Can I Transfer Ps5 To Ps5 Pro With An External Hard Drive?

Can I Transfer Ps5 To Ps5 Pro With An External Hard Drive?

Upgrading from a PlayStation 5 (PS5) to the PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) is an exciting opportunity to experience enhanced performance, improved graphics, and faster load times. However, one of the key considerations when making this upgrade is transferring your data—particularly saved games, installed applications, and system settings—to the new console. This is where the question arises: Can I transfer data from my PS5 to PS5 Pro with an external hard drive?

In this guide, we will explore whether it is possible to use an external hard drive for transferring files between the two consoles, how to do it effectively, and whether this method is recommended for all types of data. By the end, you’ll know how to make the most of your external storage device and determine whether it is the best option for transferring your data to the PS5 Pro.

    1. The Role of External Hard Drives in PS5 and PS5 Pro Transfers

External hard drives are commonly used for various purposes on the PS5, including expanding storage for games and media, backing up data, and transferring files between consoles. The PS5 Pro, much like its predecessor, allows for external storage devices to be used for game installs, downloadable content (DLC), and system backups. When transferring data from PS5 to PS5 Pro, an external hard drive can serve as an intermediary tool to move both games and user data, provided the necessary steps are followed.

Before diving into the specifics, it’s important to clarify what an external hard drive can and cannot do when transferring data between PS5 and PS5 Pro.

    2. What Data Can Be Transferred Using an External Hard Drive?

When using an external hard drive to transfer data between a PS5 and PS5 Pro, the following types of data can typically be moved:

Game Files: Both physical and digital game installations can be stored on and transferred from an external hard drive. Game data includes the game files themselves, downloadable content (DLC), and other in-game assets.

Saved Data: Although saved game data can be transferred to an external hard drive, this is limited to the game files themselves. In other words, the save data does not transfer automatically with the game files and typically requires an additional step (like using cloud storage) for a seamless transition.

Media Files: Any media files stored on the PS5, such as movies, music, or screenshots, can also be transferred via an external hard drive.

However, it’s important to note that system settings, profiles, and other system-level data (such as user preferences or login credentials) will not be transferred automatically by simply moving game data and files onto an external hard drive. These types of data require other methods of transfer, such as a local network connection or cloud storage.

The Role of External Hard Drives in PS5 and PS5 Pro Transfers

    3. How to Transfer PS5 Data to PS5 Pro Using an External Hard Drive

To successfully transfer data from your PS5 to your PS5 Pro using an external hard drive, follow these steps:

Step 1: Prepare Your External Hard Drive

First, ensure your external hard drive is compatible with the PS5. The PS5 supports external hard drives with USB 3.0 or later connections, and the drive must be formatted properly for use with the console. The hard drive should have at least enough space to store the data you want to transfer.

Formatting the Drive: If your external hard drive is not formatted for use with the PS5, you will need to format it. To do so, connect the drive to your PS5, go to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage, and follow the on-screen prompts to format the drive. Note that formatting the drive will erase any existing data, so make sure to back up important files before doing this.

Step 2: Back Up Game Files

Next, you’ll need to back up the game files you want to transfer. This includes both the installed games and any associated DLC or updates.

Go to Settings > Storage on your PS5 and select the Games and Apps tab.

From here, you can choose the specific games you wish to back up and select the Move to Extended Storage option. You can select multiple games or just one at a time, depending on how much space your external hard drive has.

Step 3: Transfer Save Data (Cloud or USB)

While your games can be easily transferred using an external hard drive, saved game data is a bit more complicated. You have two main options for transferring saved data:

Cloud Storage (PS Plus Required): If you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber, your game save data is automatically uploaded to the cloud. On your PS5, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Console Storage and select Upload to Cloud Storage. Once the data is uploaded, sign in to your PSN account on the PS5 Pro, and your saves can be downloaded from the cloud to your new system.

Using a USB Drive for Save Data: If you don’t have a PS Plus subscription, you can manually transfer saved data to a USB drive. To do this, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5), select the game save data you want to move, and choose Copy to USB Storage Device. Then, on your PS5 Pro, plug in the same USB drive and navigate to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings to copy the saved data from the USB drive to your new console.

Step 4: Transfer the Files to the PS5 Pro

Once your external hard drive is prepared and the game files are backed up, the next step is to connect the drive to your PS5 Pro and restore the data.

Connect the external hard drive to one of the available USB ports on the PS5 Pro.

