CFTC to Review Prediction Markets in Public Roundtable – Decrypt

CFTC to Review Prediction Markets in Public Roundtable – Decrypt

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission will hold a public roundtable in the coming weeks to review its regulatory approach to prediction markets, a move that could affect platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket.

The roundtable will follow the agency’s request for information on sports-related event contracts and is intended to gather input from market participants, legal experts, and industry stakeholders.

Discussions will examine the legality of event contracts under the Commodity Exchange Act, consumer protection concerns, and potential regulatory changes, according to a statement on Wednesday.

Acting Chairman Caroline D. Pham criticized the commission’s previous stance, calling it a “sinkhole of legal uncertainty” that has hindered innovation, per the statement.

Kalshi, a CFTC-regulated designated contract market, has faced regulatory obstacles, including the agency’s decision to block its proposal for election-related contracts in 2023. Polymarket, which operates on Ethereum, was fined $1.4 million in 2022 for offering unregistered swaps.

Common-sense approach

Under Biden, the CFTC cracked down on event contracts and unregistered platforms, Pham said, with former Chair Rostin Behnam expanding oversight of crypto derivatives and DeFi.

In response, Pham said the CFTC must take a forward-looking approach while maintaining oversight to protect consumers from fraud and abusive practices.

“Unfortunately, the undue delay and anti-innovation policies of the past several years have severely restricted the CFTC’s ability to pivot to common-sense regulation of prediction markets,” she said.

Crystal ball

During the 2024 U.S. presidential election cycle, Polymarket saw significant trading volume, with traders using it to track the likelihood of Donald Trump securing the Republican nomination and subsequent presidential victory on November 5.

Polymarket became a key barometer of sentiment throughout the Trump campaign, with traders responding rapidly to shifts in polling data, legal proceedings, and key endorsements.

The company’s CEO, Shayne Coplan, was later targeted in a law enforcement raid on November 14, with authorities seizing his phone and electronics.

A spokesperson at the time characterized the move to Decrypt as “political retribution,” claiming Coplan was being singled out after Polymarket users correctly predicted Trump’s win.

With Trump now in office, Pham sees prediction markets as a “new frontier” for harnessing market sentiment to gauge probabilities and enhance information accuracy in the digital age.

The roundtable will take place at the CFTC’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., with further details to be announced. Public comments and participation requests are due by February 21, the regulator said.

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna’s Blood Vile Tainted – Finn’s Results False?

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna’s Blood Vile Tainted – Finn’s Results False?

Bold and the Beautiful has Finn seeing it with his own two eyes, Luna Nozawa is his daughter, as the paternity test indicates on the CBS soap. He has done the test not once, but twice. Then he puts both tests in Poppy Nozawa’s face. But, Bill Spencer is still in the picture as he secretly houses the murderous woman without any feasible reason offered.

Bold and the Beautiful: Finn Goes Ballistic on Poppy Nozawa

On Bold and the Beautiful this week, Poppy Nozawa (Romy Park) swears she didn’t know all these years that Finn (Tanner Novlan) is Luna Nozawa‘s (Lisa Yamada) father. Poppy said she suspected Tom Starr (Clint Howard) was the man who got her pregnant a couple of decades ago.

But she also wondered if Luna’s father was Finn, but feared to go there. So, from what Poppy said, she buried her head in the sand, not wanting to know if it was Finn because if she did, he could have ruined his life.

Bold and the Beautiful: Finn - John Finnegan (Tanner Novlan - Poppy Nozawa (Romy Park)
    B&B | CBS

Finn has a different take on being Luna Nozawa’s father. He is furious that he had a daughter all these years and was never told about it. Above he holds two paternity tests that show a match for Poppy to see. So he vows there is no mistake… but is there?

B&B: Luna Nozawa’s Daddy Storyline Squeezed Dry for Drama?

Bold and the Beautiful can get more bang for their buck if they go with Finn as Luna’s father for a while. He can suffer all the pitfalls, with Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) likely leaving Finn. She likely can’t take another murderous relative surfacing.

