Why Ron Howard Never Directed An Episode Of Happy Days – SlashFilm

Ron Howard was five years old when he made his film acting debut in Anatole Litvak’s 1959 Hungarian Revolution drama “The Journey.” A year later, the red-headed scamp got cast as Opie Taylor, the son of Mayberry, North Carolina sheriff Andy Taylor in “The Andy Griffith Show,” which had the effect of turning him into America’s kid brother. Television viewers watched Howard grow up throughout the 1960s, so they felt as though they had a touch of skin in the game when he played recent high-school graduate Steve Bolander in George Lucas’ “American Graffiti.” Then he landed the role of Richie Cunningham in the ABC sitcom “Happy Days,” at which point he seemed like family. Everyone wanted Howard to excel.

If, however, everyone was being honest with themselves, it was hard to see Howard’s acting career lasting much longer than “Happy Days.” He possessed limited range and couldn’t seem to shake his pipsqueak persona. Fortunately, Howard had grown disinterested in acting and had his eyes set on directing. Before getting cast in “Happy Days,” he’d enrolled in film school at the University of Southern California. In fact, Howard nearly returned to USC early in the run of “Happy Days” when the series was getting retooled due to ratings struggles.

While Howard stuck it out on the sitcom until his contract was up, he managed to direct a movie while still shooting the show (1977’s “Grand Theft Auto”) and wasted no time embarking on a full-time filmmaking career once he was free of all “Happy Days” obligations. This worked out exceptionally well for him (he won the Best Director Oscar in 2002 for “A Beautiful World), but you might be surprised to learn that he refused the opportunity to hone his craft by directing a single episode of “Happy Days.”

When Howard appeared on The Smartless podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes in 2020, he revealed that his interest in directing was sparked by his early days on the set of “The Andy Griffith Show.” As he told the trio:

“I was able to be a part of this show and be a part of this process which included the camera operators. At a certain point I realized that the director was the one who kind of got to hang with everybody, got to play with everybody. I just became intrigued.”

By the 1970s, Howard was savvy enough to understand the difference between directing an episode of television and helming, say, “The Graduate.” He desperately wanted to try his hand at the latter, but he did not see the path to Mike Nichols’ masterpiece emanating from directing traffic on a television sitcom. Howard also was respectful of his co-stars’ needs on “Happy Days,” and didn’t want to hurl gunk into a well-oiled machine. Jerry Paris was the go-to helmer on the series, and, according to Howard, he knew better than anyone how to deliver what viewers demanded from the show every week.

Howard’s patience paid off, and while he’s never directed a classic on the level of “The Graduate,” at least we’ve got “EDtv,” and that ain’t poverty!

Dancing On Ice star Dan Edgar has given fans an update on his relationship status amid reflections on a ‘show curse’.

The love life of The Only Way is Essex veteran Dan, who has been part of the scripted reality TV cast since 2015, has come in for plenty of attention on social media and glossy mags.

But now the 34-year-old – who has topped the Dancing On Ice leaderboard alongside pro partner Vanessa James for the last three weekends – has addressed whether he is seeing anyone or not.

Speaking to OK!, Dan admitted his recent on-off relationship with TOWIE cast member Ella Rae Wise appears to be on again.

Opening up about the circumstances that recently drew him and Ella, 24, together again, Dan said earlier this month he’d convinced himself to ‘go for it’.

“We seem to gravitate towards each other,” Dan claimed. He went on: “We were on and off last year, then filmed the TOWIE Christmas special and ended up enjoying each other’s company again. We thought, ‘Why not give it another go?’ I’ve got this habit of over-analysing everything, but I just thought, ‘Go for it.’”

Dan addresses marriage rumours

Asked whether marriage and babies could be on the cards, Dan insisted it’s “a bit early days for all that”.

He also noted how the pair spent 2024 “going round in circles” but “this is the longest we’ve been on track”.

