    Reflecting on Her Impact

Bobbi Kristina’s life, though short, was filled with moments that touched many. She showed us the importance of resilience and the power of love. Her story is a poignant reminder of the pressures that come with fame and the importance of mental health and support.

Decentralized systems are reshaping how we interact, conduct transactions, and govern online communities. As Web3 continues to advance, the necessity for effective and fair voting mechanisms becomes apparent. Traditional voting systems, such as the one-token-one-vote model, often fall short in capturing the intensity of individual preferences, which can result in centralization. Quadratic Voting (QV) addresses this challenge by enabling individuals to express not only their choices but also the strength of their preferences.

In QV, voters are allocated a budget of credits that they can spend to cast votes on various issues. The cost of casting multiple votes on a single issue increases quadratically, meaning that each additional vote costs more than the last. This system allows for a more precise expression of preferences, as individuals can invest more heavily in issues they care deeply about while conserving credits on matters of lesser importance.

    Understanding Quadratic Voting

Quadratic Voting (QV) is a voting system designed to capture not only the choices of individuals but also the strength of their preferences. In most DAO voting mechanisms, each person typically has one vote per token, which limits the ability to express how strongly they feel about a particular matter. Furthermore, QV limits the power of whales and founding team who typically have large token allocations. These problems are adressed by making the cost of each additional vote increase quadratically.

In QV, each voter is given a budget of credits or tokens that they can spend to cast votes on various issues. The key principle is that the cost to cast n votes on a single issue is proportional to the square of n. This quadratic cost function ensures that while voters can express stronger preferences, doing so requires a disproportionately higher expenditure of their voting credits. This mechanism discourages voters from concentrating all their influence on a single issue unless they feel very strongly about it. In the context of DAOs, it means that large holders will have a hard-time pushing through with a proposal if they’ll try to do it on their own.

    Practical Example

Consider a voter who has been allocated 25 voting credits to spend on several proposals. The voter has varying degrees of interest in three proposals: Proposal A, Proposal B, and Proposal C.

    Proposal A: High interest.

    Proposal B: Moderate interest.

    Proposal C: Low interest.

The voter might allocate their credits as follows:

    Proposal A:

    Votes cast: 3

    Cost: 9 delegated tokens

    Proposal B:

    Votes cast: 2

    Cost: 4 delegated tokens

    Proposal C:

    Votes cast: 1

    Cost: 1 delegated token

Total delegated tokens: 14Remaining tokens: 11

With the remaining tokens, the voter can choose to allocate additional votes to the proposals based on their preferences or save for future proposals. If they feel particularly strong about Proposal A, they might decide to cast one more vote:

    Additional vote on Proposal A:

    New total votes: 4

    New cost: 16 delegated tokens

    Additional cost: 16−9 = 7 delegated tokens

    Updated total delegated tokens: 14+7 = 21

    Updated remaining tokens: 25−21 = 425 – 21 = 4

This additional vote on Proposal A costs 7 credits, significantly more than the previous vote, illustrating how the quadratic cost discourages excessive influence on a single issue without strong conviction.

    Benefits of Implementing Quadratic Voting

Key Characteristics of the Quadratic Cost Function

Marginal Cost Increases Linearly: The marginal cost of each additional vote increases linearly. The cost difference between casting n and n−1 votes is 2n−1.

Total Cost Increases Quadratically: The total cost to cast multiple votes rises steeply, discouraging voters from concentrating too many votes on a single issue without significant reason.

Promotes Egalitarian Voting: Small voters are encouraged to participate, because relatively they have a much higher impact.

    Advantages Over Traditional Voting Systems

Quadratic Voting offers several benefits compared to traditional one-person-one-vote systems:

Captures Preference Intensity: By allowing voters to express how strongly they feel about an issue, QV leads to outcomes that better reflect the collective welfare.

Reduces Majority Domination: The quadratic cost makes it costly for majority groups to overpower minority interests on every issue.

