How Paul Giamatti’s Heartbreaking Black Mirror Episode Connects To Season 1’s Darkest Story – SlashFilm

This post contains spoilers for the “Black Mirror” episodes “Eulogy” and “The Entire History of You.”

“Black Mirror” fans often worry that the show has run out of genuine surprises or meaningful things to say. There’s a familiar formula now to how a typical “Black Mirror” episode should go down: a seemingly sympathetic character is introduced to sci-fi technology, the tech turns out be eviler than first assumed, and the main character is revealed to be more complicit in this evil than we would’ve guessed. For the character to be a pure innocent victim of the technology isn’t enough; the horror doesn’t land unless the victim at least partially brings it upon themself.

On the surface at least, “Eulogy” checks off all of those boxes. Paul Giamatti’s character Phillip is introduced as a lonely, heartbroken man, who’s asked to use a sentient picture-enhancing computer to revisit key moments from a relationship in his twenties. The technology allows him to walk into old photos, letting his memories fill in and enhance the stuff existing outside the frame. It’s a cool concept but it’s not one Phillip is thrilled to take part in. He hates his recently-deceased ex-girlfriend Carol, and this process of revisiting his happy moments with her quickly brings out his vindictive side. He can’t stop talking about how Carol was selfish and she ruined his life.

But as we watch him talk about Carol, it’s clear there’s a lot of guilt underneath his bitterness. Around halfway through we find out that Phillip cheated on her just as much as she cheated on him. We also learn that he had a drinking problem, that he hadn’t taken her musical interests as seriously as he should’ve, and that he just wasn’t a great boyfriend in general. Like many of “Black Mirror” protagonists over the show’s run, Phillip is no saint.

‘Eulogy’ is the opposite of ‘The Entire History of You’

Some fans might compare “Eulogy” to an episode like season 4’s “Crocodile,” which features similar memory-scanning technology. Or maybe they’ll compare it to season 3’s standout “San Junipero,” a love story where the characters get to revisit the decades of their youth. For me it’s most reminiscent of a story from all the way back in season 1: “The Entire History of You.” In that episode, a jealous boyfriend obsessively rewinds and over-analyzes moments between him and his wife, eventually confirming that she’s not only cheated on him but has knowingly had a baby with the man she cheated with.

I’ve always disliked “The Entire History of You,” not because the writing is bad but because I found the episode miserable even by “Black Mirror” standards. The story’s made more disturbing by the undercurrent of misogyny throughout it: the main character is controlling and vindictive towards his wife, which only makes it messier and more uncomfortable when his suspicions about her are proven 100% correct. We never actually get the wife’s full side of the story here; we only see her from her angry, bitter husband’s point of view.

“Eulogy” is also about the breakdown of a relationship, complete with a reveal that the woman involved had cheated and had another man’s kid. But even though the episode also sticks to the man’s perspective — to the point where we don’t see Carol’s face until the very end — “Eulogy” is more interested in asking how the woman feels. As Phillip trash-talks Carol throughout, the Guide he’s with (a digital consciousness following him along in the memory simulation, played by Patsy Ferran) is constantly nudging him (and the viewer) to consider Carol’s point of view.

What happens to the wife and baby after “The Entire History of You” is a total mystery, but “Eulogy” follows up on Carol and her kid, finishing their story in a dignified way. There is a lot more to Carol than what she did to Phillip, and the episode never forgets to make sure we know this.

Black Mirror gives Paul Giamatti a spectacular acting moment

“The Entire History of You” is still an effective critique of toxic masculinity, with the main character eventually regretting his obsessive behavior. But it’s a cold, cruel examination of the topic, one that often feels like it’s sneering at humanity itself. “Eulogy,” meanwhile, is optimistic at its core. Phillip slowly proves himself worth rooting for, and the memory-enhancing technology here is undoubtedly a net positive for the world.

