There are certain characters in pop culture who, no matter the actor portraying them, conjure up a particular look and feeling about them when they’re thought of or talked about. For instance, the general public image of Batman is someone in a cape and cowl who broods about while fighting crime, a persona that dominates despite the gulf of difference between Adam West and Christian Bale’s screen portrayals of the Caped Crusader. James Bond is undoubtedly such a character; while he’s only been played by six different actors during his 63 years on cinema screens — and these actors all brought something so unique to their portrayals that they’re frequently ranked against each other in order of personal preference — there still exists a consistency to Bond’s pop culture persona.
The reason for this is actually a fairly direct one. When Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli and Harry Saltzman formed Eon Productions in 1961 while producing their first adaptation of Bond, 1962’s “Dr. No,” they kicked off a franchise that in just a few short years would feature a repeatable formula. Broccoli and Saltzman apparently provided Roald Dahl an actual blueprint to follow when the writer was hired to pen “You Only Live Twice” in 1967, one which the producers felt was the surefire formula for a successful Bond feature. Although the Eon Bond formula was revised slightly over the decades, heirs to the company throne Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson remained true to it throughout their tenure.
However, there have famously been a couple of non-Eon Bonds to appear on the screen. One of them is, ironically, the first Eon Bond, Sean Connery, in the 1983 unofficial entry “Never Say Never Again.” While Connery in that film is still recognizably a version of the Bond we all know and love, the other example of a non-Eon screen Bond is decidedly not. Years before Eon made “Dr. No,” the CBS network licensed Bond creator Ian Fleming’s first novel for adaptation into an hour-long episode of live TV, in which Bond is portrayed in a fashion that seems completely unrecognizable in retrospect.
The Americanization of James Bond
CBS
“Casino Royale,” the first novel chronicling the adventures of British Secret Service agent James Bond by author (and former British Naval Intelligence officer) Ian Fleming, became a smash in England when it was published in 1953. Although the novel wasn’t as popular in America as it was in the UK, that didn’t stop publishers and film and television producers from seeing the potential of the material. After all, by the early ’50s, American entertainment had been suffused with pulp and detective fiction for a couple of decades, with the works of authors like Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and James M. Cain helping to build the genre we know as film noir and give audiences an appetite for hard-boiled antihero characters who enforced the law in ways that bent it. It’s no surprise, then, that producers would see Fleming’s cynical, cold agent as a potential new source of more of this type of thing.
Yet American publishers and producers, perhaps influenced by the country’s growing Cold War xenophobia, perhaps erroneously believing US audiences would be confused by Fleming’s distinctly European adventure, insisted on trying to Americanize Bond and “Casino Royale.” Thus, the novel itself was published in the US with cover art that made it look like a lurid detective story and was re-titled with the pulpier name “You Asked For It.” The reason for this change blatantly appears to be about marketing more than anything else, with Popular Library publishers emulating the detective crime novels that were already on shelves. However, according to Raymond Benson’s “The James Bond Bedside Companion,” the official reasoning was that the publisher was worried Americans wouldn’t be able to pronounce “Royale.” Curse you, extra “e!”
The one and only appearance of the American agent, ‘Jimmy’ Bond
CBS
Eschewing the deep-seated Britishness of Fleming’s novel, the CBS TV adaptation of “Casino Royale” (as part of the “Climax!” anthology series) chose to go ahead and make its hero an American nicknamed “Jimmy” Bond (the episode using the nickname just as the back cover of “You Asked For It” does), a suave cat who works for the fictional “Combined Intelligence” agency. In the episode, written by Antony Ellis and Charles Bennett (veterans of some of Alfred Hitchcock’s spy films such as “The 39 Steps” and “Sabotage”), Bond is played by Barry Nelson, himself an occasional noir fixture in films like “Shadow of the Thin Man” and “The Man with My Face.”
Although the episode naturally makes a lot of changes to Fleming’s 213-page novel by condensing it down to a 50-minute drama, it manages to retain the book’s centerpiece concept of Bond needing to best the enemy agent Le Chiffre (played by no less than Peter Lorre) at a game of baccarat. What’s odd is how several of the changes serve to further Americanize Bond, including changing his American contact Felix Leiter into a British agent named Clarence Leiter (Michael Pate). While Nelson acquits himself well enough in the role, all of these changes to Bond’s persona from Fleming’s novel leaves him a little more than a stereotypical cliché of a spy character. The special qualities of Bond already present in Fleming’s prose are nowhere to be found, and thus the initial excitement of the character and the novels died down; Fleming was even approached a few years later by CBS to develop an ongoing Bond series, but the project was scrapped before it ever went before cameras.
CBS’s ‘Casino Royale’ sets a precedent for Bond that almost was (and still could become) a reality
MGM
When Broccoli and Saltzman were casting “Dr. No,” they bandied about several names before landing on Connery, one of whom was Cary Grant (who was rejected given that the producers shrewdly wanted someone who would commit to future films in the series). Though Grant famously sported a blended British and American accent, his screen persona generally coded him as American, especially when compared to the unmistakably Scottish Connery. Thus, Bond nearly found himself established as vaguely American. However, this concept (perhaps lingering from “Casino Royale” and its adventures in America) was quickly dismissed as soon as Connery’s appeal in the role helped make Bond an international phenomenon.
Yet the possibility of an Americanized Bond did crop up again and did actually make it to the screen. …sort of. When “Octopussy,” the 13th Eon Bond production, was being developed in 1982, Roger Moore was insisting on leaving the role behind, a departure which had been rumored beginning with his preceding appearance as the character, in “For Your Eyes Only.” At first, Eon took Moore at his word and began an extensive search for his replacement. Although this search included people like Timothy Dalton (who would eventually take the role) and Michael Billington, the biggest contender for the role was an American star: James Brolin. Brolin even went as far as screen testing for the part, footage which can be seen on most home media releases of “Octopussy.” It’s undeniably odd to see the thoroughly American Brolin deliver wry bon mots as the character without that distinctive British flavor.
Fortunately (and ironically), it was Connery’s impending appearance in “Never Say Never Again” that allowed the producers to convince Moore to return, and Bond has been played by some manner of UK-raised actor ever since. Who knows, though; with the recent sale of the rights to the character to Amazon, the chance that we may yet see an American Bond may be low, but never zero. The irony is that, should it ever happen, the fanbase can’t quite criticize the choice as going against precedent, because Nelson’s “Jimmy” Bond did get to screens first.
Brad Pitt has suffered a legal blow in an ongoing suit filed against him by some of the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
The actor had built homes for these individuals in the wake of the natural disaster, but the homes reportedly developed dangerous mold, leading to the class action they filed.
Now, the legal team for these victims has won a motion to obtain vital documents during the discovery stage.
It has also been revealed that Brad Pitt had tried to block having to face deposition, claiming it was impossible due to his filming schedule.