Navigate to Settings > Storage > Extended Storage on your PS5 Pro. From here, you can select the games and applications you wish to transfer and move them to the PS5 Pro’s internal storage.

At this point, your game files will be available on your new console. If you used cloud storage or a USB drive for your saved game data, you can now download it from the cloud or copy it from the USB drive to restore your progress.

How to Transfer PS5 Data to PS5 Pro Using an External Hard Drive

    4. Limitations of Using an External Hard Drive for Transfer

While using an external hard drive is an effective way to transfer data, it does come with a few limitations:

Game Saves Not Automatically Transferred: As mentioned earlier, game saves are not automatically transferred with game files. You will need to use cloud storage (if you have PS Plus) or manually back up and restore saves using a USB drive.

System Data Not Transferred: Settings, user profiles, and system-level data (such as network configurations) are not transferred via an external hard drive. You will need to either use a local network transfer or sign in to your PlayStation account on the PS5 Pro to restore these settings.

Storage Limitations: External hard drives typically offer a slower transfer speed than the PS5’s internal SSD. While it’s fine for storing games and media, you may notice slower load times or performance issues when running games directly from the external drive. Therefore, it’s recommended to move high-performance games (such as those with large file sizes or requiring fast load times) to the PS5 Pro’s internal storage for optimal performance.

    5. Advantages and Disadvantages of Using an External Hard Drive

    Advantages:

Simple and Direct: Using an external hard drive for file transfer is straightforward and doesn’t require an internet connection or subscription (other than PS Plus for cloud storage).

Large Storage Capacity: External hard drives offer significant storage capacity, often exceeding the internal storage of the PS5. This makes it ideal for backing up large numbers of games and media files.

Portability: External hard drives are portable, meaning you can take your games and data with you and use them on any compatible PlayStation console.

    Disadvantages:

Slower Transfer Speed: While external hard drives offer a good alternative to cloud storage, they typically have slower data transfer speeds than the PS5’s internal SSD.

Manual Process: Unlike cloud storage, which automatically backs up and restores save data, using an external hard drive for saves requires a manual transfer process, which can be cumbersome.

Read Also: How Long Does It Take To Transfer Data From Ps5 To Ps5 Pro?

Limited by Drive Speed: The speed of your external hard drive is crucial in determining how fast the data transfer occurs. USB 3.0 drives are faster, but older or slower drives can create bottlenecks during the transfer process.

Is Using an External Hard Drive for PS5 to PS5 Pro Transfer Recommended?

    6. Conclusion: Is Using an External Hard Drive for PS5 to PS5 Pro Transfer Recommended?

Yes, using an external hard drive to transfer data from PS5 to PS5 Pro is an effective and feasible solution. It’s especially useful for transferring large game files, media, and other data. However, for a seamless experience, it’s important to combine this method with cloud storage (if available) for save data, as the external hard drive does not automatically handle game saves.

The external hard drive method is best suited for gamers who need a quick and reliable way to move large amounts of data without the need for internet-based methods. It’s also a great option for those who want to keep a physical backup of their games and files. However, if speed is a priority or you want to move everything (including settings and saved games) with minimal hassle, other methods such as a local network transfer or cloud storage might offer better performance and convenience.

How Long Does It Take To Transfer Data From Ps5 To Ps5 Pro?

Upgrading from a PS5 to the newly released PS5 Pro is exciting, as it promises better graphics, faster performance, and enhanced gameplay experiences. However, if you’ve spent countless hours on your current PS5 building saved games, downloading games, and personalizing settings, transferring this data to your new PS5 Pro is a crucial step. One common question among upgraders is, “How long will it take to transfer data from the PS5 to the PS5 Pro?”

The answer isn’t straightforward, as the transfer time can vary based on several factors: the method you choose, the amount of data to be transferred, and your internet speed. This article will break down each factor, provide estimates for various transfer methods, and offer tips to ensure a smooth and efficient transfer process.

    1. Factors That Affect Data Transfer Time

The time it takes to transfer data from a PS5 to a PS5 Pro can be influenced by the following factors:

Transfer Method: There are several ways to transfer data, including via LAN cable, Wi-Fi, external storage devices, and cloud storage. Each method varies in speed.

Amount of Data: The more games, saved files, and media you have on your PS5, the longer it will take to transfer everything.

Internet Speed: For cloud storage and online transfers, a fast internet connection is crucial. Slow connections can drastically increase transfer times.

Network Traffic: High network traffic, especially during peak hours, can slow down data transfer speeds for cloud-based and network-based transfers.

Understanding these factors will help you choose the best transfer method based on your needs and setup.