Then there’s the war that will without a doubt breakout between Li Finnegan (Naomi Matsuda) and her sister. Poppy’s deed with her nephew will be looked at as disgusting. Despite no blood relations between Finn and Poppy, it probably still borders on taboo for some family members.

So, if Bold and the Beautiful can play this out for a while and then offer a spin, they get double the plot out of finding Luna’s father. So somehow if this theory holds, Finn discovers he is not Luna’s father, as the tests were wrong.

Bold and the Beautiful: Finn Uses Luna’s Tainted Blood – Unbeknownst to Him

Bold and the Beautiful has Bill Spencer acting so strangely. Some fans think it is because he did his own test and knows he is Luna Nozawa’s father. But while he can’t let her stay in jail, he certainly can’t let his family know she is there. And if she is his daughter, he can’t let that get out.

So, how could Finn not be Luna’s father after he ran two paternity tests to make sure?  From one theory, Finn could run 100 tests using that same vile of Luna Nozawa’s blood and always get a match. This is the vile that Li also used when she jabbed Jack Finnegan (Ted King) to see if he was Luna’s father.

Bold and the Beautiful might have played out that scene with Jack for another reason. Fans got to see Li taking blood from Jack and the vile of blood labeled Luna Nozawa together for her test.

B&B Gets More Bang for Their Buck?

In Li’s state of mind, she could have very easily cross-contaminated Luna’s blood with the blood she took from Jack. If so, every time Finn does a paternity test using that vile of blood, it shows a match. But that match found would be for Finn and his father, Jack.

Bold and the Beautiful: Finn - John Finnegan (Tanner Novlan - Bill Spencer (Don Diamont)Bold and the Beautiful: Finn - John Finnegan (Tanner Novlan - Bill Spencer (Don Diamont)
    B&B | CBS

So, B&B may have found a way to offer viewers the entertainment factor of watching Finn fall apart once finding he has a twenty-year-old daughter. Then when all the juice is squeezed out of that storyline, the soap may hop over to Bill Spencer.

Then he too would face life-altering drama with Luna Nozawa as his daughter. Sure, this is far-fetched, but this is also Bold and Beautiful. And as the fans know, taking liberties is par for the course.

So, is Finn really Luna Nozawa’s father, or will the soap finally make the dad Bill Spencer? If so, this would explain the publishing giant’s strange behavior on the CBS soap.

Meghan Markle Donated Clothes to Teen Wildfire Victims

Meghan Markle secretly took “styling lessons” ahead of volunteering for a teenage charity where she outfitted young girls affected by the recent wildfires on the West Coast — and donated “tons” of clothes and accessories to young women who, in the aftermath, had lost everything.

In an exclusive article published in Marie Claire earlier this week, 14-year-old Avery Colvert, founder of the Altadena Girls Recovery Fund, told the outlet that she was so overwhelmed by the devastation that recently swept Southern California, she knew she had to do something.

What she didn’t expect was for the Duchess of Sussex, 37, and the Archewell Foundation to lend a hand in what she says has turned her charity into a full-blown nonprofit with plans to expand.

“I felt really bad that I didn’t lose my home because almost everybody I knew lost everything in the fire,” Colvert shared with the outlet. “Their homes, their cars, their everything, all their stuff.”

Related: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Charitable Work Throughout the Years

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have always been proponents of giving back. Charity has played a huge part in their relationship, both while they were senior members of the British royal family and since they announced their decision to step back in January 2020. Two years before Harry met Meghan in 2016, he organized the […]

In the immediate aftermath of the wildfires, Colvert began collecting essential items and clothing for local wildfire victims. She, along with her stepdad, Matt Chait, then conceived a plan.

“We would collect some clothes from whomever will donate” and “have a little bit of a free fair for one day,” Colvert explained. Thinking like your typical teenager, she decided to include products like skincare, accessories and makeup — “exactly what a teenage girl would want.”

The initiative quickly garnered support from celebrities like Demi Lovato, Paris Hilton, Ariana Grande, Kerry Washington, Charli XCX and Bella Hadid. However, it was Markle’s direct involvement and commitment that made the greatest impact, according to Colvert, as she told the publication.