Much like Paul Giamatti’s character’s arc in “The Holdovers,” you can see life returning to grumpy old Phillip, little by little, as he gets deeper into reminiscing about Carol. By the time the episode reaches its biggest reveal — Phillip discovers Carol had left a very important letter for him — all of Phillip’s protestations have dropped: this guy still loves Carol deeply, no matter how much he’s claimed otherwise. Giamatti’s performance hints at this from minute one of course, but it’s a thrill to see Phillip figure this out for himself. It’s cathartic to watch him go from reluctantly pulling out a few photos to excitedly rummaging through his old things for anything Carol-related.

When Phillip finally gets to see young Carol’s face again, revisiting his long-sought memory of her playing an original song on her cello, Giamatti’s playing a man who’s finally let himself feel again. He’s been through a sad journey with lots of ugly moments, including one especially devastating gut punch in the final act, but unlike most “Black Mirror” protagonists he’s come out of it a better person. “The Entire History of You” was about a man who succumbs to his rage and insecurities; “Eulogy” is about a man who lets them go.

Michael Fabricant was the first housemate evicted from this year’s Celebrity Big Brother series.

The ITV reality show kicked off on Monday (April 7) with AJ Odudu and Will Best returning as hosts. The diverse line-up includes the likes of presenter Angellica Bell, EastEnders legend Patsy Palmer, and US entertainer JoJo Siwa.

Yesterday (April 10), it was announced that Corrie star Jack Shepherd, Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke, and former MP Michael were up for eviction. They faced the public vote where fans voted for who they wanted to save.

Unfortunately for Michael, AJ and Will revealed tonight (April 11) they had received the least amount of votes, resulting in them becoming the first evictee of the series.

Following the announcement, there was a divide on social media.

‘Quite sad to see Michael go’

“Was obvious it would be Michael out of the three,” one user wrote on X.

“I liked Michael, he had a personality and was quite a likeable character,” another person shared.

“Actually quite sad to see Michael Fabricant go, if you allow yourself to take politics out of it, it’s an entertainment show at the end of the day and he was entertaining,” a third remarked.

“I am in no way a tory supporter, but my gosh, michael was an absolute sweetheart and i loved watching him. I’m absolutely gutted he’s been evicted,” a fourth user expressed.

“That Tory/Conservative Maggot Michael is Evicted!! Hooray!!!” a fifth said.

“Wait Michael come back you’re adorable,” a sixth shared.

It should have been Mickey evicted!’

On the other hand, many believed that Mickey should have been the celebrity to get the boot.

MICHAEL????? OVER MICKEY???? UK PUBLIC YOU’VE [BLEEP]ED IT ONCE AGAIN,” one passionate viewer stated.

It should have been Mickey evicted! I feel so bad for Michael,” another shared.

Who on earth kept Mickey in, he doesn’t even participate only when he’s told,” a third said.

“They evicted the wrong Michael,” a fourth wrote.

While appearing on the show, Mickey has continued to rub viewers the wrong way. During the launch night, he ogled and grabbed AJ Odudu. While in the house, he later made homophobic remarks to JoJo and body-shamed Donna Preston.

Good Old Games aka GOG is having a massive sale on a whole bunch of older PC games. Stuff like Deus Ex, Fear, Theme Hospital, Sim City 4, Fallout New Vegas and many more are part of the deal. But don’t wait too long, as the sale ends on April 25.

On April 10, GOG launched a new Classics Promo game sale featuring 1000 games from across the last few decades. The sale is only available on PC and you don’t need any other software to play them. Just set up an account, add a payment method and start buying and installing old games.

Many titles are marked down below $10 or even $5. And some of the games on sale are part of GOG’s awesome preservation program, which means they’ll stay playable for a very long time. Even if the publisher removes the game from GOG, the store has committed to preserving it and making sure it stays playable on modern hardware.

I’ve searched through the sale and listed some of the best games and deals I spotted. Here are some highlights:

Chrissy Teigen on How Her Son Developed a ‘Special Bond’ With New Pup

Puppy love! Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have welcomed a new member to their furry family with the adoption of their rescue dog from Wags & Walks.