Court Orders Brad Pitt And His Legal Team To Hand Over Vital Documents
MEGA
The legal team for some victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans has been granted their request for vital documents from Brad Pitt and his Make It Right Foundation in an ongoing $20.5 million lawsuit.
The victims had sued the Hollywood actor and his nonprofit in a class action some years back, arguing that he built defective houses for them in the wake of the natural disaster.
Pitt had spent $12 million through his Make It Right Project to build these homes, which were designed to be ecologically sustainable.
However, most of the homes have since been overcome by mold and other significant issues that have immensely affected some of the owners.

In the meantime, it remains unclear what the exact documents are, but there are reportedly over 70,000 documents plus 30,000 pages of financial information.
The homeowners’ legal team is now seeking to hire forensic accountants to review these documents ahead of an eventual trial.

Brad Pitt Tried To Avoid Deposition
MEGA
As part of the recent revelations, it became known that Pitt had tried to avoid being deposed.
The actor’s lawyers had claimed that he had no relevant information to give and that his schedule wouldn’t allow him.
“Mr Pitt’s motion picture production schedule presents concerns that extend beyond his personal time and attention,” the “F1” star’s lawyers claimed in filings per The US Sun.
“Most notably, Mr Pitt’s absence from film production in the event of a deposition could cause major scheduling issues with potential legal and financial consequences for the studio.”
Pitt’s attorneys also argued that an in-person deposition will be costly to the actor if he is forced to appear.

