Pixelverse Brings Crypto Memes to Life with MemeBattle Game

Cyberpunk-themed game ecosystem Pixelverse is launching a tactical deck-building game ‘MemeBattle’ to incorporate popular cryptocurrency memes as playable characters.

The game will debut in January, featuring a roster of meme mascots from multiple blockchain projects. In the game, players will compete in strategic battles by assembling squads of characters inspired by well-known internet and crypto culture.

The game will launch on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 platform, chosen for its scalability, low transaction costs and built-in wallet integration to create a more accessible experience for players.

    What is MemeBattle?

MemeBattle revolves around creating squads of characters inspired by cryptocurrency memes and battling opponents to earn rewards.

The game’s initial lineup includes mascots from Base projects such as Brett, Toshi, Dog in Me, Keyboard Cat, and Mochi. Other blockchain-based characters, including Pudgy Penguins, Turbo, and Mew, will also be featured.

Whilst the game is categorized as a deck-builder, the characters will not be represented as traditional cards. Pixelverse has not disclosed the exact gameplay format but stated that it will move away from conventional card mechanics.

    A Growing Blockchain Portfolio

Pixelverse gained recognition earlier this year with PixelTap, a Telegram mini-game that attracted a wide audience. MemeBattle is the next step in its development pipeline, designed to expand the company’s presence in blockchain-based gaming.

The project has received funding from Gate.io’s $50 million Meme Fund, which supports initiatives focused on meme and community-driven content in the crypto space. Additionally, investments from Delphi Ventures and Mechanism Capital have helped fund its development.

Launching with 10 characters, MemeBattle aims to combine elements of internet culture with tactical gameplay. Whilst more details about the game will likely be released closer to its debut, it signals continued experimentation in the intersection of crypto, gaming, and cultural trends.

‘Ragnarok: Landverse’ Expanding to Ethereum Gaming Network Ronin – Decrypt

‘Ragnarok: Landverse’ Expanding to Ethereum Gaming Network Ronin – Decrypt

Ragnarok Landverse, a blockchain-enhanced massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in the classic Ragnarok Online franchise, will launch on Ethereum sidechain gaming network Ronin in early 2025.

The Ronin version, dubbed Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis, is set to deploy to Ronin after previously soft-launching on BNB Chain. Developer Maxion, in partnership with Ragnarok publisher Gravity, said that the game has already amassed some $15 million worth of NFT sales ahead of the Ronin expansion, with over 400,000 players to date.

Ragnarok Landverse is a free-to-play PC and Android game that features similar gameplay to the original Ragnarok Online, an influential and popular MMORPG launched in 2002. However, this version incorporates blockchain elements such as mineable resources and token rewards.

The Genesis version launching on Ronin is considered a “fresh start” for the game, which means that assets from other Landverse servers won’t be transferable initially. However, these servers are planned to migrate to Ronin at a later date.

Zentry, Maxion’s parent company, will also maintain a validator node on the Ronin network as part of this expansion. The company describes itself as building a “metagame ecosystem” of interconnected Web3 games. Zentry rebranded from its previous name of GuildFi back in April.

Landverse will be the second Ragnarok game to launch on Ronin, following the debut of Ragnarok: Monster World. That mobile game took inspiration from Supercell’s popular Clash Royale, with two players commanding teams of creatures and dropping them into battle to try and be the first to topple the opponent’s base.

Ronin is a prominent gaming network in the Ethereum ecosystem. It’s the home to major crypto games like Pixels and Axie Infinity, the latter game developed by Sky Mavis, the studio that created the network. Since launching with Axie Infinity, the network has gradually expanded to include even more games from external developers.

Pre-registration is now open for Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis, with players able to connect their Ronin digital wallets for potential rewards ahead of the launch.

Another blockchain game in the Ragnarok universe was announced in November by DeLabs Games, with plans to launch it via the Telegram messaging app in Q1 2025.

Everything We Know About 2025 Superman Movie: Cast and More

The DC movie universe will return to their roots by bringing the Man of Steel back to the big screen in Superman.

The movie — originally titled Superman: Legacy — was announced in January 2023, just one month after Henry Cavill shared that he would no longer be portraying the beloved superhero.