The couple, who are parents to Wren, 1, Esti, 2, Miles, 6, and Luna, 8, have a fun-filled house with their poodle, Petey, basset hound, Pearl, and mixed terrier, Pebbles, and their latest addition, bulldog, Dudley.

While the pup initially needed some extra tender, loving care after suffering from pneumonia, Dudley is settled and adjusted with the help of the non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing at-risk dogs from overcrowded shelters.

“He is still a puppy at the heart of it, so it was a rough few weeks, but when he came out the other side it was really beautiful,” the author, 39, tells ET.

“It was hard to hear him want to play, jump on our bodies, have so much fun with us, and play with the kids, because his little body couldn’t handle it. We tried to keep him as calm as possible, love on him, just watch movies together and have quiet time,” she adds.

And that paid off because now he feels right at home.

“He is having a really good time with the other dogs. … They have all really fit in well together and it has been fun to see how they interact together,” the model shares.

          ET

The same sentiment applies for the furry fellow’s relationships with Teigen and Legend’s children, especially their son, Miles.

“Dudley really loves Miles. They have this special bond. When Miles walks in the door from football or basketball practice, he goes straight for Dudley, and Dudley gets so excited to see him,” she notes.

This may be due to the dog’s fun-loving nature.

He is a little tank. … He is tiny, but strong and just so happy. We are trying to train him, and he knows that he can get away with murder with me. … Dudley definitely takes advantage of how much I let him be free. … I am trying to be better about it, but it is hard because he is just so cute,” she exclaims.

To help their pet learn and grow, the family has been making sure to feed him premium food and goods from their company, Kismet

“As part of dog training, you need to be able to reward them and show when they do something good. … He loves the food, of course, but he gets really excited for the dog treats,” she shares.

Who plays Carl Webster on Coronation Street? Inside the private life and Hollywood career of star Jonathan Howard

Who plays Carl Webster on Coronation Street? Inside the private life and Hollywood career of star Jonathan Howard

Tonight’s episode of Coronation Street (Friday, April 11) marks the Weatherfield debut of Jonathan Howard as newcomer Carl Webster. Last month, the soap announced that three new faces would be joining the cast – Carl, Theo, and a recast James Bailey.

Sparks have already begun to fly with Carl’s arrival on the soap, with Kev’s little brother immediately clashing with his wife, Abi, during a chance meeting at Fresco. And, with Carl said to be at the heart of a dramatic affair storyline, he’ll soon find himself in the thick of it.

But what do we know about the man who plays Carl Webster?

Jonathan makes his debut on Coronation Street tonight (Credit: ITV)

Who does Jonathan Howard play on Coronation Street?

Jonathan is playing Kevin and Debbie’s younger half-brother, Carl. The siblings share a father in Bill Webster. Carl is the son of his second wife, Elaine. He has been much mentioned on the soap over the years,  but never physically appeared until now.

Speaking on Carl’s arrival, Jonathan said: “He comes into Weatherfield to ostensibly be with his brother because he’s found out he’s got cancer. But then we’ll discover Carl’s got some money issues back in Germany where he’s been living.”

He continued: “I don’t think Carl is going to be too bad but I don’t think he’s going to be good either. I think his heart is in the right place but he might be holding on to some resentment towards his brother because he’s left him to be on his own his whole life.”

As for his attitude to romance, Jonathan said: “He’s maybe a little bit selfish, especially between his trousers sometimes!”

Promotional shot of Carl Webster on Coronation Street

Jonathan has appeared in several high-profile movies and TV shows (Credit: ITV)

What else has Jonathan Howard been in?

This isn’t Jonathan’s first rodeo. Having made his TV debut in 2001, Jonathan has a lengthy career in film and television. Appearing in episodes of Doctors, Holby City and Hollyoaks, the actor has appeared in small roles in British TV over the past two decades – including eight episodes of the Matt LeBlanc sitcom Episodes.

He has also appeared in a number of big-budget films. This includes World War Z, Thor: The Dark World, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the 2022 horror film The Lair.

            How old is Jonathan Howard?

