The 5 Best Horror Movies Where Nobody Dies – SlashFilm

The 5 Best Horror Movies Where Nobody Dies – SlashFilm

Does someone die in every horror movie ever made? The answer is no, as counterintuitive as that may seem. Indeed, some entries in the genre rely solely on tense atmosphere or implied terror to create a cathartic experience. On the flip side, there are horror films where everybody dies, the lack of survivors underlining the utter bleakness of the world that the characters inhabit. Examples include John Carpenter’s “The Thing,” whose ending pretty much seals the fate of the two remaining survivors, and George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead,” which ends with the brutal death of the potential final boy. Multiple deaths are also a staple of the slasher genre, which often raises the stakes via the harrowing arc of a lone survivor who must find a way to persevere against all odds.

Circling back to horror movies where absolutely nobody dies, I have compiled a list of five such popular films that feature zero deaths and rely heavily on atmospheric thrills to induce terror. Discourse surrounding this topic tends to include 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project,” but I have excluded that seminal found-footage horror flick since its offscreen deaths are heavily implied (even though the true nature of the killer remains ambiguous). While there’s an argument to be made that the events of “The Blair Witch Project” are merely paranoid hallucinations or triggered by something more terrifyingly mundane, either way there’s ample reason to believe that no one survives the film.

Without further ado, let us dive into these movies and explore what makes them effectively frightening despite their lack of character deaths.

    5. Flatliners (1990)

For a movie that is all about simulating near-death, it is surprising that Joel Schumacher’s “Flatliners” does not actually kill off any of its characters. However, the constant tension evoked by the film’s premise flirts with the idea of doing just that, even as the tone flits between taut tension and pure camp. In “Flatliners,” med student Nelson (Kiefer Sutherland) convinces his peers to flatline him for a minute before resuscitation with defibrillators, the goal being to discover life after death. The fine line between curiosity and recklessness is walked throughout, especially when every “flatlined” student experiences a horrifying vision linked to their psychological impulses during the one-minute window.

The horror inherent in the film stems from the literal manifestation of individual sins or trauma, which come back in tangible ways to haunt the characters after they return from the near-death simulation. For instance, Rachel (Julia Roberts) comes very close to death during her flatlining after her friends are unable to revive her, but she survives after reliving the harrowing memory of her father’s suicide. The characters’ desire to solve one of the biggest mysteries about life — What happens after death? — comes at the terrible cost of having to confront the horrors of their pasts. This is a film about personal hells and the inescapable nature of guilt, which always finds a way to gnaw at one’s soul.

    4. The Others (2001)

Everyone loves a good ghost story, and “The Others” checks every box when it comes to telling a spooky little tale about a haunting. The year is 1945, and Grace (Nicole Kidman) resides in a lovely gothic mansion with her two children, who suffer from light sensitivity and are required to follow a long list of specific instructions for their wellbeing. The arrival of three individuals in search of employment, whom Grace hires as caretakers of the estate, coincides with hauntings that shake an already paranoid Grace to the core. Doors are banged shut in her face, musical instruments come alive in the dead of night, and at one point in “The Others,” one of the children gets possessed during an innocent game of dress-up. As the scares ramp up, the film casts the illusion of heading in a certain direction, only to make a hard left when you least expect it.

The “twist” at the end of “The Others” is talked about a lot, and for good reason; the film builds up suspense with the aid of traditional genre tropes only to completely subvert them to convincing ends. If we are being technical here, — (major spoilers ahead!) — the fates of Grace and her children do count as deaths, but they have been dead all along, and are simply not aware of it. We share their collective ignorance until the spell is broken and take their lived experiences as proof of life, which the film utilizes in its favor to make the surprising nature of the twist ending stick the landing. And it does.

    3. Poltergeist (1982)

Written and produced by Steven Spielberg, “Poltergeist” feels like the quintessential Spielbergian experience, but it was, in fact, not directed by him. Instead, Tobe Hooper’s capable hands shaped this classic tale into an extraordinarily moving piece of horror fueled by the need to protect the ones we love. “Poltergeist” is a ghost story that relies on relatively few supernatural special effects. Instead, the focus is on the Freelings, who go through hell in the planned community of Cuesta Verde after an inexplicable poltergeist intrusion. However, the real culprits behind the situation turn out to be capitalistic opportunists: the real estate developers who disregard the sanctity of life to prioritize profits, no matter what the cost.

