Is India Set to Host the World’s Largest AI Data Center? Reliance Grou

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group has unveiled plans for what might become the world’s largest data center by capacity in a significant move that could reshape the global AI infrastructure landscape. Located in Jamnagar, India, this ambitious facility is projected to reach an unprecedented three gigawatts of capacity—a scale that would fundamentally transform India’s position in the global AI ecosystem.

Breaking New Ground in Data Center Scale

The planned Jamnagar facility starkly contrasts with today’s leading data centers, which typically operate below one gigawatt capacity. Even the Sines data center in Europe, which is among the largest currently under development, is expected to barely exceed one gigawatt when fully operational. If completed as envisioned, Reliance’s facility would establish a new benchmark for data center scale globally.

This expansion is critical as data center capacity becomes vital to support growing AI workloads. Industry analysts at McKinsey & Co. project that global data center capacity could more than triple by 2030, reaching approximately 219 gigawatts annually—yet still potentially falling short of demand.

Democratizing AI Through Competitive Pricing

A central element of Reliance’s strategy involves leveraging this massive infrastructure to offer AI inference services at significantly reduced costs. Ambani, the 67-year-old chairman and managing director of Reliance Group, has publicly committed to creating “the world’s lowest AI inferencing cost, right here in India.”

This approach mirrors Ambani’s previous market strategies, particularly in telecommunications, where aggressive pricing disrupted established competitors and transformed market dynamics. By investing heavily in NVIDIA’s AI semiconductors and building at unprecedented scale, Reliance appears positioned to replicate this disruptive approach in the AI services market, potentially.

“By leveraging our expertise in infrastructure, networking, operations, software, and data and by collaborating with our global partners, our goal is to make AI applications in India more affordable than anywhere else, making AI accessible to all,” Ambani stated last year.

Strengthening India’s Digital Sovereignty

Beyond commercial considerations, the Jamnagar facility represents a strategic move to strengthen India’s digital infrastructure independence. Currently, India’s total data center capacity sits below one gigawatt—meaning this single project could potentially triple the nation’s capacity by 2027.

This expansion addresses a critical need as India’s AI adoption accelerates across both its thriving startup ecosystem and established enterprises. By providing localized AI compute resources, the facility would reduce reliance on overseas infrastructure while potentially positioning India as a self-sufficient AI hub with global reach.

Reports indicate that Reliance also intends to power the new data center predominantly with renewable energy, aligning with global sustainability imperatives while enhancing the project’s long-term viability.

The Global AI Infrastructure Race

Reliance isn’t alone in pursuing massive AI infrastructure development. Tech giants, including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon, are investing billions in expanding their data center footprints specifically for AI workloads. Meanwhile, the Stargate Project in the United States has attracted commitments from OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle ranging from $100 billion to $500 billion.

Despite these substantial investments, experts predict a significant capacity shortfall will persist. The United States alone may face a 15-gigawatt gap by 2030, requiring twice the data center capacity that has been built since 2000.

Looking Ahead

As Reliance moves forward with its ambitious plans, the project raises important questions about the global distribution of AI compute resources. If successful, the Jamnagar facility could help address some of the projected global demand while simultaneously reshaping India’s role in the international AI landscape.

While these massive infrastructure projects take shape, businesses and researchers continue to seek immediate access to AI compute resources through alternatives like cloud GPU rental services, which provide flexible scaling without requiring direct infrastructure investment.

The race to build sufficient AI infrastructure continues globally. Reliance’s three-gigawatt ambition represents one of the boldest statements yet about the scale needed to power the next generation of AI innovation.

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Takes Will’s Breath Away Using Grandma’s Luring Tactics?

    0
Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Takes Will’s Breath Away Using Grandma’s Luring Tactics?

Next week on Bold and the Beautiful, Luna Nozawa carries out her plan to lure Will Spencer into changing his mind about playing with the bad girl on the CBS soap. The pardoned murderer and her grandmother, Sheila Carter, conjured up a plan for Luna to infiltrate Forrester Creations in disguise.