    2. Transfer Methods and Estimated Times

Let’s look at the main transfer methods and how long each might take, given ideal and less-than-ideal circumstances.

    A. Data Transfer Over LAN Cable (Direct Network Transfer)

One of the fastest ways to transfer data between a PS5 and PS5 Pro is to use a direct LAN (Ethernet) cable connection. This method is beneficial because it doesn’t rely on external storage or the internet, making it both reliable and fast.

Estimated Transfer Time: For a moderate data amount (around 100 GB), it may take 10-20 minutes via LAN cable. If you’re transferring a larger amount of data, such as 500 GB, expect it to take closer to 30-40 minutes.

Pros: Fast and stable transfer. Ideal for large data volumes.

Cons: Requires both consoles to be close enough to connect with a LAN cable.

How Long Does It Take To Transfer Data From Ps5 To Ps5 Pro?

    B. Data Transfer Over Wi-Fi

If you don’t have access to a LAN cable, transferring data over Wi-Fi is another option. While convenient, Wi-Fi can be significantly slower and less stable than a wired connection, especially if the network has high traffic or signal interference.

Estimated Transfer Time: For a 100 GB transfer, expect it to take between 30 minutes to an hour over a standard Wi-Fi connection. A larger transfer, such as 500 GB, could take 1-3 hours depending on network stability and speed.

Pros: Convenient, doesn’t require additional hardware.

Cons: Slower and less stable than LAN; longer transfer times for larger data amounts.

    C. Data Transfer Using External Storage Devices

You can also transfer data by backing up your PS5 data to an external USB or hard drive, then plugging that storage device into your PS5 Pro to transfer the data. This method is ideal for users who prefer not to rely on network speed and want a backup of their data.

Backup Time: For backing up 100 GB of data to an external storage device, expect 10-20 minutes if using a USB 3.0 device. For 500 GB, it may take 40-60 minutes.

Restore Time: Once backed up, transferring data from the external device to your PS5 Pro may take another 10-20 minutes for 100 GB, or up to 40-60 minutes for 500 GB.

Pros: Doesn’t require network or internet, provides a physical backup.

Cons: Time-consuming if you have a large data amount and requires an external storage device with enough capacity.

    D. Data Transfer Using Cloud Storage

For PlayStation Plus members, cloud storage is a convenient method for transferring game saves and smaller data files. This method is especially useful for players who want to retain save data without transferring entire game files.

Estimated Transfer Time: Game saves are relatively small in size (usually less than a few MBs each), so uploading and downloading them typically takes only a few minutes. However, if you’re using cloud storage to redownload games, transfer times can vary greatly depending on your internet speed. For instance, downloading a 100 GB game over a 100 Mbps connection might take about 2-3 hours.

Pros: Simple and convenient, no external hardware required.

Cons: Download times for full games can be lengthy, especially on slower internet connections; requires PlayStation Plus subscription.

How Long Does It Take To Transfer Data From Ps5 To Ps5 Pro?

    3. Practical Steps to Speed Up the Data Transfer Process

If you want to speed up the transfer, here are some helpful tips:

    A. Prioritize Key Files

Consider transferring only the essentials first, such as game saves and your most frequently played games. This allows you to start gaming sooner while the rest of your data transfers in the background.

    B. Use a LAN Cable if Possible

If both consoles are close enough, using a direct LAN connection is one of the best ways to reduce transfer time. It’s faster, more stable, and less likely to be affected by network issues compared to Wi-Fi.

    C. Opt for Off-Peak Hours

If you’re transferring data over Wi-Fi or downloading large files from the cloud, try doing so during off-peak internet usage hours. This can help avoid network congestion, which could slow down transfer times.

    D. Disable Background Processes

Ensure that both consoles are dedicated solely to the transfer by pausing or disabling any background downloads, applications, or updates. This helps optimize speed and stability.

    E. Use External Storage as a Backup

If you plan to transfer data again in the future or want a backup, consider keeping a copy of your data on an external drive. This can save time if you ever need to reset or retransfer data between consoles.

How Long Does It Take To Transfer Data From Ps5 To Ps5 Pro?

    4. Common Issues and Troubleshooting Tips

Sometimes, data transfer might not go as planned. Here are some common issues and troubleshooting tips:

    A. Transfer Freezes or Takes Too Long

If the transfer process freezes or is taking excessively long, try restarting both consoles and the transfer process. Ensuring both consoles have the latest software update can also prevent delays or errors.

