NetEase cuts Marvel Rivals’ Seattle-based devs to “optimize development” in China | TheSixthAxis

NetEase cuts Marvel Rivals’ Seattle-based devs to “optimize development” in China | TheSixthAxis

Despite having a major hit on their hands with Marvel Rivals, NetEase has decided to layoff a part of the team that made it happen as part of a shift away from having US-based workers – per industry analyst Daniel Ahmad. The game’s continued support will revolve around the core development team in China going forward.

Updated: Added details on studio size.

Studio director Matthew Sassler broke the news on his LinkedIn (via Resetera), writing:

This is such a weird industry…

My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games…

…and were just laid off!

He went on to sing the praises of co-worker Garry McGee, who was working “as sort of an “R & D” branch, coming up with new level design mechanics, gameplay mechanics, and so on.”

Level designer Jack Burrows also confirmed that they have been laid off, and it seems that this has affected exclusively a US-based design team, when the initial framing of the news suggested that NetEase was making a more dramatic cut.

It’s not clear how many developers were a part of NetEase’s Seattle team, though there’s some reporting that this was a micro-studio of just six employees – via Second Wind Group’s Nick Calandra. Still, if part of a wider shift, this could affect other NetEase teams in LA and Texas.

In a statement to WCCFTech, NetEase says:

We recently made the difficult decision to adjust Marvel Rivals’ development team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game. This resulted in a reduction of a design team based in Seattle that is part of a larger global design function in support of Marvel Rivals. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of those affected and will be treating them confidentially and respectfully with recognition for their individual contributions.

We want to reassure our fanbase that the core development team for Marvel Rivals, which continues to be led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen in Guangzhou, China, remains fully committed to delivering an exceptional experience. We are investing more, not less, into the evolution and growth of this game. We’re excited to deliver new superhero characters, maps, features, and content to ensure an engaging live service experience for our worldwide player base.

A factor here will almost certainly have been the cost of labour in different parts of the world. Compared to the salaries that US-based developers hold (and particularly those in affluent tech hubs like Seattle), the “core” team in China will be much cheaper by comparison. Of course, this very much comes off as though the US devs have been quickly discarded once all their usefulness has been reached… which is pretty much par for the course in an industry where outsourced labour has become increasingly prevalent. It’s somewhat ironic that it’s the US developers feeling the effects of this, as opposed to those in Asia.

Hopefully all those affected will be able to find fresh work soon, and having a hit like Marvel Rivals on their resume certainly won’t hurt.

SendingNetwork Releases Version 2.0 To Build Decentralized Ecosystem That Supports AI Agents

In Brief

SendingNetwork has released version 2.0, enabling AI agents to collaborate autonomously, negotiate deals without intermediaries, exchange data via encrypted messages, and more.

SendingNetwork Releases Version 2.0 To Build Decentralized Ecosystem That Supports AI Agents

Decentralized communication network SendingNetwork announced the release of its 2.0 version, which is designed to build a decentralized ecosystem that supports AI agents. This new version enables AI agents to collaborate autonomously, negotiate deals without the need for intermediaries, securely exchange data through encrypted messages, and hire specialized skills from a global agent hub, among other features.

SendingNetwork 2.0 introduces a multi-layered ecosystem for AI agents, including the Agent Communication Protocol, which facilitates messaging, transactions, and application programming interface (API) calls across different blockchain networks. It also features the Agent Register Hub, a decentralized marketplace where agents can list their skills, and a Trust Layer that uses decentralized identifiers (DIDs) for identity verification alongside end-to-end encryption to ensure privacy.

As an example of  SendingNetwork 2.0 workflow in action, users can consider a weather-predicting AI agent that authenticates itself by providing a valid wallet signature. The agent then queries a decentralized registry to find a trusted data-storage agent. After negotiating the terms of data exchange, they use the Agent Communication Protocol (ACP) to securely send encrypted messages. P2P nodes are incentivized to relay messages and distribute information globally to AI agent clients. Reputation scores are updated based on the transaction, and zero-knowledge proofs are utilized to ensure the integrity of the process—all achieved without any need for a centralized intermediary.

