How blockchain will bridge the divide in 2025

The following is a guest post by Marc Boiron, CEO at Polygon Labs.

In a world of fake news, misinformation and declining faith in traditional institutions, blockchain should bridge the divide by bringing something incredibly powerful and utterly unique to the table: trustlessness. Or, at least, it should.

Unfortunately, blockchain has always suffered from its own divisions, which have prevented the decentralization revolution from fulfilling its potential. In 2024, things began to change. We saw incredible technical progress to unite the fractured blockchain ecosystem. This year, we’ll finally see decentralization start to deliver its promises of bridging the divide.

The inevitability of fragmented ecosystems

If crypto, DeFi and web3 had emerged fully-formed and with a unified, interoperable set of standards, you’d be rightly suspicious. A truly decentralized ecosystem – one that’s not monopolized by a single entity – will be fragmented by its very nature.

But decentralization came at an initial cost. New technologies and platforms evolved organically and with little reference to (or interoperability with) each other. That left liquidity and functionality trapped in discrete siloes, putting severe limitations on the capabilities and ambitions of individual chains.

And now for the good news. Some of the brightest minds and most innovative businesses have been working on this problem, and in the last 12 months especially we have made spectacular progress. Together, we are building infrastructure that connects chains, dApps, and communities, and we’re aligning incentives and designing systems that can stand the test of time.

Most importantly, we’re doing this without betraying the underlying principles of decentralization.

A world without trade-offs: towards an aggregated future

Layer-2 (L2) networks were supposed to be the silver bullet that solved blockchain’s interoperability and liquidity deficit, but they created as many problems as they solved. It’s true that L2s have boosted transaction capacity, but they remain siloed – even among rollups claiming to be interoperable.

As Vitalik Buterin recently pointed this out, “Ethereum should feel like one ecosystem, not 34 different blockchains. And that’s a very conservative number; unfortunately, there are more like hundreds of blockchains.

Meanwhile, alternatives like Solana and other alt L1s aim to be so fast and integrated that separate networks won’t be necessary. But here’s the reality: no single chain, no matter how powerful, can handle the full weight of a blockchain-powered Internet. There’s always a ceiling.

We’ve recently seen  major progress towards unification, led by the AggLayer. The AggLayer harnesses zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs to connect chains—L1s, L2s, EVM, SVM and everything else—enabling them to share liquidity, state, and users in a seamless, low-latency, and secure way.

If 2024 was the year of the AggLayer, then 2025 will see them begin to transform the ecosystem, bringing a host of new capabilities and services to a global market. Because rollup clusters can plug into the AggLayer and still interoperate with each other, it creates a system with maximum security, sovereignty, and unity.

It brings crypto, web3, DeFi and more together into a single “ecosystem of equals”, where each chain’s unique capabilities combine to create something far greater than the sum of its parts.

By using zkEVM or zkVM-powered unification layers, developers can build with lower costs and faster speeds, all while staying anchored to Ethereum’s unmatched security and censorship resistance. At the same time, these protocols are breaking down Web3’s “walled gardens,” allowing ecosystems to share liquidity and work together seamlessly.

This interconnectedness doesn’t just help developers—it benefits everyone in Web3. It creates stronger network effects, making the space more fair, inclusive, and accessible. It brings back the feeling of the Internet, one that feels unified virtually anywhere in the world. And as we head into 2025, this momentum is only growing.

But what does a unified experience actually look like?

Case study: How yield-bearing stablecoins will reDeFine USD-pegged tokens

One of the prime examples of community-centric trends that saw explosive growth this year is the rapid emergence of yield-bearing stablecoins, such as AUSD and sUSDe.

Unlike traditional USD-pegged tokens such as USDT or USDC, which are backed by funds invested in low-risk assets, their yield-bearing counterparts share the profits with every holder, so everyone can passively benefit from them — not only the issuer.

By generating yield natively in DeFi as well as through crypto derivatives and traditional finance (TradFi), this new type of stablecoins not only aligns the incentives of all network participants but also benefits from an aggregated approach to blockchain, ensuring seamless interoperability between blockchains.

Once aggregated natively, an asset is available across all blockchains connected to the aggregated network – like the AggLayer. When yield-bearing stablecoins are minted in this manner, they can effectively help further expand and evolve crypto in a fairer and more inclusive manner, incentivizing long-term participation in DeFi and Web3 as a whole. Similarly attractive for professional investors and regular users alike, these assets represent a new dimension of community-first finance, promoting financial inclusion and democratizing access to investment opportunities previously limited to TradFi.