Dan added: “I just want to see where that leads. But I do think a lot of Ella.”

But Dan also indicated he could understand why relationships form on DOI when the topic of a ‘show curse’ was raised.

He commented: “You spend a lot of time together, but it depends on the vibe of the couple you’re in. Me and Vanessa have developed a brilliant friendship. But I can see how it happens in certain situations. This year, it just feels like everyone’s good friends.”

Back in the earliest days of his TOWIE tenure, Dan dated Kate Wright. All these years on, she is now Mrs Rio Ferdinand.

But even though Rio’s brother Anton is also among the DOI contestants, Dan insists he hasn’t bumped into his ex as she supports her brother-in-law from the rinkside audience.

He said if he did, it would “be cool”.

Before that, a fan captured him in a few photos (above) at a gun show selling guns, and critics jumped all over that. So, Maddie Brown Brush describes her dad as chasing after get-rich-quick schemes.

But it sounds like his efforts proved futile. Still, he did jump on the chance to do the Sister Wives series, which spawned celebrity status for his entire family.

But we also know from Gwendlyn Brown that Kody and Robyn spend way beyond their means. So, it seems no matter how much he makes, he still has money problems.

Many fans think Kody’s mindset of get-rich-quick may have prompted him to jump at the chance to bring Sister Wives to the screen. Still, he claimed it was another mission that pushed him to go on TV.

But many fans believe that raking in the almighty dollar also played a part for Kody. Yet, he maintains he wanted to show the world that polygamy wasn’t the evil lifestyle flashing in the headlines a decade or so back.

So, Maddie Brown Brush reveals that Kody and his Sister Wives family were broke for a long time while raising a brood of children. Then, when the Sister Wives show brings in more money than they’ve ever made, Gwen suggests her father is in the red due to his and Robyn’s frivolous spending habits.

With that said, it sounds like no matter how much Kody manages to rake in, it still isn’t enough. As Maddie Brown Brush says, he was once broke. But Gwen reminds the viewers of this TLC series that even as money came their way, Kody Brown and Robyn Brown don’t live within their means.

There exists a class of games I call indie indie games. They are like Gone Home, games not for the average player, but a certain group of player to slobber over. The Little Moon is in that class. It has retro pixel graphics, a nonsensical cutesy plot and really boring game play. I guess I’m describing Undertale more than Gone Home, but the same idea applies. These games are not for the average player, but for a specific kind of player to fawn over.

The Little Moon is an game in early access somewhere(Britain I think) and it shows. You’re this girl in the little universe where you fly among planets using a hook to grab things, then refine those things into jet pack fuel, The you jump and use your jet pack to fly between planets. On the planets, you walk around and talk to things and get quests, like finding a tulip or talking to crabs. I got as far as having to find this octopus’s home and quit, never to return. Not far at all, but enough to be utterly bored. Here a video of an early section:

Early access is tricky. I understand why developers do it, it funds development while developing the game. However, you need a game engaging enough to keep you coming back for more. The Little Moon is not that game. I played it for fifteen minutes and ran screaming. What is it? What’s the purpose? Where’s the fun? This is a game for a certain group of people that are not me. And that’s fine, but I’m not sure who this is for. As its early access and I cannot even download in the US, I’m not even going to give it a verdict or a standard table at the bottom. Just know when It does come, it better have a lot more than this to show for it.

Overall: The Little Moon is an early access game that is for a very specific audience to fawn over, but there’s nothing here for anyone else.

Meredith Gaudreau Thanks Late Husband Johnny in Son’s Birthday Tribute

Late hockey star Johnny Gaudreau’s wife, Meredith Gaudreau, is celebrating their son’s 1st birthday.

“Happy 1st Birthday to our baby boy! We love you so much, Baby Johnny! Already so strong and so special,” Meredith wrote via Instagram on Saturday, February 22. “‘I can’t believe you gave me a boy,’ is all John said over and over again when baby Johnny arrived. I couldn’t stop staring at how happy John was — one of the best moments of my life.”