Encourages Honest Voting: Voters are incentivized to allocate votes in proportion to their true preferences, reducing manipulation.

By understanding the foundation of Quadratic Voting, stakeholders in Web3 communities can appreciate how this system supports more representative governance.

    Conclusion

Quadratic voting is a novel voting system that may be used within DAOs to foster decentralization. The key idea is to make the cost of voting on a certain issue increase quadratically. The leading player that makes use of this mechanism is Optimism. If you’re pondering about the design of your DAO, we highly recommend taking a look at their research on quadratic funding.

Liam Payne’s family share new statement on singer’s death as they reveal “indescribable lasting damage” to his son Bear

Liam Payne’s family have released a heartbreaking new statement which details the “indescribably lasting damage” for his son, Bear.

The One Direction singer tragically died on October 16, 2024, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after he fell from a third-storey balcony. Immediately after his death, images of his body began circulating on social media.

As the investigation into the circumstances of his death continues, charges were dropped for three people, including his friend Roger Norres. However, two others still have charges against them for supplying drugs to the 31-year-old singer.

But now his family have released a statement.

      Liam Payne family statement released

Up until now, Liam’s family have remained silent on the ongoing case, along with their grief. But now they have broken their silence. The statement was released yesterday (Sunday March 3), and his family gave a heartbreaking update on how his son, Bear, is coping.

On behalf of his family, the statement read: “Liam’s death was an unspeakable tragedy. This is a time of tremendous grief and pain for those who knew and loved him. Liam ought to have had a long life ahead of him.”

They went on to directly comment on the updates in the investigation. It read: “We understand that the investigation into Liam’s death was absolutely necessary. And the family recognises the work done by the Argentinian authorities. However, the family accepts the Court of Appeal’s decision to drop all charges.”

Liam’s family then gave a heartbreaking update on Bear, after the media attention. Seven-year-old Bear is the son of Liam and his ex-girlfriend Cheryl.

“The constant media attention and speculation which has accompanied the process has exacted indescribable, lasting damage on the family. Particularly on Liam’s son, who is trying to process emotions which no seven-year-old should have to experience.”

They then went on to ask for privacy and space as they continue to grieve for Liam. And they also explained they “joined the celebration of his life” that was shown at the BRIT Awards on Saturday night.

It ended: “This weekend, at the BRIT Awards, Liam was remembered for his phenomenal contribution to British music and for his wider, positive impact on millions of adoring fans the world over.”

      BRIT awards paid tribute

The statement comes as the BRIT Awards paid an emotional homage to the singer. Jack Whitehall introduced the tribute, explaining they have “so many amazing memories” of the star at the awards ceremonies over the years.

They then played a tear-jerking video montage of Liam, including moments of his entire life and career. Over the top, a recording of Liam singing the One Direction hit Little Things played.

Fans were left in tears after the “beautiful” homage to Liam. And so did his close friend and bandmate Louis Tomlinson, who thanked the ceremony for the tribute.

Ditching the dongle on Logitech Zone Wireless 2

Ditching the dongle on Logitech Zone Wireless 2

Zone Wireless 2 is certified for Microsoft Teams over native Bluetooth. Enjoy a full Teams experience without a dongle.

      Logitech

Microsoft and Logitech have been working together to get us Native Bluetooth support for Logitech Wireless 2 headset. I wrote about Logitech Wireless 2 earlier, over a year ago. Back then (and until recently) it was required to use dongle if you wanted to have all Microsoft Teams functionalities, that certification brings.

Enjoy all the functionality of a Teams meeting without the need for a dongle or additional software. Join a meeting, answer or end calls, mute or unmute yourself, or raise your hand.

      Logitech

This “ditch the dongle” -feature was released recently, the firmware 1.3.74 upgrade is dated January 16th, 2025.

