Summary
Last month, Sony sprung a surprise as the company rolled out new classic themes for the PS5 to honor PlayStation’s 30th anniversary. Unfortunately, that was always planned as a limited-time thing, and that time ends tomorrow, January 31.
Thankfully, Sony has heard the outcry of PlayStation gamers digging these classic themes and have said they plan to reinstate them.

PS5 Classic PlayStation Themes Will Return
In an announcement on Twitter/X, Sony mentioned, “Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow.”
Continuing with the announcement, Sony acknowledged the positive reception of these themes and promised they’d be back. “Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead,” the announcement ends.
There is no word how long we’ll need to wait to have these themes back on our consoles, but I’m hoping it’s not a long wait since I don’t want to turn on my PS5 without hearing that familiar PS1 boot up sound.

For those hoping for more themes from Sony, sadly, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards. In the same announcement thread, Sony states, “While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we’re excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”
This is a far cry from the PS4, where we got a ton of themes (official and unofficial), which allowed us to customize our console’s dashboard to how we wanted.
We can probably expect a new PS5 system update for when these are re-integrated within the year.
In other Sony PlayStation news, Bend Studio has reportedly started laying off contractors following the cancelation of the studio’s live service game. The electronics giant also appointed a new corporate CEO and assigned Hideaki Nishino as the sole CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