They provide a unique opportunity to earn yield while maintaining exposure to stable assets, making them an attractive option for both seasoned investors and those new to the crypto space. By offering a secure and consistent yield, these stablecoins promote financial inclusion and democratize access to investment opportunities previously limited to traditional finance.

Blockchain’s Bright Future Begins in 2025

Trust in everything from politics to institutions has been steadily eroded for years. Thanks in large part to the digital revolution of the last 30 years, the world is already hopelessly divided. Blockchain offers a compelling alternative future in fields as diverse as finance and digital identity. Until very recently, fragmentation threatened to rob us of these gains

Enabled by the blockchain industry’s paradigm shift toward unification in 2024, these trends are poised to massively accelerate mass adoption by making Web3 financially inclusive and interoperable like never before. Blockchain’s bright future therefore begins anew in 2025, when we’ll see even more innovations that bring historically siloed decentralized ecosystems together as “the Internet of the future.”

Scientists Create Water-Harvesting Technology That Uses Kitchen Scraps and Seashells – Decrypt

Scientists Create Water-Harvesting Technology That Uses Kitchen Scraps and Seashells – Decrypt

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have figured out how to turn everyday throwaways into a technology that pulls clean water straight from the atmosphere.

The team used different organic materials to develop “molecularly functionalized biomass hydrogels” that extract drinkable water from air using only mild heat, producing nearly four gallons daily per kilogram of material—about three times more than typical water-harvesting technologies.

“This opens up an entirely new way to think about sustainable water collection, marking a big step towards practical water harvesting systems for households and small community scale,” said Professor Guihua Yu, who led the research team.

The research is relevant today, considering nearly 4.4 billion people have restricted access to safe drinking water, according to recent studies. That’s nearly 50% of the entire human population.

Extracting water out of air is not really new, but what sets this approach apart is its use of natural materials that would otherwise end up in landfills—making it safer and more environmentally friendly too. The researchers successfully converted cellulose (found in plants), starch (from foods like corn and potatoes), and chitosan (from seashells) into high-performance water harvesters.

“At the end of the day, clean water access should be simple, sustainable, and scalable,” said Weixin Guan, another researcher involved in the study. “This material gives us a way to tap into nature’s most abundant resources and make water from air—anytime, anywhere.”

The technology works through a two-step process. First, researchers attach thermoresponsive groups to make the materials sensitive to temperature changes. Then, they add special molecules called “zwitterionic groups” to boost the biomass’ water absorption capacity.

The result is a hydrogel that works somewhat like the silica gel packets found in a normal dehumidifier, but with dramatically better performance and safer composition, using natural materials instead of synthetics.

During field tests, the system demonstrated to be successful—a single kilogram of material produced up to 14.19 liters of water daily. The team says similar technologies typically generate between 1 and 5 liters per kilogram each day.

Unlike conventional water harvesting systems that often rely on energy-hungry refrigeration to condense atmospheric moisture, these hydrogels need only mild heating to 60°C (140°F) to release their captured water—a temperature achievable with simple solar heating or waste heat from other processes.

This minimal energy requirement makes the technology particularly promising for off-grid communities and emergency situations where power might be unavailable.

Professor Yu’s team has been developing water-generating technologies for years, including systems adapted for extremely dry conditions and injectable water filtration systems. They’re now working on scaling production and designing practical devices for commercialization, including portable water harvesters, self-sustaining irrigation systems, and emergency drinking water devices.

Frogger RX – This Arcade-like version of Frogger for the ZX Spectrum is looking good! (+Demo)

Frogger RX – This Arcade-like version of Frogger for the ZX Spectrum is looking good! (+Demo)

When I was growing up I really loved playing the 1981 Arcade game of Frogger by Konami. It had loads of charm, great gameplay for kids and it really made you feel for the safety of those little green frogs as they hopped their way across a busy road, then across a river of logs and Crocodiles to get to the other side. So when happycodingzx announced via itch io about ‘Frogger RX’, which is basically an Arcade-like version of Frogger for the ZX Spectrum, I just had to mention it here on IRN.

