Steam Frame and Steam Machine will be another good boost for Flatpaks and desktop Linux overall too

With the Steam Frame and Steam Machine launching with SteamOS Linux this year, we’re going to again see a nice boost for Flatpaks and desktop Linux overall.

Linux has, historically, been quite messy when it comes to software distribution. We have various distribution-specific packaging formats like .deb (Debian / Ubuntu), .rpm (Fedora) and the list just goes on and on. Canonical also went their own way with Ubuntu for the likes of Snap, but the real winner is going to end up being Flatpak and the main Flathub store.

Thanks to the Steam Deck releasing, Valve kept Flatpaks with Flathub as the way to grab extra software in the full KDE Plasma desktop mode. That was already a nice big boost, and soon we’re going to see the same again with the likes of the new Steam Frame and Steam Machine.

UploadVR have a very nice article up that’s worth a read as they were one of the few invited to actually try out the Steam Frame. Their excitement over it, and about learning about Flatpaks, and how they’re going to load up their Steam Frame with lots of things has seriously rubbed off onto me too now. As both the Steam Frame and Steam Machine will have that same full KDE Plasma desktop mode that the Steam Deck has, and again for some this may very well be their first introduction to Linux and gaming together.

I really can’t wait to see more people discover Linux thanks to new devices coming with SteamOS, and for hopefully more developers to get their apps up on the likes of Flathub – because then everyone on Linux will benefit from easier access and easier updates.

If you take a look at Flathub’s own 2025 year in review, it shows some impressive stats too with 438.2M downloads. However, something to keep in mind is not everything on Flathub supports Arm, we’ll probably end up seeing more software get updated to support both x86_64 and ARM64. You can see what packages support when you scroll down on a Flathub app page as it will note something like:

We’ve seen how the Steam Deck has pushed more people to try Linux on other devices too, and I expect that only to continue after the release of Valve’s new hardware.

Valve’s support of open source and having a more open platform continues to be amazing and it shows with the Linux user share on Steam once again hitting an all-time high.

Avowed Coming To PlayStation 5 In February, Along With Big Update

Colour me surprised and call me Barney, Avowed has been announced for PS5. In fact, it’s coming pretty soon.

Announced in a short video interview at the New Game+ 2026 showcase, a new yearly event, Avowed will launch in February 17th on PS5 and PS5 Pro, around a year after it first launched on Xbox and PC.

Since it has been a year, the PS5 version will come with all the updates that Obsidian have put out, like reworked Ranger and Fighter skill trees, a better UI and more.

But that’s not all, because a major update will also be launched alongside the PS5 release for all versions of the game, adding in new features such as New Game+, the ability to play as non-human characters such as a hulking Amauan or a furry little Orlan. A 3rd person view is also being added into the mix.

Avowed landed with a muted thud a year ago. Initial reviews were lukewarm and people seemed ambivalent to its existence. I played a good chunk of it via Game Pass and thought it was decent before other things dragged me away, and I always meant to go back. A PS5 release should provide a good excuse to do that, and I’m intrigued by the new features, although I don’t think they’ll be able to combat the game’s core flaws – characters and story.

How to Get Stator Blueprint in StarRupture

StarRupture is a great survival game where you’re tasked with creating a working factory system on the alien planet Arcadia-7. It can be a pretty monumental task, especially when you’re starting.

After getting your base all figured out and getting the basics of survival down, you’ll want to start exploring for blueprints. You’ll want to start with the Rotor and Tube Blueprints, as those will be needed first.

If you’ve gotten to the point where you need the Stator, you shouldn’t have too much trouble grabbing it with everything you have unlocked. This guide will show you where to find the Stator and what you’ll need to finish the recipe for it.

Where to Find the Stator Blueprint

Once you’ve unlocked the map, you can make your way almost directly north to a broken-down facility sitting on a ridge. Here you’ll find the container with the blueprint you’re after.

While you’re on the way there, you may want to stop and grab any of the dead bodies you find, along with anything else you may want to do. Once you get there, you should be prepared for a fight, so only go after this if you’ve got a good handle on your weaponry.

Finding the Container

This container is housed in the raised building that you can’t get into from the western side. You’ll need to go inside the other building by jumping into the building from the opening on the north side.

