Post Pectra, Ethereum now targets efficiency with 60 million gas limit expansion


Ethereum is eyeing an increase in its gas limit by 66% to 60 million units to improve transaction capacity and network efficiency.

On May 7, Ethereum core developer Parithosh Jayanthi confirmed that the 60 million gas limit would be rolled out on the blockchain’s mainnet network after successfully testing on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets.

He stated:

“We start shipping 60M on sepolia tomorrow, hoodi/holesky shortly after. If its deemed safe and we patch all found bugs, we ship on mainnet.”

The gas limit determines the maximum computational effort a block can carry, which includes basic transactions, smart contract executions, and interactions with decentralized applications.

By increasing this limit, Ethereum can process more activity per block, potentially reducing congestion and enabling faster execution.

According to community resource PumpTheGas, the upgrade could lower the network’s Layer 1 transaction fees by 10% to 30%, depending on network activity.

Meanwhile, this would mark the second gas limit increase for this year when completed.

In February, a similar move saw the limit rise from 30 million to 36 million. Notably, this was the first gas limit adjustment since 2021.

Ethereum validators rally behind upgrade

The proposed increase has received significant support from Ethereum validators and leading voices in the ecosystem.

Available data shows that nearly 80% of Ethereum validators support increasing the current gas limit from 36 million. Around 10,000 have signaled readiness to implement the higher limit of 60 million.

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake confirmed his validator is already configured for the change. He described the move as safe, especially after recent improvements introduced by the Pectra update.

Ethereum core developer Eric Conner also urged others to follow suit, emphasizing the long-term benefits of a higher gas ceiling.

Meanwhile, this widespread support is consistent with previous calls from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and researcher Dankrad Feist, who have advocated for expanding the base-layer capacity.

Buterin has repeatedly emphasized the need to scale Ethereum’s base layer, suggesting a tenfold increase in gas limits to support growing demand despite the growth of Layer 2 solutions.

    Ahead of the VE Day service at Westminster Abbey this afternoon, GMB broadcast live from the central London landmark today to remember 80 years since victory was declared in Europe.

    Susanna Reid spoke to several World War II veterans about their memories of eight decades ago from Westminster Abbey for Thursday’s show, while Ed Balls and Charlotte Hawkins fronted the ITV breakfast programme from the Good Morning Britain studio.

    Matt Goss and Larry Lamb were also guests for the outside broadcast. But amid the admiration expressed on social media for the likes of former Wren Dorothea Barron and Royal Navy veteran Thomas Cuthbert, viewers also had concerns regarding the conditions they had to endure.

    That’s because, with both celebs and elderly veterans sitting outside, they were exposed to the unseasonably chilly May weather.

    Stunned GMB fans watching at home were incredulous that Dorothea, 100, was required to be out in the very fresh air when she could just as well be interviewed indoors, and maybe with a cup of tea, too!

    At one point, when Dorothea was explaining she styled her hair into a high bun in order to fulfil the height requirements to join up as a Wren, she stood up alongside Susanna to reveal her stature.

    But it wasn’t until she was urged to sit down again that Dorothea hinted she could be more comfortable.

    ‘We’ll wrap you up in a blanket’

    “Do you want to have another seat?” Susanna asked as Dorothea concluded her story. “Don’t want to keep you standing. And we’ll wrap you up in a blanket as we need to keep you safe,” the presenter continued, as Dorothea offered her own perspective.

    “Keep me warm!” Dorothea joked, echoing Susanna’s words.

    Correcting herself, Susanna added: “And keep you warm at 100 years old!”

    However, over on X, it was apparent some observers were not impressed.

    “Why has Susanna Reid gone outside?” one X user pondered. “Nothing happening except veterans getting very cold. There was no reason for her to be outside.”

    Another person agreed: “Why they have them outside in the cold, surely they can interview indoors? #gmb.”

    A thanksgiving service will be held at Westminster Abbey today to mark 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day. It starts at midday.

    As well as the Westminster Abbey service, there will also be a concert to mark VE Day later on this evening.

    Held at Horse Guards Parade, it will be attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla, and will include performances from stars such as Samantha Barks, Fleur East, John Newman and others.

    VE Day 80: A Celebration to Remember will be broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer from 8pm until 10pm.

    Leaders from the Group of Seven countries are reportedly looking to discuss how the numerous crypto hacks and malicious cyber activities that North Korea has engaged in for years could be addressed and mitigated.

    Discussions will likely center around mounting geopolitical concerns and trade tensions between the U.S. and the G7’s other member countries, according to an initial report from Bloomberg citing sources with knowledge of the summit’s plans.

