Spelling previously opened up about her lazy mom hacks in an episode of her “MisSPELLING” podcast, revealing that she usually prepares Beau for school the night before.

“It’s so bad. I’ve gotten so lazy with my youngest one because there’s so many that at night I put him in his clothes for the next day,” the “Beverly Hills: 90210” alum shared with a laugh, adding, “And convinced him that it’s cool to do that.”

Spelling then proceeded to explain how she “rationalized” the routine for Beau.

“So, he has dinner, he takes his bath — sometimes— but then I’ll be like, ‘Hey, dude. It will save an extra five minutes if we get dressed now and then you can sleep later,'” she recalled of their conversation.

“And I can sleep later wink wink,” Spelling told her actress Debbie Gibson. “So he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ So, he sleeps in his clothes.”

“He was reacting emotionally, and he was still drinking, and, you know, he was in that spiral,” she recalled. “But I gotta say, when I saw that post — inside, I was like, ‘Oh, thank god.'”

“Because… I don’t know if I could have done it. I want to do it. I want it to be strong enough,” she added.

“I looked at [his post] and I’m not kidding you guys, I felt like this giant rock had been lifted off my chest,” she shared, per People Magazine. “I could breathe deeply, and I was like, ‘Oh my God. He said it. He said it, so now I’m free.'”

According to the news outlet, she alleged that he’d threatened divorce “1 million times,” adding that she doesn’t “think I’ve ever threatened that, like, ever.”

“And there were times where I desperately wanted it,” Spelling continued. “But, like, I would never throw that in someone’s face if I didn’t actually mean it.”

“I didn’t have the balls to leave,” she added, recounting her reaction to seeing McDermott’s post. “I couldn’t do it and he did it. [I thought] ‘Now I can move on. He’s put it out there. Let’s go. Yes! I needed this,’ you know? Like, I couldn’t do it myself.”

PropiChain’s Token Presale Records More Inflows as AI and Real Estate Model Attracts Savvy Investors

PropiChain’s Token Presale Records More Inflows as AI and Real Estate Model Attracts Savvy Investors

PropiChain’s Token Presale Records More Inflows as AI and Real Estate Model Attracts Savvy Investors

The real estate industry, long plagued by inefficiencies and high entry barriers, is undergoing a major transformation through blockchain and artificial intelligence. PropiChain (PCHAIN) token presale is at the forefront of this revolution, leveraging AI-powered real estate investments and tokenized property ownership.

This token presale has been gaining significant momentum as investors recognize its potential to disrupt the property management sector.

PropiChain (PCHAIN) Creates an AI-Powered Real Estate Investment

PropiChain’s AI-driven approach is redefining how real estate transactions are conducted. Unlike traditional property investments that require extensive paperwork and intermediaries, PropiChain uses AI to streamline processes, enhance accuracy, and boost market efficiency.

The platform’s AI engine analyzes global real estate trends, assesses property values, and automates transactions, reducing the risks of human error and speculative investments. This unique system allows investors to make data-backed decisions, ensuring they capitalize on market trends before they materialize.

PropiChain’s predictive analytics also provide investors with real-time insights, using historical data and economic indicators to forecast movements. These advanced AI capabilities are continuously improved through funds raised in the ongoing token presale, ensuring the platform remains a leader in real estate intelligence.

Another compelling aspect of PropiChain’s model is its use of smart contracts, which automate property transactions based on predefined investor conditions. Whether it’s setting price triggers or rental agreements, smart contracts execute transactions efficiently without third-party involvement.

Beyond simplifying transactions, PropiChain integrates with the metaverse through its ‘Propiverse’, allowing users to explore properties virtually. Investors can tour real estate assets, assess layouts, and interact with other buyers and sellers in a digital, immersive environment.

This AI-enhanced virtual real estate experience further strengthens PropiChain’s position as a next-generation investment platform.

PropiChain’s token presale surge is largely fueled by its fractional ownership model, which makes real estate investments accessible to a broader audience. Traditionally, real estate investments require significant capital, but PropiChain removes these barriers by allowing investors to purchase fractional ownership of properties.

Through blockchain-based property tokenization, physical assets are transformed into digital securities that can be easily traded. Investors benefit from increased liquidity, bypassing the illiquidity issues of traditional real estate investments.

PropiChain also ensures transparency and security in property transactions. The platform has undergone rigorous smart contract audits by BlockAudit, a leading blockchain security firm. This has shunned the idea of the project being illegitimate, boosting its credibility among investors.