Then Sheila gave her a plan of attack to lure the Spencer son. We saw Luna make her way into the building last week, and the B&B previews suggest it works because she’s bouncing around in lingerie for Will next week.

Bold and the Beautiful: Will Spencer is Ready But…

Bold and the Beautiful has Will Spencer (Crew Morrow) acting overly ripe for intimacy, but the girl he professes to love is not ready. Electra Forrester (Laneya Grace) acts skittish around Will and backs off when he makes even the slightest advance. Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada) happened to witness Electra as she shut down Will when he became desperate for some intimate time with his girlfriend.

    B&B | CBS

The newly pardoned Luna is making it her business to give Will Spencer what he desperately lusts for. So, with a little help from Grandma, she is on her way.

That disguise they came up with on Bold and Beautiful makes Luna Nozawa stick out like a sore thumb. But despite the very fake-looking mustache, she got into the building with a pizza in hand.

B&B: Luna Nozawa Hits the Bedroom Line

Bold and the Beautiful is getting a lot of use out of Brooke Logan’s (Katherine Kelly Lang) bedroom fashion line these days. It has turned into an ambush room for the soap’s characters.

The lingerie is still warm from Brooke Logan wearing it, waiting for Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) to enter the room. But that failed when Taylor Hayes (Rebecca Budig) came in his place. But it looks like Luna has a little more luck than Brooke did. Or does she?

So, the Bold and the Beautiful preview has Luna looking a bit excited next week, in some risque lingerie for Will. And while the soap didn’t show us Will’s reaction to this, it is bound to take his breath away, one way or another.

Either he is aghast over the gall of this tainted woman to make this seductive play for him at FC with people all around. Or, he is so frustrated from getting turned down by Electra that he goes for it. And if that’s the case, then Luna really takes his breath away.

But this is B&B, where drama spins, so maybe Luna gets abruptly stopped by a third party who enters the room.

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Stopped Dead in Her Tracks?

Sheila Carter gave her newfound granddaughter, Luna, several pointers last week on Bold and the Beautiful. Luna Nozawa was worried because Will kept shutting her down, and she needed to find a way to reel him in. But her nine-toed grandmother told her what to do. She suggested the part of Will Spencer’s anatomy to go after.

The B&B preview suggests that Luna did just that. So, as Luna bounces around in lingerie, attempting to entice Will into that bad girl fun she promised him, someone likely stops her. So, someone at FC likely enters the room, bringing her private lingerie showing to a screeching halt. But who might that be?

Katie Logan (Heather Tom) would be the most feasible person to bust up Luna’s plan. She would put a stop to it, especially if Luna has her son’s undivided attention. Will Spencer’s mother would not hold back. Katie would become livid over a scene like this. Electra would also be a likely candidate to bust in, since she works there. But a scene like that would leave her furious as well.

But what if it is Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) who comes by since Will has been ignoring him since finding out he freed Luna. Then that would be a scene to remember. Forrester Creations is filled with people, employees, and guests. So, any one of them could walk through the door as Luna Nozawa tries to fulfill Will Spencer’s needs on the CBS soap.

Head back to Soap Dirt for the latest Bold and the Beautiful spoilers.

How to sign up for the Marathon alpha

The Marathon alpha gives you a chance to play Bungie’s forthcoming extraction shooter significantly ahead of its Sept. 23 release date.

Announced during Bungie’s Marathon stream on April 12, the Marathon alpha allows you to check out four characters on two maps. Like most alpha tests, though, it also doubles as a technical stress test for the game, meaning you could run into connectivity issues and other hiccups.

Below, we’ll tell you how to sign up for the Marathon alpha, including some other information about what to expect from the alpha.

How to sign up for the Marathon alpha

    Image: Bungie

Currently, the only way to get into the Marathon alpha test is to join Bungie’s Marathon Discord, which you can access via the following link: https://discord.gg/marathonthegame.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown on how to sign up for the Marathon alpha:

Sign up for the Marathon Discord and agree to the rules.Go to the #alpha_access chat and type /alpha.Watch for the Discord bot to ping you in the #new-noise chat and follow the custom link it offers.Create a Bungie account if you don’t have one, or sign into an existing account.Select your platform of choice: PlayStation, Steam, or Xbox.Thoroughly read and, if you’re comfortable, accept the Marathon alpha NDA.Fill out the Marathon survey, which asks you about your preferred platforms (including PC specs, if that’s your choice), your experience with past Bungie games, and your familiarity with PvP games like Marathon.Close out of the survey and return to the original tab to confirm that you’ve been signed up for the alpha.