I have been using Zone Wireless 2 in my Teams meetings quite a lot. In fact it is an excellent headset – audio quality is great for calls and the active noise cancellation is superb. This is really useful when family is at home. And thanks to Teams Voice Isolation + Zone Wireless 2 microphones family members (or in case you sit in a office with others: your coworkers) voices are not heard by online participants. The only drawback for me with Zone Wireless 2 is, that it is on-the-ear headset, which means I can’t wear it for multiple hours without a break, as it starts to press on my ears and gets uncomfortable. But a short break helps for that. Hey, Logitech: do you have plans to create an over-the-ear headset with similar quality & capabilities by any chance? #wishingwell

Now that the dongle is ditched, I haven’t gotten back to the dongle with Zone Wireless 2 anymore. There just isn’t any need to that. The connection is stable (no breaking up), controls work and Teams button is active via Bluetooth. This is just splendid, as I don’t have to worry about using the dongle to one of my two USB-C ports on Surface Laptop Studio.. This is a big thing, especially when you take the headset to the road with you – or you move around the office. This also means that I don’t have to worry about forgetting the dongle somewhere, or mixing it up with other headsets’ dongles. A little thing, big impact.

What I do wish, that Logitech (and Jabra) would upgrade other existing headsets to dongle-free. They can be used via Bluetooth (and usually it works quite ok) but getting that small extra with Teams Certification would be welcome. Especially Logitech True Wireless buds and Jabra Evolve2 buds would benefit of dongle-free functionality, but probably there isn’t hardware that could be just firmware updated to the required level. Both do work as a Bluetooth headset, but are not Teams Certificated when used without a dongle.

Microsoft Swift Pair is making the pairing of the headset really easy. I didn’t catch my own screenshot about the pairing after the upgrade, but taking a snip from Logitech’s page tells how it goes. Just turn on the headset and pair – could not be easier! The snip mentions the Zone 305, but it appeared to Zone Wireless 2 as well.

If you haven’t tried Zone Wireless 2 without a dongle so far, now is the time to ditch the dongle and celebrate about one more free USB-port in the laptop! To me this is just superb, but I do hope this extends to other models and vendors so the age of dongles can be put behind us (at least partially).

Inside The Bay star Marsha Thomason’s life with husband Craig – move to LA; wedding mishap; welcoming a daughter

Inside The Bay star Marsha Thomason’s life with husband Craig – move to LA; wedding mishap; welcoming a daughter

Lost, The Haunted Mansion and The Bay star Marsha Thomason hails from Manchester but she lives thousands of miles away now with her husband and little girl.

Marsha first came to prominence in her early twenties as Sally in Pie In The Sky. Much has changed since then. She’s married. She has a daughter. And she’s no longer just a UK citizen – she added a feather to her bow in 2012.

Here, as The Bay returns to our screens, is a brief rundown of Marsha Thomason’s life away from the crime drama cameras…

Catch Marsha in The Bay on Sundays on ITV (Credit: HITMAN/YouTube)

Moving to LA… and meeting her man

Growing up in Lancashire, Marsha admitted she would not be where she is today were it not for the Oldham Theatre Workshop. It was here that she first honed her talents.

“I was 12 when I joined and I owe everything to them. It was where I got my first break and I just learnt so much there. Acting was just a hobby at first, but when I was 17 I realised it was all I wanted to do.

“Without somewhere like that, how else was a girl from Manchester going to become a Hollywood actress?” she told the Manchester Evening News in 2004.

Soon enough, Marsha Thomason left her UK life for a new one in the States, where she also met her husband (but more on him later).

        ‘It happened organically’

The actress’ move to LA was not one motivated by chasing fame, though.

“I know that a bunch of actors have cited it as a reason, but for me it kind of happened organically. I’d always been successful in the UK, although I was generally the only black person in the cast,” she said.

“I’d been in the UK, but I had just made a couple of big American films and got cast in a pilot and I really liked LA and stayed,” she explained.

She’s been there ever since, commuting back and forth for work, including on ITV drama The Bay.