Additionally, its listing on CoinMarketCap reinforces investor confidence and signals the project’s long-term viability. Since the listing, bullish sentiments have grown significantly, now standing at 89%.

PropiChain’s Token Presale Sees Massive Inflows

With increasing investor interest, PropiChain’s token presale has now raised over $3 million. Currently in its second token presale stage, the altcoin is priced at $0.011, which is expected to increase in the next phase to $0.023.

Investors who get in early stand to gain significantly, with the listing price set at $0.032, offering a potential ROI of over 700%.

Market analysts predict that PCHAIN could see a price surge beyond $4, mirroring previous exponential gains from tokens like Dogecoin. This projection suggests a staggering 10,500% return for early investors, earning an investment of $600 an ROI of up to $63,000.

At the heart of PropiChain’s ecosystem, the PCHAIN token powers all transactions. It facilitates property purchases, access to AI analytics, smart contract automation, and engagement in the metaverse real estate marketplace.

Additionally, token holders can participate in governance decisions, stake their assets for rewards up to 225%, and benefit from DeFi integrations.

As PropiChain continues to attract savvy investors, its AI-driven real estate model, and tokenized ownership structure position it as a game-changer in the market. With its token presale surging, this is shaping to be one of the most promising blockchain projects in the real estate sector.

The Godzilla Minus One Sequel Has One Big Advantage Over The First Movie – SlashFilm

The Godzilla Minus One Sequel Has One Big Advantage Over The First Movie – SlashFilm

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Details have been slim, but Toho confirmed in November 2024 that Takashi Yamazaki is indeed working on a follow-up to his unexpected Oscar-winning smash hit “Godzilla Minus One.” The film was one of the biggest surprises of recent memory, both critically and commercially, almost instantly cementing itself as one of the best “Godzilla” movies ever. While we still don’t have much to go on by way of specifics, we now have an encouraging update on the status of the sequel.

Per Variety, Yamazaki was on hand at the Visual Effects Society Awards recently, where he was honored with the Visionary Award. During the event, the filmmaker confirmed he’s actively working on the script and storyboards for his next “Godzilla” movie, which means the film is firmly in pre-production. What’s more, Yamazaki also revealed he will have “more” budget this time around. While an exact figure wasn’t provided, that is almost certainly good news for both him and fans of the “Godzilla” franchise at large.

Rather remarkably, Yamazaki managed to make “Minus One” for less than $15 million. Granted, the movie was produced in Japan and, because of a lack of labor unions like the ones that exist in Hollywood, costs over there don’t balloon. That said, the film was a huge smash, taking in just a smidge under $114 million worldwide at the box office to go with near-universal acclaim. It also became the first and only “Godzilla” movie in history to win an Oscar, taking home the prize for Best Visual Effects.

All of this to say, Yamazaki has earned a bigger budget. As for the story he’s cooking up? That remains a mystery. “Godzilla Minus One” itself took place in Japan in the immediate aftermath of World War II, at which point the country, still ravaged by the war, is then forced to face the terror of Godzilla. With the devastated people of Japan already struggling to survive (and their government doing far too little to help), they must find a way to rally together and battle the destructive beast on their own.

Godzilla Minus One’s director was already able to do a lot with a little

For the moment, it’s unclear if Yamazaki is going to do a direct sequel to “Minus One,” although the strange markings on Noriko (Minami Hamabe) at the end of that movie suggest there could be a path forward with the film’s characters. It’s also entirely possible that Yamazaki will decide to simply craft a whole new story. Either way, we’ve already seen what the filmmaker was able to accomplish with pretty limited resources, and it was downright remarkable. Imagining what he could do with more money (and, presumably, creative freedom) is thrilling, speaking for myself.

While Toho has yet to give this new film a release date, 2026 doesn’t seem impossible, what with pre-production already firmly underway. We can also take comfort in knowing Yamazaki isn’t ready to embrace AI, even as Hollywood continues to reckon with the technology. Indeed, the filmmaker spoke about the effects of AI on the film industry during the aforementioned event via a translator. In doing so, he explained that he still prefers more old-school techniques (which suggests that this is how he’s going to approach his next “Godzilla” film):

“Until recently, I’ve been still shooting on film and I like to use miniatures. So, I know that someday we’re going to have to embrace and kind of work with AI, but I’m probably going to be one of the later ones because I do like working with older technology and techniques.”

