    You might think AI is coming for developers’ jobs—after all, AWS CEO Matt Garman predicted most developers won’t be coding within two years, and former Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque gives programmers just five years.

    But GitHub’s latest data tells a strikingly different story.

    According to a recent report, developer activity hit unprecedented levels in 2024. Total projects on GitHub grew 25% year-over-year to 518 million, while contributions reached 5.2 billion.

    More than one million open-source maintainers, students, and teachers now use GitHub Copilot at no cost.

    “Our data also shows a lot more people are joining the global developer community,” Github’s report reads. “In the past year, more developers joined GitHub and engaged with open-source and public projects (in some cases, empowered by AI),”

    The advent of AI is accelerating, not replacing, development, at least not right now.

    The report shows developers created over 70,000 new generative AI projects in 2024, a 98% year-over-year increase. Public generative AI projects like home-assistant/core and Ollama (generative text) are drawing significant contributions, especially from newcomers.

    This shift toward open-source AI development, rather than closed proprietary systems, is also critical to the evolution of AI technology.

    The trend shows that AI development is becoming more transparent and collaborative rather than concentrated in a few large companies. This matters because open-source AI projects allow for public scrutiny of models, enable faster innovation through community contributions, and democratize access to AI technology—particularly crucial for developers in emerging markets who might otherwise be priced out of working with cutting-edge AI tools.

    Python’s rise to the top spot over JavaScript marks a historic shift—the first such change since 2014.

    This may not mean a lot by itself, but Python has gained significant traction, especially in fields like data science and machine learning. In contrast, Javascript is essential in areas like web development, so an increase in usage to the point of becoming the most popular language, may point to developers finding AI more profitable or attractive than working on web projects.

    Notably, Jupyter Notebooks—open-source computing environments for users to run AI models and other programs—also increased in popularity this year.

    The transformation is global. India’s developer community is snowballing, and it’s projected to overtake the U.S. as the largest on GitHub by 2028. Notable growth occurred in regions outside North America and Europe, with Brazil, India, and Nigeria showing particularly strong momentum.

    India saw a 95% increase in year-over-year contributions to generative AI projects, while France experienced a 70% boost. Emerging tech hubs like the Netherlands (291%), Ethiopia (242%), and Costa Rica (171%) showed major growth in AI project contributions.

    But, if the report shows an exciting outlook, why are developers and other tech workers still wary about this technology?

    The rapid adoption of AI, highlighted by McKinsey’s latest global study reporting a 72% AI adoption rate, may help understand the mixed feelings in the tech community.

    Developers are concerned about being edged out by tools that simplify coding and automate repetitive tasks, and seeing how AI projects like those on GitHub’s platform grow; it’s easy to understand how fears of role displacement simmer beneath the excitement.

    Elon Musk is also aware of these concerns, predicting an existential “crisis of meaning” as AI becomes capable of performing human jobs “better” than humans.

    Speaking at the 2024 All-In Summit, Musk underscored a future where traditional roles may disappear, pushing humanity to redefine purpose in a world where tasks can be performed by AI.

    Workers across industries are taking proactive steps to protect themselves as AI reshapes job roles. Many are turning to unions and collective bargaining to ensure safeguards are in place, as seen in the entertainment industry, where unions like SAG-AFTRA have pushed back against unchecked AI use in creative fields.

    There’s also a surge in demand for “AI literacy” training programs, which aim to help workers across sectors understand and work alongside AI tools rather than be replaced by them.

    While concerns are valid—the World Economic Forum estimates that AI will wipe 85 million jobs out of existence—GitHub’s data suggests that the dystopian AI-powered future is not upon us yet, and instead of replacing developers, AI appears to be empowering them to shape the future of tech on their own terms.

    Boba Fett suspended from Star Wars: Unlimited, likely a first for the TCG


    The Star Wars: Unlimited card Boba Fett (Collecting the Bounty) is now suspended from play in the Premier format. The announcement of the change was made by lead designer Danny Schaefer in a blog post published Wednesday. He also called the card “a development mistake.” While Boba Fett is not being banned outright, it will have limited utility starting Nov. 8.

    “If we knew back then what we know now,” Schefer said, “we never would have let him go to print with that combination of abilities, stats, and deploy cost.”

    According to Schaefer, the Boba Fett card in question — a leader card — was included in the decks of 55% of winners in a recent competitive tournament. For a game with 54 different leader cards at time of publication, that represents a significant design issue. Schaefer writes that the decision to suspend the card was not taken lightly, but was preferred to alternate methods, including an outright ban or retirement, as is common in competitor Flesh and Blood.