SendingNetwork 2.0: Key Innovations And Benefits For Community

Among its key innovations and community benefits, the platform features an agent-friendly design, focusing on autonomy and collaboration. This structure allows AI agents to function with minimal central oversight, creating a decentralized intelligence ecosystem that is both flexible and accessible. Furthermore, each component is designed with a plug-and-play approach. Whether upgrading the storage system or integrating a new consensus algorithm, elements can be easily swapped out without disrupting the overall ecosystem.

Additionally, the system is designed with transparency in mind, including logs, kill switches, and strong privacy protections to ensure it operates not only efficiently but also securely and accountably. With DAOs overseeing protocol upgrades and handling dispute resolution, every participant—including node operators, developers, and AI agents—has a role in shaping the network’s development.

With the launch of SendingNetwork 2.0, AI developers now have the opportunity to integrate with its software development kit (SDK). AI teams can list their skills in the Register Hub and generate revenue by earning fees. Node operators are rewarded with tokens for relaying agent traffic, while the broader community has the ability to participate in governance through decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) votes.

SendingNetwork is the central real-time communication (RTC) protocol developed by Sending Labs, a product studio focused on creating decentralized internet and encrypted RTC infrastructure for Web3 projects. The protocol is commonly used for communication across a variety of applications, supporting games, wallets, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), decentralized apps (dApps), and communities.

It enhances chat, trading, and payment functionalities while ensuring users retain control over their data. This layer is highly flexible, supporting protocols such as VPN, DNS, HTTP, and more. We also optimize secure communication protocols like SSL/TLS with on-chain verification, working towards replacing traditional IP addressing with a decentralized, wallet-based approach.

PlayStation 5 had record-breaking sales during holiday season – WholesGame

PlayStation 5 had record-breaking sales during holiday season – WholesGame

Sony’s latest financial report for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2024, highlights significant growth across its gaming division, driven largely by the PlayStation 5’s exceptional performance during the holiday season. With soaring hardware shipments, record-breaking engagement, and a steady rise in digital content sales, Sony has revised its PlayStation sales forecasts upwards, projecting continued momentum in the gaming sector.

Unprecedented Performance for PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 experienced its most successful quarter yet, shipping an impressive 9.5 million units during the holiday period (Q3). This figure includes the PlayStation 5 Pro, which debuted in November 2024. The quarter’s success brought the total PS5 shipments for the nine-month period to 15.7 million units, while cumulative sales for the full 2024 calendar year reached 20.2 million units. Sony noted that these figures align closely with the trajectory of the PlayStation 4’s sales in the same timeframe following its launch, underscoring the PS5’s enduring appeal and demand.

Beyond hardware sales, PlayStation saw an all-time high in user engagement. By the close of Q3, the platform had reached 129 million monthly active users (MAUs), marking a notable increase from the 123 million recorded at the end of 2023. This surge in active users was further complemented by a 2% year-over-year (YoY) increase in total playtime, marking the seventh consecutive year of YoY growth in this metric.

Notably, over 40% of those who purchased a PlayStation 5 during the holiday season were first-time buyers of the console, a factor that played a substantial role in the platform’s growing user base.

Game Sales and Software Successes

The quarter also saw strong performance in software sales, with a total of 95.9 million full games sold. While this figure exceeded the 89.7 million games sold in the same period the previous year, first-party software sales saw a slight decline, dropping from 16.2 million to 11.6 million units.

Two of Sony’s key first-party releases, Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, performed notably well. Astro Bot, which launched in September 2024, sold 1.5 million copies within 58 days, while Helldivers 2, released in August, achieved a remarkable 12 million sales across PlayStation and PC in just 87 days. Sony emphasized that the success of these titles, particularly within family-friendly and live-service genres, reflects a strategic push to diversify and broaden its game portfolio. The company views these achievements as a step toward strengthening its lineup in expanding genres.

Looking ahead, Sony expects its upcoming releases, Ghost of Yōtei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, to drive further revenue growth in the next fiscal year.

Financial Breakdown and Revenue Growth

Sony’s gaming division saw a 16% YoY increase in revenue during the holiday quarter, reaching ¥1.7 trillion ($11 billion). Digital game and add-on content sales also experienced robust growth, rising 13.6% YoY to ¥718.2 billion ($4.6 billion), reflecting a growing trend toward digital purchases. Meanwhile, hardware sales saw nearly a 10% increase, reaching ¥724.7 billion ($4.7 billion).

