Hermes Birkin Vs Hermes Kelly: Know The Difference

Hermes Birkin Vs Hermes Kelly: Know The Difference

August 22, 2025

There are very few luxury handbag names that have the prestige, desirability, and timelessness as Hermès. The brand has ferreted out two handbags that have transcended trends and culture: the Birkin and the Kelly, for any luxury handbag in circulation. Both bags are made by hand, by skilled artisans and can take anywhere from 20-40 hours to make one bag, depending on the requirements. For customers, the exclusivity, price points, and wait lists add to the appeal. But for many handbag lovers and first time Hermès buyers, the question is always, Hermes Birkin vs Hermes Kelly. Which bag should you buy?

While the Birkin and Kelly bags share the same brand DNA and craftsmanship, there are differences between the Birkin and Kelly that are attributed to history, design, practicality, and even personality. This guide will address everything you need to know about the two iconic bags, so you can make an informed (and fashionable) decision for yourself.

The Origin Stories

The Birth of the Birkin and Kelly

The Birth of the Kelly

The Kelly bag originally predates the Birkin bag by a few decades. The Kelly bag was first brought into production in the 1930s by Hermès, chief designer Robert Dumas, who created the bag as the Sac à Dépêches and was designed to be an elegant and functional bag capable of holding documents. The Kelly bag was rebranded in 1956 when Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco used her Kelly bag to obscure her pregnancy from the relentless lens of paparazzi cameras. That fleeting moment was documented in Life magazine, and they rebranded the bag as “Kelly” in her honor.

The Kelly rapidly became a symbol of refined femininity, often associated with royalty, elegance, and a certain Parisian chic.

The Birth of the Birkin

The Birkin has a more casual and serendipitous origin. In 1984, British actress and singer Jane Birkin was sitting next to Hermès’ CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a short flight from Paris to London. She said she couldn’t find a stylish, but practical bag for daily use. Dumas sketched out the design of what would become the Birkin on an airplane sick bag. What he designed was a tote-style handbag that manages size with effortlessness and sophistication.

While the Kelly has sureness and set up, the Birkin was born from sprawling luxury.

Design and Structure: Side-by-Side Comparison

Design and Structure- Side-by-Side Comparison

Although both arms bags share Hermès’ signature trapezoid shape and precise craftsmanship, they are very different. Looking at the Birkin from the front, you see two handheld top handles meant to be held by hand or over the arm. The bag opens from the top, and can be closed by flap and a turn-lock clasp. The bag can be allowed to remain open at the top for easy access. The overall design is slightly more relaxed, and may soften or deepen in character over time based on the leather, and therefore it is indeed more a casual charm.

The Kelly is much more formal, as it does have a top handle format with a detachable crossbody shoulder strap. The Kelly flap entirely covers the opening and secures with the same turn-lock as the Birkin; but, its design offers a more formal and sure fit with closure than the Birkin. The Kelly is also a bag designed with a shape to maintain its form even if used for several years, or just hanging in a closet or under an arm, with a professional feel to it on the body, and with its structure, a polished and sophisticated look. The Kelly is in short meant for formal timings, class, or a more or less “formal” experience; the Birkin is casual and an easy fit.

Size and Capacity

Size and Capacity

Both bags are available in various sizes with a good range of use.

Birkin Sizes

25 cm – small whereas it is evening appropriate30 cm – a casual day bag available day and night35 cm – a great bag for work and travel40 cm – tote with no weight limit! Great for overnights

Kelly Sizes

20cm (Kelly Mini II) – elegant evening companion25 cm – tiny, but functional28 cm – daily elegant equation32 cm – professional35 cm – spacious, formal but capable

The Kelly’s structured shape limits capacity slightly compared to the Birkin, but it excels in keeping items organized.

Materials and Craftsmanship

Investment Value

Investment Value

From an investment perspective, Hermès Birkin vs Hermès Kelly, both bags have been considered “better than gold” when it comes to resale value. They increase in value over time for two primary reasons: the limited supply & high consumer demand.

Birkin resale value is generally between 80–120% of its retail price and rare editions, trending 2–3 times retail.Kelly resale value generally features a slight uptick in price over the Birkin due to being a more formal bag with more flexible wear.

Of course, some leather, color, or hardware combinations can greatly boost value, especially when the bag features neutral colors like black, gold or etoupe.

Price Comparison

hermes birkin vs hermes kelly - Price Comparison

By 2025, retail prices (varying by country and tax rates) will be something like:

Birkin 25 Togo leather: $10,400+Birkin 30 Togo leather: $11,800+Kelly 25 Epsom leather: $9,900+Kelly 28 Togo leather: $11,300+

Special orders and limited editions, especially in exotic skins (like crocodile or ostrich) can easily surpass the 50k mark – one of the highest selling Birkin’s ever sold at auction went for over $380k!

Availability and the “Hermès Game”

You can’t just walk into an Hermès store and purchase a Birkin or Kelly. They are notoriously unattainable because there is a “by offer” policy in place at hermès which states they will not sell you one without an established relationship with the sales associate at the Hermès boutique, particularly if you have not purchased other items before to establish a “presence” with the brand first. You have to play the ‘Hermès’ game.

