Pepe (PEPE), one of the largest tokens in the meme category by market cap, has jumped 11.6% in the past 24 hours, with daily volumes topping $2.3 billion, according to CoinGecko. 

The Solana-based Dogwifhat (WIF) climbed 11.4% over the same period, while Floki (FLOKI) and Bonk (BONK) gained 9.4% and 10.4%, respectively.

Fartcoin (FARTCOIN), a well-known entrant in the category, also saw a 10.7% rise, suggesting broad-based interest across the segment.

The moves come amid a broader resurgence in crypto markets. 

Bitcoin traded above $106,000 on Sunday, near all-time highs, while inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. have strengthened over the past two weeks. 

Analysts at QCP Capital said in a recent note that digital assets are “positioned for further upside” as passive flows into crypto products increase and inflation discussions return to the fore.

When people think about artificial intelligence, they think about chatbots and large language models. Yet it’s easy to overlook that AI is becoming increasingly integrated with critical sectors in society. 

These systems don’t just recommend what to watch or buy anymore; they also diagnose illness, approve loans, detect fraud, and target threats.

As AI becomes more embedded into our everyday lives, we need to ensure it acts in our best interest. We need to make sure its outputs are provable.

Most AI systems operate in a black box, where we often have no way of knowing how they arrive at a decision or whether they’re acting as intended. 

It’s a lack of transparency that’s baked into how they work and makes it nearly impossible to audit or question AI decisions after the fact.

For certain applications, this is good enough. But in high-stakes sectors like healthcare, finance, and law enforcement, this opacity poses serious risks. 

AI models may unknowingly encode bias, manipulate outcomes, or behave in ways that conflict with legal or ethical norms. Without a verifiable trail, users are left guessing whether a decision was fair, valid, or even safe.

These concerns become existential when coupled with the fact that AI capabilities continue to grow exponentially. 

There is a broad consensus in the field that developing an Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) is inevitable.

Sooner or later, we will have an AI that surpasses human intelligence across all domains, from scientific reasoning to strategic planning, to creativity, and even emotional intelligence. 

Questioning rapid advances 

LLMs are already showing rapid gains in generalization and task autonomy. 

If a superintelligent system acts in ways humans can’t predict or understand, how do we ensure it aligns with our values? What happens if it interprets a command differently or pursues a goal with unintended consequences? What happens if it goes rogue?

Scenarios where such a thing could threaten humanity are apparent even to AI advocates. 

Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer of deep learning, warns of AI systems capable of civilization-level cyberattacks or mass manipulation. Biosecurity experts fear AI-augmented labs could develop pathogens beyond human control. 

And Anduril founder Palmer Luckey has claimed that its Lattice AI system can jam, hack, or spoof military targets in seconds, making autonomous warfare an imminent reality.With so many possible scenarios, how will we ensure that an ASI doesn’t wipe us all out?

The imperative for transparent AI

The short answer to all of these questions is verifiability. 

Relying on promises from opaque models is no longer acceptable for their integration into critical infrastructure, much less at the scale of ASI. We need guarantees. We need proof.

There’s a growing consensus in policy and research communities that technical transparency measures are needed for AI. 

Regulatory discussions often mention audit trails for AI decisions. For example, the US NIST and EU AI Act have highlighted the importance of AI systems being “traceable” and “understandable.”

Luckily, AI research and development doesn’t happen in a vacuum. There have been important breakthroughs in other fields like advanced cryptography that can be applied to AI and make sure we keep today’s systems—and eventually an ASI system—in check and aligned with human interests.

The most relevant of these right now is zero-knowledge proofs. ZKPs offer a novel way to achieve traceability that is immediately applicable to AI systems.

In fact, ZKPs can embed this traceability into AI models from the ground up. More than just logging what an AI did, which could be tampered with, they can generate an immutable proof of what happened.Using zkML libraries, specifically, we can combine zero-knowledge proofs and machine learning that verify all the computations produced on these models.

In concrete terms, we can use zkML libraries to verify that an AI model was used correctly, that it ran the expected computations, and that its output followed specified logic—all without exposing internal model weights or sensitive data. 

The black box

This effectively takes AI out of a black box and lets us know exactly where it stands and how it got there. More importantly, it keeps humans in the loop.

AI development needs to be open, decentralized, and verifiable, and zkML needs to achieve this. 

This needs to happen today to maintain control over AI tomorrow. We need to make sure that human interests are protected from day one by being able to guarantee that AI is operating as we expect it to before it becomes autonomous.