From there, you can just jump across to the other room, and you’ll be in the room with the container. On the left side of the building, you can find the container you need and snag the blueprints there.

There are many other containers to explore, allowing you to grab anything not nailed down. There are also a few dead bodies around the area, which make for a great source of War Bonds.

Barely 24 hours after Magic: The Gathering’s newest Commander decks were revealed as part of the upcoming Lorwyn Eclipsed set, one extremely powerful card is already getting a slight downgrade. Ashling the Flamekin has been a popular character since the days of the original Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block, so it makes sense she’d headline one of the new set’s two Commander decks. Dance of the Elements is a five-color preconstructed deck that’s all about casting elementals for cheaper and capitalizing on their Enter the Battlefield (ETB) triggers. Ashling, the Limitless has two abilities that interact exclusively with her fellow elementals — just a little too much.

Her first ability gives all elemental spells you cast from your hand evoke 4, meaning you can pay four colorless mana to cast an elemental, and then it’s sacrificed after it hits the board. Then, whenever you sacrifice a nontoken elemental, you can create a copy of it with haste. You then sacrifice that copy at the end of the turn unless you pay one of each mana, for a total of five. The strategy here is to double up on the ETB and sacrifice bonuses of your other elemental creatures, but as some Magic players quickly noticed, Ashling is actually even more powerful than that — at least the way the card is currently phrased.

Ashling, the Limitless leads one of the best Commander decks that Wizards of the Coast has designed in quite some time.

The issue is that the kindred mechanic has returned in Lorwyn Eclipsed, giving creature types to certain noncreature cards. In other words, the set includes non-creature spells that are technically still elementals. That makes it theoretically possible to cast a kindred instant that’s also an elemental with Ashling’s evoke. But what exactly would happen? Instants don’t technically “enter” the battlefield, so they can’t be sacrificed. Therefore, Ashling’s second ability wouldn’t trigger. What gets tricky is that official rules for evoke do specify that the card in question has to be a permanent, essentially implying that it has to be a creature. But I’m sure at plenty of casual tables, players might think you’d be able to cast an instant with kindred and elemental on it and then copy that spell, which would theoretically lead to some pretty devastating combos.

Replying to a post on Bluesky asking about this specific interaction, Wizards of the Coast principal editor Matt Tabak confirmed that “Ashling is getting an update to its wording to function only with Elemental permanent spells.” So before the set’s even been released, the face card for a preconstructed Commander deck is getting errata (official changes to text on cards in Magic-speak).

As a mechanic, evoke has always been tied specifically to permanents because it only meaningfully resolves once that permanent lands on the battlefield and is sacrificed at the end of the turn. That’s been the case with every evoke card since Lorwyn first introduced the mechanic in 2007. This new situation highlights one of the reasons why Wizards of the Coast’s Research & Design team stopped using kindred (formerly called tribal) altogether. 2010’s Rise of the Eldrazi was the last standard-legal set to feature the mechanic — until now. When asked about kindred on his blog in the past, Magic head designer Mark Rosewater called it “horribly inconsistent” and “problematic everywhere” because it results in a “lot of extra words with very little use.” Turns out he was right.

Xbox Developer Direct Announced For January 22nd, Featuring Forza And Fable

Xbox will be holding its next biggish event on January 22nd 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT, the company has announced.

This year’s Xbox Developer Direct places the focuses firmly on Playground games who will be showcasing not one but two of their upcoming titles: Forza Horizon 6 and Fable. Both games are currently down for a 2026 release, as Phil Spencer himself teased, and their presence at this showcase hopefully indicates that they are on track.

According to Xbox, the first look at Forza Horizon 6‘s gameplay will be show, alongside a glimpse of some new features.

Likewise, we are promised “a first look at some stunning new gameplay” for Fable. Personally, I’m just hoping it shows something more…well, Fable. So far what we’ve seen is sorely lacking in the classic British humour, good/evil morality and fun life-sim elements.

The third announced game is Beast of Reincarnation which was announced at last year’s developer direct. This is a third-party game coming from Game Freak, the company most known for Pokemon. It has already been announced as a Game Pass day one title.