An interesting note is that while both bags are notoriously hard to obtain, anecdotal reports have suggested that the Kelly is sometimes offered more readily to new customers than the Birkin.

Which One Should You Choose?

Which One Should You Choose- hermes birkin vs hermes kelly

The choice between the two will usually depend on your lifestyle and your personal tastes.

Choose the Birkin if:

You want a large everyday luxury bag.You want a relaxed but still strong fashion statement. You don’t mind carrying one by hand or on the crook of your arm.

Choose the Kelly if:

You want a closed, structured bag.You want the option to carry it crossbody or on your shoulder. You want something traditionally formal and appropriate for a special occasion.

The Cultural Impact

The Birkin and the Kelly bags are both designated fashion icons in pop culture.

Birkin: immortalized in the popular culture sensibility of television shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl; a signifier of wealth, power, and exclusivity.Kelly: associated with old Hollywood glamour, regal elegance, and understated modern sophistication.

Caring for Your Bag

Caring for Your Bag

Both bags must be properly cared for and given their value:

Please store in their dust bags when you are not using them.Don’t keep in direct sunlight or moisture.Don’t over-pack them to keep their shape.Consider using Hermès spa services at any Hermès boutique.

The Verdict: Hermès Birkin vs Hermès Kelly

The Verdict- hermes birkin vs hermes kelly

In the Hermès Birkin vs Hermès Kelly discussion, no one is wrong – it’s just what’s right for you. The Birkin exudes effortless, modern luxury meant for those who want to make a statement with a bag they can wear every day. The Kelly is more about refined classic luxury, perfect for formal events and timelessness.

Both are examples of superb craftsmanship, status symbols, and buy worthy investments that can be passed on for generations. Whether your heart is pulled to the easy-going vibe of the Birkin or the poised sophistication of the Kelly, having an experience – on one – is an extraordinary experience in itself and an example of patience, prestige, and love of true luxury.

The Emotional Factor: Personality in a Bag

Choosing between the Hermès Birkin and Hermès Kelly rarely comes down just to size, color, or shape – it can also be about what kind of personality you want to embody. The Birkin embodies easy, I am among the elite and security of character, you live a life where practicality and status will only ever somehow exist together. It also indicates that you are in total control over your life, when necessary. You look elegant with functionality, at last, enough comfort can be important too. You choose quality, on both accounts, and later hope within this piece holds quality of anything that allows any divine description of this kind. That brand or piece represents a level of confidence. By the opposite, then, Kelly emphasizes precision, poise, and seriousness – while elegant, muted and understated.

The Role of Occasion in the Hermès Birkin Vs Hermès Kelly Decision

When it comes down to choosing between these two bags, one of the easiest ways is to think about how you will use them. If you are someone whose day-to-day activities consist of work meetings, flights, and stylish brunches on the weekends; the Birkin’s easy-entry opening and capacity will suit your lifestyle better. The Birkin allows you to travel with your laptop, travel essentials, and would still have space for a little silk scarf or a makeup bag.

However, if your calendar is jam-packed with formal dinners, galas, charity events, weddings, and exclusive social events; the Kelly’s more structured shape and closure allow it to look a little dressier on you. The Kelly’s only downside is that it is not able to be worn crossbody, so if you want a chic bag that you can be hands-free while still looking elegant, the Kelly is the best choice.

The Collector’s Perspective

Ultimately, for seasoned handbag collectors, the Hermès Birkin vs Hermès Kelly debate is more about an entire portfolio of bags in both styles, in different shapes, sizes, colors and leathers. Most collectors always start with the first bag in the collection, a versatile neutral Birkin (such as Noir in Togo leather), and add the first Kelly bag in an eye-catching seasonal color (such as Rose Pourpre or Vert Vertigo). Some collectors also go so far as to seek out the rare “Sellier” Kelly, or exotic skin Birkins, solely as an investment collection, as well as sheer visual impact! Collecting can take years, especially since Hermès is not known for fulfilling your exact specifications on your first try, making the hunt that much more fun from one enthusiast to the next!

Moschino vs Love Moschino: What’s the Difference?

Moschino vs Love Moschino: What’s the Difference?

August 21, 2025

Anyone who is involved with Italian luxury fashion knows Moschino; the brand is impossible to ignore with its fun, funky, and even sometimes silly designs. But the question many fashion lovers and shoppers have is, Moschino vs Love Moschino — what’s the difference?

While the two brands in the same fashion house opened under Franco Moschino in 1983, Moschino handbags and apparel are for different uses, price points, and audiences. Yet, knowing the differences between the two can save your shopping soul, whether you are investing in an expensive statement piece or want a more affordable take on a dash of Moschino angst. Here’s a little perspective while pondering Moschino versus Love Moschino.

