New in Immersive Retail: Amazon Launches Virtual Stores

Tech-giant and e-commerce leader, Amazon, recently ventured into the immersive retail space with the launch of Amazon Beyond, the company’s newly minted 3D virtual shopping division—a major milestone in the advancement of immersive retail. With 10+ virtual stores on their app and website, Amazon engaged shoppers and encouraged product discovery across multiple brands. But what do Amazon’s latest virtual storefronts mean for the future of virtual shopping?

When industry leaders like Amazon invest in innovative technologies, it signals market acceptance and marks a clear path to going mainstream; brands and retailers are likely to follow suit as this technology gains mass adoption. The immersive retail industry is likely to undergo a rapid expansion as brands try to not lag behind, falling on the latter end of the adoption curve. This approach is set to become the norm, especially for brands looking to capture the attention of modern consumers.

Debuting with a mix of 3D rendered and photographed experiences, Amazon launched multiple virtual stores (available in the virtual showrooms hub) that showcase compelling 3D visuals, interactive content, must-have product selections and playful animations. For the 2024 holiday season, the e-commerce giant sought to help shoppers find the perfect gift for everyone on their list with multi-brand experiences in the Virtual Holiday Shop and Virtual Toy Shop. The hub also includes curated single-brand showrooms and shoppable tours of influencer homes.

In the Virtual Holiday Shop, visitors are greeted with a festive experience where they can explore 100+ gifts from brands like Kate Spade, Coach and more. The 3D experience features shelves in diverse store sections such as Gifts for the host, Perfect stocking stuffers, Next-gen gifts and more. Amazon plans to refresh the experience with new products throughout the holiday season, unlocking new surprises for gifting inspiration. The Virtual Toy Shop spotlights popular toys, games and activity kits from beloved brands like Play-Doh, Disney and more—visitors are immersed in a toy-themed 3D space with multiple animations, some of which show the toys in action. Amazon also released multiple single-brand virtual showrooms, creating 3D spaces dedicated to LEGO®, Samsung, Star Wars, SMEG and other notable brands. A few influencers even enabled Amazon to create shoppable tours of their homes to inspire shoppers on how to prep their homes for the holiday season.

“We’re always innovating to enhance the shopping experience and empower customers to discover products in easy and fun ways,” said Carmen Nestares Pleguezuelo, Amazon VP of North America Marketing and Prime Tech, in a statement. “With the Virtual Holiday Shop, we are excited to transport shoppers into a new immersive experience where they can browse over 300 of the most coveted gifts and toys of the season.”

Available on the Amazon website and the Amazon mobile app, each immersive experience showcased functionality found in Obsess-powered virtual stores: 3D 360 views, point-based navigation, product hotspots, high-res zoom in, add-to-cart capabilities, interactivity, animations, music, media content and more. As the world’s largest retailer, Amazon’s adoption of virtual stores affirms our mission at Obsess to create the next-generation e-commerce interface—immersing consumers in highly interactive and unique creative experiences targeted to product discovery and brand storytelling. Over the years, Obsess has partnered with the world’s leading brands and retailers in fashion, beauty, CPG, home and beyond to implement the virtual store technology on their own e-commerce websites and apps, with the same performance, quality and ease of access.

OpenSim user growth cools down with chilly weather – Hypergrid Business

The weather’s been getting cooler here in the US where I live — some days, at least. The weather’s been a little wonky lately. And there have been other things happening in the country that make me want to spend less time in the real world and more time in a virtual one. So it makes sense that registered users and land area both went up in the public OpenSim grids.

What’s more surprising is that the total active numbers went down — by more than 2,700 users.

Sure, Moonrose, which reported over 900 active users last month, seems to be having website issues and did not publish its stats this month. In addition, Vida Dupla, which had 375 actives last month, did not report its active user numbers this month. And Great Canadian Grid, which had over 600 actives last month, is now closed.

But several grids also reported significant drops in active user numbers. OSgrid reported a drop of more than 800 actives compared to last month, Craft World saw a drop of over 200, and five grids lost more than 100 actives each.

So there’s something going on beyond just a grid closure and some reporting issues.

Maybe everyone went out partying for Halloween and spent less time in-world? Or maybe other people like the cooler weather and are enjoying the fall leaves and brisk walks while wearing cozy sweaters?

Nope! According to reader Paul Clevett, from Wolf Territories, OSgrid is down for maintenance. And I found the announcement. Thanks, Paul, for the heads up!

Apparently, OSgrid is currently offline, and has been since November 7, because it’s storage cluster was running out of space.

