The Tag-Team Brawler That Captures the ’90s

An unprecedented attack across the galaxy – Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, and many more heroes the last line of defence left between Annihilus… and all life. The future is in your hands, yet will you be enough to save it? Thus goes the story of Marvel’s latest endeavour into gaming, MARVEL Cosmic Invasion.

This title sees you pitted against Annihilus, a villain hellbent on destruction – as is status quo for the majority – willing to stop at no cost whilst he destroys life. Any of you who have played the Marvel vs. Capcom series (in my case through the Dreamcast) will be familiar with the way this is achieved, that being through the use of 2D side-scrolling gameplay, and the tag-team mechanic I’ll touch upon later.

MARVEL Cosmic Invasion takes this same approach, albeit working a slight detour in how it’s achieved.

Old-School Foundation, Modern Power

Core gameplay sees you running through campaign missions, which are in abundance, whilst taking the mantle of various iconic Marvel heroes; Spider-Man, Iron Man, and many of the X-Men, are all here, and most importantly, harbouring distinct and genuinely interesting skill. Before we get to that however, it’s best to go over the fundamentals that you must know to succeed in any side-scrolling fighter.

It goes as you’d typically expect: basic attack, special attack, block and party, and special moves. As far as basics go, not much to remember, and personalised animations incorporated into each and every character will make you feel as if you’re truly fighting the flying monstrosities running around New York. Master these and you can achieve anything in MARVEL Cosmic Invasion.

Cosmic Swap

The fun truly begins once the full breadth of these move-sets are opened up to you, introducing characters who can fly, or the tag-team mechanic. 

Flying is simply explained – double tap A to become airborne – leaving tag-team moves to stand out; press LT to swap heroes, or hold LT and press any attack button to summon them for a brief attack, also extending to specials moves creating an attack of cataclysmic proportions.

There are many modern aspects thrown into the mixing pot here too, most intriguing of all being the levelling system. Whether you have a favourite hero to main, or find yourself rotating through the wide roster, you’ll gain XP upon each mission completed, leading to perks and benefits such as extra HP to guide you through your playthrough. Whilst often simple, and quite frankly what you’d expect as a bare minimum for any game in this genre, MARVEL Cosmic Invasion has a way of creating an engaging combat foundation, pivotal in a fighting game, yet modernised for new audiences, and filled with all that comic book goodness.

Web-Slingers and Adamantium Claws

Nowhere is this more apparent than the skillset of every hero. Each character has a refreshingly distinct kit of moves, be it Spider-Man’s webs putting a spin on the basic gameplay, or Wolverine’s claws guaranteed to iron out your flaws (adamantium doesn’t really work for my pun there before you comic enthusiasts come after me). Each basic attack is elevated to new heights through the use of combos, tag-team, and special abilities, leaving enough diversity to fill your campaign playthrough… for the most part.

You see, the gameplay loop is largely fun, I was enjoying defeating foes no matter their appearance (I don’t discriminate) and each boss battle that concluded stages only grew in sense of grandeur. Unfortunately, and perhaps due to the innate shortcomings of the genre, the novelty wore off eventually, leaving little incentive to progress any further. I believe this comes down to a number of factors, such as each stage not offering much in the way of new mechanics of actual progression, each stage following the same format yet wrapped slightly differently, and side content being optional to the point of having no reward.

All of this culminates in a downward slope of concentration, quality, and enjoyment from MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, yet fans of similar titles in the genre will likely not find issue in this.

Returning to my point about the side content, each stage offers you three distinct challenges focused around various heroes. They’ll often be something such as “Defeat X amount of enemy with X ability/hero”, providing brief enjoyment and diversity to your objective as you start, yet becoming a tedious chore that even Thanos wouldn’t punish his worst enemy with by the end.

Leaving this side content with no reward or incentive to be completed can be viewed two ways: paying homage to the 90s roots embedded in the title, or a system which has been underdeveloped in a modern gaming world, especially when compared to the other modernised aspects of the title. I definitely fall into the latter camp, viewing it as a let-down from a game with masterpiece potential.