Marsha Thomason meets and marries husband Craig

On April 5, 2009, Marsha married a lighting technician by the name of Craig Sykes in Malibu, California.

They celebrated their tying of the knot at the Inn of the Seventh Ray in sunny Cali, an organic restaurant serving Californian cuisine in a woodland setting.

Marsha was 33 at the time. Her bridesmaids clutched red roses, E! Online reported at the time.

There was a minor mishap on the day, though – one of the bride’s diamond earrings fell out during the photoshoot.

Marsha and husband Craig’s wedding pics

Images from the wedding were published in InStyle magazine.

In 2023, Marsha shared that she’d found the magazine, and posted one of the pages from the shoot on her Instagram grid.

In the pics, she can be seen wearing her hair up, with gorgeous white flowers in her hair, beautifully setting off her strapless wedding gown.

She captioned the shot: “We celebrated our 14-year wedding anniversary last week and I just came across this piece from InStyle Weddings. Look at those babies!!! I love you Craig!”

Honeymooning in (not so) perfect Puerto Rico

Marsha and Craig went to Puerto Rico for a three-week honeymoon shortly after the wedding.

However, as she revealed several years later in a Facebook post, it rained the whole time.

The happy couple nevertheless appear to have enjoyed some beach time, while Marsha read Rabbit, Run by author John Updike.

She became a US citizen in 2012

On July 18, 2023, Marsha Thomason posted on Instagram that she had just become a citizen of the United States of America.

She shared a photo of a bouquet of red, white and blue flowers featuring an American flag.

The US and the UK are among many countries that allow dual citizenship, meaning she didn’t have to renege her British passport in order to get hold of an American one.

Marsha and Craig welcome baby girl

In June 2013 – a year after Marsha gained American citizenship – the couple welcomed a baby girl.

Tallulah Anais was born in New York City on June 12.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with our new arrival,” the couple said in a statement.

We couldn’t be more thrilled with our new arrival.

The couple keep their life with Tallulah largely away from the cameras. However, Marsha did enjoy a pre-Christmas night out with her little girl in December 2023.

Fans gushed: “Awww her little face is so adorbs.” A second added: “She’s beautiful!”

“Omg look at this gorgeous girl!! Just like her mama!!” said a third.

She isn’t just a pretty face though… Little Tallulah is an activist as well. She joined her mum and dad on a protest for abortion rights.

She carried a sign that read: “Get your hands off my my my body!” while sitting on her dad’s shoulders.

Trump’s SEC Is Ending Crypto Lawsuits and Investigations—These Are the Biggest – Decrypt

The momentum has shifted in the yearslong battle between top crypto companies and protocols and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission under the new Trump administration.

The regulator, which now has a crypto task force led by longtime industry advocate Hester Peirce, is moving away from what Pierce and others have called “regulation by enforcement” to less hostile engagements with crypto.

Thus far, those words have rung true with the SEC recently backing away from fights with multiple top crypto companies. Here are the SEC’s biggest pivots, reversals, and exits so far under Trump.

          Binance

Following a joint request, a U.S. district judge granted Binance a 60-day pause in its ongoing legal battle with the SEC, allowing both parties an opportunity to reassess the shifting regulatory landscape.

The stay is in effect until April 14, at which point both parties will need to submit a status report. And since the stay was granted, the SEC has ended many other investigations and lawsuits, which may hint at what to expect from the Binance resolution.

The exchange has dealt with alleged securities, money laundering, and sanctions compliance issues since at least 2023, which led to two separate settlements for $4.3 billion and $2.7 billion, respectively.

          Crypto rulemaking case

On February 17, the SEC voluntarily dropped an appeal in a case revolving around the regulator’s previous attempts to extend securities laws to decentralized finance (DeFi) applications and users.

The appeal was made after a federal judge in Texas called the regulator’s expanded definitions unlawful, citing that it was conflating DeFi traders with financial brokers.