When Hooper does indulge in technical special effects to evoke scares, such as when a tree limb crashes through a window or when the Freelings’ young daughter Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) is sucked into a portal, the results are haunting and eerie. No matter how outlandish the hauntings get, the emotional core of the film remains painfully authentic. Here, a seemingly perfect family unit is disrupted by supernatural entities, forcing its members to prove their love for one another by fighting an evil beyond their comprehension. There are several instances where death seems imminent, but “Poltergeist” opts for a safe return to order. In the end, the Freelings are able to successfully escape the source of their trauma and live another day.

    2. The Conjuring (2013)

“The Conjuring” might have fared well enough as a run-of-the-mill possession horror film, even without James Wan bringing greater emotional depth to the frequent jump scares and in-your-face moments. The popularity of the larger “Conjuring” franchise, especially this particular entry, can be attributed to several standout sequences that relish in the gleeful eeriness of an entity toying with its oblivious targets. The terrors that the Perrons experience in this film cannot be explained or quantified by anyone except Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively), who harbor their own grief in a world where demonic entities lurk within objects and people. Instead of simply fulfilling the role of the “seer” who anticipates the terrors to come, the Warrens wrangle with the anxieties that are an intrinsic part of their jobs, along with the risks that come with being exposed to those who dwell on the other side.

Admittedly, an animal dies in “The Conjuring,” but ultimately no human beings are permanently harmed here — even after the demonic entity named Bathsheba terrorizes the Perrons and possesses one of them. Amid tense games of hide and seek, disembodied claps from within closets, and vicious attempts to frighten the traumatized Peeron children, “The Conjuring” utilizes emotional stakes to drive its traditional narrative forward. The results are not unwelcome, as there is comfort in retreading familiar ground. Moreover, there’s much fun to be had when exaggerated scare tactics meet well-paced narrative choices that keep a haunting from feeling stale.

    1. Signs (2002)

To get the obvious out of the way: the plot of M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs” is, in fact, set in motion by someone’s death, albeit prior to the start of the film. The film follows the former priest Graham Hess (Mel Gibson), who recently lost his wife Colleen (Patricia Kalember) in a car accident, as he struggles with his faith while grieving with his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) and two children. This pervasive grief is exacerbated by reports of extraterrestrial sightings and crop circles appearing worldwide, including in the cornfields of Hess’s rural farm. I won’t spoil the beautiful, exhilarating ending to “Signs” in case you haven’t watched it yet, but the movie concludes on an immensely life-affirming note that allows Graham and his loved ones to process the void left behind by Colleen’s absence.

The only direct reference to death comes in the form of flashbacks to the accident that took Colleen’s life, but again, nobody actually dies in “Signs.” The film chooses to luxuriate in the tense, solemn atmosphere inside the isolated Hess farm, which is diluted from time to time due to the endearing levity that Merrill brings to the household. A secondary layer of turmoil is evoked by Graham’s tussle with faith, which slowly morphs into a misanthropic disdain for the notion of divine intervention. Although “Signs” literally bats for the beauty of human will and perseverance in the face of calamity, it also makes space for the fantastical, along with the validity of divinely ordained miracles.

Web3 vs. Traditional Gaming: Projected Market Growth and Future Trends

Web3 vs. Traditional Gaming: Projected Market Growth and Future Trends

The gaming industry is using blockchain to create decentralized and player-centric experiences. This is changing the traditional gaming model by introducing concepts like true ownership of in-game assets and play-to-earn models and new ways to engage and monetize.

    Market Size and Growth

The 2023 Web3 gaming market is projected to reach USD 23,926.0 million and is expected to grow to USD 53,228.2 million by 2033, with a CAGR of 18.7%.

Web3 gaming is driven by several factors. Firstly, the decentralization and ownership enabled by blockchain give players true control over in-game assets; they can trade, sell or use these assets across different platforms.

This is further amplified by the play to earn economy where players can earn real world value through gameplay, gaming is no longer just entertainment but a potential source of income.

Also, Web3 gaming enables interoperability and cross-platform support for a seamless experience across different platforms and increased accessibility and user engagement.

Community driven development also plays a big role, active player involvement in game development fosters loyalty and sense of ownership leading to more engaged communities.

Lastly the security and transparency of blockchain technology ensures the authenticity and scarcity of in-game items and builds trust among players and contributes to the growth of the market.