A Pixel-Art Masterpiece That Falls Just Short

As hinted at earlier, level design is just fine in MARVEL Cosmic Invasion; it won’t become detrimental to your overall experience, yet it’s unlikely to make a crater-sized impact to enjoyment either. It’s simply passable. This largely returns to that same issue of, more or less, traversing through the same laid out stages multiple times, only difference being aesthetic. For huge Marvel fans such as myself, this was enough to keep me going (seeing each environment in stunning 2D pixel-art was a blessing) yet to the average layman, this staleness may become apparent more immediately.

With gorgeous sprite-based visuals, modernised 90s based mechanics, and a foundation of combat able to provide hours of entertainment, MARVEL Cosmic Invasion more than earns itself a place in the fighting genre. Sadly, a lack of refreshing mechanics introduced, largely the same level design format, and overall repetitiveness, leaves the title a highlight to fans of the genre, yet missing out on masterpiece status in my eyes.

It’s one of the few better horror games that have come out lately and you will come across multiple endings in the game.

Here’s how you can unlock the hidden ending in The Sushi House.

 

How to get the hidden ending in The Sushi House

To get the third and hidden ending for the game, you need to choose the route where you did not tell the detective about Yuki.

If you’ve finished the game, you can access the second ending via the “Continue” menu.

After you’re done freeing Yuki, she’ll ask you to look for a ladder.

The ladder is inside the freezer room but do not go in yet as you’ll be locked. Grab the wrench from the room Yuki was locked inside.

Then, go inside the room which has a generator and huge green pipes. Use the wrench on the pipe valve to create a gas distraction. Let the Manager walk into that room while you circle the area and enter the butcher’s room (where the Manager is always heard chopping).

Pick up the door knob from the counter in the room, near the corpses.

Then, go to the freezer room and place the door knob first.

Enter the freezer and get the ladder. You will be blocked by the Manager again.

This time however, you can escape the room with the door knob attached.

Bring the ladder to the vent area above the stairs (near a generator).

Climb up and you’ll reach the vents above the shops.

Wait for the Manager to get under you and drop the hatch on his head. You’ll now be able to escape the area with Yuki unharmed.

The leaked Rosette Tigeress skin is finally coming to Fortnite, and it will be free. Epic Games added the skin in November 2024, yet it hasn’t come out yet. Fortunately, you will be able to unlock it starting Monday, December 8. The skin will be one of the rewards from daily cups, alongside Snowy Ops and other cosmetics.

With the launch of Chapter 7, Epic Games has overhauled the competitive schedule with a couple of new tournaments. While the big money is in the $1 million tournament, smaller daily cups are now offering exclusive cosmetic rewards.

How to unlock Fortnite skins for free in Chapter 7

The upcoming skin will be available through a series of daily ranked cups running from December 5 to December 21. By competing in these daily events and finishing with a high placement, you will be able to unlock the Rosette Tigeress and Snowy Ops skins for free.

Interestingly, Epic will release this new Fortnite cup in several game modes. The daily tournaments will be hosted in Solo Battle Royale, Duos Zero Build, and Duos Reload playlists. Thanks to this, you can unlock skins for free even if you’re not a fan of the Battle Royale mode.

The prize pool also includes other items like the Fame ‘Brella Reloaded, the Woven Fang pickaxe, and the Leopard’s Hoard back bling, making these cups great for collectors. To see exactly where you need to place to unlock these items, players should check the Compete tab in the game. Before joining the cup, check out all the changes that arrived with the latest Fortnite update, as Epic changed a couple of important things.

FAITH: The Unholy Trinity is an Atari-style horror game that really hones in on the religious superstitions and fears of the time period. You play as a disgraced priest, going back to a house with a possessed girl to fix the mistakes of his past.

First things first, the sound design of this trilogy is fantastic, incorporating the classic, Atari sound with its rotoscoped visuals. Not to mention, it has a genuinely riveting story about guilt, responsibility, and faith itself. After all, what you’re about to do in this game has not been approved by the Vatican.