“OSgrid has 17 years of data which is approx several hundred million assets,” the announcement said. And it gets worse. The grid stores both the asset data and a redundant copy, but they’re not stored at the actual size — every asset looks bigger than it actually is.

To fix the problem, the grid’s storage needs to reconfigured, which involves moving millions of assets and scrubbing out the phantom extra space to free it up again. Doing this while people are using the grid would create a bad user experience, so they put it into maintenance mode during the bulk of the work.

The bad news is that they don’t know how long it’s going to take. The good news is that they don’t expect any assets to get lost.

Anyway, I am now tracking a total of 2,677 public grids, of which 295 were active this month and 232 published their statistics. If you have a stats page that we’re not tracking, please email me at maria@hypergridbusiness.com — that way, your grid will be mentioned in this report every month, for additional visibility with both search engines and users.

This month, OSgrid was the largest grid by land area, with 32,867 standard region equivalents, even though it lost more than 2,000 regions, while Wolf Territories Grid was the most active, with 7,379 unique logins over the past 30 days.

Our stats do not include most of the grids running on DreamGrid, a free easy-to-use version OpenSim, since these tend to be private grids.

OpenSim is a free, open-source, virtual world platform, that’s similar to Second Life and allows people with no technical skills to quickly and cheaply create virtual worlds and teleport to other virtual worlds. Those with technical skills can run OpenSim worlds on their servers for free using either DreamGrid, the official OpenSim installer for those who are more technically inclined, or any other distribution, while commercial hosting starts at less than $5 a region.

A list of OpenSim hosting providers is here. Download the recommended Firestorm viewer here and find out where to get content for your OpenSim world or region here.

Hypergrid Business newsletter is now available

Top 25 grids by active users

When it comes to general-purpose social grids, especially closed grids, the rule of thumb is the busier the better. People looking to make new friends look for grids that already have the most users. Merchants looking to sell content will go to the grids with the most potential customers. Event organizers looking for the biggest audience — you get the idea.

Celestia's Ginger Upgrade Now Live On Mocha Testnet, Mainnet Upgrade Scheduled For December

Modular blockchain network Celestia announced that the Ginger upgrade is now live on its Mocha testnet, with plans for a Mainnet Beta launch in December.

Ginger introduces “The Doubling,” which immediately boosts Celestia’s data availability throughput by 2x. This is achieved in V3 by reducing block times from 12 seconds to 6 seconds, enhancing the user experience with faster transaction finality. The upgrade also lays the groundwork for community governance, which will enable an increase in block size to a maximum of 8MB per 6 seconds, or 1.33 MB/s.

Key changes with Ginger include several Celestia Improvement Proposals (CIPs), along with an important non-consensus update in celestia-app V3. This update introduces Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR), a new congestion control algorithm developed by Google, as the default setting.

What Changes Are Coming To Celestia?

In particular, CIP-21 introduces “authored blobs,” which include the signer’s address in the blob metadata. Validators on the Celestia network now verify that the signer matches the address that paid for the blob, eliminating the need for rollups to separately retrieve and process PayForBlobs (PFB) transactions. This improves the efficiency of the verification process by allowing rollups to directly check the signer field of the blob for authenticity. Meanwhile, CIP-24 introduces a modification to the gas scheduler, setting variables like GasPerBlobByte and TxSizeCostPerByte to be changeable only through a network upgrade rather than on-chain governance. This change is designed to stabilize transaction costs, making them more predictable. It also simplifies gas calculation by allowing offline methods without requiring network queries before each transaction.

Furthermore, CIP-26 outlines changes to the block time and related timeouts, now controlled by the application version. The update reduces block time from 12 to 6 seconds in V3, which aims to increase network throughput and reduce transaction finality times. Additionally, the mempool’s ttl-num-blocks parameter is increased from 5 to 12 to ensure consistent transaction behavior with the faster block time. CIP-27 sets limits on the number of PayForBlobs (PFBs) and non-PFB messages that can be included in each block. The proposal establishes soft limits of 600 PFB messages and 200 non-PFB messages per block during the PrepareProposal stage. These limits are designed to prevent extended block processing times by capping the number of transactions processed in each block, with benchmarks targeting a 0.25-second processing time per block on the recommended validator configuration.

Finally, CIP-28 establishes a 2MiB (2,097,152 bytes) limit on individual transaction sizes for Celestia. This limit will be enforced at all stages of transaction processing (CheckTx, PrepareProposal, and ProcessProposal), making it a consensus-breaking change. The rationale behind this limit is to avoid issues with propagating large transactions, even with larger block sizes like 8 MiB. It also provides room for future increases in block size and decreases in block time to further boost throughput.

