into a battle up from four to eight, allowing you to put together a small battalion to fight whatever comes your way. The possible party compositions are endless, and there’s a bit of safety that comes with having four extra characters. Individually, characters’ skillsets were designed to represent their identities and unique fighting styles and allow for a wide range of strategies. There are characters focused on elemental damage, buffing the party, reducing the enemies’ stats, and so on.

The addition of four characters is hardly justifiable in the game’s design. There are no “all-out attacks” or any kind of special abilities that would invite us to consider which characters to use in the party. Fights haven’t become more complex or presented new mechanics that would require additional characters to be resolved, either. While it’s a nice touch to allow players to have individuals representing the different regions in Orsterra, Octopath Traveler 0’s eight-character party existence boils down to the game’s gacha DNA rather than to the actual battle design in this version of the game.

An Octopath Traveler 0 screenshot showing the little farm you have in the game
Image: DokiDoki Groove Works/Square Enix via Polygon

While the narrative and combat are adapted from Champions of the Continent, Octopath Traveler 0 brings a completely new feature too: a town management system, which is a highlight. Tied to a particular questline, this system leads you through the mission of rebuilding your character’s hometown, Wishvale. For that, you need not only to find new citizens to populate the place, but also to help those who have left to find their way back home. The rebuilding of Wishvale is a tale about people’s capacity to find force in community, to persevere after hardships. As it lays the ground for the new town to bloom, the story doesn’t shy away from the past. Most quests force the character to face the reality and the pain of losing their loved ones.

When it comes to actually building the city, there is a good variety of cosmetic options to choose from and decorate the town, although the system and its building mechanics are limited. You must build houses for citizens to live in and activate their skills. There are crops to take care of, a small farm to fill with new animals, and a store to supply with products from all the places you visit during the game. You can’t, however, remodel the space by changing the terrain, creating ramps, a lake, or any structural modification at this level. Rotating buildings is not a possibility, and the farming elements are too simple compared to other RPG-farming series like Rune Factory. Even so, watching my Wishvale grow, placing tables and characters around it, and imagining the kind of conversations they would have had led me to spend more time making the place feel cozy than I expected I would.

An Octopath Traveler 0 screenshot showing two characters and the sunset on the horizon
Image: DokiDoki Groove Works/Square Enix via Polygon

When taking its narrative, combat, and town management separately, Octopath Traveler 0 can make for a perfectly enjoyable RPG experience. But when you consider how all of those elements come together to form a whole, the cracks become more explicit. Below the dysfunctional amalgamation of a questionably transposed narrative structure, an unjustifiably large group of characters, and an underused town-management system, there’s still RPG gold to be mined.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Hardcover Book Is 25% Off

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Hardcover Book Is 25% Off

Whether he’s crafting beloved dark fantasy movies like Pan’s Labyrinth or directing sci-fi masterpieces like Pacific Rim, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s work is immediately recognizable for its vivid visual direction. No other films look quite like del Toro’s, and if you’ve ever wanted to take a peek inside his process, then you’ll want to grab the reissue of Guillermo del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities – My Notebooks, Collections, and Other Obsessions. This new edition of the book launched back in October, but is now discounted to $45 (was $60) for a limited time at Amazon. This could make for the perfect holiday gift for the del Toro fan in your life–just make sure you snag a copy while Amazon’s discount is still available.

While this deal is for the new 2025 edition of Cabinet of Curiosities, the original 2013 edition is also still available at Amazon for $64. While the books are essentially identical in content, the older book might be a little worse for wear after spending 12 years in an Amazon warehouse. We’d only recommend grabbing this version if the 2025 edition sells out, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

Del Toro’s latest project is Frankenstein, a Netflix film adaptation of the classic Mary Shelley story about Victor Frankenstein and his monstrous creation. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Oscar Isaac as the infamous doctor and Jacob Elordi as his resurrected creation. While the movie is available to stream on Netflix, you can also dive into the creation of the film with Frankenstein: Written and Directed by Guillermo del Toro, available for $75. There’s also Frankenstein: The Complete Screenplay, which includes the film’s script alongside concept art and set photography. It’s on sale for $21 (was $30) at Amazon.

