In line with the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards taking place on 7 September 2025, LUXUO reflects on the influence of pop stars beyond the music industry. As luxury houses enlist pop icons, these partnerships evolve into more than endorsements, becoming collectible artefacts that blur the line between culture and commerce. Be it Billie Eilish or Britney Spears, luxury houses and lifestyle brands are increasingly enlisting pop stars not just as faces of campaigns, but as co-creators whose influence shapes products, collections and cultural narratives. From stage to storefront, LUXUO delves into how pop icons are shaping fashion as cultural currency, turning limited-edition collections into must-have collector’s items.

Demna’s Britney Spears Capsule Collection With Balenciaga 

Balenciaga’s Spring 2026 capsule collection dubbed “Exactitudes” with Britney Spears is a culmination of former creative director Demna’s ten-year tenure at the house, merging 35 past collections with archival silhouettes and even garments from his personal wardrobe. By integrating Spears into this milestone moment, Balenciaga underscores how pop icons function as brand signifiers — instantly recognisable figures who carry cultural memory and commercial weight. Comprising a limited-edition series of ready-to-wear and accessories, an exclusive playlist curated by Britney Spears and two remixes of her most renowned works by BFRND, the series is described as a “fine line between luxury and fashion”.

Spears — whose early-2000s image epitomised the late 90s and early 2000s era of pop excess and mass appeal — uses her likeness on pieces and transforms the capsule into a marketable piece of fashion that bridges fashion merchandise with music memorabilia. Similarly, Demna’s tenure at Balenciaga saw him capitalise on various celebrity endorsements both off and on the runway. The Spring 2026 capsule collection, however, is less about tapping into 2000s nostalgia and rather the amalgamation of Demna’s long-standing research on “contemporary archetypes” and turning it into a collaboration that resonates across generations. For Demna, the collection is something of a swansong for his time at Balenciaga, which he summarises as a “homecoming after all these years, a very formidable experience of love for fashion and dressmaking”.

Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams

Pharrell Williams collaborated directly with Tiffany & Co. on the Tiffany Titan collection — contributing to the design of bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings in 18k gold and titanium — featuring spear-like motifs inspired by Poseidon’s trident. The collection marks a departure from Tiffany’s traditional design language, emphasising bold, structural forms alongside pavé diamond details. Building on the House’s legacy of collaborating with visionary artists, the Tiffany Titan reflects the strategic direction of Tiffany under Alexandre Arnault and highlights Pharrell’s role in shaping products within the LVMH ecosystem, reinforcing his influence in both fashion and luxury jewellery beyond simply fronting the campaign itself.

The Tiffany Titan marked a departure from the delicate and demure pieces that fans of the brand have become accustomed to seeing, such as the “Lock”, “T” and “Knot” designs. Instead, the Titan plays on the juxtaposition of hard and soft as its motif incorporates a link that is curved and soft against the sharpness of the spear to form a symbol of fearless individuality. The collection is close to home for Pharrell, who commented, “I’m very inspired by the water, and the name of this collection, “Titan” draws inspiration from Poseidon, ruler of the sea, King of Atlantis.” “Atlantis” is also the name of the community Pharrell grew up in Virginia Beach. Pharrell goes on to explain that every detail in the collection is intentional, for instance, the use of black titanium is “a physical manifestation of beauty in blackness”.

Jacob & Co.’s X PEACEMINUSONE G-DRAGON

K-pop phenomenon G-Dragon partnered with Jacob & Co. to launch the limited-edition PEACEMINUSONE Pendant, reinterpreting his signature daisy motif with one missing petal. The collection is offered in two versions: 925 sterling silver with yellow sapphires and tsavorites, or 18K white gold with full pavé diamonds and a central fancy vivid yellow diamond. Each pendant is individually numbered, presented with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and suspended from a 20-inch adjustable chain.

His PEACEMINUSONE brand — established in 2016 — has been a platform for such collaborations, including partnerships with Nike and Giuseppe Zanotti. By directly contributing to the design, G-Dragon merges his creative universe with Jacob & Co.’s high jewelry craftsmanship, exemplifying how pop icons increasingly shape product development and collector appeal in luxury markets.

PUMA x Rosé

BLACKPINK’s Rosé launched her first full collaborative capsule with PUMA, marking a strategic step for the singer beyond her music career. As both global ambassador and hands-on collaborator, The PUMA x Rosé collection features reimagined iterations of the brand’s iconic Speedcat sneaker. The range includes Speedcat Ballet with pointe-inspired laces and the Speedcat OG Premium with statement lacing alongside apparel such as oversized track jackets, relaxed track pants and mesh tops emblazoned with a custom “ROSIE” graphic.