“Presented by the game creators themselves, Developer_Direct will once again give you an inside look at not just the games, but the studios working to bring them to life. Fittingly for Xbox’s 25th anniversary year, that includes the return of some of our most legendary franchises, which rub shoulders with a brand new title from one of Japan’s most beloved studios,” says the official blurb.

Of course, there’s always room for a few extra surprises along the way.

Plus, non-Xbox players should also tune in because these days every Xbox exclusive is highly likely to come to PlayStation and maybe even Switch. Forza Horizon 6 has already been officially confirmed as coming to PlayStation sometime after it Xbox and PC release, and Fable is likely to make the journey at some point, too.

NVIDIA is wrapping up a big week at the CES trade show with a set of GeForce NOW announcements that are bringing more ways to play and more games to the cloud.

From new native apps for Linux and Amazon Fire TV streaming sticks to hands-on throttle-and-stick (HOTAS) support for simulation fans and a new single sign-on option, GeForce NOW is expanding across devices and making it easier to jump straight into gameplay.

Topping it off, a new wave of AAA titles — including IO Interactive’s 007 First Light, Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem and Pearl Abyss’ Crimson Desert — is gearing up to join the GeForce NOW library for high-fidelity, low-latency streaming across the globe.

Get ready with the six new games available to stream this week.

Leveling Up Where Gamers Play

The family of GeForce NOW supported devices is growing.

A new native GeForce NOW app is launching in beta for Linux, starting with Ubuntu 24.04 and later. This answers a long-standing request from the gaming community, turning compatible systems into RTX-powered gaming rigs that can stream at up to 5K resolution and 120 frames per second (fps) or 1080p 360 fps. With rendering handled in the cloud, Linux gamers can tap into ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS and other RTX features without needing a local, high-end GPU.

Amazon Fire TV stick with GFN — Things are heating up: GeForce NOW on Fire TV streaming sticks.

A new native app for Amazon Fire TV streaming sticks transforms the tiny device into a big-screen cloud gaming endpoint, giving members another way to stream their PC libraries straight to the TV with a gamepad in hand. It builds on existing device support, making it easier for gamers to pick up and play from the couch without a console or gaming PC attached.

Clearer Skies Ahead

GFN flight controls — Cleared for takeoff in the cloud.

Flight control support has landed in the cloud, letting virtual pilots connect their favorite gear — including industry-leading Thrustmaster and Logitech setups — to custom HOTAS configurations. Whether locking in a full desktop throttle-and-stick rig or fine-tuning a split cockpit arrangement, everything’s ready for takeoff.

Paired with the incredible RTX 5080-powered performance available to Ultimate members, plus ultralow-latency streaming and NVIDIA Reflex in supported titles, pilots can now enjoy ultra-precise, hyper-immersive flight experiences straight from the cloud. Soaring over detailed landscapes in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, dogfighting in War Thunder or exploring the stars in Elite Dangerous has never felt smoother.

Easier Sign-Ins, Faster Game Time

GeForce NOW now supports new games — and more ways to get into them faster.

Gaijin SSO on GeForce NOW — Because remembering passwords is so last season.

Battle.net single sign-on recently joined the service, letting members jump straight into supported titles without juggling extra credentials each time. And coming soon early this year, Gaijin.net integration will make takeoff even smoother — one simple sign-on connects more game libraries across devices.

Fewer passwords and pop-ups mean more time playing — whether on a desktop, laptop, handheld device or TV.

Next Up in the Cloud

A new wave of AAA titles is headed to GeForce NOW, bringing spies, survivors and freeswords to the cloud for members to stream across their favorite devices. The games each bring a distinct flavor — from stealthy espionage to nerve-shredding horror and gritty fantasy combat — and they’re all gearing up to join an already-stacked GeForce NOW library when they launch on PC.

IO Interactive’s 007 First Light brings a modern James Bond origin story to the cloud when the PC title launches May 27, inviting members to step into the shadows as Bond begins his journey. Experience a balanced mix of stealth and action built around a “breathing” gameplay loop with IOI’s cinematic, set-piece-driven storytelling. Approach encounters through stealth, direct action or creative improvisation, with multiple viable paths to each objective that let players define Bond’s style.

Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem continues the legendary survival-horror saga with a new chapter that doubles down on tense exploration, eerie environments and resource-tight combat. Expect dimly lit corridors, unsettling encounters and that classic feeling of weighing every bullet and healing item before moving forward when playing as Grace, and exhilarating, death-defying action when playing as Leon.

Active Matter on GeForce NOW — Everything matters in the cloud.

Gaijin Entertainment’s Active Matter, coming this year, is a realistic military shooter where players join dangerous raids for loot or intense player vs. player battles set in a fractured multiverse. Oddcore Is A Trippy, Fun, And Very Good Backrooms FPS

Liminal spaces and the “backrooms” have become overused concepts on the internet, with people labeling any room or area that is even slightly off as some creepy space. It’s annoying and tiring. But I still like the idea of eerie, dead areas hidden in our world in places like forgotten hallways and empty hotel rooms. I also like fast-paced boomer shooters that feel great. So I’m a big fan of the newly released indie FPS Oddcore, which mashes all of this stuff up into one stylish game.

Out now on Steam via early access, Oddcore doesn’t have much setup. One moment you’re hanging out in a room in your house, watching TV, before you suddenly clip through reality and enter a strange multidimensional hubworld called Oddcore that acts as a demented spin on a theme park. Sort of. It’s all very, well, dare I say…odd! Though it’s unclear why you’ve ended up here or what “here” even means, it doesn’t really matter much once you get past the tutorial. All that matters is lasting as long as you can as you hop between different liminal spaces and strange dimensions, killing all the bizarre monsters you encounter along the way with guns, swords, special abilities, and much, much more.

What kind of game is Oddcore?

The basic loop in Oddcore involves you hopping into a space and then completing an objective. It might be to kill 10 enemies. Or collect seven strange items. Or to survive a corruption ambush that sends deadly giant faces at you. You know, the usual stuff. Survive, and you hop to a new place and repeat. Killing enemies earns you souls, which can be spent to extend how much time you have before your run ends or to heal you via shooting your own feet. Between every few worlds, there are vending machines that let you upgrade your gear or abilities, and random boxes that contain power-ups and other useful specials.

Survive long enough, and you’ll earn tokens which can be spent in various ways. I spent most of mine at a slot machine inside a large arcade in the hub world. That slot machine spit out tickets if I got lucky, and I could use those to buy other pieces of gear. There’s actually a lot going on in Oddcore, and after just an hour or so of playing, I could feel it start to pull me into its web. I wanted to do just one more run…earn just a few more tokens…play just a little bit more.

It also helps that Oddcore has primo aesthetics. It’s got that retro boomer shooter look I’ve come to expect from these kinds of games in 2026, but augments that with monsters and locations that seem out of place. I recommend turning on the VHS filter as it covers all of the strange art and retro visuals in cozy scanlines that add to the experience. But even without the VHS filter, Oddcore is a damn fine indie shooter that will hopefully only get bigger and better as it makes its way through early access.

Continue along the path ahead, and you will spot the Arendelle Castle on the right. Go behind the castle to spot a picnic blanket on the ground. The Festive Cocoa Bean spawns around the picnic blanket on the ground. Only 5 Festive Cocoa Beans spawn at a time. Moreover, it takes about 5 minutes for each Festive Cocoa Bean to spawn.

Use of Festive Cocoa Bean for Puzzles

The Festive Cocoa Bean is necessary for completing two puzzles, for now, including Frosty Rabbit and Winter Chocolate Fountain. The Frosty Rabbit puzzle requires players to feed four Festive Hot Cocoa of the day to a Frosty Rabbit critter, one every day. You must feed the correct Hot Cocoa of the day to the rabbit for it to drop a memory.

The Winter Chocolate Fountain puzzle requires the players to place Hot Cocoa meals in the empty fountain. 15x Festive Blueberry Hot Cocoa, 10x Festive Cherry Hot Cocoa, and 20x Festive Mint Hot Cocoa. All three of these Hot Cocoa Meals require Festive Cocoa Bean to make. It means you will have to gather 45 Festive Cocoa Beans in total to cook all three different Hot Cocoa Meals and place them in the empty fountain to complete the puzzle.

A Fruit-Switching Puzzle Game That Needs More Flavour

You can play a fun game of ‘guess the ability’ with Sintropia Fruits Together. Each of the three fruits in the game – banana, grape and apple – have a strength that makes them different from the others. Imagine Lost Vikings and you are mostly there, as this is a platformer at heart.