In a post-script on the survey, Bungie notes completing the form enters you into “a pool” of prospective players but does not guarantee access to the alpha. Codes will be sent to players the week of April 14, and throughout the runtime of the alpha.

It’s possible Bungie could add more methods to get Marathon alpha access in the future, but the studio hasn’t announced anything like that just yet.

When does the Marathon alpha start and end?

The alpha will start on Wednesday, April 23, at 10 a.m. PDT and run through Sunday, May 4, at 10 a.m. PDT.

Bungie said in a FAQ on its website that this particular alpha is focused on North America and only available to players ages 18 or older. Codes are locked to your particular Bungie account and thus can’t be given away or sold. Access will also not come with friend codes, although players will be able to group up with others who’ve been selected.

If you are selected for the Marathon alpha, you’ll get an email with instructions on how to download the game, which is about 6 GB. Curious about the PC specs? See them here!

Bungie also confirmed that there will be additional opportunities to play Marathon ahead of its Sept. 23 release date. All account progress will be wiped between the alpha test and any the game’s launch.

What to expect from the Marathon alpha

A Runner in Marathon runs toward a lowering ship

    Image: Bungie

We were able to play the Marathon alpha early as part of a media and creator preview event at Bungie HQ, though some aspects might be different than the public alpha.

During our playtime, we were able to check out two different maps: Perimeter and Dire Marsh. Perimeter is a smaller, early game map, where Dire Marsh pits six squads of three against each other in a large campus.

There were a wide variety of different weapons and items in our tests, including golden legendary items with powerful unique effects — although they were quite rare. It’s unclear if Bungie is holding back some weapon types for the full game, but the studio did confirm in a Q&A that there are unique weapon mods we weren’t able to play with.

We had access to four Runners — what Marathon calls its heroes — in the alpha:

Locus: A tank-like character with a powerful shield, a rocket salvo, and boosters on his legs.Glitch: A speed character who can quickly traverse the area with her arm cannon and double jump.Blackbird: An information character who can scan the environment to help locate potential threats.Void: A stealth character capable of going invisible at will to escape or surprise his enemies.

We were also able to test a few contracts, which are essentially quests that help improve your relationships with various factions. Advancing your faction progress will allow you to upgrade your account with more vault space, access to more advanced items in the shop, and more.

Disclosure: Parts of this article are based on a Marathon preview event held at Bungie’s headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, from April 2-4. Bungie provided Polygon’s travel and accommodations for the event. You can find additional information about Polygon’s ethics policy here.

How a Philosopher Who Criticized Trump and Musk Turned Out to Be an AI Experiment – Decrypt

How a Philosopher Who Criticized Trump and Musk Turned Out to Be an AI Experiment – Decrypt

Jianwei Xun, the supposed Hong Kong philosopher whose book “Hypnocracy” claims Elon Musk and President Donald Trump use utopian promises and empty language, never really existed, at least not physically.

Instead, the acclaimed author was a “collaborative” creation between Andrea Colamedici, an Italian publisher, and two AI tools – Claude from Anthropic and ChatGPT from OpenAI.

“I wanted to write a book that would help people better understand the new ways power manifests itself,” Colamedici told Decrypt.

But it wasn’t until after an investigative report from L’Espresso that Xun’s website was updated to acknowledge the experiment, snapshots from Wayback Machine reviewed by Decrypt show.

Still, the book received critical acclaim.

L’Espresso reports that L’Opinion, a French daily, had detailed how President Emmanuel Macron had “appreciated” Xun’s writings. Earlier in February, a roundtable at the World AI Cannes Festival extensively discussed Xun’s ideas.

Éditions Gallimard, a leading French publisher, has committed to a new translation from the Italian original, after the first edition in French from Philosophie Magazine. A Spanish translation from Editorial Rosamerón is slated for release on April 20.