    Web3 Gaming Opportunities

Web3 gaming has many opportunities for developers and stakeholders. By selling in-game assets and services aligned with the play to earn, model developers can tap into new revenue streams. Emerging markets especially regions with growing interest in blockchain has a big potential to expand the Web3 gaming audience.

Blockchain enables unique gaming experiences that differentiate Web3 games from traditional games and innovative gameplay mechanics. Gaming companies, blockchain developers and crypto projects can collaborate and partner to drive innovation, increase market penetration and solidify Web3 gaming’s place in the industry.

    Web3 Gaming vs Traditional Gaming

Traditional gaming is still big, Web3 gaming is an adjacent market not a disruptor. Blockchain integration brings new experiences and monetization models that can coexist with traditional gaming and give players more choice.

Traditional console gaming, while offering great experiences, has its limitations. Players face high costs of hardware and games. In-game purchases don’t grant true ownership, players can’t resell or gift digital items. A study found that gamers will spend over £6,000 on virtual items in their lifetime, many are frustrated that they can’t resell these purchases.

In traditional gaming players invest heavily in virtual items and can’t get their money back. Average monthly in-game spend is £8.33, total annual spend is £96.40.

In contrast Web3 gaming offers financial returns as players can resell or trade in-game assets and make profit.

Recent events are shaping the future of Web3 gaming. Traditional gaming companies are entering Web3, the merge of traditional and decentralized gaming is happening. For example Ubisoft has entered the NFT space with “Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles” but the reception is mixed.

The regulatory landscape around cryptocurrency and blockchain is changing and developers and investors need to be agile. Technological advancements are solving previous limitations and making Web3 gaming more viable. But cryptocurrency fluctuations can impact the value of in-game assets and player investment and market stability.

    Final Thoughts

Web3 gaming will become significant, driven by innovation and player expectations. Balancing the interests of all stakeholders will be crucial. As this evolves, the convergence of traditional and decentralized gaming will define the future of gaming.

Bitcoin Dips to $93,000 With $400 Million in Longs Rekt. Where to From Here? – Decrypt

Bitcoin Dips to ,000 With 0 Million in Longs Rekt. Where to From Here? – Decrypt

Bitcoin witnessed a sharp sell-off on Monday, with the asset’s single-day performance giving up more than half of the gains made last week.

The world’s largest crypto fell 4.8% on the day to just above $93,000, with Monday’s drop totaling more than $4,800. For context, that’s more than 55% of last week’s $8,100 runup.

Still, analysts say the move is likely part of traders rebalancing their positions as they look to the end of the year, particularly in late December, which has proven to be a favorable month in the past.

“We see a combination of two catalysts pushing Bitcoin’s price down temporarily,” Ryan McMillin, chief investment officer at crypto fund manager Merkle Tree Capital, told Decrypt.

He pointed to a “sell wall” just below the “psychological barrier” right around $100,000, where traders are looking to capitalize on an explosive run following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory three weeks ago.

McMillin also pointed to a build-up of leveraged longs, or those betting on higher prices, as “too tempting” for market makers not to chase.

In other words, market makers who facilitate liquidity may intentionally drive prices down to trigger a liquidation of those leveraged longs.

Liquidations spiked on Monday to $550 million, 70% of which came from long positions. It follows a similar trend observed on Sunday. Still, McMillin says this is just part of normal market behavior.

“There isn’t much liquidity below $92,000, so that looks like the floor for this move,” McMillin said. “We expect the market to go and retest $100,000 before the week is out.”

Others agree, claiming Monday’s move is a part of typical market dynamics with traders hedging against potential downside risks, likely in response to recent moves.

“Pullbacks like these are not uncommon in bull markets,” Nick Forster, founder of DeFi derivatives protocol, Derive, told Decrypt. “We are seeing strong structural tailwinds for Bitcoin, bolstered by favorable conditions such as the interest-rate cutting cycle and evolving regulatory frameworks.”

Other cryptos in the top 10 by market capitalization have also dipped, with Dogecoin (DOGE) taking the most significant hit, down about 9.5% to $0.38, CoinGecko data shows.

The Acid & Steel supplement will be released as a hardcover book with over 200 pages of content, including new techniques, bestiaries, and tools for creating customized settings within these worlds. The book’s visual design includes black-and-white artwork from Kazuki David, reflecting the tone of the game.