Accessories — including the X-Small Duffle and Micro Grip — inject personalised details that reflect Rosé’s aesthetic vision. Rosé was involved in the design process, shaping a collection that fuses classic streetwear with elevated, feminine touches. “This PUMA x ROSÉ collection is really special to me because it reflects so much of who I am, both on and off stage. I wanted every piece to feel like a quiet rebellion, something that empowers you to show up as your most honest, fearless self,” she states.The collaboration’s design ethos channels Rosé’s vision into an expression of sporty, streetwear-coded designs, demonstrating how pop icons can shape contemporary shaping luxury and lifestyle codes through tangible products and releases.

Billie Eilish x FREAK’S STORE

Billie Eilish has leveraged her influence in pop culture to enter the fashion space through multiple collaborative projects, most recently with Japanese retailer FREAK’S STORE and previously with US-based streetwear brand Freak City. The 2019 Billie Eilish x Freak City capsule consisted of ten pieces of streetwear — including hoodies, T-shirts, bike shorts, and tube tops — featuring her signature neon-green graffiti motif. The collection sold through Eilish’s official store and Freak City’s website and included digital copies of her album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” This early collaboration demonstrated Eilish’s ability to translate her music persona into a tangible lifestyle product, tapping directly into her fanbase while establishing her style as a commercial asset.

In 2025, Eilish extended this model with Billie Eilish x FREAK’S STORE, a capsule featuring artist merchandise inspired by her latest album “HIT ME HARD AND SOFT”. The collection includes relaxed beige T-shirts with prints of the singer’s face, gradient designs and album-specific graphics, positioning Eilish as both a creative collaborator and a marketable icon in the Japanese streetwear space. The drop coincided with the announcement of her global tour dates, leveraging cross-promotion between her music and fashion ventures. A$AP Rocky x Marine Serre

In 2020, Marine Serre teamed up with A$AP Rocky’s AWGE creative collective for a Regenerated capsule collection that saw an amalgamation of streetwear sensibilities with couture-informed design. Marking one of Serre’s rare collaborations, the project features oversized puffer jackets, patchwork denim, hooded dresses and accessories including durags, caps and stirrup-strap leggings — all unified by her signature crescent moon motif. The collection is grounded in sustainability, with roughly 75 percent of the materials regenerated from deadstock or vintage garments.

Rocky’s influence is visible in the looser, slouchier silhouettes and styling, while Serre’s precision and attention to detail from sleeve lengths, layering and silhouette fit ensure each piece retains its luxury finish. The result is a high-end take on streetwear that is functional and culturally resonant. The capsule demonstrates the commercial potential of pairing an established designer with a cultural influencer, showing how strategic, selective collaborations can elevate brand visibility.

Selena Gomez x Coach — “Selena Grace” Collection

In 2017, Selena Gomez partnered with Coach to co-design a leather goods collection, centred around the Selena Grace bag. The structured, double-handled carryall reflects Gomez’s effortless, all-American style, with sleek lines, versatile wearability and exclusive colourways like Black Cherry, White and Red. Gomez worked closely with Coach’s creative director Stuart Vevers to ensure the collection felt personal. Every piece also bears her signature and with personal affirmations like “Love yourself first” and “To be you is to be strong” in hang tags, key rings and embossed details. Launched globally in September 2017, the Selena Grace collection exemplified a successful celebrity-brand collaboration and a personal storytelling and authenticity reaching a fanbase of both fashion and Gomez’s music.

Cheap weaves tend to be inconsistent, sloppy, have gaps, and overall lack symmetry with unevenness.Cheap weaves also tend to have loose stitches that are sloppy and edges that are fraying.Cheap weaves also tend to be inconsistent, bulky, and/or look unfinished in addition to all the prior imperfections listed.

Luxury bags are crafted to last. Any sign of bad construction is a warning sign.

A couple of years ago I bought a vintage gold chain, prompted initially by style considerations. 

One was the fact I wear so many fewer accessories – ties, handkerchiefs – despite still loving them as works of beauty, and of craft. Unfortunately they don’t say what I want to with clothing anymore – which is a product of both the way society has changed and I’ve changed myself. We’ve written about this tension before here, and about wearing handkerchiefs less here

A chain as a piece of jewellery doesn’t offer the same options for design and expression, but it does appear occasionally, pleasingly, inside the line of an open-necked shirt, or on the back of the neck when wearing a crewneck or T-shirt. It is something decorative in the same area of the body. 