    Vibe philosophy?

Xun was “an exercise in ontological engineering,” Colamedici explained in a post-revelation interview with Le Grand Continent.

While this experiment with AI looked novel, critics point out the book could be in trouble.

The European Union’s AI Act, approved in March 2024, considers failure to label AI-generated content a serious violation – a requirement critics claim Colamedici’s experiment disregarded.

In previous versions of its bio, Xun was described as a “Hong Kong-born cultural analyst and philosopher” who studied at “Dublin University.”

    That wasn’t true.

According to an anonymous source from the University College of Dublin’s philosophy department, no person named “Jianwei Xun” exists in their database or those of other Dublin-based universities.

“The fact that the author had inverted the Chinese order ‘surname-name’ was an immediate red flag,” Laura Ruggieri, a Hong Kong-based researcher, told Decrypt, explaining how she spotted inconsistencies as early as February.

Ruggieri previously taught semiotics—the study of symbols and signs—at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She asked her colleagues about Xun. Nobody knew who that was.

“Not a single one of them has ever met Xun or heard his name,” Ruggieri said. “If Colamedici had used his real name and admitted that AI had written the book, no one would have bought it.”

Responding to those allegations to Decrypt, Colamedici claimed these were deliberate clues “left for those willing to question and investigate,” claiming the revelation was “predetermined.”

“We actually did everything possible to make Xun’s non-existence evident to anyone with even minimally inquisitive eyes,” Colamedici said.

Colamedici insists that AI did not write the book. Instead, Claude and ChatGPT “served as interlocutors.”

    In the words of Xun

The book describes itself as a “journey into the fractured mirror of modern reality,” and discusses how Musk and Trump have constructed an alternate reality through obsessive repetition.

It was written “for those who suspect that the world they see is only a shadow of something far more complex,” its Amazon blurb claims.

Xun’s thoughts center on “hypnocracy,” describing a regime that exerts control through “algorithmic modulation” of collective consciousness instead of censorship.

    In English: fake news.

Xun claims that Trump’s speeches and social media posts create conditions of uncertainty.

Trump “empties language: his words, repeated endlessly, become empty signifiers, devoid of meaning yet charged with hypnotic power,” Xun wrote.

Xun claims Musk makes promises “destined not to materialize,” by “flooding our imagination” with ventures such as space colonization and neural interfaces.

“Together they modulate desires, rewrite expectations, colonize the unconscious,” the AI philosopher wrote.

Spokepeople for Musk and Trump did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

It’s important to note that none of these details have been confirmed by NetEase. Due to this, we will have to wait a few more weeks to find out more information about the big mid-season update. We are, however, hoping that the leak is accurate, as adding a flying Marvel Rivals Strategist would be a great move by the developer..

For now, Season 2 offers plenty of new content, including seven new free skins. Emma Frost, the game’s newest Vanguard, is also out, and she’s been very fun to play.

Alison Steadman, 78, issues sad health update as she reveals she’s been living in a ‘wheelchair for eight weeks’

Gavin And Stacey star Alison Steadman has revealed she’s been living in a wheelchair following her nasty fall.

The 78-year-old actress, who played Pam in the popular series, fell in Dubai at the Desert Stanzas event in February.

Due to an uneven pavement, she harmed herself and was photographed at the airport with her wrists covered in bandages and her foot in a cast while in a wheelchair.

Alison Steadman shares health update following fall

At the time, Alison said she “went flying” when the accident happened.

She continued: “At the hospital, I had tablets for the pain. It’s been terrible. I don’t think I’ve broken my leg but I twisted it badly so there could be a hairline fracture.”

Alison shared that she needed follow-up treatment at her local hospital.

Now, in her latest update, the Out of Character author has issued more sad news.

‘The important thing is that I’m alive’

During an interview with the Daily Star, Alison said she “knew when I fell that it was serious”, insisting: “The pain was so bad.”

She explained: “If I’d banged my head the way I banged my foot, I promise you, I would not be here.

“Every time I get fed up, I say that to myself. The important thing is that I’m alive.”