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone,” he wrote via Instagram in December 2022. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”

Cavill made his first appearance as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel and went on to appear in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, 2017’s Justice League (and the Zack Snyder cut released in 2021) before making a final cameo as Clark Kent in 2022’s Black Adam.

Meet the new Superman. David Corenswet has been cast as Clark Kent in Superman: Legacy. Director James Gunn confirmed reports that Corenswet had been cast opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane on Tuesday, June 27. “Accurate! (They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people),” Gunn tweeted at the time. The actor replaces […]

In June 2023, it was announced that David Corenswet would be taking over the role as the superhero with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane. Filming on the project began in early 2024 and was finished that summer.

When Is ‘Superman’ Going to Be Released?

Director and writer Gunn announced in January 2023 that the new movie is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

“This is being written by me, I’m in the middle of it and I’m having a great day doing it,” Gunn said in a YouTube video posted by DC at the time.

Who Is In the ‘Superman’ Cast?

Corenswet will replace Cavill as Superman while Brosnahan will replace Amy Adams as Lois Lane. “I have big shoes to fill,” Brosnahan exclusively told Us Weekly in July 2024. “But this Superman is being made with a lot of love and everybody is excited about the responsibility of carrying on this iconic tradition and being a part of this canon. And so, I look to those who came before, I’m in awe of them and so I’m excited to be able to take the torch.”

Other cast members include Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord.

Alan Tudyk was also announced to be joining the cast in an undisclosed role.

While not much has been revealed about the plot of the 2025 film, the cochair of DC Studios Safran told The Hollywood Reporter in January 2023 that Superman will not be an “origin story.”

From Arrow to The Flash to Gotham Knights, The CW is known for its prolific selection of shows based on various DC comics. The network originally kicked off its superhero content by introducing Arrow in 2012. Stephen Amell was cast in the role of Oliver Queen — who went on to become the Green Arrow. After […]

“It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” Safran explained to the outlet at the time. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned.”

Although Corenswet is younger than Cavill, Gunn clarified that he isn’t looking to make a “young Superman” film. “I was never making a ‘young Superman’ movie, just a Superman movie!” he wrote via Threads in August 2023.

What Is the ‘Superman’ Script Like?

Brosnahan attended the 2024 SAG Awards in February, giving Variety the first teaser of the Superman script.

“It was pretty amazing,” Brosnahan, who was nominated at the ceremony for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, said of the first table read. “Some of us met for the first time. Some of us got to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud.”

She added: “As with all of these films, there’s a lot of action sequences and things. So to hear the pacing of the film and to get to hear these characters occupied by the actors who play them is really fun. It’s also a great group. You can’t ask for more than that when doing something like this.”

What Happened to the Movie’s Title?

Originally, the film was set to be called Superman: Legacy. However, when Gunn announced in February 2024 that production on the film had officially started, he had a major update about the movie’s title.

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be — coincidentally and unplanned — Superman’s birthday,” he announced via Instagram at the time. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

What Does David Corenswet Look Like as Superman?

Gunn shared the first look at the new star all suited up in May 2024. Clark Kent looks anguished as he adjusts his boots and dons a suit that has clearly been worn in battle. Meanwhile, a giant ball of pink and blue light in the background makes it clear that Metropolis is in danger.

Has a Trailer for ‘Superman’ Been Released?

DC fans rejoiced after seeing the first official Superman teaser in December 2024. The trailer, set to an electric guitar version of John Williams’ famous Superman “Main Theme,” the preview gave glimpses of the titular hero in several jaw-dropping fight scenes and in his life working with Lois at The Daily Planet.

In addition to seeing several characters in costume, fans also got a full look at Superman’s adorable pup, Krypto. “Take me home,” he instructs the super-powered pet in the teaser, holding out his cape for Krypto to grab onto.

Though the trailer didn’t offer many plot details, it appears the people of Metropolis aren’t the biggest fans of the caped hero. In one shot, a man throws a can at Superman’s head as he walks into a Stagg Industries building, where he is subsequently joined by Guy Gardner (a.k.a. Green Lantern), Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific.

Nintendo of America are Complete Hypocrites!

Nintendo of America are Complete Hypocrites!

Warning: The editorial about Nintendo of America contains pixelated nudity. May very well be NSFW!