    B. Incomplete Data Transfer

Occasionally, certain files or saved data might not transfer correctly. After transferring, double-check that all essential data (especially game saves) has been transferred successfully. If something is missing, you can reattempt a partial transfer of specific files.

    C. Insufficient Storage on PS5 Pro

If your new PS5 Pro doesn’t have enough space, you may need to delete some unused games or media to make room for the transfer. You can reinstall these files later from the PlayStation Store or cloud storage if needed.

    5. Final Thoughts: What to Expect for Total Transfer Time

In general, the time required to transfer data from a PS5 to a PS5 Pro will vary based on the chosen method and the amount of data:

LAN Transfer: Approximately 10-40 minutes for 100-500 GB of data.

Read Also: How To Use Cloud Storage To Transfer Data From Ps5 To Ps5 Pro

Wi-Fi Transfer: About 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on network speed and data size.

External Storage Transfer: Roughly 20-60 minutes each for backing up and restoring.

Cloud Storage: A few minutes for game saves, but up to several hours for full game downloads.

By selecting the transfer method that best suits your needs and optimizing your setup, you can save time and get started on your new PS5 Pro with minimal hassle. The transfer process may take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, but with the right approach, you’ll be back to gaming in no time, ready to enjoy the enhanced power and performance of the PS5 Pro.

Vinnie Jones reveals “spiritual” new girlfriend’s “chat” with his late wife Tanya

Vinnie Jones and girlfriend Emma Ford appear to be going from strength to strength, so much so, it seems, that she’s “had a chat” with his late wife Tanya to assure her she’ll look after the football hardman.

Vinnie’s wife of 25 years, Tanya, died in 2019, six years after receiving a cancer diagnosis. Five years later, he still talks of his feelings of guilt about taking the “next step” with Emma.

However, he has also shared how happy he is with his “spiritual” new love – especially since she ‘spoke’ to his beloved Tanya.

Ex-footballer Vinnie Jones first spoke about girlfriend Emma back in April (Credit: YouTube)

Vinnie Jones on girlfriend Emma’s ‘chat’ with Tanya

Vinnie was pleasantly surprised when his new girlfriend Emma said she’d “had a chat” with his late wife Tanya.

The star told The Sun: “Having Emma alongside me, she’s fantastic. She is spiritual, and she is sober, and she told me something… ‘I’ve had a chat with Tanz and I’ve told her I’m going to look after you.’ That meant a lot to me. And she has helped me, she’s great fun, I haven’t got my heavy boots on any more. I’ve got my trainers on now and we’re jogging.

There are three of us in this relationship because there will always be Tanya and that’s fact.

“With Emma we sort of came along in each other’s lives, but there are three of us in this relationship because there will always be Tanya and that’s fact. The next step you are always feeling guilty about. But I’m sure she’s looking down on me. We had 30 fantastic years, embrace that. You never conquer it,” he said.

      Tanya’s death

Tanya was diagnosed with melanoma, a type of skin cancer, that spread to her lungs and brain. She had previously battled cervical cancer twice. She was aged just 53 when she died.

Vinnie, who stopped playing professional football in 1999, bought his country estate in rural West Sussex in 2022, following Tanya’s death. He hired Emma as his PA in the same year, and the rest, as they say… is history.

The revival of the land and farm buildings is at the heart of his Discovery+ show, Vinnie Jones: In the Country. Series two starts next week. And it was during the first season that he fell for Emma, who he affectionately calls Blondie.

“I didn’t think I would be in a new relationship. I think I was naive to think I would be on my own for the rest of my life – I certainly thought it, and that’s what I wanted. Whereas actually your best mates will say: ‘It’s about you. If you want to be with Emma, you be with her, because actually she’s really good for you Vin.’”

He added that Emma “kind of got me back on my horse”, commenting that after they got together he started to come out of his “sorrow, pain and grief” after losing Tanya.

Vinnie Jones first spoke about his relationship with girlfriend Emma in April 2024. During an interview, Vinnie spoke candidly about “moving forwards”.

“You know, after four months, four years, five years, 10 years, you just keep moving forwards, the grief is always going to be in there,” he said.

From the leap of graphics in Unreal Engine 5.1 using Nanites and Lumen, to the change in locker system and Battle Pass progression, players have been quite vocal about the said modifications made to the game.

Now one feature is something that players have been asking for from Epic ever since it was leaked in Creative mode and that’s a First Person View or First Person Camera in the game. Epic has finally announced that the feature is arriving but might not be exactly how players wanted.

