How Did Handmaid’s Tale Series Finale Set Up Testaments Spinoff?

The Handmaid’s Tale is officially over — but its spinoff The Testaments is just beginning.

During the Tuesday, May 27, conclusion to the hit Hulu series, June (Elisabeth Moss) crossed paths with Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) after she was reunited with Janine (Madeline Brewer). The series finale kicked off a search for Janine that ended when she was brought back to the Gilead border.

It was at that exact time that Aunt Lydia — and Naomi (Ever Carradine) — arrived with Janine’s daughter Charlotte. As mom and daughter reconnected, Aunt Lydia asked June to take care of them as they exchanged a shared look of respect.

The final interaction between June and Aunt Lydia showed the development that was building all season. Aunt Lydia’s evolution is meant to set up her story, which will be further explored in Hulu’s upcoming series The Testaments.

Based on Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where low fertility rates have resulted in women being forcefully assigned to men for the sole purpose of bearing children. The end of the series showed a revolution resulting in freedom across multiple states — but the fight is not over.

The Testaments, meanwhile, is set 15 years later and is narrated by Aunt Lydia, as viewers are thrust back into the dystopian future with characters such as Agnes from Gilead and Daisy from Canada. Viewers will watch as a new resistance gathers and smuggles incriminating information about Gilead’s regime out of the country. Agnes and Daisy pose as “Pearl Girls” to infiltrate Canada, while Aunt Lydia acts as a covert source within Gilead.

The Handmaid’s Tale coshowrunners Yahlin Chang and Eric Tuchman weighed in on how Aunt Lydia’s arc was preparing her for the spinoff.

“Her decision in episode 8 is really a natural progression from the journey she’s been on from the very beginning of the show. But especially that is heated up with her realizing more and more how horrible these commanders are. So when June says, ‘You’ve learned things you can’t unlearn, you’ve seen things you can’t unsee.’ That’s what she is referring to,” Chang exclusively told Us Weekly in April. “Lydia really believed was a true believer. But she started to understand that these commanders are incredibly toxic — the best examples of toxic male behavior. So that decision to let them go, she’s really just broken down again.”

Chang added: “So in that moment, she can’t see what to do other than let them go. She does it out of love for Janine. She just goes over to Janine and says, ‘I’m sorry I hurt you.’”

Tuchman elaborated on how Aunt Lydia’s story is just getting started.

“We’ve chipped away at Lydia’s unbelievable denial about the truth of Gilead and her willful blindness,” he teased. “But moving forward, now we know she’s made that decision to liberate the Handmaids. She’s aligned with them in the eyes of Gilead. She has betrayed her duties to Gilead. … She’s now on a path that she can’t stray from. She’s made a very strong decision that she’ll need to account for.”

The Handmaid’s Tale is currently streaming on Hulu.

Sadie Robertson Reflects on Final Moments with Grandfather

As previously and sadly reported, Phil Robertson died this past weekend after a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

The popular form Duck Dynasty star was 79 years old.

“We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord,” wrote daughter-in-law Korie Robertson on Facebook to confirm the news.

This unfortunate development took place just days before the premiere of the family’s new reality show.

A day after the public learned of Phil’s passing, granddaughter Sadie Robertson shared the above photo of her and her late loved ones on Instagram.

“‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.’ – 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV,” Sadie wrote to being her affiliated message, adding:

“As I was sitting with Papaw Phil today, I thought about this verse… he has already experienced this on earth—going from dead to alive by the power of Christ.

“It was his testimony that changed his life, our families life, and thousands of others. Now he is experiencing it in the fullness. Fully alive in Christ. The new has come.”

Sadie then relayed her grandfather’s final words:

“One of the last things he said to me was ‘full strength ahead!’ Amen!”

In her post, Sadie shared a carousel of images with her grandfather over the years… including one of Phil speaking at her wedding to husband Christian Huff and another in which she and Christian hold their two daughters Honey James Huff, 4, and Haven Belle Huff, 2, alongside Phil and his wife Kay Robertson.