Nintendo of America somehow have become censorious. Neptunia Riders Vs Dogoos is cutting a swimsuit DLC for Switch. A Neptunia Trilogy has been cancelled in the US and Europe but is releasing in Japan. To be honest, I could care less if Nintendo censors now. It’s their platform, they can allow what they want. The problem is that a game released yesterday, 12/19/24, on the US Nintendo Switch eShop. A game called Sugoi Girls: Enchanting Elf.

You already knew who made this!

Yes, its everyone’s favorite purveyor of AI-generated nudie games, Pakotime! Nintendo of America has allowed them to release a game a week on the Switch no questions asked. And they are all the same identical game, just with a different theme.

Nintendo of America doesn't care about Pakotime's release schedule.
They used to release bi-monthly, they’re now weekly!

And do you know what these games contain? Nudity:

      Nintendo of America allows this!
      Pixelated for your protection!

I showed that image to drive home a point. Nintendo of America are hypocrites. Yes, Neptunia bad, AI-generated trash games good. I don’t know what Nintendo’s new content guidelines are, but I’m damn sure Sugoi Girls: Enchanting Elf does not meet that criteria. But Nintendo does not care, for some reason. Pakotime releases one game with nudity a week, and doesn’t get a peep out of Nintendo, but god forbid Neptunia girls wear bathing suits.

      Not good in Nintendo’s eyes.

I don’t know what else to say. Nintendo of America and really Nintendo in general are being hypocrites here. And its not just Neptunia. It’s Tokyo Clanpool by EastAsiaSoft too, among others. Nintendo has said nothing and won’t say anything, they never do. But the fact that Pakotime can run wild on Switch, while publishers like EastAsiaSoft have to censor risque titles, is appalling. If Nintendo of America were to end Pakotime’s reign of crap on the eShop, that’d be one thing. But I highly suspect they will be releasing a game a week for the far foreseeable future What a shame!

Kelly Clarkson Hurls Clear Shade at Ex-Husband in New Music Teaser

Kelly Clarkson Hurls Clear Shade at Ex-Husband in New Music Teaser

Kelly Clarkson has seemingly gotten ex-husband Brandon Blackstock a present for Christmas:

        Some major shade.

In promotion of her album “When Christmas Comes Around… Again” on Wednesday, the first-ever American Idol winner posted an “official album visualizer” via YouTube.

This video featured four stockings hanging over a fireplace.

Brandon Blackstock and Kelly Clarkson attend the 25th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards at Barker Hangar on January 12, 2020 in Santa Monica, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Two of the stockings depict the names of the artist and Blackstock’s kids — daughter River, 10, and son Remington, 8 — while another read, “Mom.”

So far, so good and normal, right?

The fourth, as you can see below, is printed with the word “Nope.”

        Not very subtle, is it?

        (Kelly Clarkson/YouTube)

For those in need of a refresher, Clarkson and Blackstock were married for seven years before parting ways in 2020.

When their divorce was finalized in 2022, the singer was granted primary custody of their two children.

Things got pretty ugly at various points, though, because Blackstock also served as his then-wife’s manager under his dad Narvel Blackstock’s company, Starstruck Management Group.

Shortly after the talk show host filed for divorce, Starstruck sued Clarkson for alleged unpaid commissions and an apparent breach of her agreement.

The singer countersued, eventually winning a $2.6 million legal ruling against her ex in 2023 after a California labor commissioner ruled that he had overstepped his managerial role when securing four of her business deals.

In short, according to Clarkson, her former husband stole from her.

Earlier this year, Clarkson filed a new case… accusing Blackstock and his father’s firm of violating state labor rules. In May, the exes quietly settled this lawsuit.

Clarkson has gone after Blackstock in similarly passive aggressive ways before.

During a performance on her self-titled talk show in March 2023, for example, Clarkson altered the lyrics of Gayle’s “ABCDEFU” to seemingly reference Brandon and his dad.

“Forget you and your dad and the fact that you got half / And my broken heart, turn that shit into art,” she sang.

Relatedly, Clarkson has not dated publicly since splitting from the talent manager … and her children like it that way, she said previously.

“They constantly bring it up: ‘Please, we don’t want you to be with anybody else,’” Clarkson told KSOT 103.5 listeners in November. “They’re young, so it’s hard to picture their mom with someone else other than their dad.”

