In the “The Simpsons” episode “Alone Again, Natura-Diddly” (February 13, 2000), the Simpsons discover a new outdoor auto racing track inside their favorite nature preserve and decide to stay and watch a race or two. Indeed, many recognizable characters are there, including Ned Flanders (Harry Shearer) and his wife Maude (Marcia Mitzman Gaven), who sit in the back row. In between races, cheerleaders take to the track and use a t-shirt cannon to fire free clothing into the stands. Tragically, one of the errant t-shirts strikes Maude in the chest, throwing her over the back railing of the stadium. She plunges to her death, landing in the parking lot below.
The rest of the episode follows Ned’s grieving process as he mourns the loss of his wife. Ned, perhaps shockingly, even finds his faith in God shaken over the tragedy; ordinarily, Ned is ultra-Christian.
Maude Flanders is one of the few characters that “The Simpsons” actually, permanently killed off. The other was the jazz musician “Bleeding Gums” Murphy, who has only returned in flashbacks, or, occasionally, as a ghost. Dr. Marvin Monroe also died, and his gravestone was even seen in “Alone Again, Natura-Diddly,” but the character mysteriously returned years later. “I’ve been very sick,” was all he had to offer.
Maude, however, was an important enough character to change the thrust of the one of “The Simpsons” more notable characters. Ned Flanders, previously happily married with a family, now had to cope with being a widower. The happy-go-lucky character was now infused with an element of tragedy.
It turns out, though, that the writers killed Maude Flanders for reasons beyond mere storytelling opportunities or Ned’s character alteration. It seems that the actress who played Maude, Maggie Roswell, asked for a raise. When she didn’t get it, Roswell quit. In response, the “Simpsons” writers simply offed the character. The pay dispute was reported by CBR.

Melinda Gates Called The Split The ‘Lowest Moment’ In Her Life
MEGA
Bill and Melinda tied the knot in 1994 and share three children: Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22. The couple announced their divorce in May 2021 but had been living separately for a year before going public with the news.
In a 2022 interview with USA Today, Melinda, now 60, revealed that it was a “sad day” for her when she realized she was done with her marriage to the billionaire.
While she described the decision to separate as the “healthier choice” for both of them, Melinda also called it the “lowest moment” in her life.
“That wasn’t something I ever thought would happen to me,” she said. “It certainly wasn’t what I thought on the day I got married, but I realized for myself, I needed to make a healthier choice, and that was just a very, very sad day.”

In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, Melinda also pointed to Bill’s association with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein as a contributing factor to the breakdown of their marriage.
According to Page Six, she said: “I did not like that he had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein. no. I made that clear to him.” Melinda added, “He was abhorrent. He was evil personified.”
Bill has since described his professional ties with Epstein, who died by suicide in jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, as a “mistake.”
Following their split, Bill and Melinda have moved on in their personal lives. In October 2024, Melinda went public with her relationship with entrepreneur Philip Vaughn.
The two were spotted holding hands while heading to dinner at Le Bernardin in New York City. Bill, meanwhile, has been in a relationship with Paula Hurd, the widow of Oracle CEO Mark Hurd, since 2023.