Rather definitively, we can say that it’s truly a great time to be a fan of the King of the Monsters. In addition to this movie, we’ve got the upcoming “Godzilla x Kong” sequel from the MonsterVerse on the way, which will be directed by Grant Sputore (“I Am Mother”). Not only that, but Apple TV+ is also currently working on “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” Season 2, with some possible spin-offs in development as well. Couple all that with everything IDW has going on in the comics and “Godzilla” has arguably never been bigger. Not bad for a 70-year-old monster.

You can grab “Godzilla Minus One” on 4K, Blu-ray, or DVD from Amazon.

The Apprentice candidate quits the show leaving Lord Sugar stunned: ‘It’s not for me’

An upcoming episode of The Apprentice sees the dramatic moment when one of the candidates quits the show, leaving Lord Alan Sugar stunned.

Reports claim tension shot through the roof in the boardroom when the billionaire businessman took to eliminating those who didn’t make the cut.

However, to evade Alan’s firing, one of the stars chose to walk out of the show of their own accord.

        The Apprentice star quits show

The Daily Mail claimed that one of the candidates stormed out of the boardroom following an intense task.

This week’s challenge sees the contestants to travel to Stratford-upon-Avon to flex their business skills. They’re tasked with sourcing nine items locally for the lowest price possible.

However, the paper claims that cracks beginning to show during the challenge for one contestant. It’s not clear if they make their early exit tonight (February 13).

A source claimed: “The Apprentice isn’t for everyone and some of the candidates only realise that once they’re in the process. One contestant in this series decided to leave the competition early, telling Lord Sugar: ‘This isn’t for me.’”

The sudden exit of the contestant came as a “total shock” in the boardroom. The eliminated candidate apparently “wanted to avoid the potential embarrassment of being fired”.

This also means they will lose out on the £250,000 investment and an opportunity to be mentored by Alan.

‘They saved Lord Sugar the trouble’

The source claimed that The Apprentice star “saved Lord Sugar the trouble” by giving up the opportunity to become his next business partner.

Commenting on the shocking exit, they said: “Ultimately, they realised that the show wasn’t the right process for them and their fellow candidates wanted it more. Staying in the process wouldn’t have been fair to their competitors as far as they were concerned.”

The unnamed candidate is said to have a very successful business, which they wanted to get back to.

The shocking twist comes after the elimination of corporate manager Emma Street. When she was eliminated first, viewers branded it a “wrong choice” by business mogul Alan.

Venom Superpowers Yet to Grace the Silver Marvel Movie Screen | MarkMeets Media

          0
Venom Superpowers Yet to Grace the Silver Marvel Movie Screen | MarkMeets Media

Venom, the symbiotic anti-hero, has swung into the Marvel movie scene, leaving audiences captivated with his unique blend of lethality and complexity. Despite the cinematic forays into his symbiote biology, there’s a treasure trove of superpowers from the comics waiting to be explored. Let’s delve into the top ten Venom superpowers that are still awaiting their moment in the Marvel movie spotlight.

Not Needing To Breathe: Beyond Bullets and Punches

Venom’s resilience isn’t limited to bullets and punches; it extends to surviving in extreme environments without the need to breathe. Rooted in the symbiote’s extraterrestrial origins, Eddie Brock, when bonded with Venom, defies the need for air. This unique adaptation, drawn from the comics, showcases Venom’s versatility beyond physical confrontations, offering a glimpse into his remarkable symbiotic biology.

Stopping His Own Heart: Playing Possum with a Symbiotic Twist

In moments of peril, Venom unveils a trump card straight from the comics—playing possum. The symbiote’s ability to halt Eddie’s heart briefly adds a layer of cunning to Venom’s repertoire. This unexpected tactic allows him to convincingly feign death, outwitting even the most perceptive heroes and villains. It’s a niche yet potent ability that adds a strategic dimension to Venom’s arsenal.

Prehensile Tongue: More Than Just a Menacing Display

Venom’s iconic tongue, a visual staple in the movies, holds more than just an intimidating presence. True to the comics, Venom’s tongue is a versatile appendage, rivalling even the notorious X-Men villain Toad. Beyond its menacing appearance, Venom’s tongue is as flexible and robust as his tentacles, showcasing a multifaceted set of abilities that adds depth to his character.