Mary Berry issues heartbreaking plea after sudden death of her son

Mary Berry issues heartbreaking plea after sudden death of her son

Food journalist and chef Dame Mary Berry has made a plea to the British public to check in with their bereaved loved ones this Christmas after losing her son.

Festive periods can be strange after a loved one passes, and loneliness can result. The most important time to contact anyone bereaved is a few weeks after the funeral, she says.

Mary Berry urges people to check in on bereaved loved ones this Christmas after death of son

Speaking to MailOnline, foodie and national icon Mary said it’s vital to continue supporting friends and family members long after their period of bereavement starts.

And especially at times of year when they might be most acutely aware of their loss, such as Christmas.

Dame Mary’s son William died in 1989 in a car accident. He was just 19 years old at the time.

She says she learned from her experiences “how important it is to communicate or to talk with people who have lost one of their family members or a friend”.

Mary adds: “And not to walk down the street and cross to the other side of the road, but to go and just say something and try and remember something, a situation that you remember – how skillful they were, and what they won here – to get them to talk.”

Relax about whether or not you’re able to attend the relevant funeral, she says. What’s more important is the care you show in the weeks afterwards.

What happened to Mary Berry’s son William?

During an episode of Gyles Brandreth’s podcast Rosebud, Mary explained the circumstances surrounding her son William’s death.

“He asked if he could borrow a sports car,” she said. “Which he was insured for. And I said ‘You ask your dad.’

“And he just drove too fast, which was so unlike him.”

“William was the one that you could rely on,” Mary explained. “When the phone rang after he was killed, everybody said ‘I’m so sorry to hear about Thomas,’ because Thomas was our wild one.”

Mary and her husband Paul Hunnings married in 1966 and have three children together: Thomas, William and Annabel.

Mary added: “I knew when the policemen came through door. I remember saying to him, ‘It must be an awful thing for you to tell us all.’”

She said she was “immensely lucky” to have her husband.

          YouTube video player

“I have other friends who’ve had tragedies and the husband and wife argue,” she went on. “Or don’t comfort each other.

“We just felt fortunate to still have Thomas and Annabel. People were very, very kind.”

And her fans came out in with words of encouragement, condolence and support.

“We had 400 letters,” she said. “I replied to them over the months.”

Mary is 89 now. She has published more than 75 cookery books. Her mum died at the age of 105, in 2011.

Transak Increases Accessibility To Memecoins By Listing 11 New Tokens

          In Brief

Transak adds eleven new memecoins to its platform, including PNUT, WIF, and GOAT, now offering one of the largest selections available for purchase across on-ramps.

Transak Increases Accessibility To Memecoins By Listing 11 New Tokens

Web3 payments infrastructure provider, Transak announced the addition of several popular memecoins to its platform, including PNUT, WIF, GOAT, and eight others. This move highlights Transak’s ongoing support for the growing cultural cryptocurrency phenomenon.

Previously, Transak has supported well-known meme coins such as DOGE, SHIB, PEPE, and BONK. With the inclusion of 11 more meme coins, Transak now offers one of the largest selections of memecoins available for purchase across various on-ramps.

“Meme coins have proven that culture and community can do good with the right tools. At Transak, we stand behind the positive impact of meme coins’ cultural phenomenon and understand their relevance as an entry point into Web3 for many,” said Carlo de Luca Gabrielli, Global Director of Sales at Transak, in a written statement. “By listing 11 new meme coins, we hope to give our users the option to participate in the crypto cultural ride that might pave the way for mass adoption of this revolutionary technology,” he added.

Transak recognizes that memecoins have evolved beyond just jokes. They have become important entry points into Web3 for millions of people, demonstrating how culture and cryptocurrency can intersect to create tangible impact. At first glance, memecoins might seem simple—featuring quirky names, viral stories, and internet humor. However, a deeper look reveals communities that drive change, platforms that offer utility, and catalysts for positive action.

For years, on-ramps have served as essential gateways into Web3, helping newcomers transition into the world of cryptocurrencies. However, these platforms have traditionally focused on well-established blue-chip cryptocurrencies, often sidelining memecoins despite their popularity.

While this cautious approach was understandable, it has left many potential users who wish to start using cryptocurrencies through memecoins feeling frustrated. Transak aims to change this narrative. By listing a few of the most popular memecoins for 2024 and into 2025, it is demonstrating its commitment to embracing the growing influence of the memecoin market, which has become too important to ignore.