    “He is the most severe power level outlier and his power level issues are exacerbated because he’s a leader,” Schaefer writes. And he’s correct: Every time players sit down at the table, they have their choice of leaders, which begin every game in play on the table. Leaders also set the tone for the entire rest of the deck

    “Leaders carry special weight in this game because they define archetypes, because you have guaranteed access to them in every game, and because a deck can only ever have one leader,” he writes. “Boba Fett’s combination of stats and ability have proven to be too far ahead [preventing] other midrange leaders […] from being viable in the metagame. Regardless of what specific card choices in these decks shift from set to set, it would likely remain optimal to have the Boba Fett leader at the helm.”

    Star Wars: Unlimited launched in March 2024 to near universal critical acclaim. Reviewers, including here at Polygon, lauded developers at Fantasy Flight Games for the TCG’s fast and powerful gameplay. Mashing up a beloved IP with a novel two-lane style of combat, with ground and space forces segregated to separate sides of the battlefield, remains a winning combination.

    Schaefer left the door open for Boba Fett (Collecting the Bounty) to return from suspension at a later date.

      Billy hallucinated Paul in tonight’s Coronation Street (Wednesday, November 6), as he risked freezing to death outside of the factory.

      After listening to old voice messages from Paul, Billy’s phone battery started to drain as he sobbed outside of the factory in a drunken state.

      As Billy starts to hallucinate his late husband, here’s all we know about whether we’ll see Paul on screen again.

      Coronation Street: Paul Foreman’s ‘return’

      This evening, Bernie gathered Paul’s loved ones in the Rovers to watch the video of Paul’s ashes being sent up into space.

      Billy got angry whilst in a drunken state, thinking that the whole event was tacky. He then pulled out the lead to the laptop and ruined the video for everyone before announcing that he tried to kiss Todd on the day of Paul’s funeral.

      Burning bridges with Paul’s family, Billy then headed off into the night as he listened to old voice messages from Paul behind the factory.

      Starting to freeze, Billy then started to hallucinate Paul as Peter Ash’s character returned to our screens in a surprise twist.

      The episode ended with Paul standing over Billy, telling him to ‘get up’ or he’d freeze to death.

      Viewers will know that Paul sadly passed away from MND at the start of September this year. Billy sadly didn’t make it to the hospital in time to say a final goodbye though.

      Now, Billy’s not coping with Paul’s death well at all. Finding out that Paul had already passed when he made a final phone call to him, Billy’s also had to deal with his half of Paul’s ashes being stolen by a guy called Wayne.

      Drunk, Billy hallucinated Paul tonight. But, this won’t be the last we’ll see of him.

      Paul will ‘return’ in hallucination form once again in Friday’s episode (November 8), as reported by Digital Spy.

      Peter Ash’s return as Paul was kept out of spoilers to surprise fans. But, will Paul’s ‘presence’ help Billy before it’s too late?

        “Arcane” is one of the all-time greatest animated shows, a stunning piece of animation and a truly epic video game adaptation. Just like “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has pushed the medium forward on the feature side, so has “Arcane” challenged what was possible in TV animation, all while being one of the best video game adaptations ever made.

        Based on the uber-popular gaming phenomenon “League of Legends,” the show portrays the origin story of several characters from the game while focusing on the story of Vi and Jinx, two sisters caught on opposite sides of a conflict between the utopian Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun. The first season of “Arcane” was an immediate success. It became the highest-rated Netflix series at the time of its release, ganering critical acclaim and going on to become the first streaming show to win the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (while also winning three other Emmy awards).

        Despite all of this, “Arcane” is coming to an end after just two seasons. The news has left fans dumbfounded, wondering why such a popular show would end so quickly. After all, the first season felt like just the start of a much larger universe, a franchise that could bring the many stories and characters from “League of Legends” to life. (The game has a vast lore and features dozens of characters with unique backstories.)

        According to Variety, “Arcane” was originally planned and budgeted for a five-season arc, but now parent company and “League of Legends” developer Riot Games has stalled its entertainment output. What’s more, Variety reports that the 18 episodes of the two seasons of “Arcane” will have cost the studio $250 million to produce and promote, making it by far the most expensive animated series ever developed.

        Arcane is the most expensive animated show ever

        It’s no secret that “Arcane” had the budget of an animated feature — the show spent six years in production, most of which were devoted to development (which is a rare luxury in modern animation) — but this is a ludicrous amount. What’s more, sources familiar with the production report that Riot Games spent $60 million of its own money to promote the first season of “Arcane,” which Variety notes is far more than what Netflix itself spent on the show. Granted, this contributed to the series becoming a huge hit everyone on the planet was talking about, but given Riot Games already had a gaming landscape of several games with millions of users that could serve as free advertisement, this feels excessive.