Alison has suffered a fracture and depends on doing her daily duties while in a wheelchair. “I’ve been in a wheelchair for eight weeks. I am getting a bit frustrated. I want to get out and about more,” she said.

Alison looked on the positive side of things, stating that with her wheelchair, she can “get around my flat” and “move around”. If not, she’d “be in bed or sitting in a chair and I don’t want that”.

‘Sitar For Mental Health’ (Delhi) Review | Rishab Rikhiram Sharma’s Soul-Stirring Sitar Concert That Transcended Time

Hot on the heels of becoming “Rock’s Hottest Ticket” in 1987, U2 embarked on the “LoveTown Tour,” which was a quasi-extension of their 1987 “Joshua Tree Tour” that brought their Grammy-winning album, The Joshua Tree, across the US and Europe. This new leg, which visited the countries down under and far East that the band wouldn’t revisit for many years (about 30 years in the case of the latter), brought the hits pre-Joshua Tree along with some songs from their new album Rattle and Hum. The shows were great — there are plenty of bootlegs out there — but there was one specific show that many U2 fans know. That’s the December 30, 1989 show at the Point Depot in Dublin when Bono delivered his “dream it all up again” speech.

Now, this speech wasn’t just another one of Bono’s famous hyperbolic word soups — like when he claimed U2 was re-applying for the position of the best rock band during the promotional tour for All That You Can’t Leave Behind after their so-so Pop album — but a promise to reinvent themselves. After all, U2’s music in 1987 was so fixated on America; taking influence from the greats like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, etc., and for as great as “Where the Streets Have No Name” is, U2 needed to mix it up. And boy, did Achtung Baby do that. This reinvention saw U2 go as far as satirizing themselves and other rock stars on their “ZooTV Tour” in 1992 and ‘93, and you could make the case that Achtung Baby is not just the best album the band has made, but the most crucial album they’ve made.

Over 30 years later, U2 is once again reinventing itself. They’ve had quite the roller coaster the past few years, releasing albums (some free and some not), touring the world with their new albums while also celebrating an old one and Bono finally wrote an autobiography. Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story is the ultimate guide to the inner workings of Bono and the most vulnerable autobiography to come from a rockstar. U2 fans have already got a good amount of Bono’s story with Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience (and their support tours that utilized a giant LED screen to bring a spectacle-filled show to life), and readers of the book probably caught onto the fact that each chapter was named after a song of U2’s catalog. U2 decided to rework 40 songs from their old catalog with Songs of Surrender, the supposed final entry in the Songs of series (although here’s hoping Songs of Ascent eventually comes out of the shadows). While U2 fans are probably sick of the reflective, melancholic U2 that has dominated much of the band’s work over the past decade, give Songs of Surrender a chance. For many artists, a compilation of their old hits reworked would seem like a lazy excuse to put out an album and make some cash, but if there’s one thing that U2 has taught us, it’s that they don’t operate like that — and Songs of Surrender is a predominantly successful attempt at once again dreaming it up again.

Before even starting the album, you’re probably asking yourself: How can there possibly be 40 tracks — isn’t that too much U2? Simply put, no. With 14 studio albums, there is such a wide variety of songs to explore. And almost every album is represented (though some love for No Line on the Horizon would’ve been appreciated). The word reworking, or reimagining if you’d prefer, is crucial to understanding this album. You have to remember, U2 began releasing music in 1980 and they sounded like a band trying to do The Clash or Joy Division. Their early music from Boy and October is great, but “A Day Without Me” or “Stories for Boys” sound nothing like “Red Flag Day” or “Song for Someone.” Taking a punk song and making it into a somber lullaby, as U2 does with “Stories for Boys,” or how they strip down arena-rockers like “Out of Control” and “I Will Follow” from the same album is something to behold. The Edge’s piano playing throughout the album — particularly on “Stories for Boys” and “If God Will Send His Angels” — is straight out of Joe Hisaishi’s scores for Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away and the acoustic guitar sounds like their music from Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark.