Bill Gates Praises ‘Intriguing’ Dinner With Donald Trump
MEGA
Bill recently shared details about a rare private dinner with President Donald Trump, describing the nearly three-hour meeting as “intriguing” and leaving him “impressed.”
Despite having supported Trump’s opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, in the 2024 election, Gates appeared optimistic after their conversation.
“I had a chance, about two weeks ago, to go have a long and actually quite intriguing dinner with him,” Bill told The Wall Street Journal.
During the wide-ranging discussion, he said they focused heavily on public health, an area central to his philanthropic efforts.
“I felt like he was energized and looking forward to helping to drive innovation,” Bill noted. “I was frankly impressed with how well he showed a lot of interest in the issues I brought up.”
Let us help you enter the exciting world of AI for Fashion Design. It’s just a tool after all.
Just like a ruler, hip curve and a pencil helps in drafting patterns. And muslin, scissors and a dress form assists in the draping, you can now use AI to help you in the design process. Who doesn’t want another tool in their tool kit?
UoF’s newest lesson, AI: Getting Started with Prompts by Anna Leighton (Image credit: UniversityofFashion.com)
So, what’s a Prompt?
Simply put, it’s a tool. Imagine that you are giving directions to your pattern maker. You’re telling her/him/them, “I am looking to create a dress pattern for a size 8 with the following specifications: a sleeveless knee-length sheath silhouette made out of linen, with a scooped neck, embroidery around the neckline and armhole and a back zipper’. Well, in AI language, that is called a prompt.
In our second lesson, AI: Getting Started with Prompts, Anna Leighton demos how to craft powerful prompts that turn AI from a tool into your creative partner. A great prompt is more than just a description. It’s like a recipe where every word adds richness, detail and depth to your design, ultimately transforming your vision into a stunning reality. In this lesson, you learn how to construct a fashion image from the ground up by carefully describing each design detail, setting the perfect angle, choosing ideal lighting and much more. Focusing on prompting will help you create a captivating image and story with your unique perspective and vision.
You will be able to use these tools to create mood boards and to iterate on ideas. Anna will teach you how!

Xbox is on the path to becoming the world’s biggest publisher, and it seems like Phil Spencer is currently doing the PR rounds. The result has been a few snippets of interesting info, like the fact that Microsoft plans on bringing games to the Switch 2.
Now in another interview hosted by Destin Legarie on his Patreon page, Spencer was asked if he could confirm Starfield would remain an exclusive. He shared a clip of Spencer’s response on his X page.
Phil Spencer on Starfield exclusivity
Destin: “Can you solidify that Starfield is staying put for the time being?”
“No. Like there is no specific game, that I would … That kinda goes back to my red line answer. Like, there is no reason for me to put a ring-fence around any game and say this game will not go to a place that it would find players, where it would have business success for us. What we find is we’re able to drive a better business that allows us to invest in great game line-up like you saw. And that’s our strategy, right. Our strategy is allow our games to be available. Game Pass is an important component to playing the games on our platform. But to keep games off of other platforms, we don’t think is the path that we’re gonna .. That’s not a path for us. It doesn’t work for us.”
It’s further confirmation of what the community has known since early 2024, but what Microsoft has been seemingly unwilling to say with complete certainty. Instead, Xbox has remained slightly vague with its wording, constantly hinting at more games coming to other platforms without every just coming out and saying “Yes, we are now publishing our games on PlayStation, Switch and PC.”
But it seems finally Xbox are solidifying their stance and being clearer that their games will be coming to platforms other than Xbox.
Chinese AI researchers have achieved what many thought was light years away: A free, open-source AI model that can match or exceed the performance of OpenAI’s most advanced reasoning systems. What makes this even more remarkable was how they did it: by letting the AI teach itself through trial and error, similar to how humans learn.
“DeepSeek-R1-Zero, a model trained via large-scale reinforcement learning (RL) without supervised fine-tuning (SFT) as a preliminary step, demonstrates remarkable reasoning capabilities.” the research paper reads.
“Reinforcement learning” is a method in which a model is rewarded for making good decisions and punished for making bad ones, without knowing which one is which. After a series of decisions, it learns to follow a path that was reinforced by those results.
Initially, during the supervised fine-tuning phase, a group of humans tells the model the desired output they want, giving it context to know what’s good and what isn’t. This leads to the next phase, Reinforcement Learning, in which a model provides different outputs and humans rank the best ones. The process is repeated over and over until the model knows how to consistently provide satisfactory results.
Image: Deepseek
DeepSeek R1 is a steer in AI development because humans have a minimum part in the training. Unlike other models that are trained on vast amounts of supervised data, DeepSeek R1 learns primarily through mechanical reinforcement learning—essentially figuring things out by experimenting and getting feedback on what works.
“Through RL, DeepSeek-R1-Zero naturally emerges with numerous powerful and interesting reasoning behaviors,” the researchers said in their paper. The model even developed sophisticated capabilities like self-verification and reflection without being explicitly programmed to do so.
As the model went through its training process, it naturally learned to allocate more “thinking time” to complex problems and developed the ability to catch its own mistakes. The researchers highlighted an “a-ha moment” where the model learned to reevaluate its initial approaches to problems—something it wasn’t explicitly programmed to do.
The performance numbers are impressive. On the AIME 2024 mathematics benchmark, DeepSeek R1 achieved a 79.8% success rate, surpassing OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model. On standardized coding tests, it demonstrated “expert level” performance, achieving a 2,029 Elo rating on Codeforces and outperforming 96.3% of human competitors.
Image: Deepseek
But what really sets DeepSeek R1 apart is its cost—or lack thereof. The model runs queries at just $0.14 per million tokens compared to OpenAI’s $7.50, making it 98% cheaper. And unlike proprietary models, DeepSeek R1’s code and training methods are completely open source under the MIT license, meaning anyone can grab the model, use it and modify it without restrictions.

