5 Reasons To Visit Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht

Hyatt’s designer brand Andaz has a supreme location in Amsterdam, and its latest design incarnation has helped it become the poster child for other Andaz hotels around the world. The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht brings in a quirky and fun design into what was once the city’s former public library. The ethos of the Andaz brand is to live “like no one’s watching.” In other words, be yourself and live your best life with no regrets. Staying in a hotel with such a fun design provides inspiration for guests and staff to do just that. Here are the top five reasons to visit the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht.

The design

World-famous Dutch designer Marcel Wanders lent his talents to this exciting hotel. From the modern artwork meant to stir up conversation to the hidden details like monkeys and historical characters dressed in modern-day attire, you can’t help but smile everywhere you turn.

If you have flown KLM, you are familiar with Wanders’ talents designing the crockery and serviceware. Each room here also has one of Wanders’ ceramic plates on display. Other touches include a fabulous mural facing the entrance and numerous statues and pieces of modern art that pay homage to well-known Dutch literature.

The huge bells hanging in the lobby encase beautiful chandeliers. There seems to be a surprise at every turn. Delft blue patterns are notable along the walls and carpeting, and a video art installation dominates one wall in the lobby.

The hotel is a mix of buildings with the front façade facing the canal. Farther inside, guests cross through a glass walkway with an outdoor patio that seems like an oasis from the bustling street in front. It leads to another building with additional rooms. While canal-facing rooms are in high demand, rooms overlooking the courtyard are quiet and enjoyable, especially due to windows that open.

One level below the lobby is a well-equipped fitness center and spa that offers massage and beauty treatments popular with both guests and locals.

The food

Prins & Aap, which the hotel dubs a barstro (mix between bar and bistro), serves a modern take on Dutch cuisine in its canal-facing location. By day, the space is the lobby lounge where guests can order coffee or work on laptops while they watch the world go by. Mirrors cleverly placed on either side of the windows expand upon the view of the comings and goings.

Later in the day, the space becomes a cocktail bar and eventually the dinner restaurant. My bitterballen (fried Dutch veal or meat puffs) were delicious, and I found the crowd to be a mix of locals, hotel guests and business travelers like me tapping away on laptops.

It’s not every day that locals book ahead for a hotel restaurant, but this place has developed a strong following. I rounded out the evening with an incredible Dutch cheese and charcuterie board that was enough for four people. To be fair, many of the menu items are designed to be shared.

The menu is a series of books (another library reference) with creative stories sharing the inspiration behind each cocktail. On weekends, count on special events like a popular drag bingo to add energy to this already vibrant space.

A glassed-in dining room is the breakfast restaurant serving an a la carte menu with dishes like shakshuka and a yummy avocado tofu bowl. The buffet features an assortment of Dutch cheeses, pastries and of course the famous stroopwafels. I really liked how they were packaged so you could grab a few for later in the day.

The rooms

Guest rooms here are as energetic and humorous as the public areas. It starts with a ride up in glass elevators that pass murals of bookshelves with funny titles and categories (an homage to the building’s former life as a library). On each floor, you will discover more of the infamous statues, a reference to “The Prince of Lost Dreams,” for whom the canal facing the hotel is named.

Dim hallways lead to bright guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and massive images behind the comfy beds. They vary by room, and mine had an enormous goldfish staring back at me. Curving lamps sit by coffee tables with the hotel’s famous throne chairs tucked into the corner.

Wide desks provide ample place to stretch out your belongings or work with numerous power outlets there and bedside. Plush duvets and gigantic pillows assure sound rest. Closets have umbrellas and luggage racks built into them.

An Andaz perk is that non-alcoholic minibars are free and come with snacks like popcorn, bottled water and sodas. This property even comps local beer as part of the deal.

The rooms here are unusual in that many have the vanity area exposed to the guest room with hand-painted, above-counter sinks the star. Stacks of towels, a standing vanity mirror and locally made toiletries from Liza Witte in eco-friendly pump bottles are nearby.

Water closets have wallpaper featuring various historical facts and drawings that will have some travelers spending longer than they need to there. It’s quite interesting and entertaining. One-way glass showers have excellent water pressure.