In announcing his passing, the Robertsons expressed their gratitude for the impact the reality star had during his life.

“Thank you for the love and prayers of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, his bold faith, and by his desire to tell everyone who would listen the Good News of Jesus,” continued Korie on social media.

“We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again.

“We know so many of you love him and have been impacted by his life. We’re having a private service for now, but we’ll share details soon about a public celebration of his life.”

About five months, Jase Robertson shared that the Duck Dynasty patriarch had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.

He revealed that at the time that Phil Robertson was in the “early stage” and added that things had “accelerated, and it’s causing problems with his entire body.”

Jase also told his listeners that his father was “just not doing well. He’s really struggling.”

Despite his father’s declining health, Robertson said last month that he and the family — including his other brothers Alan Robertson and Jep Robertson — were rallying around each other and just trying to remain positive.

“We’re doing the best we can,” he explained during the April 2 episode of his podcast. “I think that’s just what you do.”

Ethereum hitting real-time zk-proof milestone is ‘ZK man on the moon moment’

Succinct has demonstrated real-time zero-knowledge proving for Ethereum blocks, generating cryptographic proofs in under 12 seconds.

Succinct’s SP1 “Hypercube” zkVM produced a proof for Ethereum block 22309250 (143 transactions, 32 million gas) in 10.8 seconds, and internal benchmarks showed it could prove 93 % of 10,000 recent main-net blocks in under 12 seconds, with an average latency of 10.3 seconds.

The achievement marks a technical leap for the zero-knowledge space, with Succinct deploying an entirely new proof system based on multilinear polynomials, optimized CUDA kernels for operations such as LogUp GKR and sum-check, and a low-latency cloud architecture spanning hundreds of GPUs. Co-founder Uma Roy characterized the milestone as a result of engineering advances across cryptography, hardware acceleration, and distributed systems.

Roy commented,

“This is ZK’s man on the moon moment. Real-time Ethereum proving has landed.

If you had asked anyone in ZK 1 year ago whether this was possible, they would have said it was a literal moonshot.”

While the performance milestone narrows the latency gap between proof generation and block time, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin outlined remaining limitations.

Current results represent average-case performance, not worst-case. Buterin emphasized that for real-time proving to be suitable for Layer 1 security, worst-case block proving must also remain within block times.

Additionally, SP1 proofs have not undergone formal verification, and energy requirements hover near 100 kW per proof, far above the 10 kW that Buterin considers viable for home-based proving. He also noted that expanding Ethereum’s Layer 1 gas limit by an order of magnitude remains contingent on further proof efficiency.

Community discussions have surfaced around decentralization and proving capacity. As discussed in the Ethereum Magicians forum, researcher Dankrad Odendaal argued for temporarily relaxing hardware decentralization goals for provers.

Odendaal noted that proving overhead has dropped by several orders of magnitude and that further gains may be possible through architectural improvements or specialized hardware.

He proposed that proving is reversible, unlike other areas of protocol scaling that incur permanent burdens. Should scalability push against prover capacity, the network could revert to lower gas limits without long-term state growth penalties.

Odendaal also noted that proof generation can be parallelized across distributed infrastructure, making it less susceptible to centralization risks than full stateful nodes. Even without single-digit overhead proving, distributed proving across many machines could achieve latency targets while preserving a minority honesty assumption for system integrity.

The rollout of SP1 in a real-time context is the culmination of both cryptographic innovation and infrastructure coordination.

Succinct’s implementation spans bare-metal deployments and performance-tuned distributed workloads, but the energy and formal verification constraints illustrate that proving remains on a trajectory, not yet an endpoint.

Further reductions in latency and power, along with protocol-level integration, will shape Ethereum’s ability to anchor trust-minimized execution directly in its base layer.