Transak has added eleven new memecoins to its platform, including Peanut the Squirrel (PNUT), DOGWIFHAT (WIF), Floki Inu (FLOKI), Book of Meme (BOME), Neiro (NEIRO), Goatseus Maximus (GOAT), MemeFi (MEMEFI), Meme (МЕМЕ), Moo Deng (MOODENG), Popcat (POPCAT), and BRETT.

For memecoin enthusiasts, this means they can now easily access their favorite tokens without unnecessary steps. Through Transak, users can purchase these coins directly using fiat payment options such as credit cards, debit cards, bank transfers, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

          What Is Transak?

Transak is one of the leading Web3 payments infrastructure providers, known for its global compliance and extensive reach, serving over 8.3 million users in more than 160 countries. The platform supports over 350 platforms, enabling the seamless buying and selling of digital assets through its API-driven fiat-to-crypto on/off-ramp, non-fungible token (NFT) checkout, and a range of other solutions that streamline KYC processes, compliance, payment methods, and customer support.

Recently, Transak has integrated the non-custodial wallet Phantom. This collaboration aims to simplify the user experience when interacting with digital assets, contributing to the wider adoption of Web3 technologies through the combined expertise of both entities.

Unwilted Founder Liz Carter Shares Her Holiday Party Must-Haves

Seasons greetings! Floral designer and Unwilted founder Liz Carter sat down with ET to share her holiday party must-haves and tips.

For starters, the flower expert says having her botanical paper flower bouquets on display can help set the jolly mood.

“Unwilted arrangements elevate holiday tables with timeless beauty and effortless elegance. They don’t compete with food or decor, as they’re designed to complement a wide range of table settings. Best of all, there’s no need to worry about them wilting before the last toast. They’re as enduring as your holiday memories,” she noted.

            Unwilted/Instagram

And her realistic looking hand-cut petals and leaves made from Italian crepe paper have even been painted, shaped and constructed to embrace the Christmas spirit.

“This season will be full of rich, jewel-tones like emerald, ruby, and sapphire paired with metallic gold and bronze. … Combining traditional holiday greens with unexpected pops of blush or deep burgundy will also be on-trend, and expect to see some wicked combinations of pink, burgundy and green,” she spilled.

In addition to displaying stunning centerpieces at your celebration, the entrepreneur likes to provide a comfortable and relaxed vibe to guests.

            Unwilted/Instagram

“Creating a welcoming atmosphere is all about simple touches like mood-setting music, cozy lighting, and an easy going approach. For food, opt for a mix of crowd-pleasers and festive treats, and consider a signature cocktail to tie into your theme. To make the evening memorable, encourage fun interactions with themed dress codes, simple games, or a photo corner,” she recommended.

As for gifts, Carter believes meaningful presents are the way to go.

“This year, I’m drawn to gifts that bring comfort and inspiration, like cozy blankets, artisanal candles, or blank journals for jotting down that next great idea. Supporting small businesses is also important to me, so I’m seeking out handcrafted items and unique finds from local makers,” she said.

I’m comfortable admitting that I’m biased towards Age of Empires, especially III; and now we have the Definitive Edition.

More than most games, this one defined my afternoons when I was younger; similar to those old nostalgic Cartoon Network games. Get home from school, fire up AoE III, and dive right into a skirmish.

Teenage Me was the embodiment of a beginner to the RTS genre. If I could hack it as a successful overlord, you could too. It’s pretty simple: collect resources, spawn villagers and troops, and conquer all you see.

If you play a custom game, you can decide whether the winning condition is an all-out war victory, whether the win goes to the empire to build a wonder, or something else.

            8 Northgard

It’s Really Cold And Dangerous Here

            Northgard gameplay start screen

Nordic winters are never a picnic, but Northgard at least makes exploration and survival fun. This one feels similar to Age of Empires; it just doesn’t take itself as seriously.

You’ll still need to gather resources, battle other clans, and level up your society, but the visuals are cuter. What isn’t cute is the real-time sense of urgency as winter approaches; have you done enough?

Major brownie points for multiple difficulties, game modes—of which Ragnarök is one—and super-intuitive winning conditions. It’s easy enough to grasp, and complex enough to keep you hooked while you learn how it all works.