While it’s a good time if you’re a fan of simplistic gameplay, it can be a drag for other players. Some people can’t push themselves through slow, methodical gameplay, and that’s okay — however, the lore of this game is so rich that it would be a genuine crime to overlook it. Seriously, it’s wonderfully done, and anyone who simply watches a playthrough of it would get nearly the exact same experience as if they had played it themselves.

This is definitely a game you’d want to give your full attention to, and if the gameplay will take that attention away, just watch someone else finish it.

Cry of Fear is actually pretty divisive when it comes to survival horror games, mainly because of how incomprehensibly difficult it can be — deceptively so, too. However, there is one section of the game that just gets outright enraging: the platforming during the Nightmare sequences.

At the same time, Cry of Fear has a creepy atmosphere and a solid story, so it would be a waste if a player were to overlook this game just because of its janky difficulty. With that in mind, just watch someone else play the game and let them deal with the platforming segment instead, saving you unnecessary frustration.

Originally a Half-Life 2 mod, you play as Simon, trying to navigate his hometown of Stockholm as everything starts to crumble around him. There are a couple different endings to this game, so if this is a game you’re going to watch instead of play, be sure to look up all the endings so you can get the full picture.

Not to mention, this was a horror game that got popularity because of YouTube, so this will just take you back to the early 2010s.

Outlast is perhaps the scariest game of Hide & Seek that you could play; and while it’s incredibly nerve-wracking to try and get through Mount Massive Asylum and survive everyone you’re trapped with, it’s actually ten times funnier to watch someone else try and survive this game, especially when the chases begin.

When you panic run in a horror game and it leads to disaster, it’s frustrating. However, if you watch someone else playing the same game panic and end up getting killed in-game, it’s hilarious instead.

In an interview with VICE, co-founder of Outlast Phillipe Morine credited YouTube for helping the game’s success, stating: “I guess horror games are so popular on YouTube because seeing somebody being scared is a guilty pleasure. It becomes a combination of horror and humor.”

He’s exactly right, too, and it’s a major reason why I tend to prefer watching playthroughs of this game rather than playing it again.

While everyone is raving about Dispatch, created by former members of Telltale, the original Choose-Your-Own-Adventure horror experience complete with QTEs and heavy decisions was The Walking Dead.

As gut-wrenching as it is freaky, in The Walking Dead, you play as Lee, trying to survive a post-apocalyptic world overrun with walkers, protecting a little girl named Clementine along the way. While it’s fun to play, it’s even more fun to see the multiple other pathways that other players would take.

You’d make choices like who to follow and who to trust, and that will influence the entire outcome of the game; seeing someone else make the decisions you wouldn’t want to allows you to see where that pathway goes, guilt-free. You could watch 20 different people play this game, and no two players would approach it the exact same way, feeling like a fresh, new experience every time.

Just have a box of tissues nearby for when you start watching. You’re going to reach for them.

While this is a fantastic gaming experience (especially when you have to get into the game files to progress), there’s a lot that you’re going to miss.

That’s because many of the scares are percentage-based, meaning that there’s only a slight chance that some scares will even happen in your playthrough. In the same vein, it could show up in someone else’s playthrough, with some scares unique to those who are recording the game in the first place.

Hide and Seek horror games make for good content in general, especially if you’re watching someone particularly entertaining try to run and hide — bonus points if the game happens to be Alien: Isolation. In Alien: Isolation, you play as the daughter of Ellen Ripley herself — who also happens to carry the family curse of having their ship taken over by a Xenomorph.

Being one of the best examples of a game with highly intelligent A.I., the Xenomorph learns from you and how you play; and considering how everyone plays differently, it’s genuinely fascinating to see how the creature adapts to other play-styles.

For example, you may not frequent the vents, but a YouTuber you’re watching does. Considering the Xenomorph didn’t need to adapt, you’d completely miss out on the alien now entering the vents to hunt you; however, you’d catch it in someone else’s playthrough who would make these mistakes. If nothing else, it’s worth watching to see the A.I. in action.