The dropped appeal ensures that DeFi protocols do not need to register with the SEC as securities exchanges, leading the Blockchain Association CEO Kristin Smith to call it a “complete and total victory.”

          Coinbase

Leading American crypto exchange Coinbase had its lawsuit officially dismissed by the SEC in February.

The suit, which was filed in 2023, alleged that the platform knowingly operated as an unregistered securities exchange, specifically calling out tokens like Solana and Polygon in the process.

In its statement on the move, the Commission said that the decision “rests on its judgement that the dismissal will facilitate the Commission’s ongoing efforts to reform and renew its regulatory approach to the crypto industry.”

Prior to official approval, Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal said of the dismissal “there will be no settlement or compromise—a wrong will simply be made right.”

          OpenSea

The SEC has ended its investigation into NFT marketplace OpenSea, the firm said in February, dropping charges that alleged it operated as an unlicensed securities brokerage. The platform indicated it received a Wells notice from the regulator in August 2024, signaling the SEC would take action against it.

“This is a win for everyone who is creating and building in our space,” said OpenSea CEO Devin Finzer. “Trying to classify NFTs as securities would have been a step backward—one that misinterprets the law and slows innovation.”

          Robinhood Crypto

An SEC investigation into Robinhood—one which the platform claims should never have been opened—ended with no action taken by the regulator.

“As we explained to the SEC, any case against Robinhood Crypto would have failed,” said Robinhood’s Chief Legal, Compliance and Corporate Affairs Officer Dan Gallagher. “We appreciate the formal closing of this investigation, and we are happy to see a return to the rule of law and commitment to fairness at the SEC.”

The firm was notified of a potential enforcement action in May 2024 when it received a Wells notice from the Gary Gensler-led SEC.

          Uniswap Labs

Uniswap Labs, the creator of Ethereum decentralized exchange Uniswap, said in February that the SEC has ended its investigation into the organization without filing any charges.

Like other leading crypto organizations, Uniswap Labs received a Wells notice in April 2024 which alleged it operated as an unregistered securities broker, exchange, and clearing agency, and that had enabled the sale of an unregistered security.

With the investigation said to be over, all of the aforementioned claims have now been dropped, said its CEO Hayden Adams.

“They went after us despite having no clear legal basis, as part of a strategy of arbitrary enforcement to try to force DeFi into a regulatory framework that doesn’t fit—all while refusing to provide clear rules or a path to compliance,” he posted on X. “This is a huge win, not just for Uniswap Labs but for DeFi as a whole.”

          Gemini Trust

A two-year investigation into Gemini Trust about the unregistered sale of securities ended last week without an enforcement action from the Commission.

Gemini co-founder Cameron Winklevoss noted the milestone, but said that it “does little to make up for the damage this agency has done to us, our industry, and America.”

Winklevoss estimated that the regulator cost his firm “tens of millions in legal fees and hundreds of millions in lost productivity, creativity, and innovation.”

          Justin Sun/Tron

Like Binance, Justin Sun and Tron filed a joint motion alongside the SEC to temporarily stay the regulator’s case in the hopes of finding a resolution.

The case stems back to 2023 when the SEC alleged that Sun made more than 600,000 wash trades to create misleading Tron (TRX) volumes that led to around $32 million in profits. The joint filing indicates a resolution would be beneficial on account of “conserving judicial resources.”

          Consensys

MetaMask and Linea parent company, Consensys, said that the Commission has agreed to put an end to its lawsuit against the company, which focused on staking features within MetaMask.

The dismissal has been agreed to in principle, but requires approval from commissioners—similar to the regulator’s activity with Coinbase.

“We were committed to fighting this suit until the bitter end but welcome this outcome,” said Consensys founder and CEO Joseph Lubin on X. “Now we can get 100% back to building. 2025 is going to be the best year yet for Ethereum and Consensys.”

(Disclosure: Consensys is one of 22 investors in an editorially independent Decrypt.)