Numerous suite categories are in the mix, including some with enormous bathrooms featuring tubs facing a TV and separate living areas. Not all rooms have the open-plan baths, and modest guests should ask ahead about this.

The perks

Like other Andaz properties, there is an evening experience that offers a local taste to guests. Here, guests can enjoy special cocktails using Dutch genever and learn more about the spirit’s history. This takes place in the lobby and is complimentary for all guests.

During check-in, guests are also welcomed with a beverage of their choice, another Andaz signature. Andaz is part of World of Hyatt, and members can earn or redeem their points for a stay here. Top-tier Globalist members receive extra benefits like complimentary breakfast for two each morning, late checkout and potential room upgrades based upon availability.

The hotel even has its own canal boat that guests can book for private city tours while they enjoy a range of drinks and snacks sailing through the city.

The location

Amsterdam is a great walking (and biking) city, and the hotel’s location is ideal for that. It sits between two major canals the Prinsengracht (the Princes canal in English) and the Keizersgracht (and the Emperors canal), you can easily walk to major sights from here. As a result, the hotel sees a lot of leisure visitors, but also business travelers that appreciate the unique décor here.

With many luxury hotels in the city, Andaz stands out for its youthful and unique design. For a boutique hotel feeling, but with independent spirit, it is hard to go wrong here.

Wastage — The Price of Fast Fashion

0
Wastage — The Price of Fast Fashion

With a market value of USD 136 billion in 2024 and estimated to reach USD 184 billion by 2027, fast fashion is a major money-maker in the industry. But with that, comes consequences. Its business model rests on producing cheap, seasonal clothes at lightning speed, resulting in both overproduction and overconsumption. According to Greenpeace, around 100 billion garments are produced each year while 92 million tonnes end up in landfills. The fact of the matter is that the world has more clothes than is needed, leaving behind massive amounts of waste, and impacting global economies and environments.

The Evolution of Fast Fashion

While it is now considered a global phenomenon, the mass popularity of “fast” fashion did not become mainstream until the founding of Zara. The Spanish retailer by businessman Amancio Ortega first opened in 1975, offering cheaper alternatives to higher-end clothing. In the 1980s, Ortega reduced the store’s design-to-retail process to just five weeks — an unprecedented speed for the industry at the time.

Ortega’s business model revolutionised the state of fashion, with companies like H&M and Mango adopting the same manufacturing-to-retail process. During the pandemic, fast fashion experienced a boom, coupled with social media-driven microtrends, giving rise to e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu — which have now pushed speed and affordability to new extremes.

Although fast fashion started as a way to optimise clothing production, it has now extended beyond retail, creating what a Vox article once called a “disposable society.”

An Unsustainable Supply Chain

Keeping the price of clothing cheap comes at the cost of the entire fast fashion supply chain. Labour and production are carried out without care for quality control or resource conservation. Just this year, Shein came under fire for labour exploitation — Guangzhou factory workers for Shein suppliers were found to be working 75-hour weeks, as reported by Swiss human rights group Public Eye. The investigation also found that many workers were being paid below the living wage (around RMB 6,500) in China.

On an environmental front, fast fashion is a large offender. The sheer amount of clothing produced requires mass amounts of materials, electricity, and water. An article from the science journal Nature found that the industry produces 92 million tonnes of waste and uses 79 trillion litres of water. Shein —  which was declared fashion’s biggest polluter in 2023 by Yale University — emitted around 16.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions in that year alone.

The Role of Consumers

Not everything can solely be blamed on the industry’s production. The rise of influencer culture —  combined with social media trends — has made it easier to be swept up in the excitement of new, trendy products. Merchandise that becomes viral is often bought and sold out in large waves, leading to high demand. But some trends go as quickly as they come, leading to a “buy now, wear once” culture. A Guardian article from this year stated that out of the 100 billion garments produced each year, 10 to 40 percent remain unsold.

However, this may be a sign of a change to come. In 2023, the “de-influencing” trend emerged on TikTok, with users dissuading others from simply buying products for the sake of it. Thrifting and upcycling old clothes are also popular topics on social media, particularly among Gen Z. While these efforts are admirable, they might be coming too late.

Beyond Fast Fashion

Textile pollution on a beach in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

On the surface, fast fashion has glaring issues with wastage and overproduction. What is not as obvious is how consequential and invasive the industry has become. The abundance of fast fashion clothing not only ends up in landfills but also in thrift stores, slowly destroying the global clothing industry ecosystem.