Network services revenue also saw substantial gains, increasing by 29% YoY to ¥176.9 billion ($1.1 billion). PlayStation Plus played a major role in this growth, with subscription sales climbing 20%, largely due to a combination of higher-tier upgrades and the impact of recent price adjustments.

Increased Forecasts for the Fiscal Year

Given the strong performance of its gaming segment, Sony has raised its revenue expectations for the full fiscal year. The company now anticipates ¥4.6 trillion ($29.9 billion) in sales for its Games & Network Services segment—an increase from its previous forecast of ¥4.5 trillion ($29.2 billion) and a 9.5% improvement compared to the ¥4.2 trillion ($27.3 billion) recorded in the prior fiscal year.

With PlayStation 5 sales continuing to climb, user engagement at record highs, and digital and network revenues expanding rapidly, Sony is poised for sustained growth in its gaming business. The company’s strategic focus on strengthening its software catalog and digital services suggests a continued trajectory of success in the years to come.

Exploring the Top 10 Jack Reacher Books: Unveiling the Best of Lee Child’s Series | MarkMeets Media

Exploring the Top 10 Jack Reacher Books: Unveiling the Best of Lee Child’s Series | MarkMeets Media

When it comes to the world of literary adaptations, the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child has experienced its share of ups and downs. Tom Cruise’s take on the formidable character faced criticism, leading to a lukewarm reception for the movie adaptations. However, the tide turned with Prime Video’s Reacher series, starring Alan Ritchson, which not only garnered acclaim but also secured a swift renewal for a third season.

With 27 books in Lee Child’s ongoing series, the adventures of Jack Reacher, a military investigator turned noble drifter, have captured the imaginations of readers around the globe. As we navigate the expansive realm of Reacher’s world, it’s essential to explore the top 10 Jack Reacher books, each distinguished by compelling plots, character development, and moral dilemmas.

    The Reacher Series Evolution

Before diving into the literary landscape, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the evolution of the Jack Reacher series in the cinematic realm. Tom Cruise’s portrayal, though criticized for not aligning with the physical description of Reacher from the books, delivered a solid action-thriller in the 2012 adaptation of “One Shot.” However, audience indifference and critical drubbing plagued the 2016 sequel, “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back,” effectively putting a halt to Cruise’s Reacher franchise.

The mantle was then passed to Alan Ritchson for the Prime Video adaptation. The success of the Reacher series on the streaming platform was undeniable, securing a third-season renewal even before the premiere of its second season. The decision to adapt different books for each season adds a dynamic touch, keeping fans intrigued. Season 1 followed “The Killing Floor,” while Season 2 delved into the events of the eleventh book, “Bad Luck and Trouble.” Notably, Season 3 is set to explore Book 7, “Persuader.”

Whether you’re a seasoned reader of the Jack Reacher books or a newcomer drawn in by the Prime Video series, let’s embark on a journey through the top 10 books that define this iconic series.

    1. Killing Floor

The journey begins at the very roots of the Reacher series with “Killing Floor,” Lee Child’s debut masterpiece. As Reacher finds himself in Margrave, Georgia, he becomes entangled in a web of small-town conspiracies. This first-person narrative introduces readers to a Reacher who is bitter, cold-hearted, and fueled by a sense of justice. Child’s compelling writing and a morally gray universe set the stage for an unforgettable debut.

    2. One Shot

Cementing its place as one of Child’s most engaging plots, “One Shot” provided the foundation for the 2012 Jack Reacher movie. The storyline unfolds as a shooter seemingly kills five random people with six shots, leading Reacher to a former Army sniper named James Barr. The sinister Russian mob boss, known as the Zec, adds a Bond-villain touch, making “One Shot” a standout in the Reacher series.

    3. Worth Dying For

In “Worth Dying For,” Child channels the essence of classic American Westerns as Reacher, the capable stranger, walks into a town rife with trouble. Confronting the odious Duncan clan, Reacher showcases classic heroism in a tale enriched with rich prose and sharply drawn characters. This installment offers a thrilling read that keeps Reacher in a superior position against the antagonistic forces.

    4. Gone Tomorrow

“Gone Tomorrow” kicks off with one of Child’s most ingenious setups, as Reacher suspects a fellow passenger on a New York City subway might be a suicide bomber. The narrative dives into a morally gray post-9/11 world, and Reacher’s calm fury drives him to unravel layers of lies and betrayal. The ambiguous ending reflects the complexity of the world around him, showcasing Child’s mastery in crafting intricate plots.