Bybit Announces CeDeFi Partnership Expansion For bbSOL With RateX, Save, And Marginfi

In Brief

Bybit introduces strategic integrations with RateX, Marginfi, and Save for bbSOL, aiming to expand DeFi yield opportunities for bbSOL holders.

Bybit Announces CeDeFi Partnership Expansion For bbSOL With RateX, Save, And Marginfi

Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit introduced new strategic integrations for its bbSOL offering, aiming to broaden decentralized finance (DeFi) yield opportunities for bbSOL holders. This expansion comes through partnerships with RateX, marginfi, and Save, which work together to enhance the utility of bbSOL. These collaborations reflect Bybit’s commitment to delivering innovative CeDeFi solutions, merging the strengths of centralized and decentralized finance to maximize yield generation and promote asset growth.

“Bybit is proud to provide CeDeFi solutions that empower our users to access, earn, and grow their assets with bbSOL across both centralized and decentralized platforms,” said Emily, Head of Web3 Product Development at Bybit, in a written statement. “Our partnership with RateX brings an innovative synthetic yield option to bbSOL, and integrations with protocols like Save and marginfi extend flexible, high-value opportunities within the Web3 community. Bybit remains committed to supporting users in maximizing yield with versatile options that meet the evolving needs of today’s digital asset landscape,” she added.

Bybit has expanded bbSOL’s DeFi capabilities through strategic partnerships and integrations, offering users innovative ways to grow their assets. The integration with RateX introduces synthetic yield options, enabling bbSOL holders to trade synthetic Yield Tokens (YT) of various yield-bearing assets with leverage. This allows users to capitalize on yield movements more efficiently. Additionally, RateX offers features like Earn Fixed Yield and Yield Liquidity Farming, where users can deposit bbSOL to convert floating yields into fixed yields, secure future returns, trade yield, or provide liquidity for yield trading.

In order to enhance bbSOL’s utility within the DeFi ecosystem, Bybit has partnered with Save and marginfi, two leading lending and borrowing platforms on Solana. Save, with $379M in Total Value Locked (TVL), and marginfi, with $500M TVL, connect bbSOL holders to broader Web3 opportunities, facilitating lending, borrowing, and yield optimization through decentralized platforms.

bbSOL maintains a competitive APY of up to 22%, combining base yield with additional DeFi earnings. It also offers benefits such as zero commission fees, flexible redemption options, and seamless access to both CeFi and DeFi income streams, outperforming traditional staking products.

Currently integrated with eight Solana DeFi projects, including RateX, Save, and marginfi, bbSOL is also supported across eight Bybit CeFi products. Users can purchase bbSOL directly with stablecoins, use it as collateral, convert over 300 assets to bbSOL at no cost, and trade bbSOL/USDT with up to 10x leverage on spot margin trading.

What Is bbSOL?

Established in 2018, Bybit is among the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally by trading volume, catering to a user base exceeding 50 million. The platform is designed for both cryptocurrency investors and traders, offering a suite of features, including a high-speed matching engine, round-the-clock customer support, and multilingual assistance to accommodate its diverse global community.

In September, Bybit launched bbSOL, its first exchange-based Liquid Staking Token (LST) on the Solana blockchain. This token was introduced in partnership with Sanctum, Kamino Finance, Orca, and Solayer. bbSOL bridges Bybit’s centralized exchange (CEX) with Web3 platforms, offering users various rewards. By staking Solana via Bybit Web3, users will be able to receive bbSOL, which provides access to opportunities across both the CEX and Web3 products.

Stride Introduces Echos App, Empowering Users To Create AI Agents To Mint, Send, And Trade Memecoins

Multichain liquid staking platform, Stride introduced a new application called Echos in beta, which functions as an autonomous AI agent capable of posting on social media platform X and managing its own cryptocurrency wallet. Echos, developed by Stride contributors using a Celestia Layer 2 rollup, allows users to create their own Echo, deploy it publicly, and interact with the decentralized ecosystem.

With Echos, users can mint tokens, send them to their Echo agents, and trade them on a decentralized exchange (DEX). Over time, additional decentralized finance (DeFi) features will be integrated into the Echos ecosystem. As the platform evolves, Stride’s existing liquid staking tokens (LSTs) will serve multiple functions, including as liquidity on the DEX and as collateral for leverage applications.

The goal for Echos is fast development and continuous iteration. Currently, in beta, many more features are expected to be introduced in the coming weeks and months. At present, users can launch, send, and trade memecoins, though creating an Echo is restricted. However, three dev-designed launch Echos are available for users to follow on X and messaging application Telegram, where they can track on-chain holdings and speculate on tokens the AI agents may discuss.