“In addition, it is likely Mr Pitt will be on location in Europe over the next several months, meaning that any in-person deposition will involve costly and time-consuming travel,” they added.

A Status Conference Is Scheduled For Next Month
MEGA
Although this information about the motion only recently came to light, it was actually filed in April last year.
However, back in June, the presiding judge ruled the motion moot, as the discovery process had yet to be completed.
Next up in the lawsuit is a status conference scheduled to take place in the coming month.
The conference will likely determine a date for the trial and outline the progress of the case.
The Lawsuit Against Brad Pitt Was Almost Settled In 2022
MEGA
The legal battle has dragged on to this point after a proposed settlement agreement between the parties collapsed in 2022.
At the time, celeb-backed eco-charity Global Green agreed to pay a $20.5 million settlement on behalf of Pitt and his charity organization, but reports later revealed that the intended donors never had such an amount of money.
“Brad had supported Global Green many years ago, so when they approached his team stating ‘$20.5M in funding’ had been secured by their ‘generous donors,’ there was interest in considering their proposal,” Pitt’s rep told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement in 2023.
Article continues below advertisement
In the statement, the rep also claimed that “Global Green represented themselves as having already obtained these funds” and also promised Pitt that they intended to use it to resolve “all claims in the ongoing lawsuit for the benefit of the homeowners.”
“It was incredibly surprising for the plaintiffs, the defendants, and their counsel to learn that the funds Global Green claimed multiple times were secured had not in fact been committed or raised,” the rep further remarked.
Brad Pitt Settled His Divorce From Angelina Jolie After 8 Years
MEGA
Besides his legal battle with the Hurricane Katrina victims, Pitt still has other legal troubles in his life, particularly his legal feud with his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, over their Chateau Miraval winery.
However, the former Hollywood power couple finally settled their divorce after eight years, as seen in documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court on December 30.
Although financial records were not disclosed in the documents, the Daily Mail reported that Jolie walked away $80 million richer after dragging Pitt “through the ringer” throughout the lengthy court battle.
The movie stars exes are said to be relieved that to have finally ended their divorce, although they still have more legal battles ahead due to their business dispute.
Sister Wives star Kody Brown has one of his finest moments when talking about Robyn Brown on the new episodes about to roll out as Season 19 returns to the TLC screen. In a clip from the “Tell All” segment with Sukanya Krishnan, he blows up when he doesn’t seem to have an answer to a few questions she asks him.
Sister Wives: Kody Brown at a Loss for Words?
The Sister Wives fan-favorite interviewer, Sukanya Krishnan, asks Kody Brown questions that aren’t jaded in any sense of the imagination. They are straightforward. But, it looks like as she waits for his answer, he implodes. Oops, there goes Kody, and at one point, he even shuts down the interview.
Sister Wives | TLC
Since the last few seasons encomposed Kody’s polygamous marriage fracturing and then severing, you would expect the interviewer to talk about it. But when she does Kody looks uncomfortable. likely hitting on a sore spot for the Sister Wives patriarch.
So, instead of answering the question, he turns it back on her. He groups Sukanya in with those who make him defend his choices. Kody tells Sukanay that he is so tired of defending himself for loving Robyn.
Kody Defends Himself for Loving Robyn Brown
Sister Wives fans wonder if this will be Kody’s new catchphrase when attempting to divert the blame for his family’s demise away from himself. We all know we cannot help who we fall in love with and it looks like this is a new campaign coming from the father of 18.
Fans don’t blame him for loving Robyn. But, what they do find kind of crummy was how he took on four wives but only loved one of them. Despite saying he never loved any of his wives, except for Robyn, in the beginning, he prided himself on being able to love four women equally. With an emphasis on equally.
What people don’t get was how he treated his three original wives. He refused to ask them for a divorce, but instead made their lives so miserable that all they could do was leave.
Sister Wives Patriarch Makes All-Things Robyn His Life
Sister Wives fans suggest Kody Brown can yell at the interviewer all he wants, it still doesn’t change the facts. A side effect came along with Meri Brown, Christine Brown, and Janelle Brown severing themselves from Kody.
Because of this, Kody also seemed to disown his kids. At the same time he is estranged from many of his children, he becomes this super father to Robyn’s kids. He does things Robyn’s children that his kids could only wish he’d done with them.
And because a lot of this hits the Sister Wives screen, his estranged kids watch as he coddles Robyn’s kids. He took Aurora Brown to get her ears pierced in what some fans tag as a “creepy scene”. Kody praises Robyn’s daughter for her respect towards Kody. Fans suggest he sounds like he’s a proud father praising a toddler.
It is like Kody highlights Aurora’s actions as an obiedent daughter, which is something he claimed he didn’t get from the other wives’ kids. He is seen on screen having game night with Robyn and her kids. There’s just so much of this stuff that his estranged kids likely watch, which probably rubs salt into their already deep wounds. This is what rattles fans, not who Kody loves.
So, from where the Sister Wives fans sit today, they don’t care that he loves Robyn. What does peeve them off is the lack of love he shows his kids from the other mothers on the TLC screen.
Head backto Soap Dirt for the latest scoop on Sister Wives.