Born in January 1987, Jonathan is 38 years old. This makes him slightly younger than character Carl, who was born in December 1986 – in Germany, where his dad lived at the time.

            Is Jonathan Howard married?

Jonathan is married to French actress Elodie Yung, 44. Viewers will best recognise the star for her role as assassin Elektra Natchios in the Netflix version of Marvel’s Daredevil. She also appears in the crime drama The Cleaning Lady, which recently aired its fourth season.

In 2018, Elodie and Jonathan welcomed their first daughter together.

Coronation Street fans dismayed at plans for ‘affair’ between Carl and Abi Webster

He’s only just appeared on the show, but rumours are already at fever pitch that he’s set for an affair with his sister in-law. A source told The Sun: “It’s the ultimate betrayal, sleeping with your husband’s hunky, younger brother but Abi just can’t help herself.”

This hasn’t gone down well with fans, who reacted with anger at the news.

“So I’m confused with the line about building up the Webster clan because surely this is just breaking them. Cheating on your husband who is being treated for cancer is pretty low. Then we have the whole up and coming Debbie storyline,” wrote one fan.

“Oh my, it just keeps getting worse,” despaired another.

“This is terrible. They need to scrap this storyline ASAP!” a third begged.

Will the soap really go ahead with Abi’s betrayal of Kevin?

6 huge Coronation Street spoilers for next week (April 14th-18th)

Coronation Street usually airs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV.

The Enduring Legacy of Back to the Future

For nearly four decades, the Back to the Future trilogy has remained a beloved staple in cinema history, enchanting audiences with its timeless charm and captivating storytelling. With its unforgettable quotes and iconic scenes, the franchise continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans worldwide. At the heart of this cinematic masterpiece lies Thomas F. Wilson’s portrayal of the notorious villain, Biff Tannen. Yet, surprisingly, Wilson’s journey to embracing this iconic role was met with initial reluctance. Thomas F. Wilson net worth: Thomas F. Wilson is an actor and comedian who has a net worth of $4 million

              Thomas F. Wilson’s Initial Reservations

Despite the enduring popularity of Back to the Future, Thomas F. Wilson, the actor behind Biff Tannen, initially hesitated to take on the role of the notorious bully. In a candid revelation, Wilson expressed his apprehension about portraying a character known for his antagonistic behavior. He admitted that playing a bully was a departure from his usual roles and challenged his personal aversion to such characters.

Wilson’s reluctance stemmed from his own experiences with bullying during his youth. As he candidly shared in a YouTube documentary, Wilson recalled being a target of bullying due to his slender frame, artistic interests, and struggles with asthma. These personal encounters with bullies created a stark juxtaposition with the character of Biff Tannen, leading Wilson to question whether he was the right fit for the role.

Thomas F. Wilson has spoken openly about his initial reluctance to play Biff Tannen in Back to the Future, citing several reasons:

              1. Moral Objection: Wilson disliked the character’s bullying nature and felt playing him could be seen as condoning such behavior. He worried about how audiences might perceive him in the role.

              2. Typecasting Concerns: While he recognized Biff’s potential, Wilson feared becoming typecast as a villain and limiting his future acting opportunities.

              3. Character Complexity: Wilson initially found Biff one-dimensional and struggled to find depth or nuance in his motivations. He felt portraying him would be a challenge.

              4. Physicality: Biff’s physical traits, including his posture and swagger, were alien to Wilson’s natural demeanor. He worried about feeling awkward and inauthentic embodying the character.

However, director Robert Zemeckis and producer Bob Gale were persistent and convinced him by:

Highlighting the comedic potential: They emphasized the humor in Biff’s performance and how it could be used to highlight his flaws.
Promising character development: They assured Wilson that Biff would evolve throughout the trilogy, becoming more complex and interesting.
Offering creative freedom: They granted Wilson creative input on shaping Biff’s portrayal, allowing him to add comedic touches and nuances.