While creating an Echo is currently permissioned, it will soon become permissionless. Users can freely launch memecoins and send them to Echos, and future developments will enable user-created Echos to interact with other Echos and smart contracts on the Echos blockchain. This will lead to an ecosystem of autonomous Echos interacting and trading on-chain.

What Is Stride?

It is a cryptocurrency platform that allows users to earn rewards by staking their cryptocurrency. Staking involves locking up a specific amount of cryptocurrency in a wallet for a set period to help secure and maintain the network’s operations.

Recently, Stride has implemented Interchain Security, which shifts block production duties from Stride’s own validator set to the Cosmos Hub validator set, the central blockchain within the Cosmos network. This change signifies that Stride is moving from using staked STRD tokens for its economic security to relying on staked ATOM tokens. By doing so, Stride aims to align its security protocols with those of the Cosmos Hub, which currently holds $2.3 billion in staked ATOM.

U.S. City Now Accepts Bitcoin for Tax Payments – Metaverseplanet.net

With the increasing use of cryptocurrencies in various areas of life, a U.S. city is now beginning to accept tax payments in crypto.

Starting in 2025, Detroit will accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies for city fees and tax payments. With this decision, Detroit is set to become one of the largest U.S. cities to embrace crypto as a payment method. The city has announced that crypto payments can be made through its PayPal platform, positioning Detroit as a hub for technology and innovation.

Large fluctuations in cryptocurrency values have made it challenging to use them for payments. For example, Bitcoin has surged by 80% this year, leading many people to hold onto their assets rather than spend them. To address this, Detroit will convert crypto payments into dollars instantly, avoiding a “hodl” strategy and stabilizing the payment process.

Detroit’s decision is also seen as an incentive for tech and blockchain entrepreneurs in the city. Blockchain technology and stablecoins like PYUSD and USDC are growing in popularity, especially for online transactions due to their fixed values.

Cryptocurrency experts believe that digital currencies will become widely used in the future, reducing reliance on the traditional banking system. In this vision, instant transfers, no bank fees, and eliminated transaction delays will transform global finance. Perhaps Detroit’s move is a sign of this emerging future.

Coinbase Acquires Utopia Labs’ Team To Accelerate On-Chain Payments

In Brief

Coinbase has acquired the Utopia Labs team to accelerate the development of on-chain payment solutions for Coinbase Wallet.

Coinbase Acquires Utopia Labs’ Team To Accelerate On-Chain Payments

Company operating a cryptocurrency exchange platform, Coinbase announced its acquisition of the team from Utopia Labs, a cryptocurrency payment provider and stablecoin onramp/offramp.

The Utopia Labs team will join Coinbase’s Layer 2 network, Base, to help accelerate the development of on-chain payment solutions within Coinbase Wallet, a self-custody wallet that allows users full control over their cryptocurrency. This means the private keys, which are crucial for ownership of the cryptocurrencies, are securely stored on the user’s mobile device rather than with a centralized exchange.

The team brings extensive experience in building on-chain payment products, and Coinbase aims to leverage this expertise to further its mission of providing low-cost, fast, and globally accessible payments.

In Q2 2024, stablecoins saw $8.5 trillion in transaction volume across 1.1 billion transactions, highlighting the growing importance of improving user experiences in the space. Jesse Pollak, creator of Base and Head of Protocols at Coinbase, emphasized the collaboration’s goal of creating a future where on-chain payments improve the daily lives of individuals and businesses worldwide.

Base: What Is It?

Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain developed by Coinbase, designed to provide a secure, cost-effective, and developer-friendly environment for building on-chain applications. Built using the OP Stack in collaboration with Optimism, Base is incubated within Coinbase, leveraging the company’s extensive experience in crypto product development. The network is intended to progressively decentralize over time, and currently, there are no plans to issue a new native token for the network.

Recently, Base introduced permissionless fault proofs to enhance the decentralization of the network and reduce the risk of centralized control. These fault proofs are modeled after a similar implementation on Optimism’s OP Mainnet. Both networks are part of the Superchain ecosystem, alongside other projects like Zora, Mode, and Fraxtal.

Benefits of Hiring a Top VR App Development Company for Business

In today’s fast-paced digital world, businesses constantly seek innovative ways to engage their customers. One of the most exciting developments in this area is virtual reality (VR). Hiring a top VR app development company can help your business leverage this technology effectively. Whether you want to create immersive experiences for your customers or streamline internal processes, a professional VR development team can make it happen. This blog explores the key benefits of partnering with a leading VR app development company and how it can transform your business.