Of course, it’s even funnier when the person you’re watching is running around without a plan, leaving them vulnerable to attacks (and subsequent jump scares).

Until Dawn

Until Dawn

Supermassive games are notoriously difficult to Platinum, and Until Dawn is no exception to this. There’s no shame in not really replaying the game to see all the choices, just because of how tedious it can be. However, if you want to scratch that itching curiosity to see what happens if you made a different choice, you can just watch someone else go through the game.

Considering the ending of the game is based on how many people you’re able to keep alive (and that’s tough in and of itself), and your choices constantly have ripple effects that could bite you in the behind down the line, it’s not going to feel the same. Not to mention, I personally wasn’t a fan of Until Dawn, believing that it’s better suited to be a cheesy slasher film, so watching a playthrough (in my opinion) actually improves the experience.

It’s not the scariest horror game out there — if anything, the sheer amount of camp and humour shoved into the story takes away a ton of the suspense it tried to build up. Gameplay can feel clunky, with pacing cut with a dull knife, so it’s really better all around to just watch someone else play instead.

The game wanted to be a movie so badly, it’s better to just treat it like one.

The early days of YouTube Let’s Plays were filled to the brim with two games: Slender: The Eight Pages, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Seriously, you couldn’t dive into the gaming tag without seeing either game at least twice.

The virality of these games comes from the people who played them for entertainment. With creators like PewDiePie and Markiplier skyrocketing into fame from games like Amnesia, it helped bring horror games back into the limelight. This era of gaming, the early 2010s, was mostly full of AAA Action Horror and lacking in actual fear and substance, so seeing games prioritising atmosphere over jump-scares felt revolutionary.

Speaking of Markiplier, I would dare to say that the only reason why Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) was noticed, much less got as popular as it has, was due to the King of FNAF himself. This would only be amplified with MatPat’s Game Theories for the franchise’s insanely complicated lore. To this day, I believe Scott Cawthon just kept adding to the games because he didn’t know what he wanted to do with it.

Story aside, the gameplay itself was actually unique and revolutionary for the time, being a concept that had never been executed in anything horror fans had seen prior. Did it get a bit big for its britches? Absolutely, but by this point, people don’t care about that as much as they care about watching their comfort content creators dive into the series.

Even if you’re like me and aren’t a fan of where the series went, it’s still taken the internet by storm, and players can’t help but wonder how others would react to these games. Spoiler alert: the reactions are hilarious.

Either way, Five Nights at Freddy’s has turned into a giant in the horror industry — hell, in gaming as a whole — that even if you don’t want to watch someone play the games, you can just jump into the movies instead.

It’s the grand finale of the F1 championship this weekend, and I can’t quite believe how close it’s managed to end up. It should still be in Lando’s control, but as we’ve seen from the last two months of racing, with McLaren DNFs, DSQs and retrospective strategy bungles, it’s kept things just about possible for Max and Oscar. Tomorrow’s race will either end up being terribly dull or massively exciting.

But for video games, we’re well into trailers and awards season for the final month of the year, with a big glut of 2026 game trailers (and some final 2025 ones) already dropping this week, and a metric ton of them set to come next week as well at The Game Awards.

How Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 sets up a huge Scream reunion


With Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 now in theaters, two iconic faces of ‘90s horror are sharing the big screen once more. The film, based on the popular video game franchise, sees Matthew Lillard reprise his role as the evil William Afton, the serial killer in control of the animatronics in the first movie. He has less of a presence in this sequel, but a good friend is there to pick up the slack: his Scream partner-in-crime Skeet Ulrich.

[Ed note: The rest of this article contains full spoilers for the ending of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.]

Ulrich plays Henry, father to one of Afton’s early victims and also the killer’s former business partner in the founding of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. That last bit is kept hidden until the end of the movie’s credits, setting the stage for quite a showdown in a third Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, should it happen.