If you like Vikings and the whole Norse feel, there are tons of amazing Viking-themed games to explore.

            7 Bloons Tower Defense 6

            Whimsical Ways To Outsmart Balloons

            BloonsTD6 Level 7

I know, I know; Bloons TD 6 is a tower defense game; it says so right on the box.

I’ll have you know I found this adorable tower defense game to have more than enough essential RTS mechanics to qualify as a decent entry point into the genre.

Resource prioritization—in the form of monkey soldiers, weapons, monkey money, and XP—and positioning are key skills if you want to succeed in this game.

It’s adorable but deceptively tricky as you smash your way through to higher levels. It’s surprisingly tricky to try and outsmart balloons; they multiply, heal, come with built-in defenses, and are generally pesky. Don’t knock this one if you haven’t tried it.

            6 Command and Conquer

            Classic Base-Building Warfare

Command & Conquer Red Alert Home Base

Ah, the nostalgia; yet another title that defined my younger years. This is the remaster, of course, but the essentials remain the same; they are just dressed up a little nicer.

This is a must-play mix of fast-paced balls-to-the-wall action and timeless base-building mechanics.

10 Best Strategy Games On Nintendo Switch, Ranked

The Nintendo Switch may not be your first destination for strategy games, but there are some great options on the console!

Spamming tanks across the screen still holds a certain satisfaction, and I’ve missed the campy cutscenes. I always reach for Red Alert, but Command and Conquer has a title for every kind of RTS player.

It’s one of the more iconic strategy titles for newcomers. This is also a solid way to get into war games; Command and Conquer opened so many doors for me.

            5 Company of Heroes 2

            Immersive and Realistic WWII Combat

Company of Heroes II opening onslaught against Germany

World War II, much like The Great War before it, changed society irrevocably.

With a much more serious tone right off the bat, Company of Heroes gives you the inside track on battlefield strategies in the Second World War and doesn’t let you overlook the gravity of each decision.

It’s a good starter because of the slower pace; you have time to learn the ropes. If you’re not a fan of RTS and prefer a turn-based strategy, this could be fun for you, too; it’s an RTS that gives you time to think, plan, and strategize.

This is an awesome stepping stone to more complex titles and well worth the playthrough.

            4 Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II

In A Galaxy Far Far Away

            Battlefleet Gothic Main Menu

This is another one for those who like a slow-burn playthrough. Armada II shoots you into space for a Gothic sci-fi battle with huge hulking spaceships and epic galactic combat.

It has a slower, more deliberate pace, so it’s a kinder way to experience RTS. Take your time, make your decisions, and evaluate your options.

In the grim darkness of the far future there are only badass shooters

It’s much less overwhelming than other titles that shove you straight in, but it’s super immersive and lets you dip your toes into the Warhammer universe.

This is a niche pick, but it’s one worth exploring if you want a taste of real-time strategy from a different perspective.

            3 Ashes of the Singularity

            Conflict On The Grandest Scale

Ashes of the Singularity Unit Upgrades

I don’t have to love a game to respect it. Ashes of the Singularity is unapologetically massive, throwing battles at a scale that makes most RTS games feel tiny. I prefer to command individual units; here, you’ll command entire armies. It’s a shift of perspective, but a valuable one if you want to fully explore RTS.

Marketplaces are rife with good games with bad opening levels, but this one starts badly in another way. It’s not a welcoming game; it’s an assault on beginners. However, I included it because it forces you to think strategically on a new level and scale.

I’m impressed by the four separate episodes and multiple scenarios, but I could do without the near-endless info dump from Haalee—I see the benefit, though; info is good for beginners. There’s definitely a lot to unpack in this game.

Give the others a shot, then take this one for a spin. It’s a solid springboard for any curiosity about the grander side of RTS. Who knows, you may even grow to appreciate its ambition.

            2 They are Billions

            Hordes And Hordes And Hordes

Zombie attack in They Are Billions

I don’t usually let strategy games get under my skin; this one does it anyway.

Confession time: I’m genuinely terrified of zombies. This game is so full of them that it makes my skin crawl. They truly are billions. You’ll want to balance offense and airtight defenses, and even the tiniest misstep could contribute to the downfall of your colony.

It’s another RTS that isn’t forgiving in the least, but it teaches the value of planning ahead. The fact that Nightmare, Brutal, and Apocalypse are three separate levels of difficulty and that there are four ranks before those should tell you exactly how unforgiving this game gets.