AI leaders react
The release of DeepSeek R1 has triggered an avalanche of responses from AI industry leaders, with many highlighting the significance of a fully open-source model matching proprietary leaders in reasoning capabilities.
Nvidia’s top researcher Dr. Jim Fan delivered perhaps the most pointed commentary, drawing a direct parallel to OpenAI’s original mission. “We are living in a timeline where a non-U.S. company is keeping the original mission of OpenAI alive—truly open frontier research that empowers all,” Fan noted, praising DeepSeek’s unprecedented transparency.
We are living in a timeline where a non-US company is keeping the original mission of OpenAI alive – truly open, frontier research that empowers all. It makes no sense. The most entertaining outcome is the most likely.

— Jim Fan (@DrJimFan) January 20, 2025
Fan called out the significance of DeepSeek’s reinforcement learning approach: “They are perhaps the first [open source software] project that shows major sustained growth of [a reinforcement learning] flywheel. He also lauded DeepSeek’s straightforward sharing of “raw algorithms and matplotlib learning curves” versus the hype-driven announcements more common in the industry.
Apple researcher Awni Hannun mentioned that people can run a quantized version of the model locally on their Macs.

Traditionally, Apple devices have been weak at AI due to their lack of compatibility with Nvidia’s CUDA software, but that appears to be changing. For example, AI researcher Alex Cheema was capable of running the full model after harnessing the power of 8 Apple Mac Mini units running together—which is still cheaper than the servers required to run the most powerful AI models currently available.
That said, users can run lighter versions of DeepSeek R1 on their Macs with good levels of accuracy and efficiency.
However, the most interesting reactions came after pondering how close the open source industry is to the proprietary models, and the potential impact this development may have for OpenAI as the leader in the field of reasoning AI models.
Stability AI’s founder Emad Mostaque took a provocative stance, suggesting the release puts pressure on better-funded competitors: “Can you imagine being a frontier lab that’s raised like a billion dollars and now you can’t release your latest model because it can’t beat DeepSeek?”
Can you imagine being a “frontier” lab that’s raised like a billion dollars and now you can’t release your latest model because it can’t beat deepseek? 🐳
Sota can be a bitch if thats your target
— Emad (@EMostaque) January 20, 2025
Following the same reasoning but with a more serious argumentation, tech entrepreneur Arnaud Bertrand explained that the emergence of a competitive open source model may be potentially harmful to OpenAI, since that makes its models less attractive to power users who might otherwise be willing to spend a lot of money per task.
“It’s essentially as if someone had released a mobile on par with the iPhone, but was selling it for $30 instead of $1000. It’s this dramatic.”
Most people probably don’t realize how bad news China’s Deepseek is for OpenAI.
They’ve come up with a model that matches and even exceeds OpenAI’s latest model o1 on various benchmarks, and they’re charging just 3% of the price.