Henry has never appeared in any of the games, but Ulrich’s performance makes him a bright spot of the otherwise disappointing movie. It’s also an exciting moment for horror fans, given Ulrich’s history. The actor originally shot to fame as one half of the killer Ghostface duo in the original Scream, alongside Lillard. And while this is the first time the two are working together on a movie outside of that slasher franchise, Lillard tells Polygon they’ve remained close over the years.

“I see him all the time,” Lillard says. “We do conventions a bunch every year, so when we go away on those weekends, we eat every meal together. He’s one of my best friends in the world. I see him more than most of my friends from high school.”

Unfortunately, while they’re still spending their time together at cons, they don’t actually get to interact on set. Ulrich and Lillard don’t share any scenes in the movie. Afton actually appears entirely in dream sequences, though his return is teased at the end of the film.

However, Lillard is hopeful a third movie will be ordered by Universal Pictures, which he believes will dig deep into the story between the two characters.

“I think [fans are] going to be really excited about who he plays versus who I play,” Lillard says. “They’ve always said out loud that they want to do three films. If this weekend goes the way we’re all hoping it goes, they’ll do a third film. And I think that relationship really plays out in a really powerful way in the third film.

“Lillard is also confident Ulrich knows how special it is to be in a project adapted from a beloved video game series.

“The good news about Skeet and I is that we both care deeply about fandoms,” he says. “The way we interact with the Scream fans the way I’ve been interacting (and now he’s interacting) with Five Nights fans, it’s about holding up that community and sort of seeing them, respecting them, and adoring that fandom.”

Some actors might buckle under that pressure. Lillard, on the other hand, seems to thrive in it.

“[Afton’s] this iconic character that people adore, that that fanbase has built up in their minds over the last 15, 17, 18 years,” he says. “And so to step into those shoes, deliver in a way that people, for the most part, were happy with the performance, and then be welcomed and celebrated in that community, is awesome. It’s different than going off and doing a movie and sort of letting it go off into the ether. It’s a standing piece of legacy that as an actor you’re proud of.”

And with the second movie in that potential trilogy in theaters now, the wait begins for word on a third and final installment. Whatever the case, Lillard is ready for the next step in his FNAF journey.

“I know it sounds sort of cliche, but playing an iconic character for a fanbase that’s as voracious as the FNAF fanbase is a gift.”

Tim Cain, the man who created Fallout, has announced that he has rejoined Obsidian Entertainment, the team responsible for Fallout: New Vegas. Naturally, it has caused fans to get a little bit excited, hoping for a new Fallout title.

Cain originally joined Obsidian in 2011 as a programmer, working on games like South Park and Pillars of Eternity. He left the company in 2020 but did keep working with them on a contract basis, co-directing The Outer Worlds. He also acted as a consultant for that game’s sequel, The Outer Worlds 2.

Tim Cain made the announcement that he’s returning to Obsidian as a full-time employee on his own Youtube channel, saying: “I’m back at Obsidian. I’m there as a full-time employee and in-person, so not remote, and I’m not a contractor anymore. This means that I’m not working at other places, although there’s at least one game that I worked on [elsewhere] that I know is going to ship.”

So, what’s he working on? Unsurprisingly, he cannot say.

“I can’t talk about the project that I’m working on at Obsidian, just because that’s covered by NDA,” he stated.

He also advises that you don’t try to figure outwhat he’s working on: “Don’t bother guessing, you’re not going to guess right.”

That would seem to rule out a return to Fallout since that would probably be many people’s first guess and fervent hope. Perhaps The Outer Worlds 3 is already in the works? There’s also the possibility that he’s working on Avowed 2. Or an entirely new IP.

Whatever it winds up being, Obsidian has been very busy this year, releasing Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, and Grounded 2 in Early Access. That’s pretty damn impressive. And with Tim Cain back and kicking ass, the future is looking good for Obsidian.