        It’s part of what the report by Variety paints as a very painful and extremely costly set of inexperienced woes for the gaming giant as it tried to become an entertainment company, too. Shortly before the release of the first season of “Arcane,” then-CEO of Riot Games, Nicolo Laurent, pledged that he was going to turn the company into the “entertainment company of the 21st century” (via FastCompany). But despite attempts at expanding into movies and TV, only “Arcane” has come out of that attempt, and as Variety’s report notes, there isn’t really anything else close to actually getting made. “While various writers have come and gone, not a single script ordered got anywhere near a greenlight for so much as a pilot or was even far enough along to have any directors or stars attached,” the report states.

        What’s worse, by 2023, Laurent left the company. According to Variety, in his absence, the entertainment division of Riot Games was essentially disbanded.

        As for “Arcane,” it may surprise you (not really) to know that the exorbitant budget will not translate into big profits (or any profits at all). Riot gets $3 million per episode in licensing fees from Netflix (including $3 million per episode in China from Tencent), but even with skin sales and merchandise (which weren’t available when season 1 came out) that may not be enough to break even.

        The second and final season of “Arcane” releases its first three episodes on Netflix November 9, 2024, followed by another three episodes on November 16 and the final three episodes on November 23.

        3. The amikaverse

        Haircare brand, amika, launched the amikaverse as an extension of the brand’s purpose, embodying their commitment to inclusion, responsibility and sustainability. The beauty brand also highlighted self-expression in the experience, featuring exclusive digital wearables from vibrant hairstyles to a hair dryer jetpack. Amika even held a digital sweepstakes offering users the chance to receive a limited-edition, vibrant jacket inspired by the brand’s iconic packaging. 

        Upon entering, visitors are greeted with a Bestie to help them navigate the immersive, play-driven world—each leading to a different section of the experience corresponding to their character: Stylist, Gardener and Recycler. Stylists guide players to the Salon, where they could hone in on their hair expertise and address the diverse set of hair concerns presented by various NPCs. With Gardener besties, users venture to the Garden where they grow and harvest ingredients of different amika products. The Recycler path highlights the brand’s commitment to sustainability, empowering players to explore the amikaverse and collect materials to combine into packaging. Once users have the hair care knowledge, ingredients and packaging, they’re able to tap into their creativity and create custom products to gift to friends within the experience.         4. My Hello Kitty Cafe: Tycoon

        Japanese entertainment company, Sanrio, followed the popular tycoon style for their Hello Kitty experience, allowing Roblox players to create, manage and decorate their own cafe, rain or shine. Visitors are greeted with Sanrio’s famously adorable, kawaii characters in the immersive experience, before hopping behind a counter to serve other players or shop other tycoons’ shops. By completing challenges and playing custom mini-games, users could unlock rewards or win exclusive UGCs by entering giveaways. Hello Kitty made the experience extra immersive by featuring a dynamic environment: updating décor for holidays, showcasing seasonal changes such as weather and alternating between night and day.  

        5. Barbie Dreamhouse: Tycoon

        Build your own Malibu dreamhouse with Mattel’s Barbie Dreamhouse Tycoon Roblox activation. With up to four floors and 30 rooms, ranging from a yoga studio and walk-in closet to a helipad, players can build a dream home only found in Barbie’s world. Just like Barbie herself, Roblox players can try different careers via mini games in the experience or just beach and hang out in Malibu Town Square. Similar to IRL Barbies, the gamified experience highlights the ability to customize and accessorize—from the iconic blonde ponytail to fabulous outfits and makeup, there is no shortage of UGCs for these avatars. 

        6. The Ralph Lauren Winter Escape

        Ralph Lauren ventured into Roblox with a limited-term experience called “The Ralph Lauren Winter Escape” that offered a digital collection of gender-neutral clothing. Avatars could wear up to eight sportswear looks and select items from the current collections. Ralph Lauren’s Roblox experience had new product drops on a weekly basis, from new looks to limited-edition accessories and surprise bonus items. Christina Wooton, Roblox’s Vice President for Global Partnerships, commented, “This new digital experience is meant to further express Ralph Lauren’s focus on digital innovation, following its virtual store experience [by Obsess].”

        7. Crocs World: Tycoon

        Crocs World: Tycoon on Roblox allows players to harness the power of imagination and personalization in a park revolving around the iconic footwear—with custom colors, shapes and Jibbitz charms. Players can explore the beach-themed park in a Crocs Car or via Crocs Jetpack and earn likes within the game to unlock new attractions and customization possibilities. Further leaning into personalization in their virtual endeavors, Crocs launched a virtual Jibbitz Experience with Obsess, centered around self-expression, gamification and education.         Earlier this year, Hori announced a rather surprising accessory: an officially licensed Steam wireless controller. The initial reveal only mentioned a Japanese release, but it’s now confirmed the Wireless Horipad for Steam will launch in North America on December 16. The pro-style gamepad will be compatible with Windows, and Steam Deck, and sports Steam-specific features that could make it a convenient choice for PC gamers. Preorders for the first third-party controller licensed by Valve are available for $60 at Amazon.

