Why is the study of historical costume important? For designers it’s a source of inspiration, in fact some often name their collections based on a particular period in history.  You only have to look at designers such as Yves Saint Laurent whose Beat collection for Christian Dior in 1960 was inspired by the existentialists of Paris’s bohemian Left Bank. Ralph Lauren has based many of his collections on historical references. In 2018 he said “I loved East Coast preppiness, the utility of the cowboy’s worn jeans, American folk art, the glamour of Hollywood, and the rich heritage of Native American craftsmanship.” And of course Alexander McQueen, the master of fashion history, with his collections: Highland Rape in 1995 that focused on English violence towards Scotland; his Joan collection in 1998 inspired by French folk heroine Joan of Arc and many others. Here’s a full list of his past collections.

For designers, the study of fashion history is mandatory. It is not only a source of inspiration, but it chronicles the social status, gender roles, and cultural practices of a particular time and place.

Let’s take a look at some of the most ridiculous fashion, some hits and some misses, and how fashion continues to challenge the status quo.

FASHION’S WIDE LOAD

Pannier dresses, popular in the 18th century, were so wide that women often found themselves stuck in doorways. These voluminous skirts required careful navigation and considerable space abut showcased the wearer’s status and the extravagance of the period. One of the most asked questions is how did women use the toilet when a  wearing a pannier, hoop, bustle and/or caged skirt? The answer: They wore split-crotch drawers and therefore never had to pull them down as they used a commode and chamber pot. They would simply lift up the skirt, hoop or crinoline, and sit down either at the front or the back of the chair/commode, or they would place one foot on the chair while holding the chamber pot. FRENCH NOBLEWOMEN’S EXTRAVAGANCE

French noblewomen in the 18th century took hairstyling to new heights—literally. Inspired by naval victories, their elaborate coiffures often included miniature ships, complete with sails and rigging, perched atop their heads. Some of the most extravagant millinery designs would follow, such as the high-heeled Schiaparelli shoe hat, created in 1937 in collaboration with Salvador Dalí and Philip Treacy’s outstanding and outlandish creations. FASHION DOLLS

In the 15th century, fashion designers showcased their creations on little dolls instead of live models. These miniature clothes mannequins were sent to clients, offering a glimpse of the latest trends from which they would order. Designers back then were definitely more sustainability-minded compared to today’s practice of creating, fabricating and constructing hundreds of samples, several times a year, all full scale.

In Victorian times, it was customary for young boys to wear dresses until they were about four or five years old. This practice made diaper changes easier and was a social norm of the era. However, the trend went out of fashion by the 1920s. Although Egyptian, Greek and Roman men wore togas and Scottish men still wear kilts, the concept of men wearing skirts and dresses didn’t pick up steam until 1990 when Jean Paul Gaultier designed the man-skirt. In 2023, Harry Styles became the first man to wear a dress on the cover Vogue magazine.

THE RISE OF WOMEN’S SHORTS

It wasn’t until after World War II that it became socially acceptable for women to wear shorts in public. The war brought about significant changes in women’s fashion, as practicality and comfort took precedence over pre-war norms. Today, women’s shorts have gotten even shorter and include names such as hot pants, short shorts, booty shorts, high cut shorts and even buttocks-exposing shorts, in an attempt to challenge societal norms.

Shoulder bags for women first appeared during World War II as part of service uniforms. Practical and functional, these bags soon became a staple in women’s fashion, blending utility with style. Fun fact: Did you know that the original Hermès Bag Birkin had a shoulder strap but was later removed for all future Birkin Hermès bags? But in 2023, with a surge of younger consumers who favor hands-free handbags taking over the luxury market, Hermès released the Crossbody Birkin.

Chronographs are watches that have stopwatch functions, and they’ve been around for centuries. The best chronograph watches in the world come in all shapes and sizes, from heritage to sports models.

We’ll go over what you need to know about the different kinds of chronographs on the market before we get into our list of top 14 chronograph watches below!

Types of Chronograph Watches

There are two main types of chronograph watches: the mechanical and quartz variants. A mechanical chronograph has an actual hand which you can use to measure time with, while quartz models use an electronic oscillator powered by a quartz crystal.

Although they seem pretty similar on paper, their overall performance is actually quite different! Mechanical chronographs are powered by a spring, which you’ll need to wind regularly.

They can also be affected by various factors like magnetism and gravity (especially the ones with tourbillion movements). On the other hand, quartz chronographs are battery-powered devices that generally offer pretty stable performance in multiple conditions – they’re not as susceptible to external forces!

Unlike an automatic watch where the mechanism is internal, a chronograph watch has a stopwatch function and other dials clearly on display. On most chronographs, there is a second hand which moves when you start the stopwatch.