The Duchess not only donated fashions and accessories, she also dedicated hours of her time to personally style the young women impacted. Markle even secretly undertook personal styling lessons so that she would be better equipped at guiding the young women and girls when selecting outfits, which Colvert said helped them regain “confidence and sense of self.”

“For all the girls that were coming in, they got to be styled by Meghan Markle,” Colvert explained to Marie Claire, highlighting the emotional impact of the Duchess’s presence, noting some of the young women were moved to tears upon meeting the former Suits actor and avid humanitarian.

The support from Prince Harry and Markle’s Archewell Foundation went beyond immediate sartorial aid. The foundation played a crucial role in securing a new, larger 12,000-square-foot office space for the charity in Pasadena, allowing the fund to transition into a full-time non-profit.

Markle’s work with the fund mirrors her dedication to fashion-focused philanthropy. As patron of Smart Works, a U.K.-based charity providing interview clothing for women of all ages who are seeking employment, she has continued her support even after relocating to the United States.

In a message celebrating Smart Works’ 10th anniversary in September 2023, she released a statement that emphasized the charity’s holistic approach. “You provide much more than a handout, at Smart Works you provide a hand held,” she said.

Markle also launched a limited-edition clothing line in 2019, collaborating with mission-focused brands, like Marks & Spencer and John Lewis. Her endorsement with Scottish handbag label Strathberry, has led to significant profit increase, per an MSN article published on Tuesday, February 4.

Whatever Markle is wearing tends to sell out in record time. No doubt her pro bono personal styling sessions with the teenagers at the Altadena Girls Recovery Fund made them like a real-life royal for a day. A charitable and chic cause, indeed.

Steam Adds A New Warning For Dead Early Access Games Like Unsung Story

Steam Adds A New Warning For Dead Early Access Games Like Unsung Story

      Image: Valve / Kotaku

Have you ever come across an Early Access game on Steam, decided it looked pretty cool and downloaded it, only to realize it was kind of busted and never getting updated again? It’s long been a topic among PC players, and Valve now has a new tool to hopefully reduce such occurrences. A warning on Steam pages for Early Access games will now tell prospective buyers how long it’s been since the game was last updated.

As SteamDB pointed out earlier today, the revised warning appears inside the big blue Early Access box. In addition to including statements from the game’s developer about why the game is in Early Access rather than just being released upon completion and how long it will be until the game is expected to ship, a string of orange text now also indicates how many months or years it’s been since the last update went live. “The information and timeline described by the developers here may no longer be up to date,” a disclaimer reads.

It’s still not exactly clear what updates are substantial enough to reset the counter and how long it takes between updates for it to appear. Open-world survival zombie sim Project Zomboid has been in Early Access on Steam for over a decade and doesn’t show the new warning because it still receives regular updates. Its last one was in January.

A screenshot shows a Steam Early Access warning.

Screenshot: SteamDB / Bluesky / Kotaku

Mostly, the new warning seems geared at indicating when Early Access games have been effectively abandoned. Unsung Story, the controversial Kickstarter project once posing as the spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics which never got completed, has a label indicating it’s been abandoned for four years now. Prior to this update, Steam users would have had to click through to the reviews section to read other users mentioning whether a project was still in development or not.

It’s another feature designed to help Steam users navigate its massive and unwieldy library of games—19,000 new games were released on it in 2024 alone—especially as more and more games, including high-profile ones like Hyper Light Breaker and Hades 2, opt for Early Access releases. The new warning arrives just a few months after Valve also started cracking down on developers promising DLC and battle pass content that never materializes.

Blake Lively Hit With $6 Million Defamation Lawsuit From Justin Baldoni’s PR Firm

Blake Lively Hit With Million Defamation Lawsuit From Justin Baldoni’s PR Firm

        Reading Time: 3 minutes

Another shot has been fired in the ongoing Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni legal battle.

A PR firm representing Baldoni has now filed a defamation lawsuit against Lively seeking punitive damages in an amount of “not less than $6,000,000.”

The suit alleges that Lively damaged the reputation of CEO Jed Wallace and his crisis management firm, Street Relations Inc., when she mentioned them in her initial civil complaint against Baldoni.