1. The Brand Background

Simply put, Moschino is the brand’s flagship luxury line; it is the epitome of Italian haute couture and abstracts, and ironic and dare-to-cross-the-line designs of fashion that are showcased on runways and at haute couture, as well as limited availability collections that completely upend fashion as you know it.

Conversely, Love Moschino is the brand’s diffusion line aimed at a younger age market with a reasonable price point, yet still retailing the same fun Moschino DNA. It still has all the light hearted and eccentricity of the brand, but is way more casual and ready to wear to be part of your wardrobe of streetwear.

2. Target Audience

The target market is key to understanding the distinction between Moschino and Love Moschino.

Moschino aims for buyers with ever-more-burgeoning luxury budgets, and those hoping to build a loveable, collectible wardrobe perfected by fashion collectors, while collecting items for their unique designs, crafts-level quality, and outspoken presentations.Love Moschino has a younger, fashion-driven audience focused on timely and playful looks at an affordable price point – which is perfect for the customer who wants the Moschino look without the couture price tag.

3. Price Difference

Price is the most apparent disparity between Moschino and Love Moschino.

Moschino essentials, especially runway or even couture essentials may range from high hundreds to thousands of dollars. A Moschino blazer could cost upwards of $1,500, while a couture evening dress could be above $5,000.

Love Moschino pricing is obtainable by more customers to put some Moschino style in their wardrobes: T-shirts cost between $80-$150; handbags are in a range of roughly $150-$400; and outerwear varies from $300 to $700.

There is enough of a pricing gap that allows for Love Moschino to be a gateway collection for customers who may eventually buy into the Moschino mainline.

4. Design Aesthetic

Design Aesthetic

There are both Moschino and Love Moschino’s initiators who have their own eccentric, over-the-top personality that Moschino is known for, however, in different forms.

Moschino: avant garde high fashion and conceptual. Expect shapes and silhouettes to reflect exaggerated shapes and forms of expression seen at runway shows with visual story-telling statements. Couture quality pieces are made with quality above any other kind of fashion more times than not. Most pieces are a conversation piece that could include a variety of pop-art references and cultural references too.

Love Moschino is playful, versatile, and offers a more street-style scope. We’re talking graphic tees, casual dresses, denim, sneakers and those everyday bags sprinkled with fun.

5. Materials and Craftsmanship

Materials and Craftsmanship

When we think Moschino vs. Love Moschino, a really big factor involved is craftsmanship.

Moschino uses fine silk, wool, and premium leather. Many items are created in Italy and have very specific labour embedded in them, like hand embroidered details, original appliqués, etc.Love Moschino is considered a solid product, but going that extra mile with the types of materials used like cotton blends, faux leather, and synthetics, are just some examples of why they are able to keep their prices down for those who like them.

6. Availability

Moschino mainline pieces are more exclusive; they usually can only be found in luxury boutiques, Moschino’s flagship stores, and high-end department stores, like Harrods or Saks Fifth Avenue. Limited edition runway pieces, once sold, may only be available in a few specified areas, or through client special order.

Love Moschino is easier to hunt down as they can be found in premium department stores, multi-branded retailers, or online, like Farfetch, Net-a-Porter, Darveys, or even one of the large global e-commerce fashion sites. Provenance is an important factor here when we’re comparing the brand, because of course we can’t all look like a runway model, or tourist, but Moschino and Love Moschino really do transform basic clothes into well-styled looks.

7. Logo and Branding

logo and branding

Branding is another thing that can assist with the scheme:

Moschino is known for working in its logo or representation in a more subtle, or as part of a liberal design. The objective is to be the best artist in rags as opposed to being a branded designer.Love Moschino, is known for its prominent branding and depiction. The pieces are either literally embroidered or printed on the garment as a huge “LOVE MOSCHINO” somewhere on the garment, or represents the brand in some sort of embroidery or printed work.

8. Seasonal Collections

Moschino mainline adheres to the high-fashion calendar, meaning they showcase their collection at Milan Fashion Week with a Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter release period, plus special collaborations.

Love Moschino releases drop more frequently, for commercial ‘seasonal’ collections to be worn year-round rather than runway items.

9. Collaborations and Creative Direction

Through creative directors like Jeremy Scott, Moschino has done headline-making collaborations – so, think dresses inspired by McDonald’s, a collection inspired by Barbie, or capsule collections with H&M. Often these collaborations tie back to Moschino’s mainline, emphasizing Moschino’s theatricality.

Love Moschino collaborations tend to be more commercial – collaborations with a more accessible retailer or capsule collections with styles appropriate for your every day, street-ready wardrobe.

10. Investment Value

When it comes to investment, Moschino offers the most long-term value. Vintage Moschino runway pieces (especially pieces that were in his original era) are desirable, collectible, and can be valued far more than the retail price can.

Love Moschino pieces, though trendy and stylish, are designed for “day-to-day” wear, and though the value can appreciate they do not resell the same as Moschino line.

11. Real-Life Styling Examples

If you are still weighing Moschino versus Love Moschino, consider how you want to wear your pieces.