It’s not one of the best zombie games in existence—although I’d never put “best” and “zombie” together like that in a sentence—but there’s a sick brilliance in how nerve-wracking it is.

The endless zombie hordes will either keep you glued to your screen or huddled in the corner of a room, hyperventilating into a brown paper bag. Either way, it’s a good time.

            1 Iron Harvest

Rewriting 1920s History With Diesel Mechs

            iron-harvest-2.jpg

Dieselpunk mechs should absolutely have a place in the RTS genre, and Iron Harvest makes that happen.

This title is more approachable than a few of the others; it eases you in slowly with an interesting mix of conventional infantry and mech units.

Here, you’re not spamming units; you need to consider positioning very carefully; the trick is in countering your opponent’s moves.

It’s steeped in an alternate-history setting, rich and immersive. If you’ve got loads of time to sink into a properly good RTS, this is it, at least after you have played all the Age of Empires titles.

NFTs Reborn – More Art, Less Speculation

NFTs Reborn – More Art, Less Speculation

Three years ago, the digital economy and the art world experienced one of the most extraordinary crazes in recent history as NFTs (nonfungible tokens) skyrocketed in popularity and value.

These unique digital assets became both a financial and cultural phenomenon, with wealthy individuals and major organizations investing millions into a new market that promised to be both widely innovative and exclusive.

NFT’s boom was largely driven by the rising value of cryptocurrencies. However, the NFT market and digital art sector weren’t the only industries experiencing a transformative era as a result of the rising adoption of crypto; so too were online casinos. Many online crypto casinos like Dis casino gained momentum due to the rising value of crypto. At these online casinos, players enjoy enhanced anonymity, faster payouts, and elevated security measures, while using the communication benefits of the Discord platform. With the resurrection of NFTs, it’s even possible to create NFT slots, NFT poker, and NFT whatnots at some iGaming websites.

While the NFT craze is not at the same level as what it once was, the market is experiencing a resurgence of sorts.

            The Rise of NFTs

Davis referred to the events of 2021 as utter mania and added to that statement with a quippy remark about how manias are also fun.

The moment that the world began to realize the enormous potential of nonfungible tokes came when the former head of digital art at Christie’s, Noah Davis, facilitated an NFT sale of Mike Winklemann’s (also known as Beeple) digital artwork Everydays: The First 5000 Days for $69.3 million with the crypto Ether.

Winklemann’s landmark sale put NFTs on the map and catapulted these unique digital assets into the mainstream market, arousing interest from all sorts of individuals, not just art enthusiasts.

NFT collectors went as far as spending $230 million on NBA Video Highlights that were made into unique digital files, while another anonymous collector bid $560,000 for an NFT on a column about NFTs written by a New York Times reporter.

Another phenomenon in the NFT world during its surge in 2021 was the considerable amount of people, generally young males, who were swept up in the craze to purchase and sell NFT apes from popular NFT collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club and Pudgy Pidgeon. These collections were made up of CG (computer-generated) artworks of cartoonlike apes and sold for anything from tens of thousands to millions of dollars each on online NFT marketplaces like Open Sea.

Owners of Bored Ape NFTs made these digital artworks their online avatars, which in turn symbolized their memborship to an exclusive club that offers these collectors exciting perks such as access to ApeFest, which featured a star-studded line-up with the likes of Chris Rock and The Strokes performing at the exclusive event.

During the peak of the NFT craze, many celebrities like Jimmy Falon and Paris Hilton showcased their Bored Ape digital artworks on The Tonight Show, further supercharging the craze. This led to Yuga Labs’, a community member of the ApeCoin, reaching a value of $4 billion, which was on par with Disney’s recent acquisition of LucasFilms, which would see mega franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones now under Disney’s ownership.

The Decline of the NFT Market

Fast forward to 2024 and the NFT market has not managed to regain its same value as it did a few years ago. Zeke Faux, the author of Number Go Up: Inside Crypto’s Wild Rise and Staggering Fall, took this sentiment to extreme lengths and even commented that the NFT space is dead.

The main reason behind his view is that the NFT trend was largely dependent on the soaring value of cryptocurrency. However, despite the crypto market bouncing back after a two-year slump and reaching record highs, the NFT market has failed to regain its previous hype and has experienced a drop in cultural relevance.