Fortnite to launch first-person camera in UEFN this December

The official Fortnite Creators account has announced that islands that are using the experimental First Person Camera in Creative mode will finally be allowed to be published starting December 11.

With the launch of Chapter 5 Season 4, Epic released an experimental camera that allows players to play in FPV mode but was restricted from publishing islands using that.

Now since the camera is finally being made public, players are wondering if they’ll have the option to change their view mode in Battle Royale and Zero Build game modes. Keeping in mind that while using some weapons in BR lets you enter an FPV camera mode, it’s highly likely that Chapter 6 will finally bring about this change in core Fortnite gameplay.

Players who have been waiting for this update expressed their joy on socials with one user saying, “Something devious will be unleashed.” Another wrote, “It’s gonna be like a whole new game.”

However other Fortnite players expressed their concerns over the compatibility of non-moddable weapons with the first-person camera, and are hoping Epic finds a workaround for the same.

It has been 6 years since we last saw the fan-favorite merc with the mouth. After two back-to-back successful movies, expectations were naturally higher from the next one especially when when Ryan Reynolds announced that it would be based in the MCU and that Hugh Jackman would return as the one and only Wolverine! It is Marvel’s only feature release this year, and the excitement for it was sky-high. Well, the moment that everyone has been waiting for, for so long is finally here.

First of all, this movie is a lot. It is an overwhelming experience, to say the least. The stakes are high and that is established very early on. People who were just expecting a light, breezy buddy comedy that is easy to follow, will be disappointed. This movie is none of those things. Let’s start with the merc with the mouth himself, Ryan Reynolds. Apart from being the star, he also co-wrote and produced it. He was surely at the heart of all the decisions, and from a business and fan satisfaction perspective, he made a lot of great choices. We’ll talk about the business and fan-service side of it later, but his performance is as bonkers as you would expect. He oozes charm, he has the style, and the moves (for action and dancing), and most importantly, he is super entertaining for the most part.

Coming to the hero most of us grew up watching, Logan/Wolverine was the brightest star in this galaxy. He is by far the best part of the movie. A lot of us thought we’d never see the grumpy, old, clawed crusader again after Logan (2017), but here he is at the age of 55 showing everyone, who’s arguably the most popular comic book character of all time in features. His physique is scary and it almost feels like he never stopped playing Wolverine. He is still as fierce and full of rage as ever and as brutal as he was in fight sequences. His fights with Deadpool are really cool and well-executed. Hugh also does most of the emotional heavy lifting here.

Among the rest of the cast, Matthew Macfadyen does well with what he’s given and so does Emma Corrin. Rob Delaney gets some good scenes as Peter. There are no other performances that stand out. On the flip side, fan-favorite characters like Yukio, Blind Al, and Dopinder in particular are utterly wasted. They hardly get screen time and just feel unfairly sidelined in this one. Vanessa does get a little screentime and the story justifies it for her, but for the others, there was a lot of scope to use them. T. J. Miller, another really fun character, isn’t even in the movie.

The writing is the most frustrating aspect of Deadpool and Wolverine. Nobody expected this one to have a great memorable storyline, but I did expect a decent one with a lot of heart and emotion especially when you have Logan. Structurally it’s a mess, and it has way too much exposition at times which makes it hard to follow. Some characters also come out of nowhere to spoil the movie’s flow just for a cheap gag. The story also lacks any real heart or emotion, even with such high stakes. The writers could’ve gone so much deeper into the bromance of our 2 leads, but they failed to and that causes a limitation in the level of chemistry between the 2 actors, it isn’t bad, but never fulfills its true potential.

The movie has a relatively decent run time, and clocks just over 2 hrs. But its relentless pace is its own worst enemy at times. There is no space or time to let the arcs properly cook, or to even develop and establish the characters in the first place. That is what holds back the characters of Cassandra Nova and Mr. Paradox from being interesting or menacing. This also results in not fully utilizing the range of Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen who are both superb actors. Fans also expect a great villain that they could hate, in modern superhero movies but Cassandra Nova is massively undercooked and ends up being a forgettable foe than a formidable one.

Even though the movie is called Deadpool and Wolverine, it still feels mostly like Deadpool’s movie, not to say that Logan doesn’t have his moments. If he wasn’t in it, we’d be having a completely different conversation, but thankfully he is and he delivers. Another thing that I noticed is that all the Deadpool movies have a common problem of starting off with a bang and then gradually fading away. I definitely liked the first half way more than the second, and that is largely due to a weak third act. The movie truly goes off the rails in the climax. Its primary concern seems to be fan service rather than tying all the knots and wrapping the story with a warm impact.