Ultimately, Wilson accepted the role and poured his talent into it. His performance as Biff Tannen became iconic and contributed significantly to the film’s success. He has even grown fond of the character, appreciating his comedic potential and the challenges it presented.

Here are some additional points to consider:

Wilson’s reservations are understandable, considering the character’s negative nature.
His initial concerns about typecasting proved unfounded, as he has enjoyed a diverse acting career.
Taking the role ultimately proved a wise decision, propelling him to fame and showcasing his comedic talent.

              Confronting Personal Demons

Wilson’s candid reflection on his past experiences shed light on the internal conflict he faced when considering the role of Biff Tannen. Despite his reservations, Wilson recognized the opportunity to challenge himself as an actor and delve into the complexities of the character. While his own experiences as a victim of bullying seemed at odds with portraying a bully on screen, Wilson’s personal journey ultimately fueled his performance and added depth to his portrayal of Biff.

              Embracing the Role

Despite his initial hesitation, Thomas F. Wilson ultimately embraced the role of Biff Tannen, delivering a performance that would solidify his place in cinematic history. His portrayal of the iconic villain captivated audiences and showcased his versatility as an actor. Wilson’s commitment to the character, despite his personal reservations, is a testament to his dedication to his craft and his willingness to push boundaries as an actor.

The Enduring Legacy of Back to the Future

Last year, the cast of Back to the Future reunited for Fan Expo Portland, delighting fans with their presence and nostalgia. While the possibility of another movie or reboot remains uncertain, the enduring legacy of Back to the Future lives on through its dedicated fanbase and timeless appeal. For Thomas F. Wilson, his portrayal of Biff Tannen will forever be remembered as a defining moment in his career, showcasing his talent and versatility as an actor.

              Who is Biff Tannen?

Biff Tannen is a fictional character and the main antagonist in the Back to the Future trilogy. He is portrayed by actor Thomas F. Wilson in all three films, as well as the Universal Studios ride and the animated series.

Biff is a bully and a coward who makes Marty McFly’s life miserable throughout the trilogy. He is also shown to be ambitious and power-hungry, as he eventually becomes a wealthy casino owner in the alternate timeline created by Marty’s interference with the past.

Here are some of Biff’s key characteristics:

Bully: Biff is a classic bully who enjoys picking on weaker people, especially Marty McFly. He is often seen with his gang of friends, who help him carry out his schemes.
Coward: Despite his bravado, Biff is actually a coward who is afraid of anyone who stands up to him. This is especially evident in his interactions with George McFly, Marty’s father.
Ambitious: Biff has a strong desire for power and wealth. This is shown in his attempts to become rich and successful, even if it means resorting to illegal or unethical means.
Ruthless: Biff is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants, even if it means hurting others. This is shown in his willingness to cheat, steal, and even threaten violence.

              TongTong Switch Review

              0
              TongTong Switch Review

This review of Tongtong is filler content. Not really a game I care about, just exists so that this site has content on it. I doubt anyone will even read this review. The reason I say that is because this isn’t a game. It’s a glorified slot machine. The game claims to be a storefront arcade game from 1987. The only reference I can find to it is this screenshot from the eShop. Google turns up nothing because the real name of the game is in Japanese and not TongTong.

The image above spells the game out. Spend medals, choose an animal, if three or more animals appear, you win medals. If you collect seven pandas on the side, you play a bonus game. You basically get all of TongTong in the below video, minus the bonus game:

That’s TongTong, its a kids slot machine, which begs the question, why was this released here in Switch form? Was anyone clamoring for this? I doubt it. This is a filler game, designed to take up space in the eShop, but nobody actually buys it, because its stupid and pointless. It is also glorified gambling sold to 80s children, but that’s a completely different issue. This is not worth buying, not worth playing. Heck, I’m not even going to write 300 words on this cause I really don’t care about it. This is filler content, after all. Tongtong gets a Not Recommended with a three back-end score(because cause it works).

Overall: Tongtong is a kids slot machine from 80s Japan. Devoid of its arcade cabinet roots, it is a complete waste of time and money.

              Verdict: Not Recommended