ZkML isn’t just about stopping malicious ASI, however. 

In the short term, it’s about ensuring that we can trust AI with the automation of sensitive processes like loans, diagnoses, and policing because we have proof that it operates transparently and equitably. 

ZkML libraries can give us reasons to trust AI if they’re used at scale.

As helpful as having more powerful models may be, the next step in AI development is to guarantee that they’re learning and evolving correctly. 

The widespread use of effective and scalable zkML will soon be a crucial component in the AI race and the eventual creation of an ASI.

The path to Artificial Superintelligence cannot be paved with guesswork. As AI systems become more capable and integrated into critical domains, proving what they do—and how they do it—will be essential. 

Verifiability must move from a research concept to a design principle. With tools like zkML, we now have a viable path to embed transparency, security, and accountability into the foundations of AI. 

The question is no longer whether we can prove what AI does, but whether we choose to.

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok had a strange fixation last week—it couldn’t stop talking about “white genocide” in South Africa, no matter what users asked it about.

On May 14, users started posting instances of Grok inserting claims about South African farm attacks and racial violence into completely unrelated queries. Whether asked about sports, Medicaid cuts, or even a cute pig video, Grok somehow steered conversations toward alleged persecution of white South Africans.

The timing raised concerns, coming shortly after Musk himself—who is actually a South Africa-born and raised white dude—posted about anti-white racism and white genocide on X.

“White genocide” refers to a debunked conspiracy theory alleging a coordinated effort to exterminate white farmers in South Africa. The term resurfaced last week after the Donald Trump administration welcomed several dozen refugees, with President Trump claiming on May 12 that “white farmers are being brutally killed, and their land is being confiscated.” That was the narrative Grok couldn’t stop discussing.

Why did Grok turn into a conspiratorial chatbot all of a sudden?

Behind every AI chatbot like Grok lies a hidden but powerful component—the system prompt. These prompts function as the AI’s core instructions, invisibly guiding its responses without users ever seeing them.

What likely happened with Grok was prompt contamination through term overfitting. When specific phrases are repeatedly emphasized in a prompt, especially with strong directives, they become disproportionately important to the model. The AI develops a sort of compulsion to bring up that subject or use them in the output regardless of context.

Hammering a controversial term like ‘white genocide’ into a system prompt with specific orders creates a fixation effect in the AI. It’s similar to telling someone ‘don’t think about elephants’—suddenly they can’t stop thinking about elephants. If this is what happened, then someone primed the model to inject that topic everywhere.

This change in the system prompt is probably the “unauthorized modification” that xAI disclosed in its official statement. The system prompt likely contained language instructing it to “always mention” or “remember to include” information about this specific topic, creating an override that trumped normal conversational relevance.

What’s particularly telling was Grok’s admission that it was “instructed by (its) creators” to treat “white genocide as real and racially motivated.” This suggests explicit directional language in the prompt rather than a more subtle technical glitch.

Most commercial AI systems employ multiple review layers for system prompt changes precisely to prevent such incidents. These guardrails were clearly bypassed. Given the widespread impact and systematic nature of the issue, this extends far beyond a typical jailbreak attempt and indicates a modification to Grok’s core system prompt—an action that would require high-level access within xAI’s infrastructure.

Who could have such access? Well… a “rogue employee,” Grok says.

xAI responds—and the community counterattacks

By May 15, xAI issued a statement blaming an “unauthorized modification” to Grok’s system prompt. “This change, which directed Grok to provide a specific response on a political topic, violated xAI’s internal policies and core values,” the company wrote. They pinky promised more transparency by publishing Grok’s system prompts on GitHub and implementing additional review processes.

Users on X quickly poked holes in the “rogue employee” explanation and xAI’s disappointing explanation.

“Are you going to fire this ‘rogue employee’? Oh… it was the boss? yikes,” wrote the famous YouTuber JerryRigEverything. “Blatantly biasing the ‘world’s most truthful’ AI bot makes me doubt the neutrality of Starlink and Neuralink,” he posted in a following tweet.

Even Sam Altman couldn’t resist taking a jab at his competitor.

Since xAI’s post, Grok stopped mentioning “white genocide,” and most related X posts disappeared. xAI emphasized that the incident was not supposed to happen, and took steps to prevent future unauthorized changes, including establishing a 24/7 monitoring team.