Time Walker: Dark World Switch Review

        0
Time Walker: Dark World Switch Review

Time Walker: Dark World bills itself as a “roguelike auto-battler with strategic combat.” I’d say that’s accurate. Your have four heroes who you are free to modify how you see fit. You have a melee focused mage or a healing archer. The choice is largely yours. You start off by picking 4 base classes which you can upgrade your units into. You can also pick a contract, which effects the amount of soul tokens you get. You go through seventeen stages in a single world(the number of worlds depends on the difficulty level). You have normal stages of enemies. Elite stages have more powerful enemies. Treasure stages just give you skills. Stage 16/17 in a world is always a shop, where you can buy skills. Following that is always a boss battle.

At the end of every stage in Time Walker, you get one of 40 skills. These can range from healing to defense modifiers, to fire bolts. Any skill can be equipped on any character. You can also merge a few of the same skill with the same level(1,2,3) to make a more powerful skill. Three level ones turns into Level two. Three level twos turns into level three. Then two level threes turn into an ultra powerful EX skill. Now at the end of every run you get soul tokens. These can be used to buy upgrades in a series of panels. Buying the requisite number of upgrades unlocks the next panel. Most upgrades center around new classes and modifying those classes.

        Get grinding!

I liked Time Walker, but wouldn’t give it a Must Play due to disappointing technical issues, like a crash at one point. Also, there are things like, one time I put taunt on a character and enemies targeted everyone else except the one with taunt. A little more QA and polish would go a long way to solidifying the title. But still I give this a very solid Recommended with an eight back-end score. There is tons of strategic depth in Time Walker and plenty of things I did not go into. The complexity draws you in and simply won’t let you go. Get grinding those soul tokens!

Overall: Time Walker: Dark World need just a little more polish, but as it stands, its an excellent auto-battler with tons of depth.

        Verdict: Recommended

Bold and the Beautiful: Steffy Hangs Finn Out to Dry as Her Plan Unravels?

          0
Bold and the Beautiful: Steffy Hangs Finn Out to Dry as Her Plan Unravels?

Bold and the Beautiful has Steffy Forrester changing her tune, which will open Finn‘s eyes this week on the CBS soap. She finds out who her lingerie-clad stepsister waited for when she stumbled into John Finnegan on the CBS soap.

Brooke Logan finally told Ridge Forrester the name of the man who floats Hope Logan’s boat today, Carter Walton. So, it shouldn’t take long for the news to get to Steffy and clear up the Finn mess.

But Steffy is unlikely to swallow her pride and admit she was wrong. So, she may turn on Finn, who fed her everything she wanted to hear when accusing her rival of trying to seduce him. So, with this control thing she’s got going on, she may put this mistake back on Finn.

Bold and the Beautiful: Steffy Forrester Pulls Finn’s Strings

Bold and the Beautiful has Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) under a false sense of security these days. She thinks she has Hope Logan (Annika Noelle) gone for good after she attempted to seduce her husband.

Finn played a big part in Steffy’s ploy. John Finnegan (Tanner Novlan) echoed Steffy’s words back to her, as she made a case out of her rival stumbling into Finn at FC while wearing lingerie.

Bold and the Beautiful Spoilers: Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) - John Finnegan - Finn (Tanner Novlan)
          B&B | CBS

While Steffy’s accusation includes Hope waiting for Finn in her flimsy attire, something is wrong with that picture. Steffy Forrester had no idea Finn was coming into FC to drop off the tablet she left at home.

So, how could her rival have any idea Finn would be coming through the door when no one else knew?  Steffy Forrester has to realize this, but if she admitted it, her plan of pushing her stepsister out of FC would not have worked.

          B&B: Steffy Remains Ruthless…

Bold and the Beautiful turned Steffy Forrester into a ruthless co-CEO a while back, and as time goes by she’s just getting worse. She ignored her grandfather, who owns FC. When Eric Forrester (John McCook) questioned her firing of the Logan daughter, she shut him down.

She’s remained adamant that Hope Logan is banished from FC and even her father, Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) couldn’t change her mind. But, through it all, Finn echoed all the right things, so she had a backup for this.

Finn won’t even take a minute to think of another possibility. His stance never sways. He continues to say he was attacked by a lingerie-clad Hope Logan, who wanted to lure him away from his wife. But is this just a survival tactic for him? He’s seen what happens when his wife doesn’t get her way. He almost lost his marriage when he went against her while trying to get to know his birth mother, Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown)

Bold and the Beautiful: How Far Will Steffy Go?