    North Korea’s actions have been characterized as alarming, with investigations revealing how stolen funds, most of which stem from the crypto industry, have been used to support its development of weapons of mass destruction.

    The summit, hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at Kananaskis, Alberta, will run from June 15 to 17, bringing leaders from the world’s seven most advanced economies.

    G7 member countries include France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., the U.S., and this year’s host, Canada.

    Crypto hacking playbook

    The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has established a rigorous cyber operation in recent years, often possessing sophisticated means to target and seize digital assets from vulnerable protocols.

    Its offensives have gained notoriety for employing increasingly complex tactics, resulting in major losses, some of which have included Axie Infinity’s loss of $622 million or WazirX’s $230 million theft.

    The discussions come as North Korea has shown deepening ties with Russia in recent years, which have included sending military aid to the former Soviet empire amid its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

    Those ties heighten threats “by sharing tools and expertise, complicating attribution and response efforts,” Luis Lubeck, project manager at crypto cybersecurity firm Hacken, told Decrypt in December last year.

    Beyond the more commonly known Lazarus Group, other threat actors are working behind the scenes, according to an analysis of the regime’s operational structure by blockchain security expert Samczsun of research-driven crypto investment firm Paradigm.

    In February, crypto exchange Bybit suffered the industry’s largest hack at $1.4 billion, with North Korea’s Lazarus Group pegged as the culprit by cybersecurity firms and later confirmed by federal authorities.

    Minecraft fans will be able to watch the wildly popular film adaptation from the comfort of their couches soon. Though preorders for the various Blu-ray editions have been available since the film hit theaters on April 4, the home video release dates weren’t announced until May 7. But we now know that A Minecraft Movie releases in digital format on May 13, and the 4K Blu-ray release will follow on June 24. You can preorder the digital version on Prime Video for $25. Multiple physical editions are up for grabs, including A Minecraft Movie’s Limited Edition Steelbook on 4K Blu-ray and Walmart’s exclusive (and very cool) Crafting Table Edition on 1080p Blu-ray.

    A Minecraft Movie pulled in mixed reviews from critics, but it has proven to be a massive hit with audiences across the globe. The family-friendly film starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge is closing in on $900 million at the box office.

    A Minecraft Movie is also available in standard edition format on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. The standard edition 4K Blu-ray includes a digital copy, but unlike with the Steelbook, you will not get the 1080p Blu-ray disc. Likewise, the standard Blu-ray edition includes Digital, but you will miss out on the DVD found in the Crafting Table Edition.

      Michelle Saniei has no complaints about her position at The Valley’s season 2 reunion.

      “I was told that it was actually one of the hardest seating charts to do because there were just so many people that didn’t get along,” Michelle, 38, exclusively shared with Us Weekly on Tuesday, May 6. “At one point, I was next to Brittany [Cartwright] and it just kept switching and switching until the last minute.”

      On Friday, May 2, Bravo revealed the seating chart for The Valley’s first-ever reunion.

      Brittany, 36, and her estranged husband, Jax Taylor, were seated closest to host Andy Cohen while Michelle and Zack Wickham were placed furthest away.

      “It is what it is,” Michelle told Us. “I don’t think it means anything. And they told me that it didn’t. To be honest, I didn’t want to be directly across from [my estranged husband] Jesse [Lally], so I was fine with it.”

      Although season 2 is just getting started, the cast taped their reunion show earlier than expected — presumably because cast members Kristen Doute and Nia Sanchez are pregnant and expecting babies in the coming weeks.

      While Michelle couldn’t share details about what went down during the taping, she admitted to Us that she knew very little about what Bravo reunions entailed.

      “I never watched a reality TV reunion, nothing,” she revealed. “I’m just going to go into it — I always do — and just be who I am. … I felt like I got to say what I wanted to say.”

      When asked how Andy, 56, was feeling after a long day of taping, Michelle believes he was surprised but satisfied.

      “I think he was a little bit in shock,” she guessed. “I think it went well.”

      Ever since Michelle signed up for The Valley, the reality star has experienced her fair share of drama with the cast.

      Before season 1 kicked off in March 2024, Us exclusively confirmed that Michelle and Jesse, 44, had separated after nearly six years of marriage. Since then, cameras have captured the couple struggling to get along as they attempt to amicably coparent their 4-year-old daughter, Isabella.

      When asked about possibly signing up for season 3, Michelle said she wants fans to see her in a happier space with boyfriend Aaron Nosler.

      “It would be really nice to be like, I’m divorced, and this is me finally happy,” she said. “Aaron comes on here and there and you get to see how happy I am, but I feel like I was still dealing with Jesse and the divorce. … I just recently moved into Aaron’s house. Now that we’re living together, it would be nice to continue the story in a positive way.”