    5. 61 Hours

The fourteenth book in the series, “61 Hours,” disrupts the established formula by placing Reacher in a snowbound small town in South Dakota. Outside his usual hyper-competent comfort zone, Reacher makes mistakes, faces challenges, and needs help. The introduction of Major Susan Turner and the exploration of a conspiracy within the police department add layers to this installment, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

    6. Without Fail

“Without Fail” intricately weaves a standout thriller plot with deeply affecting personal stakes for Reacher. The former Secret Service agent brother’s colleague, M.E. Froelich, seeks Reacher’s help in planning to assassinate the Vice President. The blend of an interesting storyline and personal growth for Reacher, coupled with a hint of romance, elevates “Without Fail” among the top books in the series.

    7. The Enemy

As a prequel in the first-person narrative, “The Enemy” offers a unique perspective on Reacher’s character. Delving into his military investigator days, the book unfolds a scandalous death of a major general, revealing a broader scheme to hinder the modernization of the American military. This contrast with the majority of the series, where Reacher is a drifter seeking anonymity, adds depth to the character.

    8. Make Me

“Make Me” follows Reacher as he stumbles upon the small Midwestern town of Mother’s Rest, setting the stage for another small-town conspiracy. Notable for its continued development of Reacher’s character, the book introduces Michelle Chang, a private detective with whom Reacher forms a strong bond. While the overall plot might not be as compelling as some others, “Make Me” offers significant growth for Reacher, hinting at his openness to change.

    9. Die Trying

In “Die Trying,” Reacher’s act of goodwill towards a total stranger spirals into a national-scale dilemma. Lee Child ventures beyond the usual localized crimes and conspiracies, presenting a plot involving the daughter of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the President of the United States. Reacher’s unrequited romantic interest adds depth to the character, making “Die Trying” a memorable installment.

    10. Tripwire

“Tripwire” secures its spot in the top 10 with an intricately woven plot that finds Reacher in Florida, juggling jobs as a pool digger and a bouncer. The discovery of a deadly black-market moneylender and the quest to find a supposedly deceased helicopter pilot lead Reacher into a web of intrigue. The vulnerability displayed by Reacher in this installment, breaking away from his usual unyielding persona, adds a layer of humanity to the character.

Conclusion: Navigating the Jack Reacher Universe

In a literary landscape filled with action-mystery heroes, Jack Reacher stands tall as a unique and captivating character. Lee Child’s ability to craft intricate plots, coupled with Reacher’s unyielding sense of justice, has kept readers hooked for 27 books and counting. As we celebrate the success of the Prime Video adaptation and eagerly await Season 3, there’s no better time to dive into or revisit the Jack Reacher series, where each book unfolds a new layer of Reacher’s compelling journey.

Whether you’re drawn to the small-town conspiracies, morally complex dilemmas, or Reacher’s unwavering pursuit of justice, the top 10 Jack Reacher books offer a diverse array of narratives that showcase the brilliance of Lee Child’s storytelling. So, grab a copy, settle in, and let the adventures of Jack Reacher transport you into a world where justice is served with unwavering determination. The Reacher series continues to evolve, leaving readers hungry for more tales from this enigmatic and formidable protagonist.

SEC Acknowledges Bitwise’s Spot XRP ETF Filing Adding to a Crowded List – Decrypt

    0
SEC Acknowledges Bitwise’s Spot XRP ETF Filing Adding to a Crowded List – Decrypt

On Tuesday, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission acknowledged the filing for Bitwise’s spot XRP exchange-traded fund submitted by Cboe BZX Exchange, becoming the latest in a string of issuers vying to front run anticipated policy shifts to crypto under the Trump administration.

If approved, Bitwise’s spot XRP ETF would legitimize XRP as a mainstream investment vehicle, offering a regulated option for exposure to the world’s third-largest crypto.

Once published in the Federal Register, the SEC will allow a 21-day comment period on the filing before deciding to approve, deny, or pursue further action, with a final decision expected in up to 240 days.

The acknowledgment follows similar moves by other firms, with the SEC recently acknowledging XRP ETF proposals from Grayscale and 21Shares. Filings from WisdomTree and Canary Capital still remain under review.