Moschino Mainline: For red-carpet extravaganzas, high-fashion photoshoots, gala dinners, and the rare moments that demand unequivocal statements. Imagine yourself gliding into the room in a dangerously chic Moschino jacket paired with straightline chic slacks and heels- a worthy costume for making strong statements.Love Moschino: For foodies, days spent shopping, and the few casual Fridays at work. Channel your inner flower child with a Love Moschino logo sweatshirt, some comfortable yet chic straight jeans, and those sneaker-cum-fashion statements.

12. Which One Should You Choose?

It all depends on your fashion objectives, lifestyle and budget.

If you are looking for luxury, exclusivity, and artistic pieces that are conversation starters go for Moschino. Moschino is an investment in craftsmanship and design tradition.

If you want more playful easy going trendy fashion look no further than Love Moschino. Love Moschino is the creative outlet of Moschino and is sold more affordably than its top-tier counterpart.

Some fashionistas mix both by pairing a Love Moschino T-shirt with a Moschino jacket to give their own spin on a high-low fashion expression.

Final Thoughts

In the end, the Moschino vs Love Moschino decision ultimately is a choice of luxury and accessibility. While they both share the same rebellious DNA of the brand, Moschino is the couture high-fashion expression of design, and Love Moschino is accessible street-style applicable fashion for every day.

Whether it be from either line you purchase, you now officially can become part of the playful fashion world. Whether you’re turning heads in a runway gown or rocking a casual logo tee, you’re embracing a style philosophy that’s bold, unapologetic, and endlessly creative. And that, in true Moschino spirit, is always in style.

When we went to Paris recently to visit makers and shows (such as Man/Woman) I had the chance to stay in one of the Cinabre suites, which I’ve been wanting to do for ages.

Some of the reasons for this are menswear-related. Most obviously, the rooms are above Cinabre itself, so you need no excuse for browsing some of the handmade ties, dressing gowns and vintage sunglasses when you check in.

Then there are the subtler touches in the suites: each has a brass-buttoned blazer in your size (they ask beforehand), should you need something a little smarter to go out and forgot to pack anything. OK, it’s unlikely any PS reader would find themselves in this situation, but you still have to love the idea – I imagine a whole set of tourists gradually being reminded of the pleasure of going out in a really good blazer.

The reading material in the rooms also has a menswear slant, with magazines such as Avaunt and a pleasingly niche selection of fashion books. In fact it’s probably fairer to say there’s a fashion angle, with some other craft and interiors mixed in.

But despite these menswear attractions, the bigger reason I wanted to stay at Cinabre (and indeed would want to stay anywhere) was that it looked beautiful, cosy and personal.

There are only two suites, and there’s a private entrance next door so you don’t have to go through the shop each time. If I could I think I’d always stay in small places like this, where the number of guests and staff means they always recognise you and you recognise them; though of course more than two rooms is fine.

In fact the more I think about it, we have quite a few opinions about hotels, yet it’s not something PS has ever written about. (I can’t stand windows that don’t open, for example.) Perhaps doing this more would be welcome, perhaps not; as ever I’m sure you’ll let us know. We certainly try enough given the amount the team travels nowadays.

The other advantage of small hotels is that the rooms often feel unique and characterful. Sometimes this is by design, sometimes just as result of age – members’ clubs are often a good example of the latter, where rooms just seem to accumulate random furniture over the years.

During the visit to Paris I stayed in Cinabre’s Suite 2, which we’ve pictured here. And it really is beautiful.

The lounge’s walls and ceiling are covered with fabric in a Pierre Frey print – one that Cinabre founder Alexandre Chapellier retrieved from Frey’s archive. The bed is from Hastens – not just because it’s now a fashionable name, but because the manufacturing is done in Koping, Sweden, where Alexandre’s family are from.

It’s all tasteful yet distinct, and even if the decor slips a little into louche now and again – the wave-like wall-to-wall sofa in the lounge being the obvious example – it’s all very comfortable. In that case due to serried ranks of cushions.

You can also sit on mint-green cushions around the bathroom (below) and talk to your partner while they have a bath. The big windows at the front of the suite open onto a quiet street. Or there are windows in the bedroom that look across a small courtyard into the kitchen opposite.

Yes there’s a kitchen; there’s also a separate toilet, a lounge, a dining room, a bathroom and a bedroom (the latter two divided from each other, and the lounge by curtains). The kitchen is stocked with quality drinks and food, as is the hidden bar, which is revealed when you push on a mirror in the dining room. It’s somewhere you could actually live – which I guess is how a suite should feel.

All this makes it very expensive, and I should emphasise that I was a guest of Alexandre’s during this visit. Still, I plan to bring my wife some time, probably for our anniversary later in the year. At €1150 a night it would have to be an occasion like that, though I know for some readers it wouldn’t have to be so special.

I know my wife would like how the suites are tucked away on such a quiet, pedestrianised street – Cité Bergere, in the 9th. It’s in the middle of Paris and close to Gare du Nord, but feels worlds away from the busy and touristy Grand Boulevards outside.