          Shape-Shifting Disguises: Master of Camouflage

The movies have explored Venom’s shape-shifting prowess, but the comics take it a step further. Venom, in his comic iterations, can seamlessly change color and texture, allowing Eddie to effortlessly disguise himself. This extends beyond altering shapes, encompassing a range of appearances—different skin tones, faces, and clothes. Venom’s versatility as a master of disguise opens up narrative possibilities yet to be explored on the big screen.

          Invisibility: Blending into the Shadows

A trump card in Venom’s stealth arsenal is his capacity for invisibility. In the comics, his color-changing skin grants him the ability to blend seamlessly into his surroundings. Mimicking the world around him, Venom achieves a form of invisibility. While not flawless, this power offers a strategic advantage, allowing Venom to gain the upper hand by catching opponents off guard.

Vacuum-Sealing Webbing: Taking Webslinging to the Next Level

Venom’s webs, a nod to Spider-Man’s powers, surpass expectations in the comics. He can manipulate his webbing with greater precision than Peter Parker. A unique ability showcased in the comics involves vacuum-sealing enemies within his webs by extracting all the air between the membranes. This adds a layer of creativity and menace to Venom’s web-slinging capabilities, elevating his control over the sticky substance.

Traveling Through Phone Lines: Oozing Through Technological Frontiers

The comics push the boundaries of Venom’s liquid form, allowing him to travel through almost any obstacle, even phone lines. This surreal concept involves the symbiote transforming into a molecular monofilament, transmitting itself akin to a telephone call. While the practicality of this power in live-action remains dubious, its imaginative flair highlights the comics’ willingness to explore unconventional possibilities.

Digital Projection: A Fantasy Dive into Technological Marvels

Venturing into fantastical realms, Venom’s comic iteration introduces the concept of digital projection. By entering the system on a molecular level, Venom manifests a digital avatar of himself. This power, a product of 90s comics’ interpretation of the early internet, adds a touch of fantasy to Venom’s repertoire. While unlikely for gritty film adaptations, it stands out as a quirky aspect of his comic abilities.

          Technopathy: Weaving into the Machinery

The symbiote’s interaction with machinery goes beyond mere transportation in the comics. Venom, stretching his tentacles into thin threads, integrates with machines. This grants him a limited form of technopathy, enabling mental control of machines within close range. Interestingly, this power also surfaces as a signature technique of Carnage, hinting at the symbiotes’ diverse capabilities within the Marvel Universe.

Forcing His Host To Sleep: The Disturbing Hold Over Circadian Rhythms

Eddie Brock’s tumultuous relationship with Venom takes a darker turn in the comics. Venom, capable of exerting influence on Eddie’s circadian rhythm, can induce sleep. This unsettling power adds a layer of psychological complexity to their dynamic, raising questions about Eddie’s autonomy and control. The potential ramifications of this ability extend beyond Eddie himself, introducing intriguing possibilities for exploration.

Conclusion: Uncharted Realms of Venom’s Potential

Improving Language Model Performance: DeepSeek-R1 and the Power of Rei

Improving Language Model Performance: DeepSeek-R1 and the Power of Rei

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made rapid progress in recent years, with large language models (LLMs) leading the way toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). OpenAI’s o1 has introduced advanced inference-time scaling techniques, significantly improving reasoning capabilities. However, its closed-source nature limits accessibility.

A new breakthrough in AI research comes from DeepSeek, which has unveiled DeepSeek-R1, an open-source model designed to enhance reasoning capabilities through large-scale reinforcement learning. The research paper, “DeepSeek-R1: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability in Large Language Models via Reinforcement Learning,” offers an in-depth roadmap for training LLMs using reinforcement learning techniques. This article explores the key aspects of DeepSeek-R1, its innovative training methodology, and its potential impact on AI-driven reasoning.

          Revisiting LLM Training Fundamentals

Before diving into the specifics of DeepSeek-R1, it’s essential to understand the fundamental training process of LLMs. The development of these models generally follows three critical stages:

          1. Pre-training

The foundation of any LLM is built during the pre-training phase. At this stage, the model is exposed to massive amounts of text and code, allowing it to learn general-purpose knowledge. The primary objective here is to predict the next token in a sequence. For instance, given the prompt “write a bedtime _,” the model might complete it with “story.” However, despite acquiring extensive knowledge, the model remains ineffective at following human instructions without further refinement.