For me, that’s on Shawn Levy. I love him as a director, but he seems to be very reserved with his direction here and seems scared to flex his muscles at all. Yes, there is a lot of cool action here and the VFX is great, but he could have done more. His inexperience with R-rated content was evident here. Talking about action, it was mostly cool and very stylistic. But (Minor Spoilers) 90% of the fight scenes are between Logan and Wade. I didn’t come to this movie for that, we already had that in X-Men origins. Ultimately, I think the movie struggles to cope with the pressure of entering the MCU. It not only has to be a good Deadpool movie, but It also has to be a good MCU movie, which comes with its challenges. The writers try to adjust to the new landscape and fit in all the tools that they have at their disposal, but it only made the screenplay more messy in the larger context.

But keeping all that aside, there’s another thing that was promised to the audiences in this movie, cameos, lots and lots of them. They absolutely deliver on the cameos, it might even exceed some people’s expectations. I can imagine people howling in the cinemas at some of them. Most of them work well within the story. They also didn’t hamper the tone or the feel of the storytelling and were molded to fit the Deadpool brand and R-rating. The R-rating is well-used considering it’s Marvel’s first attempt at it, but for all the violence and blood in this movie, don’t expect a lot of gore. Do expect a lot of swearing and adult jokes.

Deadpool & Wolverine [credit: Marvel Studios]

Deadpool and Wolverine is the real Multiverse of Madness that delivers bucketloads of mindless fun, but ultimately gets buried under the weight of joining the MCU. The threequel delivers all the violence, vulgarity and needle drops that you would expect from a Deadpool movie. It brings fresh energy to the MCU and pays homage to the X-Men with a fully firing Hugh Jackman at the heart of it. It is truly a relentless R-rated romp for the most part, but it has a convoluted script that also lacks warmth and emotion, and leaves you wanting more from these characters. But thanks to its awesome soundtrack, a stack of great cameos, and almost nonstop meta-commentary, it still makes for an entertaining cinematic experience.

Deadpool and Wolverine will be released in cinemas on July 26.

Civic Introduces Civic Auth, Offering A Gateway To Comprehensive Identity Management

Provider of identity management solutions, Civic announced the launch of Civic Auth, a single sign-on platform designed to serve as an entry point to Web3. This solution provides users with access to a comprehensive suite of identity management tools.

“By introducing Civic Auth, we’re helping developers meet people where they are in their Web3 journey and creating familiar experiences for everyone from Web3 novices to experts,” said JP Bedoya, Chief Product Officer at Civic, in a written statement. “Users are able to benefit from a single, unified identity solution that can meet various verification requirements across the Web3 ecosystem. Now, applications can serve their users with a flexible identity platform that will allow them to easily zip around the ecosystem,” he added.

With Civic Auth, users can connect their existing wallets or simply sign in with their email, passkey, or Google account. If a user does not bring their own wallet, one will be automatically created for them. This user-friendly process reduces friction and simplifies onboarding for those new to Web3. By using abstracted wallets, Civic Auth allows more individuals to enjoy the benefits of blockchain technology without the complexity of managing private keys themselves.

Once a user’s wallet is connected, Civic can verify their identity and government-issued ID, which can then be used for purposes such as preventing Sybil attacks or ensuring compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations. Developers can also take advantage of privacy-preserving features, such as on-chain gating and credential proofs in smart contract executions, to enhance security. Additionally, developers can easily re-verify a user’s identity at login, denying access to those who do not pass identity verification.

Combating fraud, cheating, and spam has been a constant challenge in the digital space, with new attack methods emerging regularly. To address this, Civic’s identity solutions use tokenized identity to secure an application’s environment, offering comprehensive protection without requiring the integration of multiple vendors.

Having issued over 925,000 Civic Passes and established itself as a trusted partner for many startups, Civic has positioned itself as a leading platform for Web3 identity management.

        Civic: What Is It?

This project provides a comprehensive solution for managing digital identity on a verifiable internet, giving individuals control over their identities in a private, blockchain-compatible manner. Through its main offering, Civic Pass, the company offers business clients a streamlined tool for permissioning, allowing secure access to on-chain assets.

Additionally, Civic.me is available for consumers to manage their identity, digital presence, and reputation. Civic‘s goal is to become a globally trusted on-chain identity solution, aiming for widespread, daily use. The company was established in 2015 by Vinny Lingham and Jonathan Smith.