I would also take her to the restaurant on the corner – Les Invisibles. This is everything we like in a restaurant: small, friendly, unfussy, with great food. The PS team took Alexandre for dinner there one night and sat outside, despite the imminent threat of a storm. When it finally came poring down, everyone on the terrace crowded inside and carried on, as hail rattled on the windows.

For those that care about such things, a few celebrities and film stars (mostly American) stay in the Cinabre suites, usually for a week or two.

It’s honestly not a reason for me to want to go – if anything, I feel slightly annoyed that anyone else is staying in that room apart from me. But I can see how it elevates it in the eyes of others: it’s not just a strange little menswear thing. And I can see why celebrities would want to stay here, given its combination of luxury and privacy.

Cinabre, by the way, has expanded its clothing range recently, adding some nicely made tailoring and gowns to the silk accessories it started with. But I’ll cover those in a separate article some time.

The Cinabre Suites are available to book through their website as well as other booking platforms. The one I stayed in is Suite No.2. The floor below, Suite No.1, is a little bigger and more expensive. It includes a lovely glassed-in atrium (below) and a sofa-bed.

Prices start at €1150 and €1250 a night for the two suites respectively. Photography: Ludovic Balay / Alex Natt.

By adding on a monogram or a message, you could make that luxury gift your own.

Why this works: Association, nostalgia and transcendent exclusivity is modern luxury gifting.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Perfect Bhai Dooj Gift for Brother

Luxury gifting is not about flashing price tags, it’s about meaningful luxuries! Think about your brother’s lifestyle, his hobbies, interests, and personality. In fashion, tech, travel, grooming, etc? Use this guide to inspire you to discover the perfect designer Bhai Dooj gifts for brothers that are memorable and not ordinary. Whether you select classic favorites, fashionable pieces, or cutting-edge gadgets, just make it luxury, personal, and unforgettable.

This is because Bhai Dooj is not just a festival. It is about celebrating the lifetime friendship, protection, and mutual admiration siblings have for one another and what better way to say “I’ve got your back” than gifts that have been chosen with both intention and taste.

Chanel No 5 Perfume Review: Does It Live Up to the Hype?

Chanel No 5 Perfume Review: Does It Live Up to the Hype?

August 19, 2025

Few fragrances have been given the cult following of Chanel No. 5. Once regarded as the most iconic fragrance in history, this timeless scent has delighted the vanities of Hollywood stars, royalties and today’s arbiters of taste. But with niche fragrances, viral TikTok scents, and on-trend modern perfumery, does Chanel No. 5 still matter?

In the Chanel No. 5 Perfume Review, the included topics range from the perfume’s history to its scent profile, longevity, occasions to wear it and the classic perfume’s investment capacity to hold a place in 2025.

The Legacy of Chanel No. 5

The legacy of chanel no 5

To know about Chanel 5’s creditworthiness, going back to the beginning is a must. Exiting us out of the turn from the florality, Chanel No. 5 was revolutionary in its creation by the master perfumer Ernest Beaux in 1921. It was the first to make bold use of aldehydes to produce a clean, sparkling effect.

Named No. 5 simply because it was the fifth sample given to Coco Chanel perfume, the fragrance gave rise to an association with free-spirits and modernity. Marilyn took the mysteries of the fragrance to a whole new level, stating she goes to bed “wearing nothing but a few drops of Chanel No. 5.”

Fragrance Notes: What Does Chanel No. 5 Smell Like?

Proceeding now to the fragrance pyramid of Chanel No. 5:

Top Notes:

AldehydesNeroliYlang YlangBergamotLemon

Heart Notes:

JasmineRoseLily of the ValleyIris

Base Notes:

VetiverSandalwoodVanillaAmberPatchouliMusk

The opening is bright and effervescent, due to the aldehydes – a soapy, fizzy quality that introduces us. The aldehydes dry down to a soft, powdery floral heart, resting on a warm, creamy, sensual base. The complexity is remarkable.

Rather than any gourmand, sweet, or single dimensional fruity notes of many modern fragrances, Chanel No. 5 is layered, abstract, and blooms like a flower over a period of time.

Variations of Chanel No. 5: Which One to Choose?

Variations of chanel

Before we elaborate on the rest of this Chanel No. 5 perfume review, we should take a side glance into the various formulations of the perfume:

1. Chanel No. 5 Eau de Parfum (EDP):

Very intense and luxurious intervention with longer durability. It offers a little bit of warmth and a more sensual appeal as opposed to the original.

2. Chanel No. 5 Eau de Toilette (EDT):

Softer, airy version for use in the daytime or when the temperature is warm.

3. Chanel No. 5 L’Eau:

Is a more modern, youthful version of Chanel No. 5 perfume launched in 2016. Out of the three formulations, this is the freshest and least powdery. It seems to be marketed at a young demographic.

4. Chanel No. 5 Parfum (Extrait):

The purest most concentrated form. A classic glass bottle with a stopper and a luxury collectible.

Every version has its appeal, but the EDP or the Parfum is most likely the best option for purists.