Bold and the Beautiful had Brooke Logan (Katherine Kelly Lang) spill the beans about her daughter’s latest love interest. She told Ridge, it was Carter Walton (Lawrence Saint-Victor) and not Finn, who a risque-dressed Hope expected that day.

So, it looks like Steffy Forrester soon finds herself proven wrong. But this controlling mode that Bold and Beautiful scripted for her these days will likely not allow her to admit she was wrong.

With Carter and Hope now holding the documents making Carter the boss, Ridge and Eric may point out to Steffy this is the result of her conniving deeds. But, will she throw Finn under the bus, saying she was only going by what he said happened?

Some Bold and the Beautiful fans see John Finnegan as “spineless” these days. They suggest he allows his wife to control him. So, when she finds out she was wrong about her rival going after her husband in this latest incident, she may put it back on Finn to save face.

This could be the event that opens Finn’s eyes. So, Steffy Forrester may not only see problems at work over her ousting her stepsister but problems in her marriage as well on the CBS soap.

Head back to Soap Dirt for the latest Bold and the Beautiful spoilers.

StreamGuy and the Truman Show Effect: A New Chapter for Blockchain and Reality Entertainment | NFT CULTURE | NFT News | Web3 Culture | NFTs & Crypto Art

As blockchain technology continues to disrupt industries, StreamGuy and the live-streaming meta on PumpFun are shaping up to be one of the most fascinating—and chaotic—use cases to date. At its core, StreamGuy’s mission is straightforward: pump his $LIVE token to a $100 million market cap through livestreamed antics. But as the spectacle unfolds, it’s becoming clear that this is about more than just financial gains. It’s a case study in the merging of reality TV, decentralized technology, and digital culture.

StreamGuy as the Truman Show 2.0

StreamGuy’s journey mirrors the premise of The Truman Show, where viewers tuned in daily to witness the unfiltered life of one man. However, unlike Truman, who was unaware of his audience, StreamGuy is acutely aware—and is leveraging that attention to fuel his token. It’s reality TV for the blockchain generation, with a twist: viewers aren’t just passive spectators; they’re stakeholders in the outcome.

          Novel Blockchain Use Cases Highlighted

Tokenized Reality TV: By tying a live-streamer’s success directly to a blockchain token, StreamGuy has created a new model for monetizing attention. Every wild stunt translates into token activity, creating a feedback loop where viewers, fans, and investors are equally invested in the narrative.
Gamification of Spectatorship: In the StreamGuy meta, watching isn’t just entertainment—it’s participation. The more viewers engage, the more value they can drive to $LIVE, blurring the lines between audience and influencer.
Decentralized Funding Models: Instead of relying on traditional sponsors or ad revenue, StreamGuy’s project is entirely funded and governed by his audience through blockchain.

The $100M Market Cap Dream That Slips Further Away

Despite the innovation, StreamGuy’s journey is veering off course. The lofty goal of hitting a $100 million market cap seems increasingly unlikely as attention fragments and the antics lose their novelty. But the true legacy of StreamGuy might not be in hitting that number—it’s in proving what’s possible.

Like the earliest reality TV pioneers, StreamGuy will likely go down as an innovator who laid the groundwork for future creators. Even if his token doesn’t reach the moon, his influence on how blockchain can power new entertainment ecosystems is undeniable.

A Blueprint for the Future of Blockchain Entertainment

StreamGuy’s experiment might fail financially, but the conceptual breakthroughs will resonate:

The Convergence of Creator Economies and Blockchain: His model shows how creators can bypass traditional platforms, building a direct economic relationship with their audience.
Decentralized Reality Shows: Imagine a world where reality TV stars tokenize their lives, offering fans the ability to shape the narrative—or profit from the journey.
Hyper-Personalized Content: StreamGuy demonstrates the potential for a one-to-one economy where influencers and fans share financial incentives.

          From Spectacle to Legacy

While StreamGuy may never achieve the $100 million market cap dream, he will be remembered as one of the earliest blockchain entertainers to push the boundaries of what’s possible. His antics—ridiculous as they may be—have introduced a new way to think about live streaming, audience engagement, and creator monetization. Future creators will likely refine and perfect his model, building on the foundation he’s set.

          The Takeaway

StreamGuy represents a glimpse into the future of blockchain-powered entertainment. Like The Truman Show or the dawn of reality TV, his journey is a moment of experimentation and transformation. Whether or not his token reaches its financial goals, he’s already succeeded in pioneering a novel, if not chaotic, use case for blockchain. As history shows, being first often matters more than being the biggest.