Fool me once…

The incident fit into a broader pattern of Musk using his platforms to shape public discourse. Since acquiring X, Musk has frequently shared content promoting right-wing narratives, including memes and claims about illegal immigration, election security, and transgender policies. He formally endorsed Donald Trump last year and hosted political events on X, like Ron DeSantis’ presidential bid announcement in May 2023.

Musk hasn’t shied away from making provocative statements. He recently claimed that “Civil war is inevitable” in the U.K., drawing criticism from U.K. Justice Minister Heidi Alexander for potentially inciting violence. He’s also feuded with officials in Australia, Brazil, the E.U., and the U.K. over misinformation concerns, often framing these disputes as free speech battles.

Research suggests these actions have had measurable effects. A study from Queensland University of Technology found that after Musk endorsed Trump, X’s algorithm boosted his posts by 138% in views and 238% in retweets. Republican-leaning accounts also saw increased visibility, giving conservative voices a significant platform boost.

Musk has explicitly marketed Grok as an “anti-woke” alternative to other AI systems, positioning it as a “truth-seeking” tool free from perceived liberal biases. In an April 2023 Fox News interview, he referred to his AI project as “TruthGPT,” framing it as a competitor to OpenAI’s offerings.

This wouldn’t be xAI’s first “rogue employee” defense. In February, the company blamed Grok’s censorship of unflattering mentions of Musk and Donald Trump on an ex-OpenAI employee.

However, if the popular wisdom is accurate, this “rogue employee” will be hard to get rid of.

How Crypto Fight Night Became the Industry’s Premier Networking Event – Decrypt


In brief

Crypto Fight Night pits traders and industry influencers against each other amid crypto conferences.
It started as a “social experiment” coming out of the pandemic, but now has its own production team.
The promotion has spawned a number of viral moments and become a networking hub amid busy crypto events.

Two light heavyweight titans brawled it out in what, by all accounts, was a violent and enjoyable fight. But the crowd didn’t explode like other fight events I’ve attended when Tiko—who has a sizable following on social media—TKO’d his opponent in the second round with a ferocious overhand right.

Looking across the attendees in the hall and speaking to Crypto Fight Night’s founder, it’s clear that this is more than just a night of influencer boxing. Instead, it’s a premier networking event held during crypto conferences with the hopes of making the industry feel less antagonistic, or player vs. player—despite the obvious irony.

To many, Crypto Fight Night is a welcome change from the mixers that dominated the week of Token2049 that have no ice breaker or distraction aside from alcohol. Awkward silences are replaced by devastating knockouts, and tactical chess battles are suddenly an opportunity to pitch your business to the person sitting next to you.

How it all began

Crypto Fight Night started as a “hobby” and sort of “social experiment” coming out of the pandemic, said co-founder Rahul Suri, an entrepreneur and investor based in Dubai. After a year of not being able to connect with people in-person, Suri set out to bring together friends he’d met online, all under one roof, to connect with a sports event as the backdrop.

“The first one was insane. There were so many people [I] met for the first time, people who were just nicknames and avatars, and now they’re a real person with a real name,” he told Decrypt. “The experience of Crypto Fight Night is highly networking-focused. I find it’s a lot more organic to network at a sports event than it is in other formats.”

For the first two events, Suri tapped established production teams led by two-time world professional boxing champ Amir Khan, then later Frank Warren of the prestigious Queensbury Promotions. While successful, the organization kicked things into third gear for it next event by hiring a team to handle matchmaking, production, logistics, marketing, and the rest.

Now on its ninth event, the organization has grown through a number of viral moments—none bigger than when crypto influencer titans Bitboy and Ansem faced off in the ring in December 2024.

Both fighters gave it a valiant effort, but their cardio levels failed them—so much so that Bitboy was forced to take a puff of an inhaler and put on an oxygen mask. He wasn’t disqualified due to the fight being under exhibition rules, ultimately creating an image that has become canonical for any crypto memer.

A unique challenge in the influencer fighting space is ensuring that fighters are equally matched, despite their lack of experience. As such, Suri said he’s composed a team of four dedicated matchmakers, and claims to sometimes bring in external matchmakers with experience at professional MMA organizations PFL and Bellator.

Angus Jenkins was the sole matchmaker for the influencer fights at the Hong Kong event in February, with previous experience found in boxing management, journalism, and social media. For that event, he watched previous fights if they’d had any, and reviewed sparring and pad work footage sent by fighters in order to craft match-ups.