While donating clothes might seem like a socially responsible act, it has now become an alternative way for consumers to get rid of their excess clothes. One only has to look at nonprofit organisations like Salvation Army, which cannot keep up with the overwhelming amount of clothes donated. In fact, due to the poor quality of fast fashion pieces, the majority of pieces are unable to be sold. Instead, only around 10 to 30 percent of donated clothing are resold, as reported by GQ. The rest are shipped off to the Global South.

Accra, Ghana contains one of the most polluted waterways on Earth — not due to local pollution, but because of secondhand clothing imports from Western countries. According to The Guardian, about 15 million pieces of clothing are imported weekly, many of which end up along the country’s shores. Stained denim and ripped t-shirts lie atop one another, the mountain of rubbish so large that Ghanaian houses must be built on top of the waste. The phenomenon has become so rampant, that locals have taken to calling it “broni wawu“, meaning “dead white man’s clothes.” According to statistics from Earth.Org, nearly 10 percent of microplastics dispersed in the ocean each year come from textiles

Ghana is not just physically affected but also economically. The country’s once thriving local textile production industry collapsed in the 1990s — at the same time it started accepting secondhand clothing imports from the United States, Europe, and China. AP News reported that a number of African countries are working to ban such imports but to little effect.

Is There a Solution?

“Sustainability” as a concept is something that the fashion industry has been working towards for years, though it is easier said than done. The World Economic Forum found that 98 percent of CEOs see sustainability and profitability as a trade-off — one cannot exist at the same time as another.

Within the fashion industry, leading brands are turning towards technology as the answer. Last year, British designer Stella McCartney was awarded an Order of the British Empire for her brand’s commitment to sustainability. Since 2001, the brand has slowly phased out PVC materials and now uses 100 percent of renewable energy to power its Bond Street flagship in London. For fast fashion companies, a recent Forbes article suggested using AI to “calculate estimated product volumes” in order to avoid overproducing a garment.

However, societal behaviour remains the biggest challenge. Fast fashion historically thrives during times of economic hardship, simply because it is the cheapest option. Meanwhile, the relentless push of social media advertising keeps consumers buying. It is not just about re-wearing more or buying less — it is about reforming a system that prioritises profit over people and the planet.

Seelenseide’s Silk Scarves: Wearable Art for the Modern Muse – The Luxury Lifestyle Magazine

“Fashion, at its best, does not just clothe; it tells stories,” says Laila Regalado, founder of Seelenseide. Regalado’s brand is anchored by its luxurious silk scarves, which are becoming a quiet breakthrough in the fashion industry. Seelenseide offers pieces that do not just satisfy aesthetics but also challenge conventional thinking around fashion and waste.

The Art of Draping Stories

Fashion has always been an expressive medium, but Seelenseide elevates it to new heights with its silk scarves. These are accessories and also canvases, each with designs that range from ethereal watercolors to striking abstract prints.

Drawing inspiration from nature, art, and cultural heritage, Laila Regalado describes them as “an intimate dialogue between the wearer and the world.” The designs are created in collaboration with artists worldwide, lending the brand a cosmopolitan flair that appeals to trendsetters and traditionalists.

Made from sustainably sourced mulberry silk, Seelenside’s Silk Scraves adhere to ethical production practices, As the fashion industry reckons with its role in climate change, brands like Seelenseide are already on a hopeful shift.

Fashion Trends: Revival and Resilience

Seelenseide as scarves have made a notable comeback, gracing the runways of Paris, Milan, and New York in 2024.  Yet, the brand is not content to follow trends. Laila Regalado notes, “Our scarves are designed to be used in all seasons, resisting the fast-fashion churn. They’re pieces to be treasured, not tossed.”

The 2024 consumer wants more from fashion than surface appeal; they seek meaning. This is Seelenseide’s philosophy. The scarves are an ode to endangered landscapes, a celebration of forgotten artisanship—that imbue them with deeper value.

Worn knotted at the neck, draped over shoulders, or tied around handbags, these scarves are versatile but also potent symbols of identity and intention. Laila Regalado recounts stories from customers who have used the scarves to mark milestones: “One client wore hers to her wedding as a veil alternative. Another framed it as art. The versatility and sentimentality of these scarves go far beyond fashion.”