Performance: Longevity, Sillage & Projection

Longevity, Sillage & Projection

One of the most dreaded questions in any Chanel No. 5 perfume review is to talk about the performance, so let’s see how it performs.

Longevity: 7–10 hours (EDP version) Sillage: Moderate to strong Projection: Noticeable without being abrasive

The first impression is strong with the aldehydes and then florals, however the dry-down is soft and very intimate. It does leave a trail without being suffocating and this can be both daytime to really hold its own in the evening.

Is Chanel No. 5 Still Relevant Today?

chanel no.5 relevancy

Let’s be real, Chanel No. 5 is not for everybody. The aldehydic opening and powdery floral fragrance is often criticized as being “mature” or “old-fashioned” by the younger fragrance lovers these days. In an age of gourmand fragrances (e.g. vanilla, caramel, and fruit bombs), No. 5 certainly does feel very old school with its elegance and sophistication.

Having said that, I truly feel that the release of L’Eau has been very successful at taking the much-liked fragrance and introducing it to a new generation of fragrance lovers. It still carries the DNA of the original but feels lighter and fresher.

If you love the classic sophistication, complexity, and rich heritage in a fragrance, then Chanel No. 5 remains much worthy to have in your tanks for 2025.

Who Should Wear Chanel No. 5?

I want to stress that no perfume is just a fragrance, it’s a statement. Chanel is right for:

Business: This one is spot on for corporate environments, boardrooms, meetings, and corporate events.Evening wear: Is more than perfectly fine to wear with formal, evening wear, gowns or tailored dresses.Sophisticated taste: Someone who expresses admiration toward vintage Hollywood glamour, and appreciates timeless beauty would cherish it.

In contrast, it could well be that the fragrances of the minimalistic ultra-modern or hyper sweet floral would not particularly go for Chanel No. 5.

Packaging & Bottle Design

Chanel is the essence of understated luxury, and the Chanel No. 5 bottle embodies that aesthetic. The clean lines, rectangular shapes and a minimalist label are self-explanatory. The bottle is practically a design icon, so it’s no surprise to see it hanging out in museums and referenced in design textbooks.

The unboxing experience with the Parfum version is second to none with the crystal-cut stopper and hand sealed bottle. It takes experience and appreciation to the next level, and you ultimately just feel indulgent upon opening it.

Price Point: Is It Worth It?

Chanel No. 5 is a luxury outside of the Couture house, and rightly so. It’s more than a perfume – it’s part of fashion history. Yes, there are new niche perfumes that can be more expensive! But Chanel has its heritage, know-how and presence that can not be replicated when it comes to value.

Here’s a general pricing guide (based on rates for 2025 although may vary for area):

EDT (50ml): ₹10,000 – ₹12,000EDP (50ml): ₹12,000 – ₹15,000L’Eau (50ml): ₹10,000+Parfum (15ml): ₹18,000+

With a long history as the signature fragrance for the past century and with all accolades and recognition that comes with it; Chanel No. 5 is priced according to its quality and traditions.

Chanel No. 5 Perfume Review: Final Verdict

So, is Chanel No. 5 worthy of the hype? This depends on what you are looking for.

If you are looking for a bold modern scent, that is based on modernity and trending, Chanel No. 5 is not going to be your first choice. However, if you are looking for craftsmanship, heritage, and classic style, then yes, it does.

In this Chanel No. 5 perfume review, we have discussed the complexities of its composition, versatility, and iconic status. It is still a great choice for someone who wants to add a piece of olfactory history to their vanity.

Quick Pros & Cons

Pros:

Iconic, classic fragranceGreat longevity and sillageBeautiful design of bottleScent changes and matures through the day

Cons:

Opening notes may be dated for somePrice point may not be suitable for everyoneNot ideal for sweet/gourmand fragrance lovers

Final Thoughts

Wearing Chanel No. 5 is the same as wearing a vintage Chanel jacket, it is chic everywhere, elegant always, and always fashionable. Whether you are a collector of fragrances or are a beginner dipping your toe into the world of timeless perfumes, Chanel No. 5 is one thing every consumer needs to have. In a rapidly changing world of perfume, few perfume creations have been able to remain as relevant or as revered.

So yes, it is more than a perfume. It is a work of art, a piece of history, and a symbol of timeless femininity.

10 Fascinating Facts About Yves Saint Laurent You Didn’t Know

10 Fascinating Facts About Yves Saint Laurent You Didn’t Know

August 19, 2025

Yves Saint Laurent, or commonly known as YSL, is more than just a luxury fashion label. The brand name represents the legacy of audacious creativity, innovation, and everlasting style. YSL is a name equally identifiable with designer handbags, perfumes, and couture gowns. Still, the man and the maison have many unsaid shapes to them.

Here are 10 intriguing stories of Yves Saint Laurent that will cast a new light on the brand name.