The increasing number of crypto ETF filings and the SEC’s responsiveness to these applications suggest regulators are on the cusp of a new phase in the acceptance of digital assets under President Donald Trump’s administration.

The SEC’s decision will depend on public feedback and the filing’s compliance with its investor protection standards.

As of now, XRP remains down 2.9%, trading at $2.53, as per CoinGecko data, despite the increasing optimism surrounding crypto ETFs.

The SEC is also reviewing Bitwise’s plan to manage the trust’s assets and mitigate manipulation risks.

This includes safeguards like sourcing XRP prices from U.S.-compliant trading platforms and implementing a creation and redemption process to help prevent fraud.

Following the successful launch of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, chatter about ETFs for other digital assets, including Litecoin, XRP, and Solana, has skyrocketed.

Bloomberg ETF analysts James Seyffart and Eric Balchunas have given XRP ETFs a 65% chance of approval, a favorable outlook for the product amid rising interest in crypto-based investment vehicles.

However, Katalin Tischhauser, Head of Research at Sygnum Bank, has cautioned that not all tokens are created equal, and not all tokens merit an ETF.

“With much of the crypto market seen as speculative or hype-driven, healthy demand is needed for institutional investors to make an allocation,” Tischhauser told Decrypt.

Tischhauser said if many new ETFs are launched without significant demand, the market could be disappointed, potentially damaging the broader crypto industry.

“Tokens with lower volumes are subject to higher volatility, which could lead to larger losses than institutional investors are used to, she explained. “This could diminish the demand for access to additional crypto assets.”

While there is increased interest in crypto ETFs, launching them is a “double-edged sword” and requires careful consideration, Tischhauser remarked.

Mark Bessette proposed and 6 months later Mina Mack was pregnant. They share a baby daughter named Maria. Mark visits his grown daughter in Florida in preparation for Mina and Maria arriving in the United States. She shares her concerns with her dad over some of Mina’s behaviors when they went to Paris for Maria’s christening. Mark is upset that his daughter feels this way. And reveals that he and Mina have talked about another baby. His daughter is shocked by this and suggests he consider a pre-nuptial agreement.

Returning to this season of 90 Day Fiance are Shekinah Garner and Sarper Guven. Still in Turkey, Sarper prepares for his K-1 visa interview. Shekinah nervously shops while Sarper is in the embassy. When he comes out he looks stern. And she fears he may back out of coming to America. We are left with a cliffhanger as to whether he was approved or not. Next week even more couples join the fray. Till next time!

OpenSea Suspends XP Reward System After User Backlash – Cryptoflies News

OpenSea Suspends XP Reward System After User Backlash – Cryptoflies News

      2

Non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace OpenSea has paused its new XP reward system following criticism from users.

On February 13, OpenSea introduced the beta version of its upgraded platform, OS2, calling it “a fully reimagined product built entirely from the ground up.” The update included a new points system that would determine eligibility for an upcoming airdrop of the platform’s native token, $SEA.

However, many users criticized the system, arguing it could encourage wash trading and was designed primarily to generate fees.

In response, OpenSea CEO Devin Finzer addressed the backlash on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “we’ve heard the feedback on the current XP system, and we’re putting a pause on XP given directly for listing and bidding.”

He added, “I appreciate the feedback. we’ll continue to work closely with those who have helpful ideas. but some of the vitriol I saw on X this weekend appeared to be primarily motivated by extraction / attempts to bring OS down.”

Talks of a “revamped” platform had been circulating since last year, when Finzer stated the team would “reimagine everything” and rebuild OpenSea “from the ground up” to improve security and deliver a more personalized experience.

To support the overhaul, OpenSea restructured its operations in 2023, cutting its workforce by up to 50%. It was the second round of major layoffs after a previous one in 2022.

The platform has faced growing challenges. In May 2024, OpenSea’s trading volume dropped to levels last seen in April 2021, signaling a decline in NFT market activity.

Regulatory pressure has also increased. In August 2024, the SEC issued OpenSea a Wells notice, suggesting that NFTs sold on the platform might be classified as securities.

Legal issues followed. In September 2024, two users filed a class-action lawsuit accusing OpenSea of selling unregistered securities. However, the lawsuit ended when both users withdrew their claims after OpenSea invoked binding arbitration.