And here’s the latest from the itch io page linked (HERE). “This is a free demo of a pre-release version of Frogger RX for the ZX Spectrum. Features include two full game rounds as well as AY sound and music, and most of the features in the arcade.  Still to include are snakes, crocodile in the home squares and otters, as well as beeper sounds for the 48k version and a few other quality of life adjustments. You may find some bugs with the music playback and a few other bits, feel free to report them. The full game will be available to purchase in due course, but is also free to all those who kindly support me on Patreon(link). My full roster of more than a dozen games are included when you sign up”.

Why Sean Connery’s Cameo In A Daniel Craig James Bond Movie Was Canceled – SlashFilm

Why Sean Connery’s Cameo In A Daniel Craig James Bond Movie Was Canceled – SlashFilm

One of the most endearing aspects of Eon Productions’ 25-film run of James Bond movies was the filmmakers’ refusal to do an official, in-film passing of the torch from one 007 to another. Though six actors portrayed the character over the movies’ 63-year history, there has only been one James Bond in Eon’s universe. It’s not a code name that can be conveyed from generation to generation; it’s just one guy who served his country from “Dr. No” to “No Time to Die.”

Will this change now that Amazon MGM Studios has purchased full creative control of the franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson? We’ll have to queasily wait and see what the masterminds who’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars on “Citadel” — a Russo Brothers action-thriller series that most folk don’t seem to actually like yet has already managed to spawn multiple spinoffs — do with a character who’s every bit as appealing today as he was when he first graced movie theater screens in 1962. He’s theirs to muck about with as they so choose.

In the wake of the 007 handover, some deeply cynical fans voiced very real concerns over the possibility that Amazon might use AI to place past Bonds like Sean Connery and Roger Moore in new adventures. I don’t think there’s much appetite for this amongst fans, so I’m cautiously optimistic this will never come to pass. If, however, the folks at Amazon feel tempted to give this a try, they’d do well to seek out the counsel of director Sam Mendes, who once mercifully passed on the opportunity to bring Connery back into the 007 fold.

Sean Connery had a path to appearing in Skyfall

While chatting with The Huffington Post in 2012, Mendes revealed that, during the development of “Skyfall,” the film’s creative team considered casting Sean Connery as Kincade, the caretaker of the Bond family’s estate (who was ultimately played by Albert Finney, pictured above). According to Mendes:

“There was a definite discussion about [Connery playing Kincade] way, way early on. But I think that’s problematic. Because, to me, it becomes too … it would take you out of the movie. Connery is Bond, and he’s not going to come back as another character. It’s like, he’s been there. So, it was a very brief flirtation with that thought, but it was never going to happen, because I thought it would distract.”

Mendes’ instincts were spot-on. Connery popping up in the third act would’ve stopped the movie dead in its tracks, and it would’ve never recovered. It would’ve been even worse if the movie’s creatives had pursued the rumored approach of turning Skyfall into a retirement home for former James Bonds. Fortunately, Connery had been retired from live-action acting for close to a decade at the time, so he almost certainly would’ve turned the offer down had they attempted to go through with it.

So, let this be a lesson to you, Amazon: leave the past in the past. No one wants to see AI-generated dead movie stars. Frankly, I’m not sure what people want from James Bond four years after “No Time to Die,” which could render the company’s reported $1 billion investment in the franchise a dicey one.

Switch 2 may look conservative, but Nintendo still has space to get wildly creative

Switch 2 may look conservative, but Nintendo still has space to get wildly creative

This story was first published in Switchboard, a newsletter from Polygon that delivers all the latest Switch 2 news, reporting, and rumors directly to your inbox. Sign up here to get it weekly.

In the lead-up to Nintendo’s reveal of the Switch 2 in January, some game writers fretted that the company behind the Game Boy, Wii, and Nintendo DS might be playing it too safe with its next-gen console. All indicators pointed to a more powerful Switch that was, well, just a more powerful Switch.

At Polygon, reporter Ana Diaz wrote ahead of Switch 2’s reveal of her one desire from Nintendo’s next-gen plans: “I hope that at least one thing about the Switch 2 is weird.” Whether a “wonky gimmick to the hardware” or at the very least “an adorable jingle,” Diaz pleaded, “I just want to believe that Nintendo can still make something that is at least a little bit goofy.”