As Fox News points out, Lively did not name the parties in her formal lawsuit.

But Wallace claims that the actress’ decision to name Wallace and Street Relations in her initial complaint with the State of California Civil Rights Department did sufficient damage.

        The Latest Allegations

“Neither Wallace nor Street had anything to do with the alleged sexual harassment, retaliation, failure to investigate or aiding and abetting the alleged harassment or alleged retaliation,” the lawsuit reads.

“Neither could they have breached a contract with Lively because no such contract exists.”

The suit goes on to allege that Lively’s claims “made with either negligence or ‘actual malice’” have caused “millions of dollars in reputational harm including both general and special damages through emotional harm (Wallace), actual damages and real and projected loss of business (Wallace and Street) in an amount that exceeds $1,000,000.”

        An Ongoing Battle

The legal wrangling began in December when Lively sued Baldoni for sexual harassment.

Baldoni quickly filed a countersuit accusing Lively of defamation.

The actress responded by alleging that Baldoni was trying to silence her through legal action.

Blake’s attorneys continued that line of attack today, accusing Street and Wallace of attempting to score a victory in the court of public opinion.

“Another day, another state, another nine-figure lawsuit seeking to sue Ms. Lively ‘into oblivion’ for speaking out against sexual harassment and retaliation,” reads a statement from Lively’s legal team.

“This is not just a publicity stunt — it is transparent retaliation in response to allegations contained within a sexual harassment and retaliation complaint that Ms. Lively filed with the California Civil Rights Department. While this lawsuit will be dismissed, we are pleased that Mr. Wallace has finally emerged from the shadows, and that he too will be held accountable in federal court.”

Needless to say, it seems that the war between these former co-stars is just beginning.

We’ll have further updates on this developing story as new information becomes available.

Coronation Street follow-up: As David and Leanne are arrested on suspicion of arson, here’s all we know about their fate

Coronation Street follow-up: As David and Leanne are arrested on suspicion of arson, here’s all we know about their fate

David and Leanne found themselves facing consequences of the Platt fire in Coronation Street tonight. But as both of them are arrested, what happens next?

The destruction of the Platt house has finally happened after months of teasers. But a few days later and fans still don’t know who actually started it – despite many suspects.

Tonight’s episode (Wednesday, February 5) however, gave us some answers on David’s whereabouts. But then both he and Leanne got arrested. So let’s take a look at what we know happens next.

Leanne woke up with matches (Credit: ITV)

David and Leanne arrested for Coronation Street fire

As one of the main suspects for the fire, David’s story started to unravel. After Todd recognised Andy as a friend of Paul’s from prison, he informed Sarah. Soon enough the news was spreading and everyone began thinking David had something to do with it.

But at the hospital waiting for Max to be taken off his ventilator, David told Shona the truth. He was actually a getaway driver for a warehouse job with Andy. And as they argued about it, Kit arrived to bring him in for questioning. All thanks to Nick.

Elsewhere Leanne confided in Steve (after he made her) about how she doesn’t actually know where she was when the fire took place.

She admitted she lied about being at Oliver’s grave, and explained she woke up with a packet of matches in her pocket after throwing vodka at the house where Toyah was. Despite insisting she used them to light a candle for Oliver, Steve tried to persuade her to go to the police.

Realising she hadn’t listened to him, Steve then reveals all to Tracy, who wastes no time in outing Leanne’s lies to the entire pub, where Sarah overheard the whole thing (guess we can truly say goodbye to their friendship).

At the end of tonight’s episode, Max opened his eyes and asked Shona where David was. But before we saw her answer, the camera flipped to Leanne being brought into the station by Kit.

Nick suspected David had something to do with it (Credit: ITV)

          What happens next?

While Coronation Street isn’t on the rest of the week (thanks a lot, football!), spoilers for next week show Leanne is no longer in custody.

Spoilers show that Leanne feels down as she waits for the police to decide whether or not she will be charged as forensics look at some new evidence.

But while she is out and about, the same can’t be said for David, who is still in custody.