There is no doubt that NFTs had significant cultural relevance when the market was peaking; however, much of its initial enthusiasm from investors was backed by financial speculation rather than solid evidence of a sustainable market. The massive spikes in values for cryptocurrencies like Ether only fueled the craze, as the market could be likened to a modern-day gold rush. Promises of wealth and the pursuit of profit undermined the genuine interest or underlying value of the digital art itself.

When Faux was still busy writing his book in 2022, NFT prices were already sinking. The author purchases a Mutant Ape NFT, which was part of a spinoff collection produced by Yuga Labs, for $20,000 for the sole purpose of gaining access to an ApeFest party so that he could research his book. To put this in perspective, a similar NFT was sold for almost double that amount just weeks earlier.

Today in the current market, the least expensive Bored Ape on sale is known as the “price floor can be purchased at around $70,000 according to recent prices from NFTpricefloor.com. In April this year, a similar NFT was valued 90% lower than what it was in 2021. However, many  NFT values have increased alongside cryptocurrencies like Mutant Ape, which is currently priced at approximately $12,800, thus showing signs that the NFT market may be on the verge of experiencing a resurgence.

            NFTs are Bouncing Back

Despite the overall downturn, various NFT collections managed to retain their value and many investors plan to stick with the NFT market. Popular NFT collections like Pudgy Penguins still manage to maintain relevance within the digital art space (with its NFT floor price sitting at around $50,000) and beyond through branching into other lucrative avenues.

The collection’s creators launched a line of plush toys available at major retailers like Walmart, generating millions in revenue. Similarly, Doodles, another popular NFT series, expanded into diverse ventures, including digital wearables, a record label, and collaborations with high-profile figures like Pharrell Williams, who serves as the brand’s creative director.

These examples highlight a critical shift in the NFT market: the need for tangible utility and community engagement. As speculative trading diminished, projects that offered real-world applications or sustained cultural relevance stood out in a crowded field. Yet for many early adopters, the dream of striking it rich through NFT trading faded, replaced by a more pragmatic approach to the technology.

One area where NFTs have maintained a degree of legitimacy is the art world. Prestigious institutions and events, such as Art Basel Miami Beach, continue to explore the intersection of digital technology and traditional art. In 2023, Sotheby’s set a record for algorithmically generated art with the sale of a piece from Dmitri Cherniak’s Ringers series for $6.2 million. Museums have also begun to embrace blockchain art, with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art acquiring its first NFT. While these milestones indicate growing institutional recognition, they also signal a transition from a speculative frenzy to a more thoughtful integration of NFTs into the broader art landscape.

            Shifting Trends in Digital Assets

While NFTs are making a comeback so is the general interest around other digital assets. Meme coins, cryptocurrencies inspired by internet jokes, became the new focal point for speculative investors. Tokens like Dogecoin and Bonk gained traction, often riding waves of viral popularity. Even celebrities joined the trend, with rapper Iggy Azalea and former NBA star Scottie Pippen launching their own meme-based currencies. These developments underscored the adaptability of digital asset markets, where trends shift rapidly and unpredictably.

A New Era of Digital Art

For those still active in the NFT space, the focus has shifted from rapid trading to long-term value creation. Former Christie’s digital art head Noah Davis, who played a key in the $69.3 million sale for Beeple’s Everydays: The First 5000, helped drive the initial NFT Mania, and three years later has now co-founded Fountain, a brokerage aimed at connecting buyers and sellers of high-value digital art.

This new phase of the market prioritizes artistic integrity and sustainable growth over quick profits. Fountain has facilitated significant transactions, such as the sale of a rare CryptoPunk alien NFT and a set of 10 Autoglyphs, each exceeding $10 million. Events like Art Blocks, hosted by generative art platform Art Blocks, continue to draw dedicated enthusiasts, demonstrating that NFTs still hold appeal for a committed community of collectors and creators.

As the speculative energy that once defined the NFT market dissipates, the industry faces a critical juncture. Projects with genuine artistic or practical value are more likely to endure, while others risk becoming relics of a fleeting trend. Whether NFTs will achieve their transformative potential in art, finance, and technology remains an open question, but their story thus far offers valuable insights into the intersection of culture, innovation, and human behavior.