In a similar piece for Kotaku, John Walker praised Nintendo’s “bizarre innovation” and its track record of being “utterly impossible to guess what the company might create next, given the complete surprises of, say, a two-screen clamshell touch-screen portable gaming device, or a gesture-led under-TV console that shines best when the whole family is prancing around together.”

The Verge’s Andrew Webster went so far as to call the Switch 2 “boring.” (He framed that as a positive.)

While the original Switch was a demonstration of Nintendo’s ability to surprise and swerve, the hybrid console was also lacking in some of the personality that made the 3DS, Wii, and even the Wii U appealing. There were no cute Miis, and no earworms to shop to.

But the Switch was weird too, and its successor has ample room in which to get a little funky.

Remembering the ‘bizarre innovation’ of the Switch era

    Photo: James Bareham/Polygon

The Nintendo Switch came on the tail of Nintendo doubling down on creativity. During Wii and DS/3DS era, there were dozens of wild experiments that took advantage of motion control and touchscreens, resulting in inventive oddities like Let’s Tap, a game built around never directly touching a Wii Remote; Elite Beat Agents, a musical cheerleading rhythm game; and WarioWare: DIY, a microgame-making toolkit.

Ahead of the Switch launch, some critics of Nintendo unifying its console and handheld gaming business into a machine that could accomplish both at the same time would put its game designers into a tighter box.

But the original Switch fostered wild swings, too, mostly notably in 2018 with the release of Nintendo Labo, a series of build-it-yourself, cardboard-based peripherals that let players drive, fish, and experience lo-fi virtual reality. Two years later, there was Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, a real-world racing game that let Switch owners turn their console into a controller for an RC car — and terrorize their pets.

Thanks to the detachable Joy-Con controllers, game designers at Nintendo realized you could strap them to your thigh, giving us Ring Fit Adventure, an inventive fitness role-playing game. That idea was later applied to a Wii Sports sequel, albeit less successfully.

On the software front, Nintendo has been exploiting the detachable, motion-controlling Switch Joy-Cons to great (and weird) effect. Even many years into the system’s lifecycle, we got great experiments like Everybody 1-2-Switch, which integrated smartphones to let up to 100 people play that party game, and WarioWare: Move It!, a microgame collection that explored butt-wiggling as a game mechanic.

Nintendo also continued to innovate outside of the Switch’s boundaries during the handheld’s eight years on the market. In the off years, when it wasn’t pumping out Switch variants like the Lite and OLED model, it released interesting hardware: the Super NES Classic Edition retro console, Lego Super Mario sets, and Game & Watch handhelds featuring The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. Sure, those were less “weird” than they were shrewd business decisions, but those non-Switch hardware releases helped Nintendo’s Switch-era output be anything but stale.

Where Switch 2 can get weird

The black and pink Switch 2 Joy-Con sliding along a glossy surface like a mouse

    Image: Nintendo

We’ve already seen one potential gameplay-changer from Switch 2: the Joy-Cons’ new mouse mode. Nintendo has a brief history with mouse controls dating back to the Super NES with Mario Paint, but I expect the company to go further with its new control scheme. While a mouse controller could certainly be additive for first-person shooters and DIY games like Super Mario Maker, but the potential for creativity is what excites me most: Nintendo’s game designers are probably already making hundreds of WarioWare microgame prototypes using mouse movement.

Another rumored feature may be a longshot, but a recently published patent from Nintendo indicates that the console can be rotated, meaning the Joy-Cons can be attached in an upside-down position. While the main purpose of that patent seems to benefit players who might want the system’s ports to be on the opposite side, Nintendo could exploit this functionality for gameplay, à la WarioWare: Twisted! or Pokémon X and Y.

Switch 2 has other hardware features that set it apart from the original Switch, including a new “C” button that might be used for a new social space and a second USB-C port. The latter may be used for something as dull as charging the Switch 2 or for connecting a set of USB-C headphones, but it opens up opportunities for Nintendo to invent weird little attachments.

We can’t discount all the other uses that Nintendo might have for its detachable Joy-Cons. Those tiny controllers are packed with haptics, motion and IR sensors, bigger buttons, and (hopefully) more reliable joysticks. While I don’t expect Nintendo to release Labo 2, it’s barely scratched the surface when it comes to jamming Joy-Cons into other things to make funky controllers.

But yes, like Ana, I desperately want the conservative era of Nintendo to end in one regard: Switch 2 better have a silly little jingle or some catchy, endlessly looping tunes for its version of the eShop.