Kevin shows Nick and Shona the CCTV footage of the person who started the fire, but Shona is horrified at what she sees, quickly trying to cover it up.

Adam then tries to get Kit to release David as he doesn’t have any actual evidence that he was the one who started the fire. And even Nick feels guilty for ever suspecting he could do it.

It seems to work, as David is soon back in the pub meeting up with Andy – which doesn’t seem like a great idea. Andy hands him £2K for his part in the robbery. But when he offers him an even bigger job, will David accept? Or will he know to walk away?

The former CNN host says he’s long thought celebrities should have more tools to punch back against hit pieces … and he’s glad Justin is standing his ground here.

Exploring the Directorial Journey of Ben Affleck: A Cinematic Odyssey

              Introduction: Ben Affleck’s Hollywood Legacy

Ben Affleck’s Hollywood journey is nothing short of extraordinary. From clinching the youngest-ever Academy Award for Best Screenplay alongside his buddy Matt Damon to donning the roles of Daredevil and Batman, Affleck’s versatile career is a captivating narrative. One aspect of his career that often takes a back seat is his directorial prowess. Today, we delve into the world of Ben Affleck’s directorial ventures, ranking them to shed light on the evolution of his craft.

Ben Affleck’s Directorial Repertoire: A Comprehensive Ranking

              5. Live By Night (2016)

Venturing into Dennis Lehane’s material once again, Affleck adapted the Prohibition-era crime drama Live By Night. Despite a stellar cast featuring Zoe Saldaña, Elle Fanning, Chris Cooper, and Brendan Gleeson, the movie falls short. It lacks the intrigue found in other Prohibition-era films like Road to Perdition and The Untouchables. While it’s unfair to pit it against such giants, Affleck, known for phenomenal movies, seems to have missed the mark with this one.

              4. Air (2023)

In his 2023 movie, Air, Affleck takes on a fact-based premise, exploring the genesis of the Air Jordan brand. Starring alongside Matt Damon, the film delves into the intricacies of whether Michael Jordan would partner with Nike, unraveling the story behind Air Jordans. Despite an engaging narrative and Affleck’s adept direction, the absence of Jordan’s character might leave fans yearning for more. Nevertheless, Air succeeds as a captivating tale of how the iconic brand came to life.

              3. The Town (2010)

Adapted from Chuck Hogan’s novel Prince of Thieves, The Town may seem, at first glance, like a heist film reminiscent of Point Break. However, it transcends expectations, offering a taut drama delving into the inner turmoil of lifelong thieves. Affleck’s direction shines as characters, especially portrayed by Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively, feel fully realized. The film also doubles as a love letter to Boston, adding an extra layer to the narrative.

              2. Gone Baby Gone (2007)

In Gone Baby Gone, Affleck showcases his directorial prowess with the adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s story. Starring alongside Michelle Monaghan, the film revolves around two private investigators searching for a missing girl amidst potential police corruption. The pacing is a masterstroke, creating a riveting experience comparable to some of cinema’s greats. Affleck’s directorial debut is a testament to his storytelling finesse.

              1. Argo (2012)

The pinnacle of Affleck’s directorial achievements, Argo, defies historical drama norms with its breezy approach. Chronicling the U.S. government’s daring plan to rescue hostages from Iran by creating a fake sci-fi movie, the film is a masterpiece. Despite playing loosely with facts, Argo earned Best Picture, yet Affleck was shockingly overlooked for Best Director. The film seamlessly balances tension and humor, making it one of the finest historical dramas, even if not entirely accurate.

Looking Ahead: The Ghost Army Beckons

As we celebrate Affleck’s directorial journey, anticipation brews for his next project, Ghost Army. While details are scarce, one thing is certain – the cinematic world eagerly awaits Affleck’s next directorial venture. Stay tuned for more updates on the enigmatic Ben Affleck’s cinematic exploits!

In conclusion, Ben Affleck’s directorial repertoire showcases a dynamic range, from gripping crime dramas to historical masterpieces. As we navigate through his films, it becomes evident that Affleck’s evolution as a director mirrors the diversity of his illustrious career in Hollywood.
