Get ready to return to the Belt. Owlcat Games, the master storytellers behind acclaimed cRPGs like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, have announced a brand-new project: The Expanse: Osiris Reborn.
It comes in partnership with Alcon Interactive Group, as this new narrative third-person action RPG is set in the universe of the beloved TV series and novels. And it is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
You may know of The Expanse too, thanks to a Telltale series adventure.
This announcement confirms Owlcat’s first major foray into a hard sci-fi action RPG, promising a mature, character-driven story where player choice truly matters.
From Golarion to the Belt: A New Frontier for Owlcat
While known for their deep, isometric cRPGs, Owlcat Games is bringing its passion for complex narratives to a new genre and a new universe. The studio considers The Expanse: Osiris Reborn its flagship project, with a completely separate team dedicated to ensuring its excellence without impacting other titles.
“We’ve been dreaming about building a sci-fi action RPG of this scale for a long time, and The Expanse is the perfect universe to bring that vision to life,” says Owlcat’s Creative Director, Alexander Mishulin. “It’s a world grounded in realism and complexity, perfect for telling a story the way we like it — mature and character-driven, where your choices truly matter. We are excited to bring this new experience to our players and look forward to sharing more soon, especially knowing how many questions our fans will have.”
A Mercenary’s Story
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn delivers a completely original story set within the gritty, politically charged world of the show. You play as a Pinkwater Security mercenary who finds themselves stranded in the wrong place at the worst possible time: Eros Station, during a deadly lockdown.
From there, you must lead a crew, take command of the solar system’s most advanced ship, and navigate a fractured society teetering on the edge of all-out war. To bring the world to life, some actors from the acclaimed TV show will be returning to their iconic roles.
Building on the Legacy of Mass Effect
The team at Owlcat is open about its inspirations, citing one of the most beloved sci-fi RPGs of all time as a key touchstone for this new project.
“The original Mass Effect trilogy was absolutely an inspiration to the team. It was iconic for the Xbox 360 generation of gamers. Many of us first played it in our teenage years, and it left a lasting impression,” says Yuliya Chernenko, Game Design Producer. “We are building on that legacy and expanding what players anticipate from this experience. Our story is deeply rooted in hard science fiction — one of the core reasons The Expanse universe resonates so well with its fans. The combat reflects the standards of modern action gameplay. The narrative emphasizes political tension and moral complexity. And yes — there’s romance too.”