That appearance of a chain at the back of the neck was another factor for me, this time in terms of what flatters me. 

I love wearing T-shirts and crewneck sweaters on their own, but I’m always aware that they’re not the most complimentary thing. I have a relatively long, slim neck and I know collared shirts will always flatter me more. They frame the face and lead the eye towards it. 

This effect has become less pronounced in recent years as I’ve bulked out (I’m pretty much one chest size up from 10 years ago) but on the flip side, becomes more pronounced as you age and everything becomes a little less firm. 

The nice thing about a chain is that it provides a point of focus on the back of the neck, almost like another T-shirt collar. I’ve used neckerchiefs to achieve the same thing in the past, but that’s a slightly more dandyish style and not one I always want. 

Other factors in my decision were the fact that I like jewellery, but find it hard to wear it in ways that aren’t too bold for me. (I wear an occasional cuff or bracelet, but something like the turquoise rings a few friends wear feel too much.) 

And I used to wear a chain when I was a teenager, which came back to me as soon as I started trying new ones. This did feel like me – on some half-buried psychological level. 

But what chain to get? Diving headfirst into this rabbit hole, one of the things I realised was that the main factors were width and length. 

Chains for men don’t vary in style as much as for women, but in common with other jewellery (or glasses) a millimetre here or there can make a difference. Chains range in width from 1mm or 2mm up to very chunky 6mm or 8mm – though by that point it’s a very different look. 

Research online also proved quite limiting, and it was seeing options in person that brought everything into focus. I would highly recommend doing so if you can; most high streets still have a jewellers of some sort, even if most of the selection is women’s. 

The best range I found was at Michael Rose in the Burlington Arcade, and I ended up having good conversations with Michael there and other staff. They were very knowledgeable and friendly, and I think I’ll do a second piece next week on Michael’s opinions about vintage jewellery and my chain in particular. After 30-plus years of doing it he has a few.

In person it became clear that 2.5mm to 3mm was a good width for my chain – not too delicate, definitely there, but not too bold or chunky either. 

Next the length. This is driven largely by practical considerations. I didn’t want my chain to come swinging out of my shirt, but I do like to always undo two buttons – it just seems like a more flattering ‘V’ shape, not tight and buttoned up. 

For that to work, but the chain not be super-long, something around 25-26 inches seemed good on me. Again, trying chains in person made this more concrete. 

Another common length for a chain is something that hangs visibly in the open neck of a shirt, and is sometimes worn on top of knits and T-shirts. Lucas wears a chain in this mode and it is 24 inches – but bear in mind that he has a 17-inch neck and mine is 15.5, so that makes a big difference. Indeed height does too – it’s a question of ratios just like trouser rise or cuff width.  

Lastly, the design of the links. When you look online you quickly understand the main types – belcher chain, box chain, curb, cuban, wheat, rope, figaro. There’s no point describing them all here, and the preference is largely a personal one, but my general advice would be to err towards the subtle and more masculine. 

Curb chains have particular associations, but only when they’re big and chunky. Rope can look a little feminine and figaro a little fussy, but most others are nice. Once more, try them in person. 

Mine is a variation on a box chain called a ‘mystery chain’ which means that it has steel links inside the gold ones, making it stronger. It’s an interesting detail that Michael said a lot of people don’t realise is there unless the jeweller points it out. Even many jewellers don’t recognise it.

Apart from the steel element, mine was 18ct solid rose gold – but a very subtle rose, less copper than most of the rose golds today. Being 18ct it cost just over £1000, which was about what I was looking to spend – this was an investment and something I was going to wear practically every day. 

Now, the problem with this logical rundown of an article is that it suggests there’s unlimited choice with chains – that’s it just a case of working out what you want. In reality, vintage chains are not that common and getting rarer. They tend to be better made, more unusual and better value, but the supply is finite. 

One thing jewellers often do therefore – and did in my case – is cut down old chains that were originally intended for something else. When you look at vintage pieces sitting on a bust in a jeweller’s window, some of them will be longer than they appear, because they were originally intended for things like hanging a woman’s cuff around her neck, or another piece of clothing. 

Fortunately with me the one I liked was one of these longer pieces, and could be cut down to the length I wanted. Again, fortunately what was left was enough to sell separately – otherwise I would have had to pay for the entire length (and possibly make it into something else, if I wanted).