Understanding VR and Its Importance

Virtual reality immerses users in a computer-generated environment, allowing them to interact with 3D worlds using specialized devices like VR headsets. This technology has applications across various industries, including gaming, education, healthcare, and real estate. As businesses explore VR’s potential, hiring a skilled VR app development company becomes crucial.

Enhanced User Engagement

One of the primary advantages of VR technology is its ability to engage users more effectively than traditional methods. A top VR app development company knows how to create interactive and immersive experiences that capture users’ attention. By employing engaging storytelling techniques and realistic simulations, businesses can enhance user satisfaction and drive higher engagement levels.

Interactive Marketing Campaigns

Incorporating VR into your marketing strategy can elevate your brand. A skilled development team can help create VR experiences that showcase products in an innovative way. Imagine allowing customers to virtually try on clothes or explore a new car model before making a purchase. Such experiences create memorable interactions that resonate with customers.

Improved Customer Understanding

VR technology allows businesses to gather valuable insights into customer behavior. By observing how users interact with VR environments, companies can understand preferences and pain points better. This data can inform product development and marketing strategies, leading to more tailored offerings.

Cost Efficiency in Training and Development

Training employees can be expensive and time-consuming. A top app development company specializing in VR can develop training programs that simulate real-life scenarios. This approach allows employees to practice skills without the risks associated with traditional training methods.

Safe Learning Environment

VR training provides a safe environment for employees to make mistakes and learn from them. For instance, healthcare professionals can practice surgical procedures in a simulated environment before performing them on actual patients. This not only reduces training costs but also enhances employee confidence.

Increased Retention Rates

Studies show that learners retain information better when they engage in interactive training. VR experiences cater to different learning styles, ensuring employees grasp complex concepts. By investing in VR training solutions, companies can increase retention rates and reduce the time required for training.

Boosting Creativity and Innovation

Creativity fuels innovation, and VR technology serves as a powerful tool to foster creativity. A VR app development company can create virtual spaces where teams brainstorm ideas without limitations. This immersive environment encourages out-of-the-box thinking and collaboration.

Collaborative Virtual Spaces

Teams can collaborate in a shared virtual environment, regardless of their physical locations. This capability opens up new possibilities for remote teams and global collaborations. By harnessing VR, businesses can break down geographical barriers and bring together diverse talents to innovate.

Prototyping and Visualization

For businesses involved in product design, VR allows for rapid prototyping and visualization. Designers can create 3D models and immerse themselves in virtual prototypes. This process facilitates real-time feedback and iterative design, ultimately leading to better products.

Competitive Advantage

In a crowded marketplace, staying ahead of the competition is essential. By embracing VR technology, businesses can differentiate themselves and create unique value propositions. Partnering with a top VR app development company allows businesses to innovate faster and more effectively than competitors who stick to traditional methods.

Unique Customer Experiences

Offering VR experiences sets businesses apart. Customers appreciate innovative solutions that enhance their experiences. Whether it’s an engaging product demonstration or an interactive tour, businesses that invest in VR gain a competitive edge.

Brand Loyalty and Trust

Engaging customers through VR creates lasting impressions. When customers have memorable interactions with a brand, they are more likely to return and recommend it to others. Investing in VR can foster brand loyalty and build trust among customers.

Customization and Scalability

Every business is unique, and VR solutions should reflect that. A top app development company understands the importance of tailoring solutions to meet specific business needs. They can develop custom VR applications that align with your goals and objectives.

Tailored Solutions

Working with a specialized VR app development company ensures you receive solutions that address your business’s unique challenges. The team collaborates with you to understand your requirements and deliver a product that meets those needs.

Future-Proofing Your Business

As technology evolves, so do customer expectations. Investing in a flexible VR solution allows your business to adapt to changing demands. A top VR app development company will ensure your application remains relevant and scalable, accommodating future enhancements and updates.

Increased Return on Investment (ROI)

While investing in VR development may seem significant initially, the long-term benefits can lead to substantial returns. By enhancing user engagement, improving training efficiency, and differentiating your brand, VR solutions can drive profitability.

Measuring Success

A reliable VR app development company will help you establish metrics to evaluate your investment’s success. Analyzing user engagement, training outcomes, and sales data allows businesses to quantify the benefits of VR solutions.

Cost-Effective Marketing

When businesses utilize VR for marketing, they often see higher conversion rates. Interactive campaigns create a buzz, leading to increased brand awareness and customer acquisition. The ability to showcase products in an immersive manner can significantly boost sales.