    Cabernet Switch Review

    Cabernet Switch Review

Cabernet is a social RPG. There is no combat, just a lot of talking and acting like a vampire. It plays like a point and click adventure in a lot of ways, but its heavy on the RPG elements too. Instead of strength and speed, you put experience points into things like literature, history and science, which affects your dialog choices. You play Liza, a woman who died and wakes up in an Eastern European town full of vampires… who all speak with American accents. You are a doctor’s apprentice and spend each night doing various tasks related to the characters around you. You must be in your coffin by dawn or you die. You must also drink blood on occasion to keep you healthy. You can also turn into a bat and fly around, and go invisible.

Cabernet is decent I have to say. It does what it does well, its a social game, and pretty slow one at that. Don’t go in expecting high octane action, this isn’t that kind of game. And that is perfectly fine. Although, I have two complaints. The first are the accents which I mentioned. The game takes place in Eastern Europe, but because everyone talks like they aren’t in Eastern Europe, it takes me out of the setting, which is important for a game like this, The second is the opening trigger warning:

Cabernet is a game about vampires. Unless we’re talking Twilight, dark themes come with the territory. Do we really need a trigger warning? The game even lacks sex and gore. But that is a minor nitpick really. Overall, I give Cabernet a Recommended with an eight back-end score. It is a good social RPG that does what it does well. Don’t go in expecting a “Hard R” experience, and you’ll be fine.

Overall: Cabernet is a social RPG, meaning heavy on the dialog and characters, combat non-existent. Fine for what it is.

    Verdict: Recommended

SEC Declares Memecoins Are Not Securities

SEC Declares Memecoins Are Not Securities

On February 28, 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) made an announcement that has had a significant impact on the crypto market: meme coins are not classified as securities.

    The SEC’s Official Declare

SEC announcement marks a significant moment for the crypto community, particularly for fans of popular meme-based digital assets like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu.

According to SEC, meme coins do not include the offering and selling of securities under federal securities regulations. This decision suggests that these tokens, often created as jokes or internet phenomena, lack the characteristics typically associated with securities. The decision offers guidance for developers, investors, and traders in the meme coin market, possibly protecting them from the strict regulations governing traditional securities.

The crypto market has long awaited guidance from the SEC on how it views various digital assets. While this declaration doesn’t encompass all cryptocurrencies, it signals a nuanced approach to regulation, recognizing the unique nature of meme coins. As the industry continues to evolve, this could pave the way for further innovation or speculation in the world of decentralized finance.

Why Meme Coins Don’t Fit the Securities Mold

To understand the SEC’s decision, it’s worth looking at the legal criteria that define a security. It states that an asset is a security if it involves:

Investment of moneyIn a common enterpriseWith an expectation of profitsDerived from the efforts of others.

Meme coins, according to the SEC, don’t fully meet its standards. While buyers certainly invest

money (often with wild enthusiasm), the “common enterprise,” and “efforts of others” components appear to fall short. Many meme coins lack a centralized team promising profits or managing the project post-launch. Instead, their value often hinges on community hype, social media trends, and sheer luck, which does not align with the traditional securities model.

Take Dogecoin, for example. Created as a joke in 2013, its meteoric rise was fueled by tweets from figures like Elon Musk and a passionate online following, not a structured business plan. The SEC seems to recognize this decentralized, organic growth as distinct from the profit-driven enterprises it typically regulates.

    Implications for the Crypto Market

This ruling brings a sense of relief to the developers and teams behind meme coins. Without the looming threat of securities violations, they can focus on building communities and experimenting with new ideas.

For retail investors, the SEC’s decision provides a layer of reassurance. While these tokens remain speculative and volatile, buyers can now trade them without worrying that the SEC will retroactively deem them unregistered securities. This clarity might even attract new participants to the market, further fueling the meme coin frenzy.

    What’s Next for Meme Coins?

With the SEC’s announcement, meme coins might see a resurgence in popularity. Historically, these tokens thrive on attention, and this news could ignite fresh interest from both current traders and newcomers. Projects that were once hesitant to launch might now even flood the market.

On the flip side, the lack of securities status doesn’t make meme coins any less risky. Their value remains tied to unpredictable factors, like celebrity endorsements rather than tangible utility. Investors should be wise to approach them with caution.