History of Chronograph Watches

French watchmaker Louis Moinet is credited with inventing the first chronograph in 1816.

Not long after, the Rattrapante chronograph was created. Meaning to catch up in French, this kind of watch was invented in 1844 by Adolphe Nicole.

A rattrapante chronograph has two seconds hands – it lets you record an event by pressing the button that starts and stops one of the hands, then allows you to record another separate time with the other hand. A lot of rattrapante chronographs are designed for sports watch enthusiasts because they’re often equipped with tachymeter scales on their outer bezels.

Another kind of chronograph on the market is the Column Wheel chronograph, invented by Louis Moinet in 1816. A column-wheel controls the way that two separate chronograph seconds hands work together, and they were originally designed to be used as stopwatches instead of luxury watches.

The best part about this kind of watch is their simplicity – they have fewer parts than other kinds of chronographs which allows them to be more accurate. Column-wheel watches are also very easy for the user to operate because there’s only one button necessary, so you can start and stop both hands at once with just the press of a single button!

A third kind of watch that falls into the chronograph category is called a Perpetual Calendar. It’s capable of displaying both calendar dates and moon phases.

Perpetual Calendar watches are often equipped with two rattrapante hands for recording multiple events. The best part about this kind of chronograph is that it’s extremely useful – you can use the stopwatch function to time your laps during a race.

The first ever automatic chronograph was launched in 1969 as a joint venture between watchmakers Breitling, Hamilton and Heuer and movement specialist Dubois Dépraz.

Fashion thrives on change, and behind these status-quo-challenging shakeups often lie designers. Gabrielle Chanel’s singular vision to liberate women from restrictive clothing spurred the immense success of her label, Chanel, and then there’s Daniel Lee, whose tenure at Bottega Veneta saw fringed skirts and the inception of celebrity-favourite It-bags like the Jodie, which ushered in a new era of youthfulness at the historic Italian label.

This undercurrent of change is more relevant than ever in 2024, considering the reshuffling of personnel at fashion’s top jobs. With this typically comes a drastic switch in the aesthetic sensibilities of the brand—think Sabato De Sarno’s understated take at Gucci compared to Alessandro Michele’s tendency toward romantic excess, an approach he’s already bringing to Valentino.

As of August this year, we’ve seen creative directors like Peter Hawkings and Dries Van Noten unexpectedly bowing out at their respective houses without announcing a successor. Van Noten, in particular, embraces the possibility of his replacement veering away from the codes he’s established over 38 years at his eponymous brand. “No, I absolutely don’t want them to do it the way that I do,” the member of the Antwerp Six told Business of Fashion’s Tim Blanks in an interview, explaining that he’d prefer them to approach his brand with a “new eye”.

Chanel and Givenchy have faced the same situation since Virginie Viard and Matthew M. Williams left their posts at the respective fashion houses. In the case of such industry power players, speculation amongst fashion insiders about Viard and Williams’s potential successors are understandably rife.

For one, there were reports by the likes of Fashionnetwork on John Galliano’s rumoured decision to leave Maison Margiela for Fendi or Chanel—or even to make a return at Dior—although Maison Margiela has not confirmed this. Amongst the three labels, though, Fendi has been highlighted as the most likely destination for Galliano if he were to be tapped for another brand, considering his past controversies.

Notably, Maison Margiela is missing from the roster of upcoming presentations for Spring/Summer 2025, though an event will be staged by the house in late September.

In other news, Celine’s Hedi Slimane—known for his distinctive svelte silhouettes and references to the rock’n’roll genre—is speculated to be in the running for Chanel’s top position once again by major publications like W and Highsnobiety. He had previously faced similar rumours when he left Saint Laurent in 2016.

But Galliano and Slimane are not the only creative directors being watched closely—so is Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson, who has been said by multiple sources on the internet to leave Loewe for Gucci. This, like many others on this list, has not been officially confirmed.

Michael Rider Is The New Creative Director Of Celine

Hedi Slimane’s successor has been named: Michael Rider is the new artistic director of Celine. From early 2025, he will helm the French fashion brand’s womenswear, menswear, leather good, accessories, and couture.

Rider was most recently the creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren. But Philophiles may know him as the design director of Celine during Phoebe Philo’s tenure. He served that role for 10 years. Before that, he worked alongside Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga.

“Celine is a maison with values very close to my heart and a beautiful heritage to build on,” said Rider in a statement. “I am honoured to come back and shape the future of the maison together with the Celine team.”

Hedi Slimane Exits Celine

Hedi Slimane is saying goodbye to Celine. The news was announced in a statement by LVMH, which owns the French fashion brand. Slimane became the artistic, creative and image director of Celine in February 2018.

