The Callisto Protocol Dev Cuts More Jobs In Gaming’s Latest Layoffs

Striking Distance Studios, the Krafton-owned game studio that made 2022’s The Callisto Protocol and 2024’s Redacted, has undergone a new round of layoffs. This follows on from a previous round of cuts in 2023.

In a statement to GameSpot, Striking Distance confirmed that it has “reduced the size of its team” in an effort to “remain agile.” The statement also stressed that the cuts were part of a drive to establish a “sustainable environment” at the studio for the “current stage of development on future projects.”

Striking Distance does not have any upcoming games that have been announced, but the statement confirmed that the team “remains operational” and that the layoffs “will not impact any planned ongoing support.”

“No further changes are planned at this time,” Striking Distance said to close out its statement.

In terms of the scope of the cuts, that remains unknown, but 80 Level discovered that anaffected worker said “most of the devs were laid off.”

Striking Distance has zero open positions listed on its careers page.

The Callisto Protocol was released in 2022 and was originally planned to be a PUBG spin-off before those plans were scuttled and it became its own thing. The game wasn’t a critical or commercial hit, however. Striking Distance followed it up with October 2024’s Redacted, which is set in the same sci-fi horror universe as The Callisto Protocol. It didn’t exactly light it up, either, in terms of review scores or sales–it achieved a peak concurrent player figure of 168 on Steam.

As for what’s next, it’s been reported that Striking Distance is working on a third-person AAA multiplayer game that runs on Unreal Engine 5.

Striking Distance was founded by Glen Schofield, who is best known for his work on the Dead Space and Call of Duty franchises. Schofield left the company in 2023 and is hyping up a mysterious project.

Layoffs in the video game industry have been a repeated event in the past few years, and the unfortunate trend has continued so far in 2025, with layoffs impacting the Marvel Rivals US team, Crytek, and BioWare, among others.

Perfect was founded by Eylon Etshtein, best known for launching Anyvision, a controversial facial recognition startup that later rebranded and was eventually acquired. Etshtein’s inspiration for Perfect stemmed from his hands-on experience hiring at Anyvision, where he realized that scaling the recruitment process manually was unsustainable.

With his background in AI, Etshtein had the idea of creating a smart recruitment platform that could automate the recruitment process based on data-driven information. The idea was to build an AI system that could search for the ideal candidates quickly, much like how facial recognition systems can locate specific people in enormous databases.

Following his departure from Anyvision, Etshtein focused on recruitment technology to address inefficiencies in the hiring process. His background in AI-based solutions has made Perfect a leader in the emerging market of AI-powered HR tools.

What Makes Perfect Unique?

The AI hiring space is extremely competitive, with many startups creating solutions to make hiring better. But Perfect stands out by developing its platform from scratch, instead of using third-party Large Language Models (LLMs).

Perfect’s $23 million funding round has been structured in two parts:

An equity investment of $12 million from Target Global, RTP Global, Pitango, and other early backers, was raised approximately a year ago.

An interest-free SAFE note, convertible to equity in a future round, from Hanaco Ventures, Joule Ventures, and Young Sohn (former president of Samsung and a board member at Arm).

The recruitment sector has been in desperate need of genuine innovation for years, with most processes depending on legacy manual workflows or half-baked AI tools. Perfect is viewed by investors as a huge disruptor in this market.

This definition equates engagement with action, implying that the more someone interacts with a piece of content, the more engaged they are.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, engagement is defined as “emotional involvement or commitment.” So, who’s right? Is engagement about measurable actions, or is it an internal emotional experience? Let’s dive deeper.

The History of Engagement: A Short but Rich Story

In Western thought, the concept of engagement has a surprisingly brief history. The first philosopher to use the term explicitly was Jean-Paul Sartre in the mid-20th century. Sartre defined engagement (l’engagement) as a conscious commitment to action. For Sartre, engagement was about knowingly choosing to act or commit.

Sartre’s ideas were influenced by Martin Heidegger, who introduced the concept of being-in-the-world (Dasein)—a state of meaningful, active participation in life. Why Metrics Fall Short

While interactions provide a starting point, they fail to capture the depth of engagement:

Emotional Depth: A like or comment doesn’t necessarily reflect true emotional involvement. It might be habitual or fleeting.
Silent Engagement: People can be deeply engaged without outward interaction, as seen in real-life scenarios like a family watching a game or someone admiring art.

This event brought together leading organizations, prominent Web3 projects, and key opinion leaders (KOLs) from Hong Kong and around the globe to explore new opportunities in the development of the Web3 ecosystem, who shared their insights during a keynote session.

ML KOL Club, the event’s host, began with the opening keynote. The organization connects prominent global opinion leaders and has developed a large, engaged community. Next, BrushO, a decentralized global oral health data platform, presented its initiative. Following the presentations, the KOL Award Ceremony took place. During this ceremony, the organizers recognized KOLs who had made considerable contributions to the Web3 industry over the past year. David Beckham has opened up about the grief he faces in his relationship with Victoria, as they embark on an intense exercising routine.

David, 49, and Victoria, 50, have been together 27 years. The pair began dating in 1997 after meeting at a charity football match and went on to get married two years later.

The couple would regularly share their healthy lifestyles on their Instagram pages, sharing their workouts with fans. But now, in a new interview ahead of his 50th birthday, the football star admitted he and Victoria would “give each other grief” while working out together.

David Beckham reveals ‘grief’ with Victoria

Despite their intense workouts, David revealed he had spent a long time trying to get his wife to use his personal trainer, and she has finally caved. But it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the pair.

Speaking to Men’s Health, the dad-of-four said: “I have been trying to Victoria to work out with [personal trainer] Bob Rich for years. And she finally agreed to adjust her workout. Now, we do five days a week, sometimes six together.”

As for what it’s like working out together, David admitted: “I give her a lot of grief. We both give each other plenty of grief.”

He continued: “She is not very good at listening to Bob. Well, she is good at listening. But then she does her own thing and she’s not great at taking a rest. But when it is good in the gym and we’re both in a good mood – it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Looking ahead at his 50th birthday

David’s turning 50 in three months time. And the thought of that can be daunting for some. But how does he feel about it? He isn’t that bothered.

“It doesn’t bother me one bit,” David said. “People are asking me about it gently, like it should be a big issue. It’s not something that I am worried about. As long as I am fit and healthy. And my family are healthy – that’s all I care about.”

And for his 50th birthday plans, he is going to keep it “really simple” and celebrate with a few close friends.