P.S. While I haven’t written a review for it yet, The Outer Worlds 2 has been thoroughly enjoyable so far.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 just kicked off its opening weekend in theaters, but fans of the franchise can already preorder the sequel on 4K Blu-ray at Amazon, Walmart, and Gruv. The Limited Edition Steelbook is up for preorder for $38 at Amazon and Gruv (and $44.25 at Walmart). If you’re interested in adding this to your collection at launch, you may want to secure a preorder. The original Steelbook Edition sold out prior to launch, and a second Steelbook Edition did the same.

If you still need to grab a Steelbook Edition of the original, you’re in luck: Universal Pictures reprinted last year’s version ahead of the sequel’s premiere. Five Nights at Freddy’s Limited Edition Steelbook launched December 2 and is in stock for $33 (was $35) at Amazon and $30 at Walmart. The reprint released alongside the new Ultimate Collector’s Edition, which is exclusive to Amazon and comes with a different steelbook case, a metal poster, and more.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 isn’t reviewing well with critics, and that’s the kind way of saying it. The sequel is currently sitting at a 13% on the Tomatometer and a 31/100 on GameSpot sister site Metacritic. It’s faring better with audiences so far, though. On Rotten Tomatoes, the Popcornmeter is at 88%, which is actually slightly higher than the original. On Metacritic, the sequel has garnered a “generally favorable” 6.8/10.

To be fair, the 2023 film didn’t earn great reviews from critics either, but that didn’t stop it from becoming one of the most successful video game adaptations of all time. Five Nights at Freddy’s is Blumhouse’s biggest box office hit with $291 million worldwide. Check out the new collectible editions of Five Nights at Freddy’s below.

HoYoverse just hosted a sizeable Honkai: Star Rail Special Program, revealing more than just the game’s next major update. Version 3.8 was the big highlight, of course, with the new release arriving soon, on December 16-17 depending on your server region.

Alongside showing everything coming with this next update, the developer also announced that 3.8 will go on for eight weeks, rather than the usual six. V3.8 is dubbed “Memories are the Prelude to Dreams”, and it brings an end to the Amphoreus journey.

The story in “Memories are the Prelude to Dreams” takes place after the final battle of Amphoreus, where Constance “The Dahlia” appears to deliver a twist: the Trailblazer’s memories are scattered, with many parts missing.

This final quest revolves around finding them in order to piece together the mystery, and involves a return to Penacony. This memory-hunting adventure is told from the perspective of Firefly, which will also explain how she entered the dreamscape initially and met the squad.

The new playable character is The Dahlia, whose power is linked to the the Remembrance path, which allows her to fabricate memories. Despite taking her powers from the Remembrance, The Dhalia actually follows the Path of Nihility in-game: she’s a 5-Star character who shines in teams dealing Break DMG.

The Dhalia can unleash a Gloomy Zone that causes Toughness Reduction inflicted by allies to trigger Super Break DMG, even before you break your enemies’ Weaknesses. The Dahlia can also invite one teammate to become her Dance Partner, which allows them (and her) to deal additional Super Break DMG each time they attack an enemy. If you trigger her Ultimate after picking a Dance Partner, she applies Type Weaknesses of both partners to enemies.

While The Dahlia is the only new character appearing in this final Amphoreus update, there’ll be reruns aplenty, with an unusual third banner phase to make up for the extra long wait for 4.0. Appropriately for her role in the story, Firefly will make her return alongside The Dahlia in Phase 1, while Fugue and Lingsha will both have banner reruns in Phase 2, which is expected on January 7th. A bonus two-week-long Phase 3 will then begin on January 28th, seeing brief reappearances for popular returning characters Aglaea and Sunday, before things (presumably) go back to normal with the new annual update.

Something else to look forward to in 3.8 is The Chrysos Awoo Championship, which invites players to become chimera trainers and compete in team-based battles. The Remnants of Twilight event kicks off with the new patch, too, featuring its own set of challenges. However, HoYoverse have confirmed that there won’t be an extra event during Phase 3 — but hopefully that’ll give you some time to wrap up the last of the Amphoreus story content, which is longer than the previous four chapters put together.