A Legacy in the Making

Relatively, Seelenseide is still a young brand with room for growth, but its impact is undeniable. Its online presence, amplified by a sleek e-commerce platform and curated social media campaigns, has allowed it to reach a global audience. To that effect, Laila Regalado is candid about her ambitions: “I want our brand to redefine what luxury means—not as something unattainable but as something meaningful.”

In fast fashion and fleeting trends, Seelenseide’s image feels radical yet refreshing. Its emphasis on sustainability, artistry, and emotional connection may set the tone for the industry’s future. Laila Regalado notes, “Fashion should inspire, provoke, and endure. That is the legacy I want Seelenseide to leave behind.”

What is ERC-404? ERC-404 Features – Metaverseplanet.net

ERC is an acronym for Ethereum Request for Comment and refers to the token standards on theThe Ethereum (ETH) network is home to numerous token standards that guide how crypto assets are created and managed. Among these, the ERC-20 standard has been the foundation for many altcoins in the cryptocurrency market. However, a new token standard, ERC-404, has recently gained attention due to its unique features and innovative design.

In this article, we will explore:

What is ERC-404?

What are the ERC-404 features?

What are ERC-404 tokens?

Is ERC-404 worth investing in?

What Is ERC-404?

ERC-404 is an experimental and innovative Ethereum NFT standard that merges characteristics of NFTs (ERC-721), which are non-fungible tokens, and fungible tokens (ERC-20). This unique combination allows a token to be both fungible and non-fungible depending on its use case.

At the time of writing, ERC-404 is not officially listed as an Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) and has yet to be approved by the Ethereum community. Its potential, however, has sparked significant interest in the cryptocurrency world.

What Are the ERC-404 Features?

The ERC-404 standard introduces a concept called semi-fungible tokens, blending the benefits of both ERC-20 and ERC-721 token standards. This unique design opens up new possibilities for developers and users by enhancing Ethereum’s functionality.

Key Features of ERC-404 Tokens:

1. Improved Interoperability

ERC-404 tokens can interact seamlessly with protocols in both the fungible token and NFT spaces, bridging these previously separate ecosystems. For instance, ERC-404 tokens can be used as collateral in DeFi protocols while also being traded on NFT marketplaces.

2. Flexibility

The ability to switch between fungible and non-fungible forms creates exciting opportunities for dynamic and interactive NFTs. Token developers can design tokens that change status and value based on specific events or actions.

3. Low Transaction Costs

ERC-404 tokens support mass transfers, allowing users to send multiple tokens to multiple addresses in a single transaction. This reduces transfer costs and enhances transaction security by verifying token ownership before executing transfers.

4. Increased Liquidity

Since ERC-404 tokens can be traded as fungible tokens on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), they offer improved liquidity compared to standard NFTs. This solves the common issue of low trading volume and high price volatility faced by conventional NFTs.

Most Popular ERC-404 Tokens

Despite being experimental, ERC-404 tokens are gaining traction among developers. Some of the most notable tokens using this standard include:

Pandora (PANDORA): Market cap over $150 million, considered the first and most popular ERC-404 token.

404 Bakery (BAKE): Known for its creative approach in DeFi.

Asterix Labs (ASTX): A promising experimental project.

DeFrogs (DEFROGS): Focused on decentralized finance.

YES (YES): A versatile token in the ERC-404 ecosystem.

What Is the PANDORA Token?

Pandora (PANDORA) is recognized as the first ERC-404 token and remains the most popular one today. Each PANDORA token holder receives a corresponding NFT collection copy for every token they own. Its detailed features and development roadmap can be explored further through its whitepaper.

Is ERC-404 Worth Investing In?

Since February 2024, ERC-404 has become one of the hottest topics in the cryptocurrency world. Naturally, many investors are asking, “Is it worth investing in ERC-404 tokens?”

At this stage, it is too early to provide a definite answer. The ERC-404 standard holds potential for expanding Ethereum’s ecosystem and unlocking new DeFi opportunities. However, its experimental nature comes with uncertainties and potential technical challenges. Investors should approach it cautiously and stay informed about its development progress.