Abilities that reignite the Mad Dog of Shimano’s lost spark.
Your crew members are the building blocks of Goromaru’s firepower and defense. The higher their level, the stronger their stats, and, in turn, the stronger your ship will be in naval combat.
Thus, my guide aims to discuss how you can gather experience for your crew members. Join me as I discuss those optimal farming methods.
Gifting Items & Souvenirs
Firstly, the simplest way to provide your crew members with chunks of leveling experience is to offer them various gifts and souvenirs on board the Goromaru.
You can find tons of presents in gift shops in Hawaii and even convenience stores, ranging from dried fruit packs to paintings and even assorted chocolate boxes.
This is certainly not the most optimal way, because at best, these gifts can only provide around 500 to 700 EXP depending on the gift, which is average.
There are merchants at lighthouse checkpoints at sea that sell these gift items. You can actually hoard these in your storage box since they each have an inventory limit, such as bouquets.
Put the gifts in your storage box, and then reset the outer world instance by going below the deck on the Goromaru. This will reset the lighthouse merchant’s inventory so you can keep purchasing these gifts.

Preparing Feasts
One of the newest additions to the game is the ability to cook various kinds of meals and dishes using different ingredients you find in the world.
There are some particular dishes, such as the Pirate Meal for Ten, which you can cook to host a feast for your crew in the captain’s quarters. There are also a couple of dishes which can raise their morale to help regain their gameplay prowess.
Much like the gift items, you can also buy cooking ingredients from those aforementioned lighthouse merchants, such as fish or bugs.
These dishes can provide a good amount of crewmate experience, but I strongly recommend these when you need to level up newer crewmates in bulk.
These feast events don’t significantly affect higher-level crew members, so this is a great option for simultaneously leveling multiple brand-new crew members.
The Madlantis Coliseum
Believe it or not, the best way to farm crew member experience in Pirate Yakuza is through the Madlantis Coliseum.
And by that, I specifically mean the Shooter’s Garden bout in the Madlantis Mania section. It has two rounds, and with a solid team of your own, it should take 40 seconds to clear this efficiently.
The exp gained is around 4500, which is perfect for us to min-max most of the crew members. In my tests, a few of my level 10 crew members could instantly gain 5 to 7 levels before they started hitting diminishing returns.
The only major downside is that you may need a strong crew to farm it in your initial runs, but once you get a couple of runs in, the levels should pile up steadily.
Also, when you hit min-max levels for a few of your favorite crew members, I strongly advise dumping gifts into them just so you can hit their level cap. But that’s up to you, since they’ll gain experience regardless as long as they’re on your active crew.

