Bitcoin retreated on Tuesday as the United Arab Emirates announced it would exit OPEC effective May 1, sending oil prices surging and rattling financial markets already navigating the geopolitical fallout of the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.
The UAE’s departure ended its 59-year membership in the oil cartel and sent Brent crude climbing roughly 6% to above $103 per barrel.
Bitcoin dropped from $79,260 on April 27 to an intraday low of $75,849 on Tuesday, according to CoinGecko data, and is currently trading at around $77,000. The S&P 500 shed nearly 1% from Tuesday’s local high of 7,213 as oil’s climb above $103 weighed on risk assets.
On prediction market Myriad, owned by Decrypt’s parent company Dastan, users see a 75% chance that crude oil’s next major move takes it to $120 per barrel, up from 62% on Monday.
But even before Tuesday’s macro shock, Bitcoin’s order book had already flagged a formidable ceiling: a series of sell orders between $80,400 and $82,000, each approximately $3.3 million in size, that has remained intact for over 24 hours, according to CoinGlass.
Why the $82K level matters
The sell wall sits at a technically significant junction.
The $80,000 to $82,000 band encompasses the 200-day exponential moving average—a widely tracked measure of long-term price trend—and coincides with a CME gap that Singapore-based trading firm QCP Capital described as pivotal for Bitcoin’s sustained recovery.
The convergence of structured overhead supply and key technical levels leaves the asset suspended between competing forces.
“If Bitcoin fails to close above the gap, it likely reinforces the idea that this move is still corrective rather than impulsive,” Markus Levin, co-founder of XYO, told Decrypt. “Rejection at that level would indicate supply is stepping in, potentially triggering profit-taking and a rotation back toward lower support zones.”
Below Bitcoin’s current price, however, bids are stacking around $76,800 and the $75,000 zone, per CoinGlass.
The sell wall’s persistence reflects a deliberate market structure rather than a sudden surge of bearish conviction, according to Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey Group. The $80,000 to $82,000 band is a dense liquidity zone where strong selling pressure naturally emerges, Sun said, adding that sellers are willing to release supply in batches at key levels precisely because demand exists below—a dynamic that becomes self-reinforcing as long as buyers fail to push through convincingly.
“Even if the price briefly pushes through, if there are no corresponding signals from spot buying, ETF inflows, and the derivatives market, the upward pressure remains significant,” Sun told Decrypt.
Not all analysts share that bearish read.
Jeff Mei, COO of BTSE, told Decrypt that greater UAE output could mean lower input costs and softer inflation over time, leaving room for central banks to ease—though the path depends on whether the Strait of Hormuz reopens to commercial shipping. For now, “global oil prices and their effect on the economy will overshadow even positive developments such as the CLARITY Act for weeks to come,” Mei said.
What’s next?
Beyond oil markets, investors are also watching the Fed. The central bank’s two-day policy meeting is set to conclude today, with investors awaiting Chair Powell’s forward guidance for the rest of 2026. Powell’s tone is expected to shape investor positioning and risk asset behavior in the months ahead.
“I still view oscillation within the $74,000 to $82,000 range as the base case for BTC,” Sun said, citing two conditions needed for a sustained move higher: U.S.-Iran de-escalation and a clear Fed pivot toward easing. Mei pointed to the same catalysts—shipping resuming through the Strait of Hormuz or a rate cut—the latter of which, he noted, remains unlikely while oil stays elevated.
“This round looks more like a periodic recovery under macro pressure rather than the start of a new unilateral uptrend,” Sun said. “It has momentum for bounces, but the overall sustainability is weak.”

“The issue was beyond Aave,” Kulechov wrote. “It was about restoring the whole state of DeFi, avoid contagion and ensuring that the whole ecosystem overcome this incident.
DeFi United started as a practical coordination effort among impacted protocols but evolved into a wider movement. The coalition has released a detailed technical plan to restore full backing for rsETH through staged ETH contributions converted into the token, alongside governance-approved liquidations to recover funds from attacker positions on Aave and other platforms. As of April 28–29, the effort has gathered over $300 million in pledges (roughly 130,000+ ETH), including significant contributions from Lido, Ether.fi, Consensys, Mantle, LayerZero, and personal commitments from Kulechov himself.
Kulechov expressed hope that it becomes “a permanent movement in some shape or form” to continuously support the industry from unexpected events. He also gave special recognition to several individuals and teams who stepped up during the crisis:

When the Kennedy Space Center recently shared this tool again, their pitch was perfect: “This planet can literally spell your name.” And honestly? They weren’t exaggerating. I immediately tried typing out a few words, and seeing standard letters replaced by satellite imagery of Earth’s natural wonders completely blew my mind.
Let me take you through what this tool actually is, the incredible 50-year-old technology behind it, and why I think this is one of the coolest ways to connect with our home planet.
What Exactly is the “Your Name in Landsat” Tool?
Originally launched as part of the “Camp Landsat” virtual event, this interactive web tool lets you type any word or name into a search bar. The system then generates that exact word using real satellite images of Earth’s surface.
Instead of a standard font, your letters are made of:
Curving rivers that perfectly form an “S” or a “C”.Mountain ridges and valleys casting shadows that look just like a “V”.Agricultural fields carved into geometric shapes that mimic an “E”.Coastal lines and glaciers that naturally curve into an “O”.
It’s basically the ultimate cosmic typography. The tool taps into an absolutely massive archive of images collected over decades, scanning the globe to find natural topography that perfectly mimics the English alphabet.
The Science Behind the Art: A 50-Year Legacy
To really appreciate how cool this is, we have to talk about the unsung hero of space observation: the Landsat program.
Jointly managed by NASA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Landsat satellites aren’t new. In fact, they have been quietly watching over us since 1972. For over half a century, these incredible machines have been orbiting Earth, taking continuous snapshots of its surface.
But these aren’t just regular camera phones strapped to a rocket. I was fascinated to learn about how they actually “see” the planet. Landsat uses advanced sensors to capture light far beyond what human eyes can process.

Finding the Hidden Letters in Mother Nature
Creating an entire alphabet out of random planetary geology is no small feat. While researching this, I realized just how much effort went into hunting down these specific formations.
Some letters are surprisingly common in nature. For instance, the system has five different options for a capital “A”. One of my absolute favorites is an “A” formed entirely by the lush, dark green vegetation surrounding Lake Mjøsa in Norway. It’s sharp, distinct, and incredibly beautiful.
However, some lowercase letters are incredibly rare. Mother Nature doesn’t naturally draw a lot of tiny, complex loops. The lowercase “g” was famously difficult to track down. Currently, there is only one example in the entire database: a muddy, highly intricate river bend located deep within the Amazonas region of Brazil.
It makes you wonder—how many other secret messages are hidden in the mountains and rivers of the world, just waiting for the right satellite pass to be discovered?
Beyond the Alphabet: Why Landsat Actually Matters
As much fun as it is to write our names with rivers and mountains, I think it’s crucial to remember why Landsat is up there in the first place. The artistic alphabet is just a happy accident; the real mission is planetary survival.
Landsat is arguably the most important tool we have for tracking how human activity and climate change are altering the globe. Because the archive stretches back over 50 years, it provides an undeniable, visual timeline of our impact.

So, why did NASA bother making a fun little name-generator tool out of such serious scientific data?
If you ask me, it’s all about connection. Space and satellite data can feel very abstract. Reading a report that says “urban footprints have expanded by 20%” doesn’t hit home for everyone. But when you log onto a website and realize that a piece of a Brazilian river forms the same letter you use to spell your own name, it creates an immediate, personal link between you and the planet.
It transforms Earth from a giant, incomprehensible rock into an intimate, shared home. It reminds us that we are part of this massive, interconnected system. Science shouldn’t just live in academic papers; it should be interactive, aesthetic, and sometimes, just plain fun.