          2. Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT)

In this phase, the model is fine-tuned using a curated dataset containing instruction-response pairs. These pairs help the model understand how to generate more human-aligned responses. After supervised fine-tuning, the model improves at following instructions and engaging in meaningful conversations.

          3. Reinforcement Learning

The final stage involves refining the model’s responses using reinforcement learning. Traditionally, this is done through Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), where human evaluators rate responses to train the model. However, obtaining large-scale, high-quality human feedback is challenging. An alternative approach, Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback (RLAIF), utilizes a highly capable AI model to provide feedback instead. This reduces reliance on human labor while still ensuring quality improvements.

          DeepSeek-R1-Zero: A Novel Approach to RL-Driven Reasoning

One of the most striking aspects of DeepSeek-R1 is its departure from the conventional supervised fine-tuning phase. Instead of following the standard process, DeepSeek introduced DeepSeek-R1-Zero, which is trained entirely through reinforcement learning. This innovative model is built upon DeepSeek-V3-Base, a pre-trained model with 671 billion parameters.

By omitting supervised fine-tuning, DeepSeek-R1-Zero achieves state-of-the-art reasoning capabilities using an alternative reinforcement learning strategy. Unlike traditional RLHF or RLAIF, DeepSeek employs Rule-Based Reinforcement Learning, a cost-effective and scalable method.

The Power of Rule-Based Reinforcement Learning

DeepSeek-R1-Zero relies on an in-house reinforcement learning approach called Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). This technique enhances the model’s reasoning capabilities by rewarding outputs based on predefined rules instead of relying on human feedback. The process unfolds as follows:

Generating Multiple Outputs: The model is given an input problem and generates multiple possible outputs, each containing a reasoning process and an answer.

Evaluating Outputs with Rule-Based Rewards: Instead of relying on AI-generated or human feedback, predefined rules assess the accuracy and format of each output.

Training the Model for Optimal Performance: The GRPO method trains the model to favor the best outputs, improving its reasoning abilities.

          Key Rule-Based Rewards

Accuracy Reward: If a problem has a deterministic correct answer, the model receives a reward for arriving at the correct conclusion. For coding-related tasks, predefined test cases validate the output.

Format Reward: The model is instructed to format its responses correctly. For example, it must structure its reasoning process within tags and present its final answer within tags.

By leveraging these rule-based rewards, DeepSeek-R1-Zero eliminates the need for a neural-based reward model, reducing computational costs and minimizing risks like reward hacking—where a model exploits loopholes to maximize rewards without actually improving its reasoning.

          DeepSeek-R1-Zero’s Performance and Benchmarking

The effectiveness of DeepSeek-R1-Zero is evident in its performance benchmarks. When compared to OpenAI’s o1 model, it demonstrates comparable or superior reasoning abilities across various reasoning-intensive tasks.

In particular, results from the AIME dataset showcase an impressive improvement in the model’s performance. The pass@1 score—which measures the accuracy of the model’s first attempt at solving a problem—skyrocketed from 15.6% to 71.0% during training, reaching levels on par with OpenAI’s closed-source model.

          Self-Evolution: The AI’s ‘Aha Moment’

One of the most fascinating aspects of DeepSeek-R1-Zero’s training process is its self-evolution. Over time, the model naturally learns to allocate more time to complex reasoning tasks. This means that as training progresses, the model increasingly refines its thought process, much like a human would when tackling a challenging problem.

A particularly intriguing phenomenon observed during training is the “Aha Moment.” This refers to instances where the model reevaluates its reasoning mid-process. For example, when solving a math problem, DeepSeek-R1-Zero may initially take an incorrect approach but later recognize its mistake and self-correct. This capability emerges organically during reinforcement learning, demonstrating the model’s ability to refine its reasoning autonomously.

          Why Develop DeepSeek-R1?

Despite the groundbreaking performance of DeepSeek-R1-Zero, it exhibited certain limitations:

Readability Issues: The outputs were often difficult to interpret.

Inconsistent Language Usage: The model frequently mixed multiple languages within a single response, making interactions less coherent.

To address these concerns, DeepSeek introduced DeepSeek-R1, an improved version of the model trained through a four-phase pipeline.

          The Training Process of DeepSeek-R1

DeepSeek-R1 refines the reasoning abilities of DeepSeek-R1-Zero while improving readability and consistency. The training follows a structured four-phase process:

          1. Cold Start (Phase 1)

The model starts with DeepSeek-V3-Base and undergoes supervised fine-tuning using a high-quality dataset curated from DeepSeek-R1-Zero’s best outputs. This step improves readability while maintaining strong reasoning abilities.