You can also pick up several of del Toro’s books, ranging from fiction to deep dives into the making of his movies. His work on the Strain trilogy alongside co-author Chuck Hogan was particularly well-received, as it put a modern spin on vampire mythos. The books were eventually adapted into a 46-episode TV series that ran from 2014-2017. Check the list below for a selection of more books written by del Toro.

More Guillermo del Toro Books

Of course, no story talking about del Toro’s influences on his movies would be complete without actually mentioning them. The entire filmography of the acclaimed director has been brought to Blu-ray over the years, and you can even pick up Criterion Collection versions of several of his films. These are designed to be the definitive editions of his films, as each restoration has been supervised directly by him. The newest release in this line, Nightmare Alley, is a neo-noir mystery starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, and Rooney Mara comes with a ton of extra content, including a new 159-minute black-and-white extended director’s cut that del Toro helped develop. We’ve rounded up several more del Toro films available on Blu-ray below.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Adds Mewtwo In Free Update

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Adds Mewtwo In Free Update

As we get closer to Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Mega Dimension DLC next Wednesday, December 10, Game Freak is adding another missing monster and Mega Evolution to the RPG’s roster. Thankfully, you won’t have to buy the $30 DLC to get this one, as Mewtwo and its two Mega Evolutions are coming to Legends: Z-A as a free Mystery Gift side mission.

Mewtwo and its Mega Stones are available now in Legends: Z-A, and they’re totally free. To capture this Legendary Pokémon, you’ll have to download a new side quest through the game’s Mystery Gift feature. Open up the Link Play option in the pause menu, then click on Mystery Gift, and then the “Get via Internet” option. Here, you’ll find a new side quest called “Project M,” which will add the psychic legend to the game.

With this addition, Legends: Z-A is one step closer to hopefully adding every Mega Evolution-capable Pokémon to the roster with Mega Dimension. As of right now, the base game has just about all of them, with around a dozen or so still missing in action. Most of these are legendary Pokémon like Mewtwo, Latios, Latias, and Rayquaza, but a few of the old starters like Blaziken, Sceptile, and Swampert are also missing in action.

Mega Dimension is also introducing several new Mega Evolutions that weren’t in the base game, including Mega Raichu X and Y. Also today, Game Freak announced Mega Lucario Z, a new form for Lucario, who previously had a Mega Evolution prior to the DLC. So it sounds like even some Pokémon who already had these superpowered transformations might be getting more. Outside of new Megas, the DLC is also introducing a roguelike mode that will break the series’ long-established level 100 level cap.

Battlefield Labs is coming back for a short session to test out next week’s Battlefield 6 update, and you can expect more tests in the future, too

Battlefield Labs is coming back for a short session to test out next week’s Battlefield 6 update, and you can expect more tests in the future, too

Battlefield Studios is seemingly trying something different with Battlefield 6’s next patch, which everyone assumed would be a standard, mid-season update not intended to change the game significantly.

However, it appears that it may bring more to the game than we realised, enough that the developer sees it as an excuse to bring back the pre-launch Battlefield Labs testing initiative.

Manage cookie settings

The December 9 patch kicks off the final phase of the game’s first season, which is set to take the game through the holidays and into the new year. We’ve known about its content for a while, and it’s definitely the lightest, compared to the two previous phases.

Battlefield Studios announced a host of new changes that will be included in the same patch, which are apparently significant enough to require player testing. The developer is reviving Battlefield Labs to help it do so, but only for three two-hour sessions, split across the game’s three main server regions (EU, NA, APAC).

All tests are scheduled for today, December 2, and they remain under NDA. Battlefield Labs is also sticking with PC as its chosen platform yet again, though you will be able to join through Steam this time, alongside the EA app.