What do you do after amassing a fortune from cryptocurrency? Build a space station, of course.
That’s exactly what Ripple co-founder Jed McCaleb is doing, according to a report by Bloomberg.
While crypto investors say they’re “going to the moon” when Bitcoin surges, McCaleb, a longtime industry pioneer, is aiming for the real thing.
“It’s super important that people take this leap from where we are today to this potential world where there’s a lot of people living off the Earth,” McCaleb told Bloomberg. “There’s not that many folks that are willing to dedicate the amount of resources and time and risk tolerance that I am.”
McCaleb’s $1 billion bet, entirely self-funded, is that Vast Space—the California-based aerospace company he founded in 2021—can build and launch a functioning station. The goal is to become a candidate to replace the International Space Station, which is scheduled for decommissioning in 2030.
McCaleb, who co-founded the cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox in 2010, Ripple in 2011, and then Stellar in 2014, is now investing his estimated $3.2 billion fortune—largely from XRP sales—into Vast Space.
“This is a big, bold vision by Jed McCaleb,” Ripple co-founder and Executive Chairman Chris Larsen wrote on X. “America used to pursue new frontiers like this before skidding into bureaucracy and doubt. I’m rooting for Vast’s success.”
Vast develops artificial gravity space stations. Many of its employees bring aerospace experience, including refugees from Elon Musk’s SpaceX. These orbital habitats are designed to simulate gravity by rotating to create centrifugal force while offering the comforts of home.
The company recently revealed the final design for Haven-1, its first station module. To put Haven-1 into orbit, Vast is partnering with SpaceX, which will use its Falcon9 rockets to carry Vast’s Haven-1 modules into space. According to the Vast website, the first launch of Haven-1 is scheduled for May 2026 for a two-week mission above the Earth.

The concept of artificial gravity stations has long been a staple in science fiction, ranging from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi classic film “2001: A Space Odyssey” to Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film “Interstellar.”

While Haven-1 is a single module designed to operate independently or dock with SpaceX boosters, the next-generation Haven-2 is being developed as a modular system. Several Haven-2 units could be connected to form a larger, expandable station.

Public-sector space agencies, including NASA and the European Space Agency, are increasingly turning to private-sector companies to get the astronauts and the resources they need into space and back. McCaleb is among a growing number of private citizens stepping up to meet that need, including Musk, Richard Branson, and Jeff Bezos.
They represent a growing roster of private companies and national space agencies—including Axiom Space, Blue Origin, Voyager Space, Airbus, and China’s CNSA—that are racing to build the next generation of space stations tailored for research, manufacturing, tourism, and long-term habitation.

A successful launch in May will strengthen Vast’s place in the emerging private space race, and securing a NASA contract would be essential for the company’s long-term viability.

Lessons in 3D and AI design at University of Fashion (Image credit: University of Fashion)
In an industry where fashion trends can come and go at warp speed, you’d expect our industry to embrace 3D & AI with open arms. Not so fast.
Over the past 50 years, I have witnessed initial resistance to using CAD tools for drawing and PDS for pattern making. But today the industry can’t imagine doing without programs like Photoshop & Illustrator along with digital pattern drafting and grading tools.
With the launch of our 3D and AI for fashion design lessons at University of Fashion, we have received emails that challenge the use of these tools as “real designing.” However, I’m here to tell you that these are just tools and, they are here to stay. While some people see AI as a threat, and that it could replace certain jobs, the reality is that it’s a tool used to enhance human work.
McKinsey analysts predict Generative AI could boost fashion industry profits by $150 billion to $275 billion by 2030 and in their recent survey claim that “73% of global fashion executives consider generative AI to be an important strategic priority”.
Therefore, embracing AI for tasks like designing, merchandising, production, marketing, promotion and sales is the way to go. In this blog post I will explore how some fashion brands have already incorporated AI into their design process and are even using it to create legacy archives.
Fashion’s AI Early Adopters
Using AI for Trend Prediction & On-Demand Fashion
Desigual launched an “On Demand” collection designed with AI technology (Image credit: cross-border-magazine.com)
In 2023, the Spanish fashion brand Desigual launched its first Online Only On Demand collection. The garments and denim bags were produced once the customer bought them online, with an estimated manufacturing time of 90 days.
This innovation allowed the brand to make better forecasts for raw material needs and logistics. According to Desigual, the key to success in this process has been learning to manage the technology to enhance creativity. This strategy not only improves efficiency but also offers a more personalized and sustainable fashion experience for consumers.

In 2023, designer Norma Kamali partnered with Meta Maison to develop a proprietary AI model trained on her archives. In February 2024, she showcased her AI-generated designs in an installation called, Fashion Hallucinations. Kamali told Glossy magazine, “AI is set to shape the industry’s approach to archiving and to facilitate creative longevity”.
Consider AI tools not as replacements for your work, but as powerful allies that amplify your abilities and bring your imaginative concepts to life.