          2. Reasoning Reinforcement Learning (Phase 2)

Similar to DeepSeek-R1-Zero, this phase applies large-scale reinforcement learning using rule-based rewards. This enhances the model’s reasoning in areas like coding, mathematics, science, and logic.

          3. Rejection Sampling & Supervised Fine-Tuning (Phase 3)

In this phase, the model generates numerous responses, and only accurate and readable outputs are retained using rejection sampling. A secondary model, DeepSeek-V3, helps select the best samples. These responses are then used for additional supervised fine-tuning to further refine the model’s capabilities.

          4. Diverse Reinforcement Learning (Phase 4)

The final phase involves reinforcement learning across a wide range of tasks. For math and coding-related challenges, rule-based rewards are used, while for more subjective tasks, AI feedback ensures alignment with human preferences.

          DeepSeek-R1: A Worthy Competitor to OpenAI’s o1

The final version of DeepSeek-R1 delivers remarkable results, outperforming OpenAI’s o1 in several benchmarks. Notably, a distilled 32-billion-parameter version of the model also exhibits exceptional reasoning capabilities, making it a smaller yet highly efficient alternative.

          Final Thoughts

DeepSeek-R1 marks a significant step forward in AI reasoning capabilities. By leveraging rule-based reinforcement learning, DeepSeek has demonstrated that supervised fine-tuning is not always necessary for training powerful LLMs. Moreover, the introduction of DeepSeek-R1 addresses key readability and consistency challenges while maintaining state-of-the-art reasoning performance.

As the AI research community moves toward open-source models with advanced reasoning capabilities, DeepSeek-R1 stands out as a compelling alternative to proprietary models like OpenAI’s o1. Its release paves the way for further reinforcement learning and large-scale AI training innovation.

It’s happened: Helldivers 2 players just witnessed the great pac-manning of an entire planet by Meridia’s black hole, and Arrowhead’s declared a period of super mourning

Oh no. Helldivers 2’s Meridia black hole has officially destroyed the planet it’s been lurching towards for the past little bit – Angel’s Venture, the ball in question, has met an explodey demise. Naturally, Arrowhead’s declared a period of mourning for the lost citizens.

It’d been looking certain that Angel’s Venture was doomed, with evacuation orders having been given, and as the latest major order ended that big purple black hole that’s recently begun moving on a trajectory towards Super Earth wiped it off the map in spectacular fashion.

          Manage cookie settings

“Angel’s Venture has been torn apart by the Meridian Singularity,” Arrowhead wrote in a tweet featuring a news broadcast letting everyone who wasn’t there to witness it firsthand know this had come to pass.

“Finally the Illuminate, hiding behind their mask of intelligence and sophistication, have revealed what they truly want: carnage,” it added, “The President of Super Earth has announced a Galaxy-wide mourning period of 24 hours.”

A sad day to be a helldiver then, even if you did get to see something visually cool. It was terrible, of course, a true tragedy. As has been acknowledged by a Reddit user dubbed ‘DickBallsley’, whom some players had trusted to save Angel’s venture singlehandedly after they declared “Y’all acting as if I would let that happen” in a thread the other day.

They’ve now held their hands up in fresh post, writing: “I’m sorry everyone, I might have overdone it.” “Going all out was not the best idea,” they added, “Next time I’ll read what it says on the packet, this one’s on me.”

Natually, their fellow divers have whipped out the Obi-Wan Kenobi ‘You were the chosen one’ GIF.

As everyone mourns, the battle’s only just beginning. The Meridian Singularity is now on a direct path to Super Earth, with several more planets in the way that it could pac-man up. Odds are the next MO will be all about trying to slow it down by fending off yet more Illuminate attacks – we’d best hope the second crack at this is more effective than this first one has been

          Avowed Launches to Strong Reviews

          Avowed Launches to Strong Reviews

Obsidian Entertainment’s newest and shiniest RPG Avowed becomes playable today for anybody who opted for the early access, while everyone else has to wait until the 18th of this month. But is it worth paying extra to play? Well, the reviews seem to indicate that it might be.

The review embargo has been lifted, and based on over 90 critic reviews the game is currently holding a fairly impressive score of 81 on Opencritic. That would put it at roughly the 9th highest reviewed game of the year so far, with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 currently reigning supreme at the top of the list with a score of 89.