The focus of the test will be on three key areas that the December 9 patch will be touching. First, there’s footstep audio, an issue that was really brought into focus with the launch of Redsec Battle Royale. You can expect to hear enemy footsteps from farther away, and intuitively know the type of surface they’re moving on.

The patch also brings another pass to hit registration and netcode, which BF Studios says should improve responsiveness in close-quarter situations. Finally, there are broader changes to other combat areas that the announcement didn’t elaborate on.

All testing will take place on Eastwood, and Operation Firestorm, rotating between Conquest, and Escalation.

Going forward, Battlefield Studios said to expect Labs to be open to more players, and for the process itself to be smoother. The developer wants to have faster turnaround times, after all, so that the initiative can test smaller changes and be more responsive to player feedback.

Some of the more involved, future sessions will include experiments with map layout changes and various other non-standard compositions of player and vehicle numbers. Of course, you can also expect new maps and modes to be tested in Labs, similar to how the CTE was used in Battlefield 4’s long life.

There Will Be More Hitman Games, Confirms IO Interactive

Hitman 3, or as it’s now known, Hitman: World of Assassination, is absolutely awesome. And given how many copies have been sold (25 million across the new trilogy) I think we all understood Hitman wasn’t dead. But now we have official confirmation from IO Interactive.

IO Interactive is quite busy right now, pouring all their time and effort into 007 First Light, which is currently expected to launch in March, 2026. They’ve also got something called Project Fantasy in development, alongside a co-op mode for Hitman: World of Assassination.

In an interview with Variety, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak discussed the topic of Hitman and the franchise’s future.

“So of course there will be more ‘Hitman,’” he said. “But right now, I think we need to get to the other side of this year and next year you’ll get more news about ‘Hitman’ co-op”.

But when might we hear of the next Hitman?

Abrak confirms that they will, “be talking about the next ‘Hitman” after that. It’s unclear if that means the company will begin discussing the next game internally or if it will be a public reveal, but either way, the maths points toward 2028.

Abrak also talks about the ongoing success of Hitman: World of Assassination.

“We have had more than 85 million gamers play it, and we have north of 25 million copies sold,” he said. “Every month, we have more than a million people playing ‘Hitman’ consistently. That’s pretty amazing after all these years.”

Personally, I freaking adore Hitman and can’t wait to see Agent 47 return.

The Fortnite x South Park collaboration might come sooner than we expect it. The long-awaited partnership was leaked ahead of Chapter 7 release, and we just received more details about it. According to a new leak, Epic Games will add Kenny, one of the most popular characters from the animated show, as a gameplay element.

Considering how many players have asked for the South Park collaboration, it’s nice to see that Epic is working on it. Now, let’s dig into some details and see how exactly Kenny will be added to Fortnite.

The Fortnite x South Park collaboration will be massive

When the South Park partnership was first leaked, many players were excited to hear about it. While the community expected characters from the show to come as skins, it appears that the collaboration will be much bigger. According to Shiina, a veteran leaker, Kenny will be included in a new Rift Anomaly. Interestingly, this anomaly will be strongly tied to his character in the show.

If you get eliminated during this anomaly, you won’t die. Instead, you will simply respawn and get a second chance, just like Kenny has done so many times.

A Fortnite leak claims that a collaboration with South Park is “coming very soon” after Epic Games’ upcoming crossover with The Simpsons.
The South Park collaboration could bring many fantastic skins to Fortnite. Image by VideoGamer

Unfortunately, the leaker hasn’t revealed any other details about the collaboration. Its release date might be around the corner, since it’s apparent that Epic Games has prepared numerous new partnerships to release in Chapter 7.

The first major update of the new chapter will drop on December 11 and will be the last update of 2025. The biggest addition will certainly be the upcoming event, as one of the new Winterfest skins has already been leaked. However, Epic may also add the South Park collab with the next update, finishing the year on a high note.