— Arnaud Bertrand (@RnaudBertrand) January 21, 2025
Perplexity AI’s CEO Arvind Srinivas framed the release in terms of its market impact: “DeepSeek has largely replicated o1 mini and has open-sourced it.” In a follow-up observation, he noted the rapid pace of progress: “It’s kind of wild to see reasoning get commoditized this fast.”
It’s kinda wild to see reasoning get commoditized this fast. We should fully expect an o3 level model that’s open-sourced by the end of the year, probably even mid-year. pic.twitter.com/oyIXkS4uDM
— Aravind Srinivas (@AravSrinivas) January 20, 2025
Srinivas said his team will work to bring DeepSeek R1’s reasoning capabilities to Perplexity Pro in the future.
Quick hands-on
We did a few quick tests to compare the model against OpenAI o1, starting with a well-known question for these kinds of benchmarks: “How many Rs are in the word Strawberry?”
Typically, models struggle to provide the correct answer because they don’t work with words—they work with tokens, digital representations of concepts.
GPT-4o failed, OpenAI o1 succeeded—and so did DeepSeek R1.
However, o1 was very concise in the reasoning process, whereas DeepSeek applied a heavy reasoning output. Interestingly enough, DeepSeek’s answer felt more human. During the reasoning process, the model appeared to talk to itself, using slang and words that are uncommon on machines but more widely used by humans.
For example, while reflecting on the number of Rs, the model said to itself, “Okay, let me figure (this) out.” It also used “Hmmm,” while debating, and even said things like “Wait, no. Wait, let’s break it down.”
The model eventually reached the correct results, but spent a lot of time reasoning and spitting tokens. Under typical pricing conditions, this would be a disadvantage; but given the current state of things, it can output way more tokens than OpenAI o1 and still be competitive.
Another test to see how good the models were at reasoning was to play “spies” and identify the perpetrators in a short story. We choose a sample from the BIG-bench dataset on Github. (The full story is available here and involves a school trip to a remote, snowy location, where students and teachers face a series of strange disappearances and the model must find out who was the stalker.)
Both models thought about it for over one minute. However, ChatGPT crashed before solving the mystery:
But DeepSeek gave the correct answer after “thinking” about it for 106 seconds. The thought process was correct, and the model was even capable of correcting itself after arriving at incorrect (but still logical enough) conclusions.
The accessibility of smaller versions particularly impressed researchers. For context, a 1.5B model is so small, you could theoretically run it locally on a powerful smartphone. And even a quantized version of Deepseek R1 that small was able to stand face-to-face against GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet, according to Hugging Face’s data scientist Vaibhav Srivastav.
“DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B outperforms GPT-4o and Claude-3.5-Sonnet on math benchmarks with 28.9% on AIME and 83.9% on MATH.”
1.5B did WHAT? pic.twitter.com/Pk6fOJNma2
— Vaibhav (VB) Srivastav (@reach_vb) January 20, 2025
Just a week ago, UC Berkeley’s SkyNove released Sky T1, a reasoning model also capable of competing against OpenAI o1 preview.
Those interested in running the model locally can download it from Github or Huggingf Face. Users can download it, run it, remove the censorship, or adapt it to different areas of expertise by fine-tuning it.
Or if you want to try the model online, go to Hugging Chat or DeepSeek’s Web Portal, which is a good alternative to ChatGPT—especially since it’s free, open source, and the only AI chatbot interface with a model built for reasoning besides ChatGPT.