She added, “Baby Johnny you are Mommy’s rock and Noa’s best friend. All of Daddy’s accomplishments don’t compare to the pride and joy he had in being your father.”

Johnny, who died in August 2024, and Meredith shared daughter Noa, 2, and son Johnny, 12 months. Meredith is also currently pregnant with the couple’s third baby.

“I can’t wait to give you a little sibling soon! Everything for you, Baby Johnny,” Meredith continued in her social media upload. “We love you so much 💙!”

Meredith closed her note with an emotional message to her late spouse, writing, “Thank you, John, for giving me our boy. Thank you for our family. Crazy first year but today we celebrate.”

Meredith took the kids to watch a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey game — the team that Johnny played for ahead of his death — on Saturday. During the matchup, the crowd serenaded Johnny Jr. with a rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

“Thank you @bluejacketsnhl for helping make Johnny’s 1st birthday so special,” Meredith wrote via her Instagram Stories later on Saturday. “I know baby Johnny’s dad appreciates this and is proud of the big win!” (The Blue Jackets beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1.)

Johnny and his younger brother, Matthew Gaudreau, were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver in a biking accident last summer. They were 31 and 29, respectively.

In addition to Meredith and their children, Johnny is survived by the brothers’ parents and their two sisters. Matthew is also survived by his wife, Madeline Gaudreau, and their infant son, Tripp.

Madeline also shared a birthday tribute to her young nephew on Saturday.

“Happy Birthday Johnny, your Uncle Matty loves you sooooo much,” Madeline wrote via her Instagram Stories. “And Aunty Madeline loves you so much.”

Madeline gave birth to Tripp in December 2024, four months after Meredith revealed her current pregnancy during the brothers’ funeral.

“We’re actually a family of five,” Meredith said in her September 2024 eulogy. “I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby. A total surprise, but again, John was beaming and so excited. I was so nervous because this was, again, a total surprise. But his reaction was just immediately kissing me and hugging me even though I was driving the car. After the initial excitement sank in, every time he looked at me, he would say, ‘You’re nuts, you know that? Three kids?’”

To those unknown, Emma Frost is an enemy of the X-Men and has a legendary rivalry with Professor X, Wolverine, and their team in the comics. Emma Frost was also featured in Fortnite Chapter 4 as a boss NPC and a character on the island.

Players are hoping her appearance in Marvel Rivals also features an ability where she can turn her body into diamonds and shield herself from incoming fire. However, sadly her abilities and kit haven’t been leaked as of yet.

Kouyate – Sarah Jane Avory is still working on an Ultima-style RPG for the C64! [UPDATE]

Remember when I announced that one of the best homebrew developer’s of Sarah Jane Avory, was working on a new Commodore 64 RPG that is inspired by the classic of Ultima? Well I’ve just looked through the Commodore 64/128 Facebook group, and have just found out that that not only is this Commodore 64 game now called ‘ Kouyate ‘, but there’s been some new footage teased with additional in game music by @nordischsound.

Here’s the latest from Sarah, who was also behind games such as Soul Force, Zeta Wing, Briley Witch Chronicles. “Ever since the 80s I’ve always wanted to create an Ultima-style RPG for the C64, so I’ve started creating one! This is the 5th video clip, and shows some combat, showing melee weapons, ranged weapons, a few NPC’s, graphics designs by @mementomoree.bsky.social and finally new music by @nordischsound.

UPDATE : If you’re looking for the latest news on this rather awesome looking CRPG, then make sure to check out the two new teaser videos that have been added to the article above. While I’m unsure when the game will see a final release, she was quoted as saying for one of the videos however “My new #C64 #RPG: for those that like pirates, here’s another YouTube video showing the WIP pirate’s town, plus a little bit of sailing”.

And that’s all I know so far, but as soon as the game is worthy of yet another big announcement, I will let you all know 🙂