As for the pendant, this was a present from my wife, an old pocket-watch winder in rose gold with tourmaline and bloodstone on either side. 

Why that? Thinking about it, I think it’s best to leave that out – something like this is personal, between the two people involved, and shouldn’t be overrationalised. The only important thing is it means something to you, and in my case it’s something people rarely see as well, that I keep close to my heart. Or rather close to my chest.

Sat by the window of The Red Lion just off Jermyn Street, Nina Penlington tells me what first led her to Savile Row: “My plan was to learn some tailoring skills and move into designing menswear. After about six weeks I realised that ain’t happening. Not everyone can be Lee McQueen.”

That was 18 years ago, and since then Nina has gone on to cut for three very different, long-established houses of the Row: Dege & Skinner, Gieves & Hawkes and, most recently, Edward Sexton – working under Edward himself until he passed in 2023.

In 2024, Nina took some leave for health reasons. “It gave me some head space, and I started to sketch some of the designs that I’ve been thinking about for years. My drawings are a bit shit, but they got the ideas out of my head and helped me refine my voice aesthetically.” This year she started her own brand: Nina Penlington Bespoke.

While Nina says she doesn’t have a fixed house-style, I think it’s fair to say there is a strong house-culture. 

It’s one where British rock ‘n’ roll glamour mixes with the hazy psychedelia of Laurel Canyon Americana. Where a velvet suit is de rigueur for popping into the shops and getting a pint of milk and a scratch card on your way home from a night out. (Nina has previously made tailoring for Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, so there’s probably more truth to that description than I realise.)

Underpinning it all is a sense of fun mixed with thoughtful intention. “Clothes are not something to take too seriously. But making clothes is something I certainly take seriously,” she says. Both facets are perhaps evident in the photo above of one of her offshore bespoke commissions – a single breasted dinner suit in a wool/mohair cloth by Smith Woollens, crowned with a xeroxed image of Bryan Ferry. 

The style is fairly typical of what one can expect from Nina: padded shoulder, moderately wide lapel, high armhole and a higher, suppressed waistline. Nina offers a full bespoke service requiring a minimum of three fittings alongside a cheaper offshore programme where a suit is cut by her, but basted and finished offshore after one fitting. 

One of her signature pieces is the ‘Get Back’ suit inspired by a three-piece worn by Paul McCartney during The Beatles valedictory public performance on the rooftop of 3 Savile Row in 1969. 

“I’ve spoken to so many customers about this suit over the years,” says Nina. “It looks like a smart, classic 60s West End suit, but what’s interesting is how Macca makes it feel so casual when he wears it with beaten-up shoes or a grubby grandad shirt.” This is the suit I’ve commissioned (or, as Nina calls it, “the Manish version of the Get Back suit”), and I’ll review it in the autumn.

That gig (and the 2021 film that documents it) has proved an inspiration to Nina in more ways than one. “I love how the stage-managed image of ‘The Fab Four’ evolved into four guys with very individual styles; they’re untethered from what had come before. I’m fascinated by that creative freedom, and I feel like I’m now in a place where I get to make the clothes I enjoy.” 

She catches herself, buries her face in her hands and hastily adds: “Not that I’m comparing myself to The Beatles!”

Nina expands on what that freedom means for her clients: “At a big tailoring house, you’re working to someone else’s time – which is right. But now I get to choose how I spend that time. I feel unencumbered, and have the space to think about each individual and their style and the garment I’m making for them.”

Some of that time is spent reading and responding to the cloth once it’s laid out on the board. “What might feel right on paper, might not work when it’s chalked out. What’s the cloth telling you? I might want to change the lapel slightly or add a lapped seam.”

Of course, everything is done in consultation with the customer. “There’s no point if you won’t wear it. And I really want people to wear their good stuff – life’s too short. But I do have more confidence telling you what I like, which is part of what I think people are paying a cutter for.” 

And taking cues from the cloth is how Nina loves to work. It’s the reason she’s curating a bunch of her favourite fabrics along with suggestions on the styles she thinks they complement best; this can then be presented to a new customer, which I think is a great way of introducing them to the brand’s world.

“Often a cloth dictates to me what it should become as a suit”, she says. A prime example of this is the development of her Western suit, something Nina toyed with unsuccessfully for years, until a customer came in with a twill overcoat cloth that had the right weight and robustness for what she envisioned.