1. He Was a Prodigy in Fashion Design

At the age of mere 17, Yves Saint Laurent won a distinguished design contest that captured the attention of Michel de Brunhoff, the editor of French Vogue. His embryonic designs gave an insight into the haute couture ethos of style and apt technical structure, to build upon his career. Rarely has any other designer elsewhere in history shown such a brilliance at such a young age.

2. Handpicked by Christian Dior Himself

Probably one of the most astounding pieces of information to come out about Yves Saint Laurent was that Christian Dior himself chose Yves Saint Laurent to work at the House of Dior in 1955. Following the death of Dior, Yves Saint Laurent was the head designer of Dior in 1957 & became the youngest ever couturier at age of twenty-one.

3. He Revolutionized Women’s Fashion with “Le Smoking”

Saint Laurent unveiled in 1966 Le Smoking, the very tuxedo-tailleur for the contemporary woman. It was a shocker; women were still in gowns at that time, as Saint Laurent challenged genderless concepts of what femininity was. Today, Le Smoking remains one of YSL’s most famous designs.

4. He Was the First Living Designer Honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art

In 1983, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York opened its first solo exhibit on Yves Saint Laurent. It was also the first-ever event for a designer who was living and solidified him as a true fashion icon.

5. He Popularized Ready-to-Wear Luxury

Before Yves Saint Laurent came, high-end fashion was basically exclusive couture. In the year 1966, he launched his Rive Gauche line of ready-to-wear, thus bringing luxury fashion to the greater public. This was a move that made innumerable other fashion houses follow suit and shape the modern luxury market.

6. He Took Inspiration from Art and Culture

The influences for his design job at YSL often came from painters like Picasso, Mondrian, and Van Gogh. His extremely famous Mondrian Dress from 1965 was a marriage of art and fashion. He borrowed from cultural influences, such as Moroccan kaftans and Russian peasant blouses, for his collections.

7. He Had a Long Lasting Partnership with Pierre Bergé

Yves Saint Laurent shared his life with Bergé, who was not only a business partner, but they were lifetime friends. Together they helped YSL emerge as a global brand. After Yves Laurent’s death, Bergé was of paramount importance in ensuring a proper handling of Yves’ legacy.

8. He Struggled with Mental Health but Never Stopped Creating

Behind all the glamour for most of his life, there were bouts of depression. Saint Laurent was innovating, nevertheless, and evolving his art with avant-garde designs. Channeling personal downs into creative expression is what makes this truly the heart of their emotional impact.

9. He Was a Trailblazer for Diversity on the Runway

Long before diversity became a fashion catchphrase, Yves Saint Laurent was presenting collections with various models of color front and center in the 1960s and 1970s, a much needed proposition in an industry that was Euro-centric at the time.

10. His Legacy is More than Fashion

Over the course of history, today, YSL has become more than a mere name for a fashion house—it has evolved into a cultural symbol. From luxury fragrances such as Opium, to accessories and clothing, the name stood tall in the fearless spirit of Yves Saint Laurent. His outlook on beauty, something empowered, and artistic expression-the way of application-was and is still standing as a testimony in the fashion industry at large.

Final Thoughts

Yves Saint Laurent was a man whose personality lies beyond just that of a designer. He was a man ahead of his time who redefined modern style. His interventions to challenge gender norms took place with Le Smoking, while he installed luxury ready-to-wear brands thus establishing his mark on the very fabric of contemporary fashion. Even instantaneously after his demise, the designs of Saint Laurent are hardly forgotten for being the greatest, his brand stood as cosine to the world of fashion, and his presence was felt everywhere. New generations of designers, fashion lovebats, and style icons all across the world continue to draw inspiration from his work and his lifetime legacy, so the importance and influence of YSL are still as alive today as during his lifetime.

Can I wear this to the office?

I get this question from readers quite a bit, and I think it reveals something about how they can focus on their inner world more than the external one.

Because the obvious reaction is: how would I know? I don’t work in your office, I don’t know what other people wear. It might still be suits and ties; it might be T-shirts and shorts. Even within the increasingly common middle ground of ‘smart casual’ there’s a lot of variation and usually a developed uniform for each office.

There may have been an international ‘standard’ for business attire historically, but there isn’t really any more.

For example, a friend of mine who works at KPMG talks about how the standard uniform in his department is a polo shirt and chinos. Some wear a shirt, certainly, but tailored trousers are very rare and a tailored jacket always means a meeting.

Whereas another friend works in private wealth management. He related recently how he attended a senior-partner meeting and of the 20 people round the table, 18 of them were wearing shirts and half-zip cashmere sweaters (below). That’s often not a great combination, but that’s a topic for another day – the important point is that even without suits, and no official dress code, a uniform had clearly been established.

And of course we’re all familiar with the modern finance uniform of a white shirt and gilet/vest – to the extent that you see some adherents being teased for wearing them even when it’s 40 degrees, and they’re sweating buckets.

People don’t wear a suit and tie anymore, but each office or profession still tends to develop a uniform. Men love uniformity – they don’t like sticking out, they don’t like having to think – but more importantly uniforms develop in offices because the role of clothes is different to everyday life: clothes indicate a level of professionalism, of common purpose. Even if it is a T-shirt and shorts.