Robert Purchese handled the review for Eurogamer, awarding Avowed a score of 4 out of 5. He talks of a game that shows a surprisingly tight budget in places, can be clunky and sometimes feels like an Xbox 360 title. And yet, it obviously manages to overcome some of those issues: “This isn’t the triple-A Microsoft-funded showcase I once believed it would be. It’s closer in spirit, perhaps, to the double-A games that had their heyday in the 360 era, which I promise you isn’t meant to disparage. Rather, it’s to invoke the spirit of that age and how many of those games overcame their limitations to become classics, with a clarity of vision and a sense of fun that resonated with audiences. Avowed has been more generous than I thought it would be – in length, in heart, in depth – and it never loses sight of being a game, of being an adventure, of taking you places you would never normally go, or of simply providing a few dozen hours of unabashed escapism. I think it’s one of this year’s most pleasant surprises.”

Travis Northhup was in charge of the IGN review, giving the game a 7 out of 10. amusingly, he describes the game as having abundance of bears, “Even when it really doesn’t make sense.“That probably explains his bear pun in the closing section of the review where he wrote: “With awesome worldbuilding and stellar character writing, Avowed reminds me why I fell in love with Obsidian’s RPGs in the first place. However, the bigger picture is that it plays it quite safe, with a by-the-numbers fantasy adventure that’s more familiar than evolutionary, and there’s bear-ly any enemy variety to keep its swords-and-sorcery battles interesting for long. “

Over on VGC, it was Chris Scullion on keyboard duty, tapping out a review score of 4 out of 5. He was impressed with the game, and I very pleased when he stated that you can wield a grimoire in one hand and a mace in the other. That means I can cast a magic spell, and then also cast my favourite magic spell known as blunt force trauma. Anyway, here’s how he cosed out his review: “However you decide it’s best to play Avowed, we’d certainly recommend you play it regardless. It may not reinvent The Wheel – trust me, you’ll soon discover that’s a great reference – but very little about it is presented to anything other than a high standard. Whether it takes you 25 hours or 100 hours to reach the credits, as they roll you’ll agree it was time well spent.”

Youtuber ACG was someone else who noted the game’s weird focus on bears. He doesn’t usual the traditional ranking system, instead using his own unique scale. In this case, Avowed got a “Wait for a sale” rating. Here’s what he had to say: “I personally had a great time with this. The actual fun factor of this game was higher than I expected. I did not actually think I was going to enjoy the gameplay and I didn’t think the world was going to be this expansive. Now, at the same time, that’s because really monsters are in a particular place. They’ve made that quite clear for months, where they’ve been saying that a lot of these enemies are not procedurally placed or in any way random, they’re hand placed so it’s an event-driven style game and in that way, those events are pretty goddamn, well, eventful.”

To my surprise, there were no low review scores, with almost all of the critics agreeing that it was in the 7-8 range. But in an effort to balance things out I did browse the reviews to find a lower one. Stacey Henley was the voice of The Gamer for this one, writing a review in which she describes the game as “unfinished on a deeper, and unfortunately far less fixable, level than simply needing a couple of weeks to work out the kinks.”

She did still score Avowed a 3 out of 5, though. She noted a general lack of choice, simple side-quests and that “Every avenue you explore in Avowed feels like a dead end.” In the end, it’s he varied approaches to combat and game’s charm that helps balance out the score. As she writes in her conclusion: “Avowed is a valiant attempt at fantasy you can play your way, but while it delivers well enough with combat, the narrative just isn’t there. Too ambitious in what it wants to do, it falls way short. It’s a very mediocre version of the masterpiece it tries to be, but it’s also a solid version of Just Another Video Game. The story goes nowhere and all ends the same way, but maybe the journey is just about worth it.”

And finally, I’d recommend the excellent Mr. Matty on Youtube. Despite being a self-confessed lover of Obsidian, he was left “bummed out” by Avowed.

If you don’t want to watch the whole video, here’s his summary from the closing minutes: “Unfortunately, Avowed left me pretty bummed out by the end of it all. I was like, ‘yeah, it was alright but that’s not the Obsidian I know.’ “

He goes on to say he’s still very hopeful for The Outer Worlds 2 from Obsidian as that is being handled by a different internal team. And he also states that he’s okay with Avowed just being okay given how much of Obsidian’s past work he has loved. After all, in his words “the drop-off had to happen somewhere.”