“Under his creative and artistic direction, Celine has experienced exceptional growth and established itself as an iconic French couture house,” said LVMH in its statement while Celine noted in a statement “Under his creative and artistic direction, Celine has experienced exceptional growth and established itself as an iconic French couture house”.

“The holistic vision of Hedi Slimane, his exigence and rigor have made it possible to redefine the codes of Celine whilst reaffirming its feminine and Parisian roots. He has also remarkably enriched new territories for the maison such as the men’s silhouette, couture and haute parfumerie. The extraordinary journey taken together over the last seven years has made Celine a house with a formidable foundation for the future.”

There are no news yet on where Slimane is headed next. The fashion designer previously made his mark at the helms of Saint Laurent and Dior Homme. At Paris Fashion Week, Slimane unveiled Celine’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, which included tweed ensembles. The collection has led some fashion insiders to speculate that Slimane may be headed to Chanel, which is yet to announce its creative director.

One of the biggest announcements coming out of New York Fashion Week? Sarah Burton is the new creative director of Givenchy.⁠ Burton succeeds Matthew M. Williams, who exited the French luxury fashion house in January 2024.⁠Burton is the former creative director of Alexander McQueen, and the longtime right-hand woman of the brand’s late founder, Lee McQueen. Paul Andrew Joins Sergio Rossi

When Lewis Hamilton was announced as Dior’s brand ambassador in July this year, it probably came as a shock to no one. The multiple Formula 1 record holder—the man has the most career wins and world championship titles to date—isn’t just a blur on the racetrack, he’s quite the snazzy dresser off of it. Specifically, Hamilton had been spotted wearing Dior Men on multiple occasions while making the F1 Grand Prix circuit this season.

Brand ambassadorships are a well-established concept that works. But at the rate persons of note are being conferred the title, it’s nigh impossible to keep track of who’s affiliated to which brand. What is rare, however, is a brand ambassador who is more than just a physical embodiment of what a brand represents.

Hamilton seems to have a knack for taking his involvement with fashion brands a step further than the norm. With Tommy Hilfiger, Hamilton co-created four TommyXLewis capsule collections from 2018 to 2020, imbuing his own personal sense of style to that of the American brand. And now at Dior Men, he’s charging ahead with a capsule collection designed together with artistic director Kim Jones.

“Working with Kim and the talented team at Dior has been a dream, and I was honoured when Kim asked if I’d like to do this with him. Our values and ideas are aligned, making it easy to bring to life a creative collection infused with our shared experiences,” Hamilton expresses.

The new Dior Men Lifestyle Capsule collection is not F1 , or even racing-related, because that would be far too predictable and Hamilton is a multi-faceted individual. Instead, the collection revolves around skiing and snowboarding as a personal celebration of Hamilton’s love for an outdoor-centric winter lifestyle. He’s an adrenaline junkie and has a love for extreme sports aside from motorsports.

“We share a love of nature, a desire to celebrate Africa and an interest in the artisanal processes and techniques that unite craftspeople in Africa with the savoir-faire of the Dior ateliers. Added to that, this collection also reflects Lewis’ sporting side, his virtuosity and our functionality,” says Jones.

In many ways, the Lifestyle Capsule collection is a global effort. African-inspired motifs are incorporated within the collection (Jones grew up in African countries in his early years), adding vibrancy to technical functionalities. African weaves made in Burkina Faso, for example, have been crafted into casual suiting by the Dior ateliers, and custom snowboards by Switzerland-based Factory 9 feature Dior branding set against graphic African-inspired motifs. The collection’s technical skiwear by Japanese sportswear brand Descente too are made to withstand the harsh cold conditions on the slopes. The expertise rendered by these different “global ateliers” all ensure that not only do the pieces look exceptional and on par with Dior’s craftsmanship, but that they also function on the same level.

Hamilton has taken it a step further by pushing the boundaries of the Dior ateliers in ensuring that sustainability isn’t an afterthought to the creation of the collection. Having been on a plant-based diet since 2017, Hamilton insisted that no animal leather is to be used for any of the pieces in the Lifestyle Capsule collection. He’s pushed for more conscious choices in terms of materiality. The collection’s ready-to-wear such as slouchy denims, knitwear, and fleeces are made partly using organic or recycled textiles. A micro-fibre snow shoe, the Dior Snow derby, has been designed to serve as a casual pair of footwear while simultaneously being capable of performing on the slopes over a snowboard—a cleverly designed versatile pair.

These new touches serve to enhance the collection while retaining the essence of a Kim Jones Dior Men collection. The B44 Blade sneaker is a new addition to Jones’ expanding sneaker offerings for Dior Men. Conceptualised with a decidedly 2000s silhouette in mind, it’s undoubtedly sporty in its allure and rendered in tasteful gradations of colours. It’s too early to say if the design will become a mainstay for Dior Men but it definitely fits in with the existing Dior Men universe.