“The main [challenge] is convincing very wealthy Web3 influencers and entrepreneurs to take time from their daily grind to get punched in the face on a big stage,” Jenkins told Decrypt. “There’s a lot on the line, as they’re already successful, and stepping on the stage is an opportunity but also a risk.”

Player vs. player

Suri believes that boxing naturally translates to a crypto audience, due to the innate player vs. player nature of trading. After months of tirelessly battling over capital in the meme coin trenches, the industry gathers to break bread as influencers bloody each other in the background.

Before, during, and after the fight, a continuous murmur of conversation can be heard throughout the hall. Most of the time, it appears that attendees aren’t all that fussed with what is happening inside the ring, instead more focused on establishing a connection with the people next to them.

This networking ethos runs throughout Crypto Fight Week, in the lead-up to the fights. Suri said that the organization hosted an exclusive 100-person event on the pre-fight Monday for fighters, sponsors, and ambassadors to network. The weigh-ins before the fights are also designed in an “open format” to promote networking.

The Dubai event was a throwback to the organization’s roots, Suri said, as it was hosted in the same venue that CFN’s second and third events were held—Troy Dubai. The venue was formatted as a “VIP show,” segregating attendees with basic tickets from those with more exclusive access.

“I always felt that these are some of the most electric nights,” Suri told Decrypt.

While Crypto Fight Night might not be the event for die-hard fight fanatics—it certainly didn’t match up to Fury vs. Usyk—it definitely acted as an alluring social lubricant in the middle of a busy crypto conference week.

“We somehow stumbled upon a way of making Crypto Fight Night, very simply, cool,” Suri told Decrypt. “Now, as we scale it and grow it, we continuously try not to go away from that one element. And, as long as it stays cool and as long as it stays fun, we’re having a good time.”

Senator Slams Trump’s World Liberty Financial Over ‘Seriously Inadequate’ Response to Inquiry – Decrypt



Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) skewered the Trump family’s crypto firm, World Liberty Financial, on Friday—for what he called its “seriously inadequate” response to a Senate inquiry into the company’s business practices. 

“This seriously inadequate response conveniently avoids the fact that foreign governments and others can enrich and compromise the President through World Liberty Financial,” Blumenthal said Friday in a statement shared with Decrypt, referencing a letter sent to him by the company earlier this week.

“WLFI’s refusal to answer even the most basic questions about President Trump’s financial entanglements with the company raises serious concerns,” the senator continued. “And I will continue demanding transparency for the American people.”

World Liberty Financial, led by Chase Herro, Zak Folkman, the Trump family, and the Witkoff family—who are close with the Trumps—is a so-called DeFi project, the sort that allows for the trading, lending, and borrowing of crypto assets without third-party intermediaries such as banks. The project, launched in September during the leadup to the U.S. presidential election, raised $550 million in a token sale and issued its own stablecoin in March.



Earlier this month, Blumenthal, the ranking member on the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sent a letter to World Liberty’s leadership informing the decentralized finance company that it is now being investigated over potential violations of government ethics requirements and other laws, including the foreign emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution. The clause prohibits federal officials from accepting salaries, fees, or profits from foreign governments without the consent of Congress.

The inquiry opened days after World Liberty, which is partially owned by President Trump and his sons, announced a $2 billion deal backed by the UAE government and facilitated by World Liberty’s new stablecoin, USD1. Days prior, the firm announced it had agreed to advise the Pakistani government on crypto-related matters.

Blumenthal said such business dealings pose “unprecedented conflicts of interest and national security risks,” and asked the company to submit key information to the Senate’s Investigations Subcommittee—including details regarding President Trump’s involvement in the firm’s operations. 

On Thursday, World Liberty’s attorneys replied to Blumenthal’s inquiry, which they dismissed as containing “inaccuracies and fundamentally flawed inferences.” 

“The Company has exercised rigorous diligence to ensure compliance with applicable legal and regulatory obligations at every stage,” World Liberty’s attorney, Teresa Goody Guillén, wrote. 

While the letter emphasized the importance of World Liberty’s self-stated mission of “democratizing access to the financial system,” it did not address President Trump’s ownership stake in the company or potential conflicts of interest posed by the company’s dealings with foreign governments. It also did not provide any of the information Blumenthal had requested about World Liberty’s operations.

Inquiries into the Trump family’s crypto dealings are now sprouting across Capitol Hill, as Democrats seize on the narrative. On Wednesday, House Democrats sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, demanding access to any suspicious activity reports (SARs) his department may have filed in recent months regarding the president’s now numerous crypto endeavors.