Granted, not every song gets a wild reinvention. “Every Breaking Wave,” outside of the drop in key by a full step that U2 has been doing since the European leg of the “iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour,” is pretty similar to the rendition found on the Songs of Innocence bonus disc from the “Acoustic Sessions” or the live rendition from the 2018 Abbey Road show. Even Bono’s cadence on the chorus’ “off our feet knows that we’re in love with defeat” lines harken back to recent live performances of the song.

“Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” is another song that’s hard to reinvent considering the fact that it has been a go-to for any Bono and The Edge solo appearances. And this rendition — for as good as Bono’s voice is on it — is quite similar to any promo appearance where they played this since the song’s release. “Song for Someone” is another song that’s really hard to reinvent due to its musical structure. Luckily, it’s the last notable song that’s not drastically different from its original counterpart. To give it some credit, it does combine the piano-driven “Acoustic Sessions” sound and an acoustic guitar. Other than that, it’s very similar to the original song. It’s a bit disappointing considering you could’ve used that spot on a different song — but more on that later.

On the flip side of that coin, some songs are drastically different. I already mentioned “Stories for Boys,” but another early song, “Two Hearts Beat as One,” a standout from War, trades one of Adam Clayton’s signature thumping bass lines for a piano riff that mimics it with a Pop-era disco beat in the background. The Edge hasn’t gotten a lead vocal part in a while, that changes with this rendition of “Two Hearts.” He’s got a beautiful voice — just listen to his part in “Stuck in a Moment” or his lead vocals on “Van Dieman’s Land” — and it’s nice to give him the spotlight.

“Miracle Drug” is almost unrecognizable. Driven by a tribal drum beat, it’s far more meditative than the original song and it took until the chorus for me to recognize the song. Ditto for another song from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, “Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own” — one of Bono’s best songs about his father.

When looking over the tracklist, eager to dig in — thank you to Full Stop Management for sending the album early — one of the tracks I was most curious about was “The Little Things That Give You Away.” Often compared to U2’s sound of the 80s — I’ve heard this comparison a lot — I really didn’t know how you translate this slow-burn song that builds to a crashing crescendo into a stripped-down arrangement. A little acoustic guitar goes a long way, and this rendition of the song, while not packing quite the same punch as the live performances in 2017 did, brings a new flavor to a song that I never thought could be changed.

Coming into listening to the album, I was worried that “The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)” — an arena rocker much like how “The Little Things” rocks stadiums — would just sound like the “Acoustic Sessions” version. But instead, it sounds like Imagine Dragons’ “Believer.” I’m not sure if the drastic lyric change in the chorus was completely necessary, or more important works, but the verses sound phenomenal.

Similarly, “Where the Streets Have No Name” is given a far more ambient rendition than anything U2 fans have heard (unless you’ve gone to one of Bono’s “Stories of Surrender” shows)— even closely resembling Phoebe Bridgers’ ending of “Scott Street” in the middle eight.

I’m also a sucker for “With or Without You,” and I will listen to any rendition and appreciate it. The Songs of Surrender version begins with a repeated guitar note — like the delayed note at the beginning of The Joshua Tree‘s version of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For — features some of Bono’s finest work on the album. The monotone, almost spoken-word vocals bring out a new side to this classic song. His aged voice gives the song new meaning. I have listened to plenty of live renditions from all tours of this song, and as a U2 nerd, I appreciate Bono finishing his “aways” in the “give yourself away” lines. The way he begins escalating his voice in the chorus brings me back to one of the Chicago shows in 1987 where Bono went all out in the same part of the song. Stellar stuff, though I could’ve gone for a “Shine Like Stars” refrain to close it out.

And that’s another interesting aspect of Songs of Surrender: the snippets, or lack thereof. U2 fans know the “Here Us Coming” or “Invisible” refrains at the end of most live renditions of “One” or Bono’s habit of channeling David Bowie or Paul Simon in the latter half of live renditions of “Bad,” and those are nonexistent here. Totally understandable — Why would you snippet other artists on a studio track? — but I will admit it’s odd not hearing “Heroes” at the tail end of “Bad” or no falsetto “woo-hoo’s” at the end of “One,” but that’s just the U2 fan in me and I have live albums to quench that thirst.