In an interview with WWD, Jones hints that there will be more to come. “This is almost like a taste, and then we get into bigger collections,” he said of the partnership with Hamilton. And to that, we’ll just have to wait and see what comes next, because this collection, in essence, is quite a game-changer for a house like Dior.

As the first Andaz hotel (and also the first World of Hyatt property) in the Czech Republic, the laid-back luxury of Andaz Prague has quickly become a favorite of travelers. Located in the historic Sugar Palace, its historic interiors tell a lot of stories. It was once the main office of the sugar trade in town (did you know the sugar cube was invented here?). It then served as a government office for nutrition during the Communist years, and later a bank.

These days, the interiors are filled with colorful art and mythical legend allusions that give the entire building a museum-like air. Every few steps leads to questions or conversations, usually solved via a quick QR scan thanks to the hotel’s excellent focus on art and design. No matter your reason for visiting the city, these are the top five reasons to stay at the Andaz Prague.

The art and design

The entire essence of this hotel is built around the mystery and myth of so many Czech legends. White it may not seem obvious it first, pick up a book from reception (it’s a beautiful paperback of almost 50 pages that you can take home) with details on all of the historic stories that created the art here.

As soon as you enter, the exuberant light wakes you up to something fresh and new, and I loved that, even after arriving late in the evening. I immediately drew attention to the colorful art and historic pieces that lined the walls. The book details how everything throughout the hotel is based on legends and historic tales from the region’s past.

Moving through the building, you can quickly notice the ornate moldings, tall windows and door frames, which were reconstructed or upgraded to their original style.

The cuisine

The main restaurant handles three meals a day with glorious views of the neighboring architecture and constant passersby on the sidewalk. I started the day with a lovely breakfast featuring Czech and international cheeses, pastries, breads and veggies. I really loved the a la carte breakfast with Turkish eggs, which was more of a Middle Eastern offering with poached eggs, labneh with sumac and fresh veggies.

The other menu dishes varied between international and a few regional options, which the culinary team calls Czech “bistronomy.” I really loved the creativity in the presentation and delivery. During the week, local business people pop in for an executive lunch. At nearby MEZ bar, guests and locals visit from morning to night enjoying coffee or afternoon tea, evening cocktails and light bites. During the warmer months, the cafe spills out onto the terrace.

The rooms

I love how the mythical Czech theme continues from the elevator through the hallways to the guest rooms. Hardwood floors with area rugs are home to wide king or paired queen beds with very soft pillows. Bedside power outlets are a plus.

What I really liked are the fun and quirky touches that continued the legend theme of the design, like the clutched hands that hold back the drapes and the characters that dangle from atop the mirrors or underneath the lamps.

The lion’s head that prowls over your pillow refers to the two‐tailed lion that fought the nine‐headed dragon. It now protects guests as you sleep, and there’s an extra night watch if you know where to look. On either side of the night stand, the foot stools of the table have one lion’s paw on either side. You won’t notice it unless you look.

Other fun features include some of the plumpy men climbing down the mirrors over the vanity (another story from the book at reception) and the brass bar exteriors to each guest room, part of the original bank tellar windows from years ago.

The suites are elaborate with spacious living rooms, marble-walled bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and large windows, and modern furnishings. The winter garden suites have glamorous French doors that open to hexagon-shaped seating areas that double as dining or work spaces. With the history of the building, many of the rooms sport different design layouts.

The bonuses

Andaz may be a luxury brand, but it does not skimp on special perks for all members, and not just elite status members in the top tier. Everyone is invited to the Andaz hour, a brand standard evening experience where guests can immerse themselves in a fun and local moment. Here, the hotel puts its regional immersion on full display.

The hotel hired a local parfumier to design several bespoke fragrances for the hotel. These are diffused in public areas, but during the Andaz hour, guests can interact with the bartender to curate their preferred drink using one of these scents. At the end of the experience, guests leave learning a new cocktail recipe and can taste their own drink.

Another perk for guests is the complimentary minibar in all rooms, which includes local juices and lemonades plus still and sparkling water. My favorite inclusion is the chocolate pretzel mix, a local brand that also includes other flavors in the portfolio.

Be sure to share with the hotel that you are traveling with kids. The staff has a lot of special extras that they can offer from special snacks or even exciting in-room surprises.

The points

World of Hyatt is the little loyalty program that could (and does). Despite its size, it punches above its weight when it comes to benefits and perks. This allows it to compete with bigger competitors like Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors.

During your stay, you can earn points for your room rate. You also earn points for room charges including food, drinks and spa services. Of course, the well-equipped fitness center is free for all guests to use.