Next week, for the first time, we welcome Shanghai-based brand Ficus to the PS showroom on Harley Street.
Founded in 2016, Ficus draws inspiration from classic Western menswear styles, but often presents them with an Eastern sensibility. Simon and I had a chance to meet with the brand’s founders and try on some of their winter collection at the January edition of Pitti; that was a particularly interesting selection and Simon and I both took away their water-repellent ‘Altai’ down jacket.
As Ficus are only available online outside China, I suspect there will be many who won’t have had much exposure to the brand. And while the upcoming trunk show will give London readers the chance to try their spring/summer collection in person before ordering online – with all trunk show orders benefitting from free shipping – I personally find it helpful to know a little about products in advance, just to orientate myself in a brand’s world before arrival.
With that in mind, we thought readers would appreciate a brief overview of some of my picks from the current season.
At the trunk show there will be a range of warm-weather options that would complement most casual wardrobes: single-pleated trousers (£193), a lightweight western shirt (£223) and a vest with frog-closure buttons (£404).
The materials used are good for peak summer – light cotton, seersucker and lots of French linen – and are often pre-washed to give them a soft hand feel.
Ficus have a good eye for colour too. The rust red popover shirt (above, £223) and their blush pink baby-cord shirt jacket (£297) bring pops of colour without ever feeling too dominating or garish.
However, of all the Ficus clothing categories, it’s their outerwear and layering pieces that catch my eye: their offering running the gamut from faithful reproductions of staple pieces to more design-led, but still wearable, iterations.
I’ve highlighted my favourite three below – all paired with the same simple outfit of white tee and washed chinos (the former from PS and the latter the Big Chino from Buck Mason).
In the staples camp is Ficus’s version of a chore jacket: the Five-Pocket ‘Writer’ Jacket, made up in a 12oz washed ecru denim.
We’ve written extensively about chore coats on PS, so I sympathise with any readers who are struggling to choose between the vast array of options on the market. To those people I’d advise focusing on whichever details matter most to you – price, colour, material, style, brand – rather than searching endlessly for the ‘best’ one.
The elements of the ‘Writer’ jacket worthy of note are the patch-flap pocket on the chest (which provides a little more protection to any valuable items kept within it); the contrast corduroy colour (which helps the collar feel softer when popped against the face and adds texture to prevent the jacket from feeling too clinical); adjustable cuffs (for those with slim wrists or a preference for a snugger cuff); and the washed denim (which doesn’t have the ‘break-in’ period often required for more robust workwear versions).
The size I’m wearing here is 48, which – even though I’m more typically a 50 – fits me well for single-layer, summer outfits. On that basis, while your regular size is unlikely to be ill-fitting, I’d advise most readers to size down (something I very rarely suggest).
At £299, the ‘Writer’ jacket represents pretty good value, at a time when some brands are asking close to the £500 mark for a chore.
An adjacent piece, and one that most successfully demonstrates Ficus’s ambition to create a dialogue between Eastern and Western styles is the Shanghai jacket (£560) – complete with mandarin collar and frog buttons.
At first glance, I assumed the cloth was cotton denim. However, Ficus informed me that it’s actually made from a French linen which is woven into denim before being stone washed to give its aged, blueish-grey appearance.
And so, while the jacket looks like it might be heavy, it actually rests very lightly on the body. Similarly, even though it’s the same size (48) and broadly the same cut as the cotton denim ‘Writer’ jacket, the linen denim makes it that much more comfortable to wear as both an outdoor layer and against the skin as a shirt/overshirt replacement.
This jacket is one of my favourite items in the current collection, but I can fully appreciate it won’t be for everyone, not least due to cultural sensitivity. I spoke to the brand about this and while they acknowledged that concern, they added that: “Chinese dress has always evolved through exchange, adaptation and reinterpretation across time. We do not see thoughtful and respectful wear as appropriation in itself. On the contrary, we see it as a form of appreciation and cultural connection.”
If I may speak directly to appreciation and connection, I (to my discredit) knew little about Shanghai’s history, and hadn’t appreciated that the city had a French Concession for nearly a century between 1849 and 1943. No doubt that history informs the “exchange, adaptation and reinterpretation” of ideas that underpin this garment – which clearly blends Chinese tradition with French workwear style.
As always, the PS reader is more than capable of deciding what’s right for them, but I know my cultural horizons have been expanded just a touch by learning a little more about the the history that suffuses this piece.
The last item I really like is the Paracel jacket, a design inspired by vintage fishing jackets with a name borrowed from the Paracel islands – a fishing region in the South China Sea.
The cut is cropped and boxy – a silhouette that would slot seamlessly into PS contributor Alex Natt’s wardrobe. The sleeve (and this seems to be true across a lot of the Ficus outerwear and jackets) is full in the armhole and through the bicep, but tapers neatly into the wrist. The result is a very comfortable fit with a great range of motion – ideal, I’m sure, if you actually wanted to fish in it – without ever being too sloppy or flappy by the hands.
The jacket’s visual impact is enhanced by two acidic-orange zip pouches that can be buttoned onto the sleeves. Much like the Stone Island patches, I can imagine this detail being a design-step too far for PS readers. However, again much like Stone Island, if you don’t like the pouches you can simply unbutton them and secure them inside the hip pockets – which is probably quite a nice way to organise smaller items that could otherwise get lost in the tardis-esque interior.
The cloth, a waterproof nylon in a rich forest green, is finished with a brown faux-suede trim. While I like the contrast offered by the latter, my only reservation is that faux-suede can feel a little cheap, and I wonder if a snuff corduroy trim might have made this jacket exceptional.
Helpfully I need not wonder for too long as this is one of a few items that Ficus is offering on an MTO basis with the option to customise fabric and trims. This service usually carries a 15% surcharge, but for the duration of the PS trunk show Ficus will be waiving that fee, so the jacket will be available for £560.