So the first question to ask yourself, if you’re one of those readers that has asked whether they can wear something to work, is how much the proposed clothing deviates from the norm – from this implicit dress code.

Look around you: does anyone else wear the thing you’re deliberating about? Let’s say it’s a pair of cream tailored trousers, which you’ll wear with a pretty conservative shirt and loafers. Does anyone in your office wear anything like that?

Discount the oddballs, of course – in my previous life there was a salesman who wore a bowler hat to work. He worked in telesales though and never saw any clients, so no one really cared. And he stopped after a few months.

Outside of those people, does anyone wear cream trousers? I’m going to assume the answer is no, because otherwise you probably wouldn’t be asking. So then consider how much would those trousers would stand out. Be honest: would they be close to the sharp, pale chinos others wear, or dramatically different in a world of charcoal and navy suiting?

If it’s the latter, don’t wear them. Save them for a nice summer event and focus on wearing a better cut version of those worsteds to the office.

I mention cream trousers by the way, as they’re an item I wore to my old office more than once. No one else wore anything like it, and they always stood out too much.

Actually more importantly, they didn’t achieve what I wanted, which was to dress with the old-world elegance I’d seen in Dressing the Man and other sartorial primers. Because elegance is quiet, subtle. It’s not about things that make people stare at you from across the floor.

Then there’s that mantra of ‘dress for the job you want, not the job you have’. As ever there is some truth in this saying, and also a lot of rubbish.

If you work in the postroom, don’t wear the CEO’s three-piece suits: it won’t help you get that job in any way.

But, there’s usually no harm in dressing a little better than you have to. Not in double-breasted chalkstripes (one bank I know had an implicit rule that only partners wore DBs) but maybe having your suit altered so it fits better, or keeping your shoes polished nicely. You will just look good, like you have your shit together.

There are some offices where everyone wears anything, a complete mixed bag of styles, expressions and personalities. But sometimes that is the uniform – to have a style, to be creative. And readers in those environments tend not to ask this question, because it is so open.

Most offices are consistent social situations, with clear leaders. You are usually the best person to judge whether something would be appropriate, and I suspect what readers are often asking for is encouragement to wear something more unusual. But while other fora might provide that enabling, I tend to the opposite: I’ve felt the burn of getting it wrong too often, and had to give gentle advice to employees when I became more senior.

The menswear references we love are useful in many regards – the importance of fit, principles of elegance, great colour combinations – but it’s important to see them in context. Those people from the 1930s or 1950s were if anything more conservative than us, rarely deviating in obvious ways from their peers; the dressers who were admired did so in terms of quality and taste. That’s the key lesson I’d take from them in terms of propriety.

But let’s end with some reader participation: what’s the implicit uniform in your office, and if you’re happy to share, what’s the most inappropriate thing you’ve ever worn?

Styling Your Balmain Bridal Look

For an understated style that will truly let a Balmain wedding gown serve as the one and only event:

Hair: Either slicked back into a bun, laid-back modern waves, or a ponytail-high, all interpreting the gown’s sharp lines and geometry.  Makeup: Bold eyes or red lips scream Balmain walk-and-keep-your-base-fresh-and-dewy combined with glamour.  Accessories: Sculptural earrings, a metallic clutch, or minimalist strappy heels will amp up the Balmain glamour. And let the dress shine.

Don’t forget about a veil – even if you’re not a veil wearer, a sheer, understated veil can help soften a bold Balmain look, while simultaneously keeping it bridal.

Where to Buy or Custom Order a Balmain Wedding Look

Because Balmain does not have a formal wedding line, brides would typically:

Choose from the runway: Select your gown from Balmain’s seasonal runway of couture and ready-to-wear collections (their bridal appropriate fabrics show up in white, ivory, or metallic colors.)Request Customizations: Partner with a personal stylist or luxury boutique to request slight alterations for a wedding-ready finish.Visit Balmain Flagship Stores: You may be able to find something really exclusive or perhaps private couture appointments for a custom wedding request.Check out High-End Retailers: Retailers like Net-a-Porter, Darveys, Moda Operandi, and Farfetch will often have Balmain’s most bridal appropriate styles.

A Balmain Bride Is…

Confident, fierce, and fashion-savvyLooking for something beyond lace and tulleA trendsetter who appreciates real artistrySomeone who wants to feel glamorous and beautiful as well as empowered on the big day

If this sounds like you, a luxurious Balmain wedding dress could be just the ticket.

Final Thoughts: Is Balmain Right for You?

Technically speaking, your wedding day is the ultimate excuse to spoil yourself, and there is nothing more spoiled than couture. There is nothing wrong with a traditional gown, but a Balmain Dress guarantees that your look will be unforgettable. With modern silhouettes, luxurious fabrics, and a powerful aesthetic, Balmain Dresses make an amazing option for brides who aspire to be different.

From structured minis with pooling skirts, bold & beautiful dresses and flowing capes, the brand offers dresses for every wedding celebration.