Comedian and TV star Mel Giedroyc was unveiled as Teeth during tonight’s (January 25) episode of The Masked Singer.
The former Bake Off host week by week had viewers stumped, with many confused about what gender they could be. Popular guesses for Teeth over the weeks have included Alan Carr, Harry Hill, Sue Pollard, and Jeff Buckley, to name a few.
Even the panel of judges — Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, Jonathan Ross, and newbie Maya Jama — were left guessing until the very end.
During their time on the show, viewers were unsure of Teeth’s gender (Credit: ITV)
Masked Singer: Mel Giedroyc unveiled as Teeth
During tonight’s episode, Teeth found themselves in the bottom two alongside Bear after receiving the least amount of votes from the studio audience.
It was down to the panel to decide who they wanted to see return next weekend. Despite being their second time in the bottom two, they decided to save Bear once again.
As a result, Teeth was eliminated from the competition. With the panel guessing a range of celebs from Fearne Cotton to Sue Pollard, they failed to identify Teeth as Mel, who has been a popular guess during previous series.
Fans didn’t expect Mel Giedroyc to be Teeth (Credit: ITV)
‘Absolutely kicking myself’
Just like Davina, Maya, Jonathan, and Mo, viewers at home were also surprised to see Mel as Teeth.
“Teeth ? I would never have guessed #maskedsingeruk,” one user wrote on X.
“Absolutely gobsmacked at who teeth turned out to be!!!” another person shared.
“Omg Mel Giedroyc, wouldn’t have had a clue,” a third remarked.
“NO WAY HOW DID I NOT GET MEL GIEDROYC? Absolutely kicking myself,” a fourth viewer said.
“Well i would never have guessed! Great one!” a fifth shared.
“Ok I would have never guess that,” a sixth user wrote.
‘I didn’t think I’d get this far’
In her first unmasked interview, Mel revealed that she feels “really elated” about her time on the show.
When asked if The Masked Singer is a “career highlight”, she said: “Listen, if you told me you’re going to have a chance to sing the Neighbours theme tune dressed as an enormous pair of wind up teeth with pink tights and big pink flapping feet, I would say I could stop my career now. For me that is the pinnacle!”
Mel shared that she didn’t tell her co-star and series two contestant Sue Perkins that she was taking part in the show, insisting that she won’t be annoyed because “she never told me”.
She added: “So right back at ya girlfriend.”
The only person who knew Mel had signed up for the show was her husband, who she said took it “really seriously”.
As for being unmasked halfway through the series, she explained: “I just feel it’s a win-win. I didn’t think I’d get this far, I think I’ve got over halfway which is great! It’s been so fun.”
The Masked Singer returns next Saturday (February 1) at 7pm on ITV1, ITVX, STV & STV Player.

Snail clues
In some of their clue packages so far, Snail has said they are “more worldly than you think”.
She “might not be speedy”, but that won’t stop her from making her mark “at home and further afield”. Snail also hinted they’ve got “scandalous secrets” up their sleeve.
“I can look rather fancy here standing in lace, but sometimes in my mind, it can be up in space,” they once expressed.
With the clues pointing viewers in various directions, some of them directly add up to Andrea.
In their first VT, Snail referenced The Corrs’ single Irresistible and also had a “Welcome Home” sign on their costume, which is the name of the Irish documentary she featured in.
A baby was also shown. While the 50-year-old musician is a mother to two children, Andrea is also the youngest member of her chart-topping band.
Last weekend, Snail was seen unpacking an umbrella from a package. In 2011, Andrea released a single titled Tinseltown in the Rain.
White angel wings were also shown, which could be a link to The Corrs’ 2004 album Borrowed Heaven, which also featured the single Angel.
Snail also referred to themselves as someone who was “full of dreams”. The Corrs famously covered Fleetwood Mac’s hit Dreams in the 90s.
A photo frame of Duncan James was on display tonight, who was in the boy band Blue. The Corrs released an album titled In Blue.

The Duo Umbrella
You’ll have to thank the TV show “Shark Tank” and the entrepreneurs brave enough to present the idea there for this one. The Duo is a Dual Handle Umbrella (essentially a normal umbrella with an extendable arm so that a second person can hold it). Yes, the umbrella itself is wide enough to cover them both. Brilliant! Made from recycled polyester, it opens in a cinch, closes just as easily and comes in three colors.