“The Fly” gets a similar treatment as “Two Hearts” — replacing the signature wah-wah riff is the picking of a two-note riff (basically playing the original riff sans the effects pedal) but still letting Clayton groove to the reggae beat with his bass makes for a better version of the song than the intermission version played on the “iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour.” It helps that the song is played in a lower key right in Bono’s current vocal range, which in turn likely also helps The Edge with his falsetto vocal harmony. The signature guitar solo is still there to a degree, just replaced with an acoustic guitar riff that can’t help but make you think of Paul McCartney’s “Long Tailed Winter Bird.”

There are a few duds, but they’re relatively few and far between. “Stay (Faraway, So Close!)” already has such a template lined up for how to strip that song back — similar to “Stuck in a Moment” and “Every Breaking Wave” — so props for making up a new arrangement, but sometimes if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it (an expression I’ve found myself using a lot lately). The version from Songs of Surrender doesn’t come alive until the choruses.

The rendition of “Ordinary Love” is a bit redundant, if nothing else, purely because of its similarity to the version from Jimmy Fallon’s premiere of The Tonight Show or the rooftop performance from a few years back on a Brazilian news channel. The song’s one of the band’s best in recent years, it just goes unscathed both lyrically and musically. By that standard, I probably have to call out “Song for Somone,” though I really adore that song. “Get Out of Your Own Way” falls apart rather quickly in its latter half. Again, there’s a blueprint for stripping this one down, but the drastic shift in the lyrics, barely cramming them into the space given, really bogs the song down somewhat and sounds like those times when Bono forgets words on stage, cramming in words into the stanzas of the song — except it’s a full song of that. That said, Bono and The Edge sound great in the choruses. I’ve also never been a big fan of any version of “Vertigo” post the “Vertigo Tour” — the chorus has really lacked punch since they got rid of the backing vocals in the choruses to back up the “hola’s” and “dónde está’s” — but this version sounds better than the times Bono and The Edge have soloed this song on appearances on Ellen and such with its utilization and reliance on orchestral instruments (once again sounding like a song from their Turn Off the Dark soundtrack).

As a U2 fan, I’d be remiss if I didn’t name some songs that are ripe for a reinvention. “So Cruel,” off Achtung Baby, has hardly been acknowledged since the “ZooTV Tour” — even then, it was played a handful of times and never in full — which will finally change at the MSG Sphere this year. Bono played a fantastic version for the From the Sky Down documentary, but it’d be really cool to hear Bono, now over a decade removed from that performance, sing that song — especially with that falsetto-driven chorus. “A Sort of Homecoming” was brushed off in 2017 for the “Joshua Tree Tour,” and hearing a new version would’ve been cool since they designed an electronic backing track for those performances. “God Part II” really needs to make its way back into U2 canon. The song’s too good to be ignored, and a new rendition would’ve been intriguing given how the original toed the line of the Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby sounds. The last few I’ll mention are “Love Rescue Me,” “The Wanderer” — which really could have replaced “Stay” — and “The Showman (Little More Better).” In the case of “The Showman,” I was so excited when I saw it was a chapter title in Surrender. It’s a standout track from Songs of Experience, and I would’ve loved to see U2 take another swing at the song. After all, they dropped it from their setlist in 2018 after rehearsing it.

Love them or hate them, U2 has done it again. Songs of Surrender is the best reimagining of nostalgia since Cat Stevens/Yusuf’s reimagining of Tea Time for the Tillerman. Coming in with the knowledge that the band’s stadium anthems have been stripped down into slower, more meditative renditions is important, but it’s filled with gems. Very few live up to the weighty legacies of their predecessors, but I doubt that the point of the album is to replace the originals. Sometimes, you can’t make it on your own and you’ve got to change, and if that means dreaming up 40 of your biggest songs to date again, in the case of U2, let them sing their new (old) songs.

The essential tracks (in no particular order):

“Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”

“If God Will Send His Angels”

          “With or Without You”

          “Bad”

“The Little Things That Give You Away”

          “Stories for Boys”

          “Bad”

Songs of Surrender will be released on March 17.