        As noted above, the Wireless Horipad for Steam works wirelessly on Windows and Steam Deck, with an estimated 12-hour battery life. This mode uses Steam’s proprietary SteamInput controller driver to allow for the Steam-specific functionality, but there’s also a Windows-only X-Input mode that is usable over a wired USB connection if you want to play non-Steam games on PC. Windows users will also be able to adjust controller settings like thumbstick sensitivity and button mapping using Hori’s desktop app.

        The Wireless Horipad for Steam will cost $60 at launch. That puts it in the same price range as the excellent 8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller, which has Hall Effect sticks and supports PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. The Steam Horipad costs $10 more than the PC-focused Ultimate Controller with a 2.4GHz wireless connection. The 8BitDo Ultimate is at the top of our best PC controllers list, so we’re interested to see how the Wireless Horipad for Steam stacks up.

          Former Strictly pro Oti Mabuse opened up about living with pre-diabetes on Loose Women today (November 6), leaving the show’s panellists shocked.

          The dancer, who gave birth to her first child, a daughter, in December last year, explained that she was first diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which runs in her family.

          Discussing her motivation for keeping fit and healthy after her daughter was born, she dismissed the idea of ‘snapping back’ and said: “My reason for getting back into fitness was that I found out I was pre-diabetic, actually.”

          It’s about trying to get back to a point where I feel strong, I can handle my food, and keep my sugar levels alright.

          Host Charlene White interjected “Really?” before Oti continued: “I am still pre-diabetic, and it’s about trying to get back to a point where I feel strong, I can handle my food, and keep my sugar levels alright.

          “And it’s not about being skinny. It’s about being strong. It’s about being able to play with my daughter and have fun with her,” she added to applause from the audience.

          Diabetes explained

          The exact cause of gestational diabetes is unknown. But it’s thought that the placenta – which provides the foetus with water and nutrients – produces hormones that prevent the mother’s ability to use insulin effectively.

          Pre-diabetics, meanwhile, have a higher than normal blood sugar level. However, it’s not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes. Lifestyle changes are advised to stop type 2 diabetes from developing.

          In September, Oti discussed her weight loss following the birth of her daughter. She shared on Instagram that she went from a size 18 to a size 10. She said: “I started to change how I approached food, movement, and how I looked at my own body. This journey isn’t about getting skinny. It’s about gaining strength, confidence, and discipline in a way that feels sustainable and true to me.”

          Will Oti be on I’m A Celebrity this year?

          Also on Loose Women today, Oti addressed the rumours that she’ll be taking part in I’m A Celebrity this year. The show’s set to begin on November 17. But the dancer did her best to not give anything away.

          Charlene teased: “Now there is a question I have to ask because your winter might actually be quite warm,” as Oti pretended to sip her drink to avoid answering the question.

          When asked if she’s a fan of the show, she said: “I love I’m A Celebrity, I really really really do. Since I came to this country, it’s been one of the shows I’ve watched and am a huge fan of.”

            Popular NFT marketplace OpenSea has announced a significant platform revamp expected to launch in December 2024.

            This overhaul comes as OpenSea faces increasing competition from emerging NFT platforms like Blur and Magic Eden, as well as ongoing regulatory scrutiny from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

            With the teaser of this new platform, OpenSea appears to be signaling a fresh approach in a challenging market environment where declining volumes and user migration have impacted its standing.

            What do we know so far?

            On November 4, OpenSea shared a teaser video hinting at a new platform, inviting users to join a waitlist for early access. Commenting on the X announcement, CEO Devin Finzer described the reboot as a complete reimagining of OpenSea, suggesting that the platform will feature significant technical and user experience changes, though specific details remain limited.

            According to Vaibhav “vasa” Saini, OpenSea Pro’s founder, the revamp has been a year in development. Discord chat screenshots are also circulating indicating that the update would include support for Bitcoin Ordinals, though Saini emphasized that this feature would be “the least interesting” aspect of the platform.

            In a separate screenshot, Saini also mentioned possible incentives for holders of the Gemesis NFT collection. Additionally, screenshots from the platform’s beta version also show new features such as a leaderboard and rewards tab was shared by Wale on X.

            Why is this significant?

            OpenSea’s planned relaunch comes as the platform faces a shifting NFT landscape. Whilst it was once a dominant marketplace, OpenSea has lost ground to platforms like Magic Eden, which has drawn users with its more active development and features.

            Additionally, OpenSea is under scrutiny from the SEC, which has questioned whether certain assets on the platform could be classified as unregistered securities. This has led to increased speculation about how the platform will handle compliance and regulatory concerns going forward.

            Some users are also speculating that OpenSea could introduce a token or even a dedicated Layer 2 Ethereum chain, although the company has not confirmed either possibility. Given recent legal actions in the NFT and crypto spaces, a token launch could pose additional risks.