Jotted your answers? Well, the banana can float on updrafts. It’s unpeeled a little at the top and fashioned the frayed ends into a helicopter – a helicopter of its own skin (shiver). You should worry if you got that one correct.

The grape is small. Small means that it can sidle into tiny gaps. You may have got that one right. Sintropia Fruits Together also says that it can jump higher than the other fruits, but it seemed to be the same across the board from our experience.

The apple? It’s the ‘all-rounder’, which is a polite way of saying that it can’t float, can’t squeeze into small gaps, and has no distinguishing features. We’re going to use that phrase if our children don’t excel in something. You’re an ‘all-rounder’.

Sintropia Fruits Together review 1 — A fruit-fuelled adventure

A Puzzle Game That’s A Bit Of An All-Rounder

These three fruits are your companions for Sintropia Fruits Together. It’s a 2D platformer where the aim is to reach some kitchen scales, presumably to be weighed and eaten. In a large proportion of levels, that means working together: you need to switch between characters to navigate platforms, fans and tunnels, with the aim of positioning every last fruit on the scales.

Collectible stars are ensconced in the level as pick-ups. They tempt you into additional feats, as they’re often too high for some characters, or dangling over a precipice. Achievements give you a reason to pursue them. There’s 2000G on offer for full completion, which won’t take you more than an hour.

I grew up on Lost Vikings, so I was immediately onboard with Sintropia Fruits Together. I love a platformer where the slider moves away from twitchy, precise platforming and more towards puzzling. They’re not all that common, as both platforming and puzzle games have had a dip in popularity in recent times.

Sintropia Fruits Together brushed up against the itch rather than scratching it. That’s largely in part to a half-hearted commitment to the three different characters. You only get more than one character to tinker with at the halfway point, which was a little too late for me. Up to that point, Sintropia Fruits Together is a relatively generic puzzle-platformer, and it needed an extra something to give it substance. We get that the characters need to be tutorialised individually, but we didn’t need our hands to be in kid gloves for that long.

The Switcheroo

When character-switching does finally come in, it’s a little meek. The characters aren’t especially different from each other. Sure, the banana can float on updrafts created by fans, but the other two needed better identities. We wanted each character to feel fundamentally different to control.

The chosen abilities are also a little on the nose. Who are you going to choose to pass through the tiny tunnel? Well, the grape of course. It’s less Lost Vikings and more LEGO games circa 2015, as you hit upon a door that can only be opened by another character. So you switch and move on. There’s no problem-solving in that approach. The puzzles are self-evident.

What is left is some lukewarm puzzles and platforming. Some of the leaps are a little taxing, and a couple of the later levels have you scratching your head around which fruit to use in which order. There are only a few permutations, so the levels don’t take too long to solve, but it’s possible to burble out a curse-word and retry the level because you’ve made a mistake.

On occasions, the mistakes aren’t your fault. Sintropia Fruits Together is hard to read, with some platforms looking like background art, and vice versa. There are switches that stay pressed, and some that don’t, but they all look the same. A legibility pass would have helped here.

Misplaced Expectations

Perhaps it was my fault for imagining that Sintropia Fruits Together was something that it was not. I’d put up some ‘Welcome home, Lost Vikings!’ banners and set my expectations in the wrong place. But I do think I have some justification. If character-switching is what sets your game apart, then you should probably embrace it. But the characters overlap too greatly; the puzzles don’t leave you guessing about which character to use.

And where is the co-op? A team-based platformer cries out for multiplayer, but Sintropia Fruits Together’s budget can’t quite cover it.

Sintropia Fruits Together review 3 — Crush a grape!

Fruity!

There is very little that is offensive about Sintropia Fruits Together, and it refreshes for an hour or so. But we had such high hopes for it, with the promise of character-switching and puzzles that derived from that mechanic. But the characters are much-of-a-muchness and the puzzles don’t leverage their differences at all.

As a puzzle-platformer, Sintropia Fruits Together is a mid-tier fruit. A pear, maybe. But it could have been a top-tier fruit. With a little extra spark, it could have been a strawberry.