And now the Western suit she offers is full of technical and hand-finished elements that call upon her past cutting experiences. Consequently, this style is only available through the full bespoke programme.

The pockets are curved ‘smile pockets’, finished at each corner with arrowheads that are hand sewn by Nina using a heavy thread specially sourced from a notions shop in New York.

The jacket has no centre-back seam – a style Nina is familiar with from cutting mess kits at Dege & Skinner – and so the rear yoke isn’t merely a decorative Western signifier, but instrumental to adding shape to the back and helping the jacket hug the neck. The yoke on the trouser performs a similar function in place of darts. All the yokes are felled and top stitched by hand.

These details and techniques have been refined over time. “My style is wildly different to Davide [Taub, head cutter at Gieves & Hawkes], but I learned a lot from him in the way he would look at one element of a garment, get obsessed with it, and evolve it slowly until it was perfected.”

The house model that might initially strike you as counterintuitive is the Everyday Velvet suit. After all, isn’t velvet nocturnal? A vampire cloth only seen after dark in candlelit dining rooms and smoke-filled cigar lounges? “One of the things that makes a suit rock n’ roll to me is taking a cloth that’s mostly associated with evening wear and wearing it whenever you want,” says Nina.

And so, the Everyday Velvet reframes the cloth into something that can be worn for any occasion. The style is based on a vintage velvet suit Nina had as a teenager. “Growing up in north Wales in the 90s, I wore a lot of vintage stuff and got the piss taken out of me a lot because vintage wasn’t cool the way it is now. But I adored that suit, it eventually fell apart and I’ve never been able to replace it until now.”

Nina describes the jacket as “casual country” with big patch pockets, swelled edges and most strikingly a notch lapel. “A lot of customers expect it to have a peak lapel, but I’m slowly pulling them over to the dark side.” Another subtle subversion of the traditional velvet dinner jacket.

Given her love of vintage, it’s no surprise that Nina (like many tailors and designers) embraces the idea of her suits becoming ‘future vintage’. But her motives are less about proving durability or stylistic longevity, and more concerned with the story it tells others about the original owner.

“I think you buy vintage for the life of a garment. And when you wear it you get imbued with its history which influences how you feel in it. I recently bought a ridiculous shearling coat in San Francisco, and every time I put it on I think: who was the groupie that wore this?”

So how does she want the wearers of her tailoring to feel? “I want an ordinary guy to feel like a rock star,” she says. It’s a declaration that resonates, in a summer where the triumphant return of Oasis and the passing of Ozzy Osbourne have got me thinking about why so many people seem to be yearning for old-fashioned rock stars.

I think it’s because the essence of a rock star is someone who presents a truly authentic and individual expression of themselves, but in today’s cultural environment that authenticity is harder to find – or maybe it’s just harder to believe. So feeling like a rock star might simply mean developing an individual style and wearing the clothes that feel most like you. “It’s not about leather trousers and a skinny tie. It’s about having the freedom to dress as you wish,” says Nina.

To readers who prefer that dress to be more backstage than front man, more George Martin than George Harrison, I should say that the eclectic playlist of Nina’s house specialties (the ‘Get Back’ suit, the Western, the Everyday Velvet) are merely jumping off points – a shorthand for communicating her visual identity.

Within reason, there aren’t many restraints on what you can make – this is bespoke, after all. “I’m more than happy to make a morning suit or a classic business suit,” she says. Although, interestingly, Nina estimates that as many as 95% of her clients don’t wear her suits to work. Presumably the 5% includes artist and musician Emma Richardson, who’s planning on wearing her full bespoke suit on the job – it just happens to be on tour with the band Pixies.

But flexibility of bespoke aside, there’s no doubt that Nina’s is a style with a clear and strong viewpoint, which inevitably means it won’t be for everyone. She’s sanguine about such things: “Finding a cutter is about finding someone you align with. It’s like going on a date, they might tick all the boxes, but you need to have chemistry.”


Whatever your take, and for the record I’m a big fan, I hope we can agree that the state of bespoke tailoring has always been invigorated by the impetus of a fresh perspective – albeit here one that’s been honed over nearly two decades in the trade.

Not that Nina believes she is pioneering something new. “I’m not sure if it is possible to do anything entirely new now, unless you’re a really avant-garde designer. But I’m not a designer, I just love the craft.”

And it’s true, Nina Penlington Bespoke does evoke some of the uproarious spirit of 70s trailblazers Nutters of Savile Row. She’s just turned the volume down slightly, to better suit today’s audience.
